Description

Nevsehir or Neapolis of Cappadocia
This is a forum in English for both the Muslim Turks inhabitants of modern Nevsehir, Central Anatolia (ancient Cappadocia), Turkey, and the descendants of the Greek Orthodox inhabitants of Nevsehir / Neapolis until 1922. This is a list of friendship and common history and not a list of conflict.

Nevsehir must be close to Byzantine Nyssa, important city of Cappadocia in the 7th c. Nyssa was inhabited by Greek speaking Eastern Roman (Byzantine) inhabitants during the Late Roman period. After the battle of Manzikert (1071) the area of Nevsehir was occupied by Suljuk Turks and later (1308) by the Mongols until the early 16th c. when Sultan Selim I reoccupied the area for the Ottoman Turks. In the early 18th c. Nevsehirli Damat Ibrahim Pasha, who orginated from the village, became the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire and took a great interest in the construction of the city of Nevsehir. This decision attracted a lot of Greek orthodox inhabitants of the area of Cappadocia. By the early 20th c. the Greek Orthodox population of the city had grown to the point that had taken over completely the political and financial administration of Nevsehir as it is proven by the 1913 edition of the 'Mikrasiatikon Hemerologion' published by the Greek Orthodox community of Nevsehir in 1 December 1912. In 1922 the end of the Greco-Turkish war forced the Greek orthodox population to abundon their original homeland and move to modern Greece. Since then Nevsehir has grown to a modern city of 70.000 inhabitants in central Turkey. Nevsehir will always remail the historical place of origin for both Greek Orhtodox and Muslim Turks who once lived or still live in the city.
