I'm an animal lover too.

Have you ever read any of Dean Koontz books? He has animals in them a lot.
He is my favorite author ever, but most of his books are more thriller than
mystery. But one is great for animal lovers, Watchers. It is about a dog
that is a genius, he even types. LOL He was bred in a laboratory and
escapes. But a monster that was made at the same place escapes too, and is
tracking him.

Koontz also wrote some small books that are purportedly written by his dog,
Trixie. She was a beautiful lab, and after she died he wrote some books by
her that he said she wrote while he was sleeping. They are really good
books, light, easy reading, and very funny. She tells you how to be happy,
like a dog. Bliss to You is my favorite.

I googled it! LOL And found a book that sounds fascinating. The
Zookeepers Wife. It takes place during WWII in Warsaw. The zookeeper and
his wife hide Jews in the zoo, and also in their villa. I have requested it
from my library and look forward to reading it. Thanks for getting me
interested. LOL

Oh, it is by Diane Ackerman.

All my dear friends are quiet today.

I found one book about a zookeeper today - THE ANTEATER OF DEATH by Betty Webb
and it looks like she only wrote one in the series. Did anyone read it?

My question is do any of you know of mysteries with zookeepers as the main
character? I had no other luck at stopyourekillingme

Hi I'm Shelby the newbie!  Julie, thanks for telling me aobut this group.

Happy Birthday Tish!

I was just checking out Susan Wittig Albert on Amazon - she is an author I'd
like to try this year.

If no one saw my intro that came from the moderator.  I have not read the Miss
Read books yet but I do want too and that is why I joined.  They are on my to
read list this year when I get them.  I'm waiting on paperbackswap to see when
they come up.  Believe it or not my library only has two of the books and not
the first one.

I'm almost 40, married, live in PA - love reading, bible study and devotions,
cooking and making new friends.

First, Happy Birthday Tish, and many more!

The Journal book of Beatrix Potter sounds wonderful, and I will try and get it
from the library.  Fortunately we have an excellent library system....they have
even found books for me in Colorado and arranged to borrow them for me!

The Victorian series she and her husband Bill co-authored is excellent, in many
ways I like it  better that the Herb series (Otherwise known as the "China
Bayles" books, after the main character).

The first book in this series has a young penniless relative invited to be a
secretary to a previously unknown Aunt in England.  She is, like most of
Alberts main characters, independent and self reliant and had been  making
her living somewhat successfully as a writer of "potboilers" : lurid mysteries
for the newspapers.  She is excited about having the experience of traveling as
fodder for her mysteries, but she gets more than she bargains for in a real live
murder.  This first book is Death at Bishops Keep.  In the second book she
meets Beatrix Potter, who helps her solve a mystery in  Death at Gallows Green
There are about 12 in the series, each with a specific character (The Prince
of Wales, Lily Langtree, Jack London) or a theme like the "modern"
inventions of the camera and wireless telegraph  or plots to blow up something
and spies.  They are very well researched and written and I love them!

The Beatrix Potter series are mysteries, sometimes involving murder, but the
focus is the characters and the village.

She is beginning a new series set in a small town in 1930's America.  I can't
wait for its release next summer.

Not to mention Winter at Thrush Green.  I hope our library can get it soon!

The mysteries she and her husband write together are under the name Robin Paige.
They've Victorians.

The Beatrix Potter ones are also mysteries, right?

If you enjoy mysteries that interconnect with television programs might I
suggest some of the wonderful PBS related books from Mystery? Foyle's War is a
great series and so are the novels.
Elizabeth George's wonderful mystery novels have been compressed into the
Inspector Lynley series for TV, also excellent reading. I particularly enjoyed
the Brother Cadfael series with Derek Jacobi based on Ellis Peters' historical
mystery novels.

Iread two Murder She Wrote mysteries by Donald Bain, selected because of the
settings. One was in Scotland and the other in Savannah, Georgia. There is no
need to read the series in order as the stories are not related, and pretty much
follow the same characters and format as the TV show. I prefer more blood and
gore so they are not at all my usual kind of reading choice and any review I
might give reflects my having dabbled in the wrong literary pool. I had some
trouble with the ghost story in the Savannah book, but they are written by a
professional, and probably could be filmed with little editing. They are fast
and easy so I suggest you try one.

Also, did anyone ever read any of the Heartsong Presents Mysteries?

I knew this song was on one of Reba's Christmas Albums and it took me this long
to find it.

Do you remember THE CHRISTMAS GUEST??

Here are the lyrics ...

