Mark,

Check out these pictures that I took of a Billboard on Route 27 and Kate
Wagner Road in Carroll County which advertises an "Annual Haunted
Hayride". Am I wrong or is this the image of an American Indian? This
may be a good example of the use of stereotypes in "images" that you
talked about with the students at McDaniel College. I really find this
interesting, you would think someone might have raised a "concern" at
the time this Billboard was being approved for display. Wow!

I personally except your apology.
But, Being an American Indian born and raised in Baltimore County I've never
heard of this "Chief Twenty Bones" character. So I will in-turn be looking up
this legend myself.

I will also be taking a ride down Rt. 27 on Saturday to get a look at the new
billboard. I also wish you luck in your haunted house fund-raising.

   Thank You for your assistance,

     To all we have offended,

This evening our membership voted unanimously to extend to all Native
Americans our sincere apology.

Attached is our official letter that will hopefully address everyone concerns
regarding the Billboard.

As a side note, please be aware that we discovered only two Billboards that
contained the offensive image. Four years ago we were contacted by several
Native Americans who expressed many of the same views that we have received in
the last 24 hours. At that time, we removed all likenesses of this image and
retired the "Chief Twenty Bones" Character from our Hayride permanently.

The Billboards that we display each year for our hayride are reused each year
until they are no longer fit for display. (The vinyl posters are stored by the
Billboard companies for reuse.) It was our oversight that these billboards
(which are displayed a significant distance away from Lineboro) were still in
use. We are not trying to make excuses, only shedding some history on why these
images were still in circulation.

The story of Chief Twenty Bones is documented in a book Titled "The Ghosts and
Legends of Carroll County" by Jessie Glass. Our intentions were simply to
chronicle a local ghost story.

This image may continue to exist on web sites that we are not aware of . If
you discover any please contact us so that we may request they be removed.

   Again, please accept our apology.

   Respectfully,

The Members and Officers of the Lineboro Volunteer Fire Department.

Subject: DNA and GENEALOGY
whiteturtle.geo

This is the first response to the lastest PBS aired program on
African American Lives 2. It is clear that the use of DNA is being
used as a tool to finally silence African Americans of their Native
Aboriginal heritage in this land. DNA used in crime cases has been
perfected, in parental findings perfected to 99.99%. Now, in the use
of genealogy it is still being perfected and is in it's experimental
stages. (In Many Ways, We Send Much Thanks & Good Prayers To Those
Scientist, Anthropologist, Archaeologist, Historians, Genealolgist
and Researchers who are working hard to make history as accurate as
possible. We understand that some are truly trying to make things
right! For some of you, we also understand you are continuing an
injustice and the use of DNA to finally finish off the last remnants
to these tribes)
DNA from Full Blood Native Americans and Africans has been gathered
for the last 8 to 10 yrs, if that long to use in genelogy. To find a
Full Blood along the North, East and South of this country is rare in
this day in time from the original Aboriginal peoples of these areas
which, is what the DNA is being based on. Blood Quantum is used to
detemine how much of an Aboriginal Native Indian you are. Native
Aboriginal peoples
from these areas were the first to encounter the Europeans hundreds
of years before they ever reached the Southwest or the California
coastline. Native
Aboriginal peoples from these areas who refused demands of these
invaders were some of the first peoples used in slavery. The African
was next. Traditional marriages between the African and Aboriginal
peoples of this land as well as with Europeans before the advent of
slavery. No, Native peoples of these areas did not own
other Human Beings until they tried to show the whites that they were
there kind of strong too. Only certain tribal nations participated in
this
during the mid 18th & 19th centuries. There are those of you who
want to say that these African American people whos oral history says
they have Indian
in their family, their grand or great grandmother was Indian some of
you push it lightly aside that these were just slaves of the Natives
or the Five Cilvilized Tribes. It is disrespectful of anyone to
think that Native people did not honor the sacredness of any
marriage. To say "You know how Black people claim alot of stuff" is
very sad, sad indeed. No one was jumping up to admit to having
Native American (Indian) in their family. Something that could cost
you even your life and or the life of your family! You were taught in
the old days if publicaly asked if you were Indian to say, Colored,
Negro,
Mulatto or Other or by the time the census man came
around!........ That kind of information was mainly shared within the
families of the African Americans and rarely to outsiders for fear
over the centuries of all kinds of persecutions. On the North, East,
Southern side of the country any open recognition of ancestry to
Aboriginal tribes had to just disappear and it seems they are still
being told to disappear. No one seems to have the COURAGE to open
the door to the true history between those early Europeans and Native
peoples. Courage to open the true door of these tribes and how they
were
systematically murdered, sold into slavery, denied rights unless they
had European ancestry and now today, DNA. To say that an African
American has any
percentage of Native American ancestry is taken so lightly, as if a
joke. When it should be an alarm that after hundreds of years any
sign is left. Yet many of these Indian Nations and tribes are said
not to exist any longer though their decendants do and
bear the remnants in their DNA to prove it. In as late as the last
part of the 19th
century fear was once again struck in many of the last few full blood
elders to deny the mix bloods heritage. In the early coming of the
European the North, East and Southern tribe of this country were
mostly matriarchal and the women inherited the wealth so Whites began
to marry the woman of these tribes with thought of land ownership,
property, etc., until a way was found to completely take it all.
Before the European arrived there were no Chiefs, no Kings, no
Queens, no Prince or Princess. Only respected and honored head
people who had specific duties to carry out on behalf of everyone in
that nation/tribe. There are Aboriginal tribes of the North, East
and Southern parts of this country whose ancestors left many messages
for all people to know that is passed up through the oral history of
their decendants. One that stands out during these times, "Honor the
African (Blacks), for through them we are still here." Creator bless
these words in all they sacred names we
pray this little message is heard.

