Subject: [parentpartner] Clothing Allowances

Hi members, I hope that you are all well and in good health. I have a
question that maybe some of you could help me with. Lately, there has
been a lot of commotion in reference to the clothing allowances that
are, in some instances, alloted to clients who are attending various
employment-related programs and events.

There are rumors that this aspect has been done away with by The
Department of Welfare and that clients should be referred to the
Working Wardrobe in order to receive a voucher for thier clothing. But
isn't it true that Working Wardrobe operates mostly off of donations
and mainly provides business suits such as interview attire? And what
if you refer a client to the Working Wardrobe, but nothing can be found
for them in their size or taste? This would still leave the client
without what they need to participate in their assigned activity.

Does anyone know where I may be able to find a hard copy of these
changes, as well as the alternatives that should be used in instances
where referring a client to the Working Wardrobe may not help them to
attain the clothing that they may desperately need?

Repaying Student Loans Held by the U.S. Department of Education

http://www.ed.gov/offices/OSFAP/DCS/repaying.html

After you graduate, leave school, or drop below half-time enrollment,
you have six or nine months before you begin repayment. You will
receive information about repayment and will be notified by your loan
provider of the date loan repayment begins.

Addressing Your Defaulted Student Loan

If you default on your student loan, the maturity date of each
promissory note is accelerated making payment in full immediately due,
and you are no longer eligible for any type of deferment or
forbearance. Continued failure to repay a loan in default may lead to
several negative consequences for you over the long-term including
having your wages garnished, your Federal income tax withheld, and
losing your eligibility for other federal loans like FHA or VA.

However, there are now more ways than ever before to repay your
defaulted student loan and certain programs can even remove your loan
from its defaulted status. Determining which repayment option that is
right for you depends on what your objective is.

"I want to pay my defaulted student loan in monthly payments that are
affordable to me."

     * All guaranty agencies and the U.S. Department of Education
(Department) will accept regular monthly payments that are both
reasonable to the agency and affordable to you. You should call us at
1-800-621-3115 and one of our customer service representatives will
assist you with determining a repayment amount that is right for you.

"I want to reestablish my eligibility for additional federal student
aid and go back to school."

     * Please see Going Back to School for more information on this topic.

"I'm applying for a HUD (FHA) or VA loan and I don't qualify because
of my defaulted student loan."

     * Your options for reinstating your eligibility to receive a HUD
(FHA) or VA loan are: repay or satisfy the loan in full; consolidate
your loan through the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) loan
consolidation program or the William D. Ford Direct Loan Program
(Direct Loan Program); or rehabilitate your loan through our loan
rehabilitation program. Since defaulted student loans have no statute
of limitations for enforceability, you would remain ineligible to
receive a HUD or VA loan until you complete one of the options
mentioned above.

"My credit record is tarnished because of my defaulted student loan.
Is there anything that I can do to improve my credit record?"

Failure to repay your defaulted student loan can be damaging to your
credit record. In fact, consumer reporting agencies may continue to
report an account for 7 years from the opening date. However, there
are several things that you can do to at least partially, and in some
cases, fully restore your credit record. Your options for bettering
your credit report include: repay or satisfy the loan in full;
consolidate your loan through the FFEL loan consolidation program or
the William D. Ford Direct Loan Program; or rehabilitate your loan
through our loan rehabilitation program.

If you want the negative credit report made by the Department removed,
you must successfully complete our loan rehabilitation program.

"Can I pay my defaulted student loan held by the Department by credit
card?

Absolutely. We accept American Express, Discover, Master Card and Visa
as repayment options. To repay a loan by credit card, please call us
at 1-800-621-3115.

"What address do I send my payments to?"

If you have a defaulted student loan held by the U.S. Department of
Education, you can mail a check or money order to the address below.
If you are at all unsure about the status of your loan, or who
currently holds your loan, please call us first at 1-800-621-3115
before sending in payment. You may also use Loan Locator to help you
find out what lenders currently hold your loan(s).

