Graduates sing praises of Muslim leadership program
For release
Melbourne – 2 December 2009
For Maryum Chaudhry, co-ordinator of the Daar Aasya Foster Care Program, the opportunity to take part in Australia’s first tertiary-accredited Muslim leadership course was a welcome gift.
“I saw the program as a missing link in my preparation for the work I do as volunteer co-ordinator at the Daar Aasya program providing advocacy and support for Muslim children in foster care,” Maryum said.
“I have been volunteering for community projects for numerous years, yet had been provided with no methodology or structure on how to achieve long-term outcomes. This course has given me fresh insight in this area which I am already putting to good use in my voluntary work.”
An initiative of the Federation of Australian Muslim Students and Youth (FAMSY), the Believe Achieve Inspire Leadership Program is a multi-streamed leadership course, co-delivered by FAMSY and Victoria University for the development of the next generation Australian Muslim community leaders.
Developed in response to the increasing demands placed on Australia’s Muslim community for effective representation and leadership, the BAILP program seeks to empower future leaders with professional and Islamic-based development opportunities.
Designed for individuals who have demonstrated outstanding community service, the program consists of two course streams: a professional development component delivered by Victoria University, developed in collaboration with the Chair Academy of the USA; and an Islamic leadership component developed by FAMSY.
The first graduates of the course, including Maryum and fellow Daar Aasya volunteer Mohamed Elmasri, completed their course last month and will graduate on Saturday.
“The program has given me a great deal of confidence by building my knowledge and capabilities to enable me to become a more effective and responsible leader in our highly under-resourced community,” Mohamed said.
“There are several sessions that I have particularly liked. In the FAMSY stream I enjoyed the discussion on conflict resolution and finance, while in the VU stream I was inspired by the corporate ethics and sustainability topics along with team management, personality traits, and project management.”
There will be a fresh intake in the course in the new year. Those interested in applying should visit www.believe-achieve-inspire.org for more information.

All About Our Club
The Muslim Girl's Club (MGC) is an innovative new club just for girls between
the ages of 5 and 18. We feel it is important for our youth to enjoy their
Islamic education and widen their friendship base with other sincere Muslims of
their own age.
What We Have To Offer
Our holiday program is designed to integrate education with interactive learning
activities to enhance memorization of the work covered. Each lesson will be
supported with games and competitions to create a challenging atmosphere in
which every girl is a winner, regardless of the outcome.
The Summer Holiday Program For January 2009
We spend our day by starting with our Islamic learning activity, followed by
lunch and then art and craft.
Islamic studies are designed to be educational and fun, according to the sunnah.
Girls will work in pairs or groups, changing those groups every day so they will
get to know everyone in their class.
Lunch in the cafeteria will be another chance to socialise. Girls can bring
their own lunch or buy from the cafeteria. The cafeteria has a wide range of
items of food and drink available. Lunch orders can be made at the cafeteria
upstairs.
The art and craft component of our course involves new and creative activities
in which our girls get to learn and develop new skills. We want every student
to feel proud of their achievements and have something special to remember the
club with.
We will be also be having two special days of fun. These are our "play" and
"film" days.
Certificate of Achievement
For those who complete the whole course, their Islamic work will be compiled
into a special book with course notes attached to keep and use as a reference
and for the whole family to benefit.
The summer holiday program will conclude with our special presentation and
certificate of accomplishment for those students who have completed the whole
course.
Supporting Our Programme
All proceeds will go towards the Muslim Children's Language School. In the near
future, we hope to also initiate the "Little Man's Club" for 5 to 8 year old
boys.
We really appreciate your support. Any sponsorship or financial backing is
greatly appreciated. You will not only be supporting our school by assisting
MCLS to run these holiday activities, you are also providing your children with
a great opportunity to learn their deen and make that learning fun.

seeing Im the ONLY known Muslim in the District. Therefore would find life
easier moving to an area with a strong Muslim Community, inshaAllah. A life that
I have always dreamed about.
Being an experianced Swimming Teacher and Coach I am hoping to get a job at the
Broadmeadows Leisure Centre for 2010.
Any help in Rental accocomodation would indeed be greatly appreciated, too!
May Allah reward your efforts, ameen.

