Subject: "My Reincarnation" - help get it to come to Raleigh!

Hi Everyone,

The folks at the Rialto/Colony Theaters have requested that Namkhai Norbu
Rinpoche's documentary film My Reincarnation (http://myreincarnationfilm.com/)
be screened in the Raleigh area, and it sounds like there is a possibility that
this may happen. The makers said it will be helpful if people show interest, and
have set up an Eventful site here
(http://eventful.com/performers/my-reincarnation-/P0-001-001163098-5) for this
purpose.

From the "My Reincarnation" Web site:

MY REINCARNATION is an epic father-son drama, spanning two decades and three
generations, about spirituality, cultural survival, identity, inheritance,
family, growing old, growing up, faith, meditation, religion, magic, dreaming,
Buddhism, Dzogchen — and past and future lives. The film follows the renowned
reincarnate Tibetan spiritual master, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, as he struggles to
save his spiritual tradition, and his Italian born son, Yeshi, who stubbornly
refuses to follow in his father's footsteps...

VOTE NOW!

Thanks!

Study Group

The Study Group meets on Thursday evenings from 6:45–8:00, following zazen at 6:00 p.m., at the Chapel Hill Zen Center, and it will resume meeting on January 12. We will study the newly published book, Dogen's Genjo Koan: Three Commentaries. Dogen Zenji was the founder of Soto Zen in Japan, and his teachings and practice have informed our tradition since his time. The book includes commentaries on the text the "Genjokoan" by Nishiari Bokusan, Shunryu Suzuki, and Kosho Uchiyama. Nishiari Bokusan was a monk and the most prominent Dogen scholar of the 19th century; and Suzuki Roshi, Sawaki Roshi and Katagiri Roshi all studied with disciples of Bokusan Roshi. Copies of Dogen's Genjo Koan are available for purchase at the zendo. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge.

Beginning Zen Practice -
A Class with David Guy

The class will meet for six weeks on Monday nights, 7:30 to 9:00, January 23, through February 27, at the Chapel Hill Zen Center. The first night will begin with meditation instruction and a short period of sitting. Each week we will continue to meditate at the beginning of class, gradually increasing the time. Students will have a chance to ask questions about their meditation practice, and other aspects of Zen practice will be presented, including how to bring the practice of awareness into daily life, walking meditation and sutra chanting. But the focus will be on Zen meditation and the students' actual practice as it unfolds, and the content of the class will emerge from students' questions and concerns.

The fee is $60, payable the first night, and will be contributed to the Zen Center. Partial scholarships are available. For more information, or to sign up, please contact David Guy at (919) 286-4952 or davidguy@...

David Guy has been practicing meditation since 1991, and regularly gives meditation instruction at the Chapel Hill Zen Center. He has co-authored two books with Larry Rosenberg of the Cambridge Insight Meditation Center – Breath by Breath: The Liberating Practice of Insight Meditation and Living in the Light of Death: On the Art of Being Truly Alive – and has been a Contributing Editor to tricycle: The Buddhist Review. David is also the author of the novel, Jake Fades: A Novel of Impermanence.

Sutra Copying - Shakyo

Shakyo or copying sutras is a traditional Buddhist practice and another way to embody the teaching. Often the Great Wisdom Beyond Wisdom Heart Sutra is chosen since it can be easily copied in one session. There will be several different translations of the Heart Sutra available, but it is appropriate to copy any sutra or fascicle by Dogen Zenji that you wish. Bring your choice of pens and paper, and join us on Saturday afternoon, January 21, from 1:00–3:00, at the Chapel Hill Zen Center. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge.

ZEN WRITING PRACTICE
AN INTERESTING AND POWERFUL BLEND OF SILENCE AND WORDS
MEETS THE FIRST WEDNESDAY OF EVERY MONTH, 7:00 PM. AT THE NORTH CAROLINA ZEN CENTER, PITTSBORO.

THIS GROUP IS OPEN TO ANYONE, REGARDLESS OF EXPERIENCE IN WRITING, MEDITATION OR ZEN. IT IS FREE. NO COMMITMENT NECESSARY, COME AS OFTEN AS YOU LIKE. PLEASE BRING PAPER AND PEN.

