Here we are, fretting that DCA is not producing a new generation of adventurous
skippers to match the exploits of our old-timers. Then I see a website that is
for self-built boats whose homepage features pics of two boats reefed to
handkerchiefs in wind that cannot be even a f3.
The site explains that, `because of the constraints tidal conditions put on a
coastal meet' they favour `an inland stretch of water' for their rallies.
Wait a minute, what tidal constraints? It's the tides that give us our beloved
creek crawling. It's the tides that assist our coastal passages. It's the tides
that give us the challenges of shallow water crossings.
The boats I see on their site are capable of so much. Yet they are asked so
little.

Me and you Andy, we will show them! We sailed yesterday on the broads in a good force 6 with bigger gusts on a 105 year old broads river cruiser. Infact when...
Not the Home Built Boat Rally then. I've been rather encouraged to see how many HBBR members have also joined the DCA (including me). Next HBBR trip is up the...
... Afraid it is. I quote from a page of their website, http://ukhbbr.wordpress.com/how-to-do-it/rally-organisation/: "Because of the constraints tidal...
Oliver, The HBBR is a collection of very talented and creative people. They have the practical skills and determination to make their own boat from plans and...
... I don't question that. Indeed I did try to point out that taking the "offending" passage out of context could be doing them a disservice. If you revisit my...
"I hope that this will NOT be seen as my taking a dig at the HBBR, but rather as having some empathy with them". "Saying" a group of people are spineless does...
... I didn't say it. I merely identified the source of the passage to which Ed had taken offence, and tried to put it in a slightly less unfavourable...

I think we at the HBBR need to revisit that page, although it is really saying no more than the aim is to meet and mess about in each other's boats, and chat...
Ed, As Chris says, there are a number of us with feet in both camps (DCA & HBBR), & indeed there are a number of us who offer encouragement & advice to people...
... Holy Island Rally welcomes novices and young families. I try to ensure the kids get attention and have a bit of fun. The novices have the opportunity of...
I've been looking again at the HBBR front page and, as usual, the photos do not tell the whole story. The middle shot was taken in the shelter of Barton...
That's great Ed. So why do you ridicule the HBBR for being 'spineless' rather than encouraging the HBBoaters on this list? If you read again your severe crop...
How about a team competition? Using only materials you can buy in B&Q (and some epoxy) you have to sail from Cobnor to East End, without the aid of the tide....
Could be a frugal night, and a long wait.. r 1st and 2nd bopat - 3rd boat buys a round for all who have arrived and so on. The handicap really bites when it is...
Or the winners starve to death waiting for the losers, who would be w completely without incentive to finish. How about a circular race - everyone contributes...
... Phil. DCA now has wider interests. But when I read our early history, it was of simple sailing adventures and not social gatherings. I promote that...
... Edward, Count me in - that's why I joined the DCA. I hope there will also be a round the IOW event sometime? It will all lead up to my big adventure of...
I really can't agree. The HBBR exists for boat builders to meet, exchange information and socialise which is a a very good and valid thing to do if home boat...
"DCA still has sailors taking on adventurous passages but they are not being replaced by young bucks." The reason for this may be staring at you in the mirror...

How saddend I am to read this thread. Thus far I am self taught and sail single handed, and concider myself a novice after only four years at the tiller. I...
Good for you. No need to apologise. In fact I might join in soon to share some practical knowledge. In the meantime, do any of your illustrious members know...