It happened one day near December's end,
Two neighbors called on an old friend.
And they found his shop so meager and lean
Made gay with thousand bows of green
And Conrad was sitting with face a-shine
When he suddenly stopped as he stitched a twine
And he said "Old friends, at dawn today,
When the cock was crowing the night away
The Lord appeared in a dream to me
And said "I'm coming your guest to be."
So I've been busy with feet astir and
Strewing my shop with branches of fir.
The table is spread and the kettle is shined.
And over the rafters the holly is twined.
Now I'll wait for my Lord to appear
And listen closely so I will hear
His step as He nears my humble place.
And I'll open the door and look on His face.
So his friends went home and left Conrad alone
For this was the happiest day he had known,
For long since, his family had passed away
And Conrad had spent many a sad Christmas Day.
But he knew with the Lord as his Christmas Guest
This Christmas would be the dearest and best.
So he listened with only joy in his heart
And with every sound he would rise with a start
And look for the Lord to be at his door,
Like the vision he had had a few hours before.
So he ran to the window after hearing a sound
But all he could see on the snow covered ground
Was a shabby beggar whose shoes were torn
And all of his clothes were ragged and worn.
But Conrad was touched and he went to the door
And he said, "You know, your feet must be frozen and sore.
I have some shoes in my shop for you
And a coat that will keep you warmer too."
So with grateful heart the man went away
but Conrad noticed the time of day
And wondered what made the Lord so late
And how much longer he'd have to wait.
When he heard a knock, he ran to the door
But it was only a stranger once more.
A bent old lady with a shawl of black
With a bundle of kindling piled on her back.
She asked for only a place to rest
But that was reserved for Conrad's Great Guest.
But her voice seemed to plead "Don't send me away,
Let me rest for awhile on Christmas Day",
So Conrad brewed her a steaming cup
And told her to sit at the table and sup.
But after she left he was filled with dismay
For he saw that the hours were slipping away
And the Lord hadn't come as he said he would.
Then Conrad felt sure he had misunderstood.
When out of the stillness he heard a cry
“Please help me and tell me where am I?"
So again he opened his friendly door
And stood disappointed as twice before.
It was only a child who’d wandered away
And was lost from her family on Christmas Day.
Again Conrad's heart was heavy and sad
But he knew he should make the little girl glad.
So he called her in and he wiped her tears
And quieted all her childish fears.
Then he led her back to her home once more
But as he entered his own darkened door
he knew the Lord was not coming today.
For the hours of Christmas had passed away
So he went to his room and knelt down to pray
And he said "Dear Lord, why did you delay?
What kept you from coming to call on me?
For I wanted so much your face to see.”
When soft in the silence a voice he heard.
"Lift up your head for I kept my word.
Three times my shadow crossed your floor
And three times I came to your lonely door.
I was the beggar with bruised, cold feet
And I was the woman you gave something to eat.
I was the child on the homeless street.
Three times I knocked, and three times I came in.
And each time I found the warmth of a friend.
Of all the gifts, love is the best.
And I was honored to be your Christmas Guest.

I also liked Harris' Harper Connelly series, Grave Sight, Grave Surprise, Ice
Cold Grave, and Grave Secret.
I have read almost all of her books.
I'm going to start the Lily Baird series this winter.

The series is an older one.  The last I saw, Charlaine said she had no
current plans to add to the series but you never know.  Honestly though, the
way the last book ended things, I don't really know where she could take the
series without repeating anything, KWIM?

Have any of you ever read Dolores Johnson (dry cleaning mysteries) or Lee Harris
(she is a former nun now living on Long Island and raising a family) - I've read
every one of Lee Harris's and loved them and I think I have only one Dolores
Johnson left to read. They are very good.

Can't say I ever hear of the author. You can probably check her out on World
Cataloging just to see what sort of books she's previously written. Lots of

Hi, Shelby,

This group has been rather quiet of late. But we are all mystery fans. I enjoy
cozies, love mysteries with humor, but will read most types of mystery novels.
I'm not a fan of really gory novels or serial killer tales, however. I just
finished reading Brad Meltzer's Book of Lies. First novel I've read by this
author. It's a thriller that keeps you turning the pages and has many
interesting twists and turns.

I'm pleased to say that Five Star has contracted my third romantic mystery novel
THE TRUTH SLEUTH and it will be published in hardcover sometime in 2011. It will
continue from where
THE DROWNING POOL leaves off with a whole new set of murders for Kim Reynolds,
librarian and amateur sleuth, to solve. Mike and Bert are part of the plot
needless to say. There will be a number of surprising events in the new novel.

If you haven't read either THE INFERNO COLLECTION or THE DROWNING POOL, you
might want to check them out on Amazon or B&N online.

Anyway, happy holidays! And happy reading everyone!

Shelby, where do you live? We have been getting rain this evening, it is 36
degrees right now, but it is supposed to be really windy overnight and
tomorrow. We had a bit of snow yesterday morning, lots of wrecks, people
seem to forget how to drive when we get the first snow. It just barely
covered the ground, but they said our county had over 50 wrecks. I just
looked at the 12 hour forecast and it looks like we are only going to get
rain, it is going up to 40 by morning. So, I guess we lucked out.

How about you? You getting hit by the storm?
Becca

Becca, are you getting hit hard by the storm?

I didn't expect it would hit here as hard as it has ...
