Subject: Winter Coats for children

Good morning everyone. Please read this message. It could save you, or
someone you know, hundreds of dollars.

Fathers Are In The House (FAITH) has partnered with  Cradles To Crayons
to provide children ages 0-12 with books, clothes, art supplies and
toys.. We can now have access to their inventory and are urging everyone
to take full advantage of this opportunity.

All products are high-quality used or new goods. For a registration fee
of $20, you will have access to their entire inventory for 6 months.

Cradles has informed me that they are now accepting orders for their
winter coat drive. All coats are brand new. If you have a child or know
someone with children ages 0-12, then this will be a great benefit to
them. Please do not delay. Cradles To Crayons will be receiving 5000
coats, but they service over 10,000 children. So get your orders in
quickly.

Please pass this message along to your friends and family. We want to
help as many children and families as possible. Attached you will find
the order form and flyer.

Thanks

CLASP - Policy Solutions that Work for Low-Income People

Tracking American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Funds

CLASP is tracking how much each state has drawn down in Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) funds made available through the recovery act. The measure provided $2 billion in CCDBG funds, which states can access through Sept. 30, 2010.  As of Sept. 18, 2009, states, territories, and tribes had drawn down $183.6 million, or 9 percent of available funds. Visit http://www.clasp.org/admin/site/documents/files/ARRA-tracking.pdf to view total and state-by-state outlays.  CLASP will regularly update this table.

Earning and Learning:  Options under the Workforce Investment Act

Adults with limited work experience, low education and skill levels and other barriers to employment face the greatest challenges, especially at a time of rising unemployment. Strategies that combine work and learning are critical to help these individuals to enter or regain employment. Earning and Learning: Options under the Workforce Investment Act focuses on two program strategies that combine work and learning: on-the-job training and paid work experience combined with skill development.

Recommendations for Addressing Poverty in Tough Economic Times

The recession has meant less revenue for states at just the time when even more resources are needed to help families and individuals. While there is no simple solution for addressing poverty during a recession, there are some low-cost policy changes (including options made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) states can make to help those who are struggling most.

CLASP DataFinder Updated with American Community Survey Data

This week, CLASP updated its DataFinder to include 2008 Census American Community Survey poverty data. The DataFinder is a custom, easy-to-use tool developed to provide select demographic information as well as administrative data on programs that affect low-income people and families.

Subject: Breaking: Jobless rate hits 9.8%, event TODAY in Philadelphia

Unemployment just hit 9.8%. Come join our symbolic unemployment line in front of Sen. Arlen Specter's office in Philadelphia. With record jobless rates, we can't afford to wait any longer for President Obama's clean energy jobs plan, which would create 1.7 million jobs.

Can you make it?

RSVP for your local event

Dear MoveOn member,

The federal government announced just a few minutes ago that the unemployment rate has hit 9.8% for only the second time since the Great Depression.1

The jobs situation is a crisis. So we're organizing a symbolic unemployment line TODAY in front of Sen. Specter's office in Philadelphia to call for passage of President Obama's clean energy jobs plan and the 1.7 million new jobs it would create.

To send a strong message to the Senate and the media, we need lots of people there. Here are the details:

Host: Jim B—fellow MoveOn member
Where: Sen. Arlen Specter's District Office (in Philadelphia)
When: Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at 12:00 PM

Can you make it?

Yes! I'll be there.

Sorry, I can't make it.

Despite the jobs crisis, the Senate has been stalling for months on President Obama's clean energy jobs plan. Senators John Kerry and Barbara Boxer introduced strong legislation on Wednesday, but Big Oil and Coal will fight it every step of the way.

President Obama's plan would spark a whole new industry here in the U.S., creating 1.7 million good jobs that can never be outsourced.2 Instead of spending our money on oil from the Middle East, we could be investing in putting Americans to work here at home.

With the rise in unemployment in the news, we have a chance to really push Congress to act. If enough people show up, we can really show Sen. Specter that people in the Philadelphia area want action to create good jobs.

Hope to see you there.

Thanks for all you do.

Good morning LPI associates:

I am the Parent Ombudsman at Hopkinson Elementary; currently our school is in need of community resources. Our school is scheduled to have their first 4k run on December 17, 2009. As a result, we would need to find a location that has an indoor track. If anyone knows of a university or community center that is equipped with an indoor track, please forward his or her contact information.

Sincerely,

"There’s a great event coming to the city, and I hope you can experience it.  There’s going to be a special preview/reception of the Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of Cool career retrospective of renowned painter and alumnus of the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, Barkley L. Hendricks, a north Philadelphia native, and current tenured professor of art at Yale University.  Hendricks is best known for his stunning, life-sized portraits of African Americans from the urban northeast and it is through these images that he explores the cultural complexity of contemporary African American identify. This is a great opportunity for all parts of our community to experience “quality” art and it’s one of the first times urban black folks can see themselves artistically portrayed with beauty, dignity and grace, while at the same time authentically capturing a particular culture."