If you can't make it, please consider sending a donation to the Baltimore
American Indian Center, P.O. Box 6171, Balto, MD 21231

Your center is in need of funds to continue.

We have a powwow coming up July 9th & 10th, we have a museum being built on the
first floor, we have an online gift shop soon to open. Without your support
you will soon NOT have an Indian Center. Think about it. The center needs you.

Native American boy suspended from school for long hair, ACLU steps into La.
Case

(CBS/AP) NEW ORLEANS - Long hair led a 13-year-old native American boy to get
suspended from a Louisiana junior high school, but the American Civil Liberties
Union says the Houma Indian teen who grows his hair long for cultural and
religious reasons was suspended illegally.
ACLU executive director Marjorie Esman says Seth Chaisson was suspended March 15
and 16 from Juban Park Junior High in Denham Springs. The ACLU wants a guarantee
that he can stay, with reprimands and discipline erased from his record. He was
allowed back in the Livingtston Parish school last Thursday.
Esman says the boy has the same right to long hair that a Christian student has
to wear a cross or a Jewish boy to wear a yarmulke to school.
Esman said Chaisson "is becoming more in tune with his own religious beliefs.
Just as a junior high school student might decide to wear a cross that they had
never wanted to wear before,
he has now decided to grow his hair out in a way he had never decided to do
before."
Ed Foster, supervisor of child welfare and attendance for the Livingston Parish
School System, says he has scheduled a meeting Friday with the teen's mother.

Below is the letter I sent to the emails below. Please feel free to use it or
change it to fit you. And of course you are welcome to copy and paste.

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Thomas Greywolf Atkins, I am an American Indian of the Chickahominy &
Mattaponi. It has came to my attention that the Livingston Parish school
district has a policy that violates the Spiritual & Religious rights of American
Indian youth. Case in point, young Mr. Seth Chaisson.  How Dare You!
Would you force a Christian youth to not wear his cross, a Jewish youth not to
wear his yarmulke? You have shown the world that you have no respect for
American Indians or their culture.
My only question is; What is your school system going to do about this issue?
How is this going to be corrected and made right? We as well as the press are
watching.

Your immediate attention to this matter is needed,

Weli kishku,

This is a note to let All of you who are still interested in the
protection of Native rights or are new to Indigenous activism that we are still
here.
The American Indian Injustice Group (A.I.I.) has been around since 1998. We are
Not For Profit and All Volunteer.
Our original group founded on yahoo has worked hard for Native Rights for over
12 years. We here at A.I.I. are a dedicated Family of Mixed & Full Blood Native
and non-Native Peoples. Our members are from all over the globe.
We Fight the Daily Injustices perpetrated against Indigenous Peoples throughout
the Western Hemisphere. We do this by issuing A.I.I. Alerts. These Alerts are
intended to give all persons concerned with Native Issues a clear concise report
of an Injustice to be fought through E-mail, Letter and Phone Campaigns to the
Offending Parties, Politician's, Attorney's and the News Media.
We do not pit Native against Native here. We will not question your "NDNess"
here.
There are those who do not understand why we send out an A.I.I.Alert from an
already printed news story. One major reason we use an already printed or
broadcasted news story. Is because they have already had the facts and sources
checked out. The reason we use them again is really rather simple. We know that
not everyone, read's every story. We know that any story is relevant.
Meaning that what is not important to you or your Nation/Tribe may be life
altering to someone else. When you read an A.I.I.Alert, they may very well seem
overly dramatic for what you percieve as an issue of little consequence. Yet to
the people it is happening to, our Alert isn't dramatic enough.
That's done on purpose and with reason. We want to get your attention. Similarly
to the way the newspaper does with a flamboyant headline or the way a news
broadcast does with a station break zinger. We want you to read it.
Unlike any other group or organization that is dedicated to Native Issues.
Unlike the newspapers and broadcasters(who must remain neutral). We Do Not.
We include the contact information with email addresses, phone numbers or snail
mail addresses in which to contact those who are effecting Native Peoples in a
negative way, that are showcased in each particular A.I.I.Alert.
The whole point of these Alerts is very simple. To band us all together to help
our Native Brothers & Sisters.
Remember This,
When you pass up an A.I.I.Alert today just because you don't think
it's important to you or in your opinion it is a trivial cause or maybe you just
don't like the person sending the message.
Tomorrow's Alert may be something you do care about, but others will have the
same attitude about what you think is important and they will ignore your cause.
Bottom Line: If we as Native Peoples are to get anything done for other Native
Peoples who aren't in as good a position as we are. Then we might as well give
the Invaders to this land everything they came to steal. Stop fighting for
Reservation money, Trust money, Land or Native Rights to the land or
Recognition.
After All, The only important issue is the one that concerns you, Right!
WRONG!
If you give them an inch, they'll take a mile. That's why we must not consider
any Native issue as Trivial, Period!

The American Indian Injustice Group has now expanded to Facebook. The hope is
that we can reach a larger audience to
broaden our group base and in turn have a better effect on the issues.
