Indoctrination ;) Games Workshop has this habit of making its customers
believe there is nothing else out there but GW's own products, and as a
result, many people don't look any further.
Of course, there are also many people who prefer GW's products because
they work better for them than those by other manufacturers.
I myself will try just about any model paint brand I come across, and
use GW, Rackham, Tamiya, Vallejo, Humbrol, Revell and others based on my
needs at the time. This because some paints are better for some things:
Tamiya is hard to drybrush with, for example, so I'm more likely to use
GW paint for that.

Neither. I'm very near-sighted (to the point where I could read the text
on old Dutch banknotes that said "This text cannot be read with the
naked eye" with the naked eye :) and so can paint up close without
needing any magnification ...