Israel's Vice Prime Minister, Slivan Shalom, also Minister for Regional
Development in the Negev and the Gailliee, is coming to Melbourne as
part of an 'Israeli-Australian Cultural Exchange' Gala Dinner.
As a senior minister in the Israeli government, and a member of the
right wing Likud party, Shalom has overseen the continued expansion of
illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian land.
He has also been one of the most consistent defenders of Israel's brutal
policy in Gaza, which prevents Palestinian access to basic food, goods
and services.
When talking about the Israeli assault on Gaza in early 2009, which saw
the deaths of around 1500 Palestinians, Shalom is quoted as praising the
Israel army as one of the most "moral armies" in the world.

As-salaamu alaikum dear brothers and sisters,
A specious house is available for rent in Fawkner. It's 1 minute walk from
Gowrie train station, bus stop, and HALAL KFC. The location of the house is 17
Lovely Street, Fawkner. Melway Ref.: 17 G 1.
The house has two separate bathrooms and toilets, huge backyard with fruit tress
and vegetables growing in the garden.
The lounge and kitchen are fully furnished.
The owner (one person) is currently living in the house, which has two more
empty bedrooms.
So, the house could either be rented to a family, or to individuals looking for
shared accommodation. Either way is fine with us.
Each room may be rented separately. If tenants prefer to share one room, meaning
a number of friends intending to share one room, that's also fine.
The rent is negotiable. Please call the owner, Sister Tahmina, for further
queries:-
0425 892 030.
Thanks for reading this message.
Was-salaams.

PRESS RELEASE
17th November 2009
ASIO Take Note – Hamas Is Not Al Qaeda and
Occupied Palestine Is Not Afghanistan.
Australia’s main intelligence organization ASIO has indulged in politics and prejudice,
not intelligence gathering, says Asem Judeh long time human rights activist. He calls on
the Australian Greens to expose the intelligence failures in ASIO’s re-listing of Hamas’
Brigades and PIJ.
“The Senate Privileges Committee should investigate if ASIO has deliberately
misled the parliament,” he says. “Australian people expect intelligence from its
intelligence organisations, not inaccuracy, basic misinterpretations of who is the
occupying aggressor and who is the victim, and political distortion. ASIO’s
intelligence information has not changed since 2003; a lot has happened since 2003.
“If Australia is committed to a two state solution, how does presenting such biased and
inaccurate nonsense as ‘intelligence’ advance this cause? ASIO can’t even get its politics
right (and it shouldn’t be playing politics). It is about time the Australian Greens and
other fair minded politicians pointed out this failure of ASIO to serve the Australian
people.”
Judeh says ASIO has been politicized and is spreading false claims about the Palestinian
people, who have been subject to Israel’s occupation, violence and brutality for 60 years.
“ASIO has twisted the facts about the events occurred in Gaza since Hamas democratically
came to power in January 2006. ASIO’s statement treats the Israeli occupation as being similar
to the Australian army’s role in Afghanistan, which is patently ridiculous. And even if it were
true, it would mean that Israel is at war with the Palestinians, which would logically mean that
Hamas is defending itself. ASIO does not even follow through on its own erroneous ideas.”
Judeh says the international view of Hamas is changing. The United States and the European
Union are continuing to hold indirect talks with Hamas in Switzerland. He adds that concerns
are growing in Israel’s government the Palestinian unilaterally declaring independence. This is
likely to be recognized by the UN Security Council – something Israel could not get. Israel
unilaterally declared itself to be a state without UN endorsement.
“It is clear that the Palestinians are engaged in a noble cause against enormous odds,” he says.
“One of the forces against them is, it seems, Australia’s main intelligence body, which seems
determined to side with the bully, Israel. So much for Australian’s sense of fair play, and
commitment to decency. Time for our fair minded politicians to stand up.”