     National Payment Center
     P.O. Box 4169
     Greenville, TX 75403-4169

instrument that you send us).

More good information regarding getting back on track

Facing Loan Default

For student loans authorized under Section 435(i)Title IV of the
Higher Education Act, default occurs on a Federal Family Educational
Loan (FFEL) program loan after a default has persisted for 270 days in
the case of a loan repayable in monthly installments or 330 days in
the case of a loan repayable in less frequent installments. The change
is effective for loans for which the first date of delinquency
occurred on or after October 7, 1998. During the delinquency period,
your loan holder must exercise "due diligence" in attempting to
collect the loan; that is, your loan holder must make repeated efforts
to locate and contact you about repayment. If your loan holder's
efforts are unsuccessful, steps will be taken to place the loan in
default and to turn the loan over to the guaranty agency in your
state. Your loan holder may "accelerate" a defaulted loan, which means
that the entire balance of the loan (principal and interest) becomes
due in a single payment.

Once your loan is assigned to a guaranty agency or the U.S. Department
of Education (Department) for collection, the following steps may be
taken to recover the outstanding balance due:

     * The Department of the Treasury may offset your federal and/or
state tax refunds and any other payments, as authorized by law, to
repay your defaulted loan.

     * You may have to pay additional collection costs after your loan
is assigned to a private collection agency for collection.

     * Also, you may be subject to Administrative Wage Garnishment,
whereby the Department will require your employer to forward 15% of
your disposable pay toward repayment of your loan.

     * Federal employees face the possibility of having 15% of their
disposable pay offset by the Department toward repayment of their loan
through the Federal Employee Salary Offset Program.

     * The Department may take legal action to force you to repay the loan.

     * Finally, credit bureaus may be notified, and your credit rating
will suffer.

Once a loan is declared in default, you are no longer entitled to any
deferments or forbearances. In addition, you may not receive any
additional Title IV federal student aid if you are in default on any
Title IV student loan until you have made payments of an approved
amount for at least six consecutive months. Please see Going Back to
School for more information on this topic.

To remove your loan from default, please visit the Repaying section of
our site for a complete list of repayment options to assist you.

As a result of parents joining this list a remarkable issues came to a
end on a positive note.

one of our parent partner yahoo support group list members, shared our
site with her troubled sister and Friday, all came to a head and was
resolved positively!

About a month ago a member approached me and shared a sad story about
what her family was experiencing.

She stated that they had been to every person and agency that they
could think of. The parent shared that her sister a single parent
while employed and managing well found out that she had a negative
report attached to her child abuse clearance history.

It was a result of a incident that she and her family had not paid
much attention too when it happened.

The sister, whom I will call Linda, had custody of a child that the
mother had abandoned 3 years before. She and her 2 children were
managing and she needed a friend to baby sit one day for a few hours.
Her son 4 years of age had a fall from his bycycle and was rushed to
the hospital.

The child was treated and released. The hospital staff reported child
abuse and the person of record was Linda, whom was not at home at the
time of the fall. She responded to the hospital and gave permission to
treat him and escorted her son home.

The family services removed the child that was in her care because of
her new record and that's when the odyssey began.

After joining our group Linda and her sister was directed to the State
Senator Shirley Kitchen offices and a number of other advocates and
the rest is history.

Linda reported to court about the issue and the judge heard here
plea. he granted her custody of the child and her record to be
expunged. Please for give inaccuracy the time line, but bottom line is
this list is valuable .

So members please let us know you are here and how you or your network
can help us all.

Post your events as well

much respect, much love

I have a sprint card for $40 bucks a month.

Also with services like http://skype.com/ calls are free after paying

anne hendersonThe Title I State Parent Advisory Council is pleased to invite you to participate in a special Webinar featuring Anne T. Henderson

“Beyond the Bake Sale:  A Conversation About Effective Parent Involvement in Schools”

Monday, September 8, 2008

3:45 – 5:15 p.m.