New York State Strengthening Families Through Stronger Fathers Request For Proposals

 http://www.dads.ny.gov/main/cgo/2009/SFTSF/

The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Strengthening Families Through Stronger Fathers program. It has been more than 10 years since the implementation of welfare reform, and its success in decreasing the reliance of single mothers on cash benefits by getting them to work is well documented. However many of these mothers remain poor and are not getting help from the fathers of their children. While the child support system has been extremely effective at finding fathers and collecting the money they owe, many of these fathers are in poverty themselves, and have nothing to give. Inability to pay child support often creates barriers to both employment and engagement with children, and we know that children who grow up with disengaged fathers are, statistically, far less likely to accomplish the goals that lead them out of poverty and into stable, productive lives.

In an effort to help unemployed and underemployed noncustodial parents increase their financial and emotional involvement with their children, OTDA is seeking programs to provide case management and employment services coupled with other supportive services. A total of $2,764,000 in federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds is available to support selected Strengthening Families Through Stronger Fathers projects for a one-year period. By identifying and addressing the needs of noncustodial fathers, such as employment, job readiness, job placement, arrears management, community reintegration services and parenting education, we can begin to equip fathers to overcome the barriers that prevent them from being involved in the lives of their children.

Questions Concerning this Request for Proposals (RFP)
Bidders may submit typed questions via electronic mail, facsimile, or by mail to the address provided below. Questions regarding the RFP will be accepted until 4:00 p.m. October 16, 2009. No telephone inquiries will be accepted. Answers to all questions received by this date will be posted on the New York State Office of Temporary & Disability Assistance website at www.otda.state.ny.us no later than October 30, 2009. Prospective bidders may obtain a hard copy of the questions and answers upon request. Responses to questions raised after October 16, 2009 will be posted at the discretion of OTDA.

Characteristics of Effective Summer Learning Programs for Low-Income Youth

Effective summer programs can reduce summer learning loss among low-income youth, a leading cause of the achievement gap between low-income and more affluent students.  A new Child Trends review of the limited number of summer learning programs that have been rigorously evaluated suggests that these programs are likely to have positive impacts when they engage students in activities that are hands-on, enjoyable, and have real-world applications.

The review, summarized in a fact sheet entitled What Works for Summer Learning Programs for Low-Income Children and Youth, also finds that effective programs are:
  • guided by grade-level curricular standards;
  • led by experienced teachers;
  • conduct classes with 15 or fewer students and at least two teachers; and
  • complement group learning with individual support.

The fact sheet includes a table that shows whether the evaluated programs were found to work, not proven to work, or had mixed findings for educational/cognitive, youth development, and career-development outcomes.

The fact sheet is based on a Child Trends white paper commissioned by The Wallace Foundation entitled Effective and Promising Summer Learning Programs and Approaches for Economically-Disadvantaged Children and Youth.

Good Morning,

In January I reported there would not be any half days.  Well, according to PFT, you cannot force teachers to go for training after their working hours.   Below are the half days and school closings for October 2009.

Wedneday, October 7, 2009.............Half Day - Professional Development
Monday, October 12, 2009...............SCHOOL CLOSED - Columbus Day
Wednesday, October 21, 2009.........Half Day - Professional Development

Please plan accordingly.  These dates are in the School Calendar.  If you did not get one, you can pick one up at the Parent Resource Center at the District (440 N. Broad), or, ask your school to order one for you.

Thanks!

It has been bought to my attention that below email does not reflect the intention  or mission of Cradles to Crayons.  According to a letter that was forwarded me, there is NO REGISTRATION FEE for the Clothes.  The organization, Fathers In the House (FAITH) apparently was charging a fee for registration without the knowledge of permission or  Cradles to Crayons.

A letter from the Executive Director, Kelly A. Clarke states:

It has been brought to our attention that  an unfortunate incident occurred recently in which a distribution partner inadverently  sold                 Cradles to crayons orders  in order to raise funds for programming. As you all know our mission is to provide the very basic                         essentials to children in need in the Philadelphia 5 county region FREE OF CHARGE.

The letter goes to say that if you observe anyone selling the FREE ITEMS to NOTIFY CRADLES TO CRAYONS.  WWW.CRADLESTOCRAYONS.ORG.

Thanks

The Alliance to Prevent Restraint, Aversive Interventions and Seclusion (APRAIS), a coalition of 17 national disability advocacy organizations, is conducting this survey of parents and guardians.  The purpose of the survey is to establish the extent to which restraint, seclusion and aversive procedures have been used with students with disabilities and special needs (whether served under IDEA or under section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act) in public or private schools or in residential facilities. The survey takes approximately 5-10 minutes to complete and all responses must be entered by October 12th, 2009.  To participate in the survey, go to:

Good Morning,
The School District of Philadelphia will have Interim Reports around October 20, 2009. This let's parents/caregivers know the progress of a student BEFORE report card dates.
As parents/caregivers of children with special needs, please use this time as a mini-IEP meeting to see if your child is making progress. If the interventions/supports and services being used have not caused your child to make progress, use this time to make changes.
High School 1st Report: 11/23 & 11/24
