100 Black Women Day at the Capitol

Keynote Speakers State Representatives Dee Dawkins Haigler & Pam Stephenson

To kick off its Women’s Empowerment Weekend, the Stone Mountain-Lithonia Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. (NCBWSML) will conduct its first Coalition of Advocacy Day Summit  - A United Voice for Change - A Day of Empowerment & Motivation - in Atlanta Georgia at the Capitol Friday April 10, 2009 from 9am to 3pm. This awareness campaign will bring over 100 women from across the metro Atlanta area to meet with their elected officials and to urge their support for affordable and accessible healthcare, quality education for all children, and tangible solutions to eradicate Metro Atlanta’s high foreclosure rate.

The purpose of this day is to educate attendees in the state legislative process and to open the dialogue between members and legislators regarding issues that affect the African American Community.

This one day awareness summit will allow women to meet with legislative leaders from their districts to discuss issues and give elected officials an opportunity to understand that the Coalition of 100 Black Women is a viable African American organization that brings substantive and legitimate issues to the Georgia General Assembly for its review and consideration. “This Summit will allow women from all facets of life to become viable participants in the political process,” says Rep. Dee Dawkins-Haigler (HD 93) who is a member of the Stone Mountain Lithonia Chapter of the 100 Black Women and one of the organizers of the event.

Talvia Peterson, an Independent Executive Sales Director with Mary Kay and also an organizer of the event, agreed. “Community members must be bold and fearless in confronting the issues that concern women of color and children, and work to effectuate change. This Summit will guide them through the process.”

Registration is only $15* per person and includes lunch and all resource materials.

Canada has someone the US isn't telling us about.

The Governor General of Canada is the vice-regal or viceroy representative in Canada of the Queen of Canada , who is the head of state. A viceroy is a royal official who governs a country in the name of and as representative of the monarch.

Canada is one of sixteen British Commonwealth realms, all of which share the British monarch as their royal leader. The monarch appoints the Governor General on the advice of the Canadian Prime Minister, who is the Canadian Head of Government, after which the Governor General maintains direct contact with the British monarch. There is no specific term.

President Barack Obama and Canadian Governor General Michaelle Jean walk across the tarmac following his arrival in Ottawa , Canada , Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009. Michelle Jean has been Governor General of Canada since September 27, 2005.

Jean is Canada 's first black Governor General.

President Barack Obama and Canadian Governor General Michaelle Jean chat during a meeting following his arrival in Ottawa , Canada , Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009.

Executive power of Canada
Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, is the sovereign and Head of State of Canada, and gives repository of executive power, judicial and legislative power; as expressed in Constitution of Canada:

The Prime Minister of Canada is currently Stephen Harper. The prime minister is appointed by the Governor General, who is now Michaelle Jean, but to ensure the continuity of a stable government, this person must have the confidence of the House of Commons to lead the government.

The Prime Minister of Canada is the primary Minister of the Crown, chairman of the Cabinet, and thus head of government of Canada . The office is not outlined in any of the documents that constitute the written portion of the constitution of Canada and executive authority is formally vested in the Canadian sovereign and exercised on his or her behalf by the Governor General.

President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper walk down on the way to a news conference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa , February 19, 2009.

Michaëlle Jean (born September 6, 1957, in Port-au-Prince , Haiti ) is the current Governor General of Canada . Jean was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II, on the recommendation of Prime Minister Paul Martin, to succeed Adrienne Clarkson and become the 27th Governor General of Canada since Confederation in 1867. Prior to this, Jean was a journalist and broadcaster on Radio-Canada and the CBC.

As the current Governor General of Canada , she is entitled to be styled Her Excellency while in office, and The Right Honourable for life; given current practice, she will be sworn in to the Queen's Privy Council for Canada after her term as the Queen's representative has ended.

Jean fled Haiti with her family from dictator François Duvalier's regime in 1968. Her father, from whom she was estranged for many years, was a philosopher who was tortured under Duvalier's regime and separated from the family for 30 years. The Jean family settled at Thetford Mines , Quebec ..

As a student at the University of Montreal , Jean received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Italian and Hispanic languages and literature and, from 1984 until 1986, taught Italian studies while completing a Master of Arts degree in comparative literature. Jean attended the University of Florence , the University of Perugia , and the Catholic University of Milan to continue her studies in language and literature. Besides French and English, Jean is fluent in Spanish, Italian, and Haitian Creole and can read Portuguese.

Morris Brown Building Auctioned For $900,000

Tuesday, March 3, 2009 – updated: 2:07 pm EST March 3, 2009

ATLANTA -- Morris Brown College's Jordan Hall was sold at auction Tuesday for $900,000.
Investors bought the building during a sale on the steps of the Fulton County Courthouse.

SLIDESHOW: Morris Brown Building Auctioned

The proceeds will be deducted from the college's debt from a $13.1 million construction loan for the building.
Jordan Hall houses classrooms and an art gallery and had twice before been scheduled for auction in January and February.
It is the latest in the school's setbacks as it struggles to emerge from $30 million in debt. Last month, Morris Brown was granted an extension on $214,000 in overdue water bills.
Supporters say the sale will not close Morris Brown. Dorms will remain open and students and faculty will continue to report to classes.

One of my fellow Sorors and her mom is renting a room in their HUGE
pre-war apartment.
THE ROOM IS VERY PRIVATE
It has 2 full closets, hard wood floors and plenty of sunlight. The
approximate measurements are 14X16, maybe a little bigger.
The kitchen and bathroom are shared.
The building is very safe, the 2 bus stops on the side of the building
and the "C" train is less than a block away.
The grocery store, laundromat (there's one in the basement too), and
other stores are all one short block away. The building is is situated
on a block with private brownstones, very quiet and upscale.
The building is also across the street from a historic landmark.

Please keep in mind it is an older building so it has no central air or
heat and the kitchen and bathroom are not renovated...

The rent covers all utilities and cable with all premiums.

If interested, please send me an email and I will forward to her.

Good luck!

*Subject:* Two Housing Programs offered by the US Treasury

If you or someone you know needs to refinance their home, here is
information on the housing programs unveiled by the White House last week:

1) A Home Affordable Refinance Program to Provide Access to Low Cost
Refinancing for Responsible Homeowners Suffering From Falling Home
Prices: Provide the Opportunity for Up to 4 to 5 Million /Responsible/
Homeowners to Refinance: Mortgage rates are currently at historically
low levels, providing homeowners with the opportunity to reduce their
monthly payments by refinancing.

2) A Home Affordable Modification to Reach Up to 3 to 4 Million At-Risk
Homeowners: This program is intended to reach millions of /responsible
/homeowners who are struggling to afford their mortgage payments because
of the current recession, yet cannot sell their homes because prices
have fallen so significantly.

Go to http://www.financialstability.gov/ for more information.

A Couple of notes:

The Refinance Program ends *June 2010* and the Modification Program ends
*December 2012*. For both programs you can only have one 30 day late
payment in the last 12 months. You can help yourself and other qualify
for these programs by providing financial training and credit
counseling. They are currently working on brochures for distribution.

*_These programs are FREE_*. Spread the words to circumvent fraudulent
activities, i.e. "paying to avoid foreclosure."

Right now the Loans covered by these programs are Freddie Mac and Fannie
Mae. The treasury is starting to sign contacts with commercial lenders.
You can go to the website to see if your lender is part of the program.
