You might want to try a can of Duplicolor Sandable Primer from an auto parts
store. Duplicolor run about $4.86 for a large can locally and comes in white,
gray, black, and rust. Goes on smooth and fine.
I would test it on a test mini if you are doing plastic minis: I've tried it on
minis with a plastic base, but not a GW plastic mini.
If you use a white primer, but want dark in the recesses, you might try giving
your mini a brown magic wash after priming. The formula that I use is 1 part
Reaper MSP Brown Liner, 3 parts matte medium (Liquitex), and 3 parts water.
