It was hot and these small gnats or some such bug had a feast on me.
The weather was nice cause it didnt rain. One thing which they need to
do there is decrease auto emisions. I would like to see the national
parks use shuttles more. The surrounding area is really growing with
development in SMNP. Wildernessed, sorry to see you are moving i have
enjoyed your posts on the old group

I sent two post through, they didn't show up last night or this am,
maybe later. I didn't want rewrite everything either, but basically I
will stay a member, still contribute on the boards and offer advice
and help that way, I have pretty much backpacked and hiked everywhere
around here have all the maps, guidebooks etc..., and will be back on
occasion. I was planning on flying in to Columbus have steve picke me
up, after he builds my guest room and basecamp out of there then
visit up in NW Ohio where I have all my relatives. Think of me as
being an outpost in the PNW for Ohio.

Steve Parmenter (ohbackpacker) of Columbus, Ohio will be the group
Leader, I hate to use owner because the people in a group will
ultimately determine through their actions the capacity for a group
to grow and thrive, but I think selectiveness and access as well as
group self-pruning of nonparticipants (posotive attitudes and peer
pressure) will make thing work. Steve has been a staple member of the
Ohio backpacking community, previous Ohio Backoackers group, Several
other Ultralight and backpacking groups. I have been on many trips
with him and for an old guy he's got game, works in a organization in
a leadership position and will be a mature experienced, calm, guiding
force for the group.

Hi,
I am new to the group and would like to introduce myself. I live in
NE Ohio (Painesville area) and am also a BSA leader and high
adventure coordinator. I am interested in paddling and backpacking
and am interested in sharing information. I am a lightweight
backpacker (30 lbs for a week in the bush) and am interested in more
ultralight methods. I just returned memorial weekend from a week long
wilderness paddling trip at Algonquin and will be leaving in 4 weeks
for Tinnerman Canoe base (French River Provincial Park). Last year,
I did a week long backpacking trip in the Adirondaks which included a
couple of days of rock climbing. I don't backpack much in Ohio,
mainly because it's closer to get to PA from where I live so, I end
up in the Alleghenies most of the time.
Other interests of mine are flyfishing (goes great w/ backpacking)
and I have more than a passing interest in mushroom identification
(hence the yahoo name mush_pep) and serve as the chairman of the Ohio
Mushroom Society. (http://www.ohiomushroom.org/)

I look forward to participating in this group.

Best Regards,
Jerry Pepera

In the links section under "Gear Reviews" you will find a host of
gear review sites for backpacking, hiking, climbing, mountaineering,
paddling etc... where you can review and cross reference review old
and new gear, or in other terms do your research before you buy, if
anyone has a link to a good review site not listed which provides a
comprehensive review post it and it will be there, also I have found
some gear review forums to be of use, so if you know of strictly
informational gear review forums post it and let us know, we probably
can't add all of them, but the most informative and active links can
be placed.

Hello all,

Looks like we will be relocating to Kettering, OH. in the near
future. My wife has accepted a job offer at the hospital down there
we could not pass up. I will not be able to do any trips anytime soon
since we will be busy selling and searching for a home.

Thanks for keeping this group site active. It has been fun talking
and learning from you all.

posts and now you'll be on I-75 so more trips to TN /NC, but you will
be west of parmens so you guys will have a greater opportunity to
link up and go any direction.

Hi Everyone,

I'm Eddie Jenkins, aka paintertale. I live in Lawrence County near
Lake Vesivus. I started backpacking again a few months ago. My work
schedule is odd, so I get more time off during the week than on
weekends. I solo hike most of the time, but would love to have some
company.

Look forward to meeting some of you. By the way Keith, your new home
will be very close to the Buckeye Trail. Maybe we can start to hike
it in sections!

I had to buy several peices of new gear this year. Some of it I
don't need any more. Most of this stuff is new or nearly new. I had
to lighten my load, because I'm gettin old and can't carry all this
junk. Email me if you are in the market. There really is some good
gear that I just don't use. I won't list it here. Don't want anyone
to think I joined the group just to sell things.

I think it would be a good idea to create a folder in the files
section, call it "members gear classifieds. This could be a place where
members that have gear they want to sell new or used could get it
posted for other members to view. You would need to send it to me as an
attachment though, as yahoo groups doesn't accept atttachments. I could
then cut and paste to put it into the file section. If you have any you
want posted, send me a list of it with contact information, I'll turn
it into a text file, probably just by copy and paste and put it in the
folder, then all members could look at the gear that is out there
within our own site for sale, help each other out, and get some deals.

