Well, I think that if new ager J.Z. Knight were transplanted back in time to a
Renaissance
village, and I'm going to steer this conversation in that direction, that people
of that time
wouldn't like it. AT ALL. I'm always surprised at how many new age gee-gaws and
crystal
jewelry are being sold at Ren. Faires. Unless I'm mistaken, stuff like that
would be
considered accouterments of witchcraft, which people were extremely frightened
of.

There was a movement called alchemy, which my character is a devotee of, that
was
fashionable. Every Elizabethan court had an alchemist. But looking at the
history of this
movement, it is clear that they were walking a very dangerous line of blasphemy.

I'm sure others are more knowledgeable about this, but there was a gentleman
named Dr.
John Dee, who was a mystic, and claimed to be able to contact angels and
spirits. There is
even an alphabet called Enochian that I believe he developed. I believe he was
under the
employ of Elizabeth Ist. Which is astonishing, because his viewpoints are
clearly
blasphemy in that world view.

Recently watched What the Bleep, and while I thought big chunks of it

all, she must have been in the suckee chunks.

Yep. JZ Knight is a real weirdo.

Speaking of movies? What do ya'll think are the top ESSENTIAL movies for Renn.
Faire
enthusiasts to watch?

Braveheart?
I love this movie. I do think Mel Gibson is a such a ding-a-ling though.

Monty Python and THG.

LadyHawke

Highlander

I'm sure there are many MANY others...

Although I don't know how historically accurate it was, I dug Elizabeth,
starring the lovely
Cate Blanchett. I read they are making a sequel for next year, called The Golden
Age.

Wickerman! Yes!

I know they are making a re-make of that, which is strange, you should only
re-make bad
movies, and try and make them better. Anyway, I would totally move to the island
that film
takes place on. Basically, for those who have never seen it, it is an entire
isolated island of
Renn. Faire enthusiasts. Imagine Morris Dancing and partying every day. Britt
Ekland
literally cavorting around near standing stones. That island ROCKS! I totally
rooted for the
villains in that move, rather than the uptight Tory police inspector who came in
to bust
there fun up. If it weren't for their habit of human sacrifice, that place would
be the
greatest town ever!

Villains?!? Lord Summerisle is not a villain. Unless you mean by
doing what he and his people thought was absolutely necessary for
their continued existance is villany. Officer Howie denigrates the
islands people, customs & religion. He fails to find Rowan Morrison;
and he pays the ultimate price.

The remake stars Nicholas Cage as Officer Howie; I haven't seen who's
palying Summerisle, or Willow, the landlord's daughter (but she
better be good to take Britt Eklland's place)

Hey, someone needs to perform The Landlord's Daughter at faire; a few
of us will get it, those who don't nee to learn.

Well...personally, I find the lifestyle of Lord Summerisle and crew pretty
attractive.
Everybody seems real happy and there is always laughter in the air. They are
having a
BLAST living there. That policeman did come in and was quite rude and did
denigrate their
culture, and if he would have lived, would have a lifetime of regret in not
indulging in their
fun. I mean, if you hve Britt Ekland outside your bedroom door...what kind of
moron....anyway... However, I can't engage in the moral relativism of their
actions. Human
sacrifice is not nice. I know! I know! A controversial position to take, but
there, I said it.

The new movie looks pretty cool. Although the town is obviously American, more
Arkham/
Innsmouth than the previous movie. It kind of has that Harvest Home/Children of
the
Corn/ Silent Hill look to it. It has Molly Parker from Deadwood in it as well,
and we must
always support her. Always.

Agreed on El Cid and Braveheart. They weren't perfect films, but at least they
had some grit and soul. (Braveheart captured one thing well--medieval battles
with swords, light armor, and shields would have almost certainly been strewn
with blood and gore.)

I would add to my list Captain Blood and The Adventures of Robin Hood,
both with Errol Flynn. Very nice golden age films. Disney's Treasure Island
from the 50s wasn't too bad, if you're from the "aaargh!!" school of pyrating.

The only King Arthur movie that seems to have marginally gotten the period
look in the costuming was Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I don't remember
any film that ever had convincing chain mail. Maybe someone on this list
can point out a good Hollywood joust-and-armor epic. I can't remember any.
I wanted to like 'Kingdom of Heaven', but I thought it was mind-numbingly dull.

And as far as P.O.T.C. 1 and 2...I liked them, but I consider them pure fantasy
fare, like The Princess Bride.  The ultimate pirate movie is still waiting to be
made, in my opinion.

Oh well, that was my Roger Ebert moment. ;-)

There was a film in the late fifties or very early sixties with Yul Brynner staring as Jean Lafitte. It was called "The Buccaneer" by Cecil B. DeMille. It was a kick ass pirate movie.

I thought Excalibur had some interesting aspects, but I'm waiting
to see a King Arthur film that treats the legendary subject matter
in a believably historical fashion. I know that Arthur did not exist,
or--if he did exist--he was vastly different from the camelot figure of
legend. It would be nice to see him rendered into a setting of
feudal England around 900-1000 AD. The armor and sets in most
King Arthur films appear to derive from the late medieval era (if
they indeed have any earthbound historical ambiences), and
Excalibur was no exception. It's hard for me to picture Arthur
in any age other than an era where 'full armor' was chainmaille
and a pot helm. But that's just how I see him, personally.

Okay, I think I saw a trailer a while back but only once, where a
man was looking out of a straw Greenman type effegee and about to be
set on fire. I was wondering what happened to that movie? It looked
really scary. Is that the new one that Nick Cage is going to be in?

You know, I prefer the Arthurian paintings of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood,
which are a
Romantic fiction, to the grim reality of the filth and dirt of what Arthur
probably would
have looked like if he weren't a fiction. Not technically a Pre-Raphaelite, the
Arthurian
works of John William Waterhouse are another look that I think captures the
romanticism
of Tennyson. I think the Lady of Shalot is his most famous painting.

Yes, there were some wonderful illustrators who came out of the late Nineteenth
Century. I mostly know of Waterhouse from Echo and Narcissus. But he
also did some very ethereal-looking Arthurian women, didn't he?

Oh yeah! I forgot that one. I loved the way they showed Arthur interacting with
Merlin in that film.

1964. I looked it up. Haven't seen it before, but it
sounds awfully creepy.
Kind of like The Omega Man with Charlton Heston.

Ok, this looks just dreadful.  I happen to be a big fan of the original Wicker Man, and this looks like a true perversion of that movie.