This webinar will feature Anne T. Henderson, Author of “Beyond the Bake Sale:  The Essential Guide to Family/School Partnerships” and one of the foremost authorities on Parent Involvement research and effectiveness in the country.  Anne will provide an uncomplicated, easy-to-understand, common sense overview of what research has proven about the effectiveness of parent involvement in helping to increase student achievement.  She will also discuss effective parent involvement ideas and strategies to help promote and expand parent involvement in your schools.  You will have the opportunity to listen, learn, and ask your toughest parent involvement questions of someone who will have answers and ideas to help your parent involvement efforts.

Target Audience:  Title I Coordinators, Parents, Teachers, Administrators, Community Liaisons, Parent Engagement Specialists

Cost:  No cost for Title I schools.

Registration:    The webinar system allows up to 250 computers to be logged in at the same time.  Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first served basis.   We strongly encourage multiple persons to view the webinar from the same computer or use a projector and meeting room to show the webinar to a group of teachers/parents.

To register, please email Daniella Care at dacare@... with a contact name, your school district and/or school name, the number of computers that will be accessing the webinar from your school(s) and the estimated number of participants viewing the webinar.   (Note that in the event that we exceed our capacity of 250 computers statewide requesting access, we may need to limit the number of computers per district that can access the webinar.)

Suggestions for Involving Parents in this Event :  SPAC recommends that you invite your Title I parents to view the webinar with your staff to help initiate a conversation of your own about parent involvement in your schools.

This webinar will be recorded and made available to all school districts and parents through the SPAC website at the conclusion of the event.  It is our hope that the recorded version will be downloaded and used by schools and districts for training of staff members and parents regarding parent involvement.

About Webinars:  “Webinars” are online seminars where participants view and interact through the internet in a virtual classroom setting.  Individuals or groups may participate from any computer with internet access.

Thanks Jonathan, but what does rapid testing mean??/ A lot of us live
around the area of the clinic, Silver street, Sterner, bailey street,
ringgold, Taylor, 2800 N. 27th st.

If im busy, can I stop in and get it done, quickly...what is the cost???

I have one student, mature woman that discussed testing with me. She
is scared to death to have it done. Although she is a recent mom, she
said she refused to consent while in the delivery process.

But it is a black cloud over her head, but stated that if she came up
positive she is afraid of what she might do, like take her own life...

I'm sure there are hundreds if not thousands of men and woman that
feel the same way.

She is a wonderful person that is moving ahead with a career change
preparation (training). She just begun, but that issues is a HUGE
barrier to long term positive success.

WHAT, help us understand this , what is the truth???

by KYW's Michelle Durham

Philadelphia School District officials are disputing the claims of a
national nonprofit group that is urging the school district to take
certain foods off school lunch menus.

In a television ad run by the Cancer Project (photo above), the
haunting voices of young children read a script describing adult life
with cancer:

(Boy:) "I was dumbfounded when the doctor told me I have late-stage
colon cancer.
(Girl #1:) "Deciding between surgery and radiation wasn't easy. Who
knows what sort of side-effects I'll have?"
(Girl #2:) "It's been really tough on my husband, my kids, and me.
Cancer affects the whole family."

Susan Levin is a registered dietician who works with the group. She
says the TV ads are trying to make a point:

"If you consume just an average of 50 grams of processed meat a day,
and that is the size of an average hot dog, it increases your chances
of cancer 21 percent."

So, Levin and the Cancer Project want items like this off school menus.

School District spokesman Vince Thompson says safety is their primary
concern, and they think they're being safe:

"The foods that this group would like school districts all over the
country to get rid of, we will not get rid of. A lot of the food we
get in Philadelphia comes from the Federal Food Program, and we trust
that they do their job and make sure that everything is healthy for
children."

Step Up for Kids Action Day

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

11:00 a.m.

The Pennsylvania Capitol Building

Main Rotunda

Harrisburg

At PPC, we work hard to make children a priority in public policy
debates in Harrisburg and Washington. This year, we have a great
opportunity to urge all candidates running for office to step up for
our kids. This non-partisan event is part of a nationwide effort to
draw public attention to issues affecting America's children, and to
support investments in programs that impact their health, education
and well-being.