Here is a general description of how the group works: someone will be the “leader”. We will sit in meditation for a short time (10-15 minutes or so), then we will do “walking meditation” for another five minutes or so, and then we will sit back down and write on a given topic for a period of time announced by the leader. Then those who want to will read what they wrote (no one has to read, but it is understood that part of what is very valuable about this experience is the open sharing of what we’ve written). There is NO analysis or criticism or commenting or discussion of the reading. After all have read, the leader has us write again for another period of time, then we read again, perhaps we sit together again for a bit, and write some more, and read again.
The instruction for the writing: we start writing immediately as soon as we hear the topic â€" no editing, no judging, we keep the pen moving until the leader says the time is up.
Zen Writing Practice is practice in writing, but on an even deeper level it is practice in being spontaneous, in being present, in being open to what comes. And the big bonus: it is almost unfailingly wonderful fun!
Interested? Questions? Please call or email me.

New Hope Sangha's Spring Meditation Retreat
Friday, April 13 through Sunday, April 15

We live during a time when our world is quickly changing. We are witnessing the
overthrow of totalitarian regimes, advances in technology including social media
and world wide financial and economic uncertainty. This begs the question, is
there any stable ground to stand on? During this retreat we will explore how
living with uncertainty and change, in its many manifestations, can be an
effective catalyst for spiritual growth. The Buddha taught that all things in
this conditioned realm are impermanent and ever changing, but there is that
within each of us that is unborn, undying and changeless. Knowing and resting in
this ground of our being we are able to live skillfully and lovingly in our
world of great change. This retreat and the practices we will be using will help
each of us find this ground of being within ourselves. The weekend will include
instruction in Insight Meditation, silent meditation practice, dharma talks and
chanting from various spiritual traditions.

The Eno River Buddhist Community will host a special evening with Dhamma teacher Gregory Kramer on the last Monday of this month. Additional details are provided below. We hope that you can join us.

The Truth of Spiritual Isolation, Its Origin, Its Cessation, and the Path to Its Cessation

a talk by Gregory Kramer

Monday, April 30, 7:30-9:30 pm

sponsored by the Eno River Buddhist Community

This talk will consider notions we hold as participants in Buddhist practice groups that may be limiting our fullness of engagement in this path of awakening. We'll explore new possibilities—revealed when deep meditation is experienced in relation—for the role of spiritual community and friendships in fostering investigation, energy, and genuine insight.

About the teacher: Gregory Kramer has been teaching Vipassana and Loving-kindness meditation since 1980.  He is director of the Metta Foundation and a visiting faculty member at the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies.  Gregory is cocreator of Insight Dialogue, a relational meditation form based on a relational understanding of early Buddhist teachings.  Gregory teaches Insight Dialogue worldwide.

Location: Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Fellowship Hall, 4907 Garrett Road, Durham NC, 27707

Registration for this event is not required. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Lori Ebert at lebert@....

In keeping with the Buddhist tradition, Gregory Kramer is offering this program on a dana basis as a gift of the dhamma.  Participants will be given the opportunity to practice dana (generosity) by making a donation to support Gregory's work as a teacher.

Leigh Brasington leighbrasington

at Triangle Insight
Don't make your Memorial Day vacation plans without considering this unique opportunity to hear a very gifted meditation teacher. The Triangle Insight Meditation Community is pleased to announce that Leigh Brasington has accepted our invitation to join us for a talk on "The Fruits of the Spiritual Life" (Digha Nikaya, 2).  He will be arriving following his retreat at Southern Dharma, so this will be a special gathering on Friday night that you will not want to miss. Several of our members have studied with Leigh and can confirm his reputation as a sincere practitioner and skillful meditation teacher with extensive knowledge of the suttas and the meditative absorptions (jhanas).

Our schedule will be to open with a 30 min. meditation period, followed by Leigh's talk, with Q&A and closing Metta, and then a social/meet-and-greet to end the evening.  Leigh offers his teachings on a dana basis, and appreciates your generosity.

Leigh Brasington has been practicing meditation since 1985 and is the senior American student of the late Ven. Ayya Khema. She confirmed his practice and requested that he begin teaching. Leigh began assisting Ven. Ayya Khema in 1994 and has been leading retreats on his own in both Europe and North America since 1997.  Leigh's web site is http://www.leighb.com/
