I recently dropped into the local Busy Bee Tools, a Canadian supplier
of offshore tools / machines. They sell the ubiquitous 7x10 (white -
'Moby Dick') minilathe and I wanted to see one in person before
laying out the cash. I was very disappointented with what I saw. All
of the handwheel controls suffered pretty severe backlash (some over
1/2 a turn). I am wondering if this is fairly normal on these
machines and is one of the many "fixes" required or is this fairly
uncommon on the 7x machines?

Is there any way to get rid of the backlash on the carriage of my
Micro Mark 7x12? My Micro Mark mill also has a ton of backlash on
the wheel that feeds is down (I'm temporarily brain dead and can't
think of the name of that wheel). I would greatly appreciate any
help that can be offered.

Thanks,
Robert

Speaking of Mill Backlash, my Homier has a "ton" of backlash in the vertical
"fine" feed. I suspect the resolution to the problem will be the same for
the Homier as it is for the MicroMark.

Look carefully at the backlash and work out where it is occurring.
You may find that most of it is the leadscrew moving in/out and not
slack in the nut. If so, it can usually be eliminated by adjusting the
leadscrew bearing endplay - often this is controlled by the handwheel
itself (which probably screws onto the leadscrew and is held by a
locknut). In other words if you see the handwheel moving in/out as you
wind it through the backlash, that is not a problem.

Adjust until just short of the handwheel binding, and if you still have
more than 6-8 thou backlash, THEN I'd call it a problem.

(If the 7x10s are different from this, which applies to lathes I have
from 1910 to 2000(Unimat 3) then I apologise.)

This sounds bad, but bend the shaft of the gear that drive the rack up
a bit, It is very soft steel. I had a lot of backlash until I noticed
that this shaft was bent. I bent ut back up tight then ran some bras
shim between the teeth of the rack and the pinion. (It bent the rod
back and set it to a good position.

This is hard to explain, but when you take it apart and see it,
you'll understand it...

Look at the top of the carriage. There are 3 allen wrench setscrews
going into a nut below the carriage. The screw feeds into a nut
underneath/inside the carriage.

Adjust those three allen head screws so as to "twist" the nut against
the screw to eliminate backlash. Obviously the "tighter" you make
the screw the more wear there will be so there is some tradeoff,
don't crank it all the way down without a good reason.

I adjusted my harbor freight big red lathe from "about half a turn",
as you say, to only a couple thousandths.

I'm sure those adjustment screws vibrate loose during shipping, so
the further you are from China the more backlash will be exhibited.

After all the backlash mods/adjustments are done, there will still
be some backlash on any real world feedscrews. The classic way to
deal with it is to back off farther than needed, then advance to the
desired position. As long as the backlash is taken out before the
final positon is reached, it's irrelevant.

Thanks for the information regarding the handwheel backlash.
Unfortunately it sounds like this is a fairly typical problem in the
7X machines.

It is a common problem with all lathes unless you get a Hardinge HLV and you
would probably think they have to much.

You could always fit a recirculating ball lead screw. Probably cost more than
the lathe, but would eliminate perceptible back lash.

I've got some play in the leadscrew and I was wondering if anyone
knows of a way to take that out. With the lathe turned off, if I
lock the half-nut and turn the handle on the apron I can see the
whole leadscrew move a little bit back and forth. Does anyone out
there have any suggestions as to how to fix this?

I saw something, somewhere on aligning the headstock with the
tailshock, but I have no idea where I found it. When I put a dead
center in the headstock, and a dead center in the tailstock, and
then run the two together with a feeler gauge between them they
don't line up esactly. I mean, it's not terrible, but the feeler
gauge will tilt and not stay exactly perpendicular between them.
Could someone point me to a website with a fix for this or tell me
how to do it myself?

Thanks,
Robert

The mounting holes in the TS end pillow block are a bit oversize
to allow alignment. Loosen the mounting bolts, push the pillow block
to take out the play & tighten. If there's still too much play,
either elongate the holes or use a shim (washer) on the end of the
leadscrew. IIRC, both Varmint Al & mini-lathe.com have more details
on this.

A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I
advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives
boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the
ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no
character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of
your walks.

Best bet is to look locally.

It is too difficult to package for shipment, for the price that one
could get. It CAN be shipped by UPS, but only if their standards are
met, and if it is not in the original packaging, it's not likely to
meet their requirements.

It is also not likely that you can beat Homier's new price for a 7x12,
with a 7x10 with shipping.

I have a 7x10 that I will sell at some point, but will take less and
not consider shipping, when I do.

Original retailers like HF, Homier, Grizzly, etc. can provide
warrantee protection, and maybe stick the carriers insurance for
repairs or replacement. An individual cannot do that, because the
usual warrantee only extends to the original purchaser.

And what are you going to save off 300 bux.