In addition to the Presidential race, all members of the U.S. Congress
and PA House and half the members of the PA Senate are up for
election. Step up in raising public attention here in Pennsylvania
and across the country.

Please join us on September 16!

There are several things I could tell you to say or do to the child's
father, but on a serious note, time will heal all wounds. She is
young, she will bounce back quicker than you think. I went through
something similar with my son, time and trust will work for you. What
do I mean by that? When you tell your daughter you will be back
after you return tell her "you see mommy came back" and in time she
will start to trust your word. But remember time is important it
won't happen overnight, however it will happen. Continue to love her
and assure her that everything is alright.

This great post arrived in my mailbox, thanks natasha

Every week , our offices have parents and community people as for
groups and organizations to join. Most or many of the requests are in
regards to their selves or their children.

One parent sat down with me to discuss her situation regarding, career
choices, trainings, child guidance and volunteer situations where she
can get her son ( 14 years of age ) positive male interaction.

He had recently attended Pop Warner football team practices, with the
Oak Lane Wildcats.

Her son's dad had recently pasted away and the son had been in a minor
legal situation that has her moving quickly to break a possible
negative cycle.

She lives in Logan on the east side of Broad street. I shared the EPIC
coordinators contact information of LOgan/Olney. Also she had nots in
a journal where she has dreams and desires to join and organize youth
activities, she is in the shadow of Ms. Georgette King Creative Kids
Club headquarters. Mrs King call our offices for follow up information.

Like many parents that are transistioning from one line of support to
self suffiency, barriers are looming big like this one. The youth
league has a $125 membership fee, that is a strectch for her budget.
Like all of our parents rather than beg, borrow or steal, many do without.

----------------------------------------------------------------

There is another parent that has a tough time getting her birth
certificate and thus no social security number for child abuse and
criminal background check. She is a gracious southern transplant.
Having lived in the Philadelphia area all of her life, it is IMPORTANT
for her to get her identification straight.

She shared with me the fact that she was brought to Philadelphia,
hours after her mother delivered her at home in a small town near
Sumter south Carolina. She has survived raising a family and since
911, she is under a ton of pressure to get this straightened out.

We need your help, any ideas, contacts direction appreciated!

Years ago, when an individual took a conventional HIV test, they would have to wait 7-10 days for their results. With technological advances in science and medicine, an individual can receive their result within 20 minutes.

You are more than welcome to walk in for a rapid test or you can make an appointment. Prior to receiving any HIV test, an individual will have to sign a consent form. After signing the consent form, you will receive counseling. After the counseling and information session, the test is administered by the provider/counselor. An oral specimen will be obtained from the patient with a swab. The patients waits 20 minutes for his/her result. The patient is informed about his/her result and what it means and given tools to prevent infection.

For information FREE testing, contact Jonathan Chriswell at 215.227.0300 ext 327 or Khalil Evans at ext 321.

Subject: Grants for Families Struggling with Child Health-Related Expenses

Please distribute. Thanks

Children who have medical needs are sometimes not insured comprehensively to provide coverage for all of their medical treatments.

The United Healthcare Children's Foundation (UHCCF) provides grants to families to help pay for child health care services such as speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy sessions, prescriptions, and medical equipment such as wheelchairs, orthotics, and eyeglasses. Parents and legal guardians may apply for grants of up to $5,000 each for child medical services and equipment by completing an online application at the UHCCF Web site. If a grant is approved for the child, the grant will help pay for approved medical services/items after the child’s commercial health benefit plan submits payment for services provided, if any. The grant funds are not paid to the parent or child directly – invoices/bills are  submitted to UHCCF for approved medical services/items after the commercial health benefit plan submits initial payment (if any) to the health care provider.

In January 2006, the United Healthcare Children's Foundation was expanded to all 50 states; hence, funds are available nationwide. To be eligible for a grant, children must be 16 years of age or younger.
Deadline: Open.
