Hello! I am currently working on trying to restore the ear of on OF chubby G1
drafter. Her color is UNfortunately Dapple grey, which I am having NO luck in
matching. Any suggestions? I am using acryllics, though I can wipe them off
and try pastels, too, but I have no access ( or desire) to try oils if at all
possible.

I am kinda wishing now I had left the broken ear alone...heh!

Matching dapple grey on any breyer can be a bugger...
Breyer uses the injection molding on some of the colors and if this is the old
one its a tough color to match.
Try taking charcoal grey and titan buff and mixing the two to a shade that will
suit your needs. Titan buff and charcoal are colors produced by golden
.

Only sales for bodies and UP or prepped resins. Not anything painted.

Thank you! I had made a charcoalish color from pastel black and white, but
adding the buff made the difference!

Specifically how to color brands that are carved into the model like Salinero
has. I've got two Salineros on deck now, one light gray and one light chestnut
and I am not at all sure how to approach this.

Thanks.

Several weeks ago, I glued some small disk style bases onto a couple of custom
plastics using a two part epoxy. It intitially appeared to hold just fine. Just
now I got one of the horses out of the closet to tweak a white marking and
discovered the base was no longer staple. I could move it, as though it were
stuck on with chewing gum.

The epoxy I used was really old. Could that have had anything to do with it? The
horses were also stored in an un-arconditioned area and the temperature has been
in the 90s.

How do I fix this and prevent a recurrence? What sort of glue do you all use for
this purpose?

Thanks.

Looks like most of the time the hair turns white. I would mix that with
sepia, burnt umber, raw sienna, raw umber, depending on the color of the
horse, to get the color you need.

I have a Palomino Quarter horse that has a brand, and it is just grey/black.  I
would use a liner brush and just paint in the brand after you have finished
painting the model itself.

Maybe you could make a peg for the leg to go onto the base. If it's soft
then it didn't cure. Maybe you didn't use enough of the hardening agent. You
can always put more of the hardening part in but never the other one. Do
this and it will harden up faster. If you really want the horse stuck
forever, try baking soda and superglue. You'll have to do some sanding
afterwards, but it's a good fix.

Most burn brands (like they put on cattle) turn the color of the horse's skin
after it's healed from the branding process - so whatever color you're using for
the horse's thin-skinned areas should be fine. But, if it's a freeze brand, like
on Mustangs, layer after layer of white acrylic mixed 50-50 with gesso would be
how I would go about it.

Hope this helps!

Alex

It depends on the style of branding. I had a horse that had several brands. Some
were freeze brands (using liquid nitrogen) and those make the hair turn
permanently white.

Hot iron brands cause "scarring" so on some horses the hair will turn darker
while on others it will be a shade lighter than the actual horse. In my
gelding's case they were darker - he was bay and they were darker than his skin
but not black.

If you are doing a black horse and want the brand to show up I would say it was
a freeze brand and paint it white. On a white body color horse (grey or extreme
sabino)the freeze brand won't show up but a hot brand tends on white horses to
turn the hair a shade of gray but again not black.

If the brand is already in the model it is easy to just paint it the color you
are wanting if not I have found using DMC floss and gluing it down will make the
raised area of a hot brand and make it easier to paint once primered and ready.
With freeze brands just paint it on as they do not raise on the skin like hot
brands do.

I think the horse(s) in question are breyer Salinero molds, which have the
brands carved in.

Also, warmbloods when branded are NEVER freeze branded, they are ALWAYS hot
branded.

There is a tutorial on brands in the Carol Williams book which is helpful --
also, if you're doing the brands in pastel, what i would do is draw them in
in the first layer with a charcoal pencil or a black/dark cool grey colored
pencil, and then build up through your layers, keeping the brand slightly
depressed. You can then take a paintbrush and some black/dark grey pastel
and outline around the brand for the thinner hair on the edges. In my
experience, most warmbloods with brands only have hair on them in the
wintertime, but this IS texas and our summers are HOT. It could be very
different in other parts of the world/country.

Good luck!
Jamie

All of the ones I have seen painted on creamello models are light tan, beige or
shell (pinkish tan) so I'd stick to those and the like, on the tanish side of
colors.

Hey A.M.

You are right the chestnuts will be a pinkish tan no darker than the muzzle
and around the eyes. Good rule of thumb if the skin is black the chestnut
will be black, if the skin is pink the chestnut will be pink, in this case
the chestnut will be a brown/ pink.

Exactly, it's the same color as the muzzle. In perlino a tone with orange,
and creme a tone with pink.

Some Epoxy will not setup due to a reaction with the plastic/resin... I would
get a different brand and try a small amount with the plastic you plan to use it
on...I run into this on MANY things made of resin...Not just model horses but
any models I am tweaking and remaking. Sometimes changing brands works. Cat

The horses were also stored in an un-arconditioned area and the temperature has
been in the 90s.

I found that using a white pencil for Arab freeze marks works great on
chestnut, bay and black and a pink on greys... They leave the freeze marker on
for longer on greys so the hair does not grow back...same thing on Palomino... I
had my Palo AQHA and my Bay Arab done years ago and the lady explained it to
me....Cat