My girlfriend Amy and I are planning dayhiking a section of the
Buckeye Trail that travels through Wolf Run State Park in Noble

Reservoir and jogs north towards Noble County Airport. This is our
plans. Where do you plan on hiking? Southeast Ohio is an very nice

I would love to get out, I will but, I have a dr. appointment friday
afternoon, am packing for moving, working on completing financing for
a house and all the things that come with it etc..., my next trip
will probably be a backpacking trip of Spruce knob or dayhiking
Spruce Knob bottom to top, then doing a portion of North Fork Mtn
Trail the next day.

Jonathan's photos from Flatrock Plains reminded me of a tip I got from
some local hikers. They recommended taking Boar's Nest Trail to FS
Road 70 southwest to pipeline then follow pipeline southeast. You can
see where the valley drops off on the topo map. Said it was a great
view. Haven't had the opportunity to check it out yet myself. Ahh... I
need to get out.

ohbper did the very primitive, unofficial, unmarked canyon rim trail
and could give you some information on that area.

Subject: Katadyn Guide : Why I like this water filter
wildernessed...
Send Email Send Email

I used The PUR brand of water filters, the Hiker and the Scout before
they were bought by Katadyn. I still have a couple I bought probably
8 years ago. The Hiker kept it's name and i think it was the Scout
was renamed Guide. I think the Hiker is nice for dayhikes or short
overnighters where your not pumping alot, but the Guide has a rubber
bottom that catches on rocks and surfaces, a straight down centered
piston like t-type handle for a smooth, controlled, and stable hold
and pump, it pumps 1 liter/min. with about 12 strokes less than a
Hiker (that adds up to convenience when pumping alot), both have a
carbon core that helps with taste and absorbs / binds metals and
organic chemicals in the water, indestructable plastic composite
housing as well as the feature of being "simple in design", fewer
parts equal fewer variables, equals fewer things to break or
malfunction. Another advantage I think is that the paper filter if
frozen can be thawed and reused without fear of cracking, unlike
ceramic filters. The Guides weight is only 3 oz. more than the Hiker
and about half the weight of MSRs Miniworks, the filter is guaranteed
to work for a year before changing and performed well after pumping
800 liters in test, although results may vary depending upon your
water source, but the prefilter helps with larger particles. Another
reason I like The Guide, you can take a second filter replacement
cartridge if you need as backup on longer trips and your weight is
still lighter than MSR and most other filters stand alone units. Now
I have a Hiker and it's smaller, only 3 oz. lighter though so for
dayhikes and overnighters (?) it will do, the Guide to me outshines
the crowd with it's overall capability.

Tip (learned this through trial and error desperation) :

If the Katadyn Hiker or Guide will not pump you can try reducing the
pressure resistance from the clogged filter initially by...

1. Take off prefilter and try to pump

if NO

2. Decrease the lenght of the hose by cutting it and leaving the
prefilter off ( you may want to carry a 1-2' piece of hose in case)

if NO

3. Take off both the hose with prefilter, stick the intake end of the
filter housing into the water and pump, it works !

each step increasingly decreases the pumping resistance through the
system and increases the available pressure to suck water through a
partially clogged filter that won't pump normally. I found this out
while solo backpacking across The Black Elk Wilderness, SD in 100
degree heat, during a drought where the runs were predominantly dry
and I was desperate.

Hi everyone....I'm new to the ohiobp group, and I thought I'd introduce myself.  My name's Steve, and I live in NE Ohio (Akron, to be more specific), and have been hiking/backpacking since I was a kid.  I've recently began taking my son with me, and I hope to instill the same love for the natural world that my dad did for me.  This year, I've been to Minister Creek, Clear Creek State Forest, Raccoon Creek, and Oil Creek (a lot of creeks!) in PA, and to Hocking Hills in Ohio.  I try to do a least a couple of day hikes each week, mostly in Cuyahoga Valley NP, but unfortunately there aren't any backpack trails in NE Ohio that I'm aware of.  All of my "local" trips are in PA, but I'm hoping to get down to Southern Ohio for a long weekend sometime this summer, possibly to Shawnee or Vesuvius.  Take care everyone.
