$7,000/yr. Stipends for Older Adults to be Part-Time Volunteer Managers

Dear Friends,

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Encore Volunteer Managers program being offered by Temple University, along with its Coming of Age partners, United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, WHYY, and AARP PA -- and the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning.

There was an enthusiastic response to our recent call for nonprofits to apply -- and 15 very qualified organizations (who will be notified shortly) have been chosen to receive a part-time, stipended Encore Volunteer Manager funded through the generosity of the Barra Foundation, with additional support from the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Encore Volunteer Managers will receive a stipend of $7,000 for one year for 15 to 20 hours of service per week.

Each manager will lead a corps of volunteers of all ages within a nonprofit whose mission focuses on basic needs, refugees and immigrants, and/or older adult services. The work of the Encore Volunteer Manager will enhance the organization's ability to use the power of volunteers to build capacity and strengthen services.
Primary Responsibilities of the Encore Volunteer Manager:
• Implement goals and objectives for the volunteer program that reflect the mission of the organization.
• Establish and maintain positive working relationships with volunteers, staff, and administrators at the participating nonprofit.
• Promote the role of volunteers to gain organizational and community support.
• Ensure that volunteers are given appropriate training and that their roles are meaningful, respected, and engaging.
You will find the application to participate by clicking here. To be considered, applications must be submitted online by Friday, April 30, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.

If you have any questions, please e-mail Janis Glenn at
jglenn@... or call her at (215) 204-6718. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Dick Goldberg, Director, Coming of Age

Hi folks,

This Thursday, April 29, the Coalition for Essential Services (“CES”), backed by Neighborhood Networks, will unveil its program to simultaneously do two things:

1)   make the City’s tax code fairer and more progressive, and

2)   raise enough money to prevent further cutbacks in City services.

The program will be formally unveiled at a rally and press conference at 9 AM right outside Council chambers and just before their regular Thursday meeting. They will be listening, especially if enough of us are there.

For more information on the CES proposal and further rally details, go to the Neighborhood Networks website here.

For even more details of the CES proposal, go to our website here.

And to check out the rally/press conference Facebook page, go
here.

We could be turning a page on Thursday, when we finally get the issue of progressive taxes on the front burner in Philly, while preserving libraries and other essential services.  Please join us.

Are we looking outside this morning and thinking ...

"Sure, the sun is shining, but b-r-r-r-r  it's still very chilly out there."

If that's so... take a look at the little fellow below and see

if the morning weather still means anything.

Here is a little guy who will go far in life and with a huge smile on his face.   Hats off to his parents for showing him that he can do everything in life he wants to.

Your attitude towards life defines who you are..

Whatever is bugging you, doesn't seem so big anymore, does it?
Puts life into perspective in a real big hurry!!!
 What a guy!

Cornell University Summer College Programs for High School Students

Do you know high school students who might benefit from college-level
summer study at Cornell? If so, I hope you will tell them about Cornell
University Summer College Programs for High School Students
(www.summercollege. cornell.edu <http://www.summercollege.cornell.edu/>).

Cornell's Summer College, now in its forty-ninth year, is one of the
nation's longest running and most highly regarded precollege academic
programs. It brings more than 800 academically talented high school
sophomores, juniors, and seniors from around the world to Cornell each
summer for three- and six-week programs.

Summer College students have the unparalleled opportunity to:

*experience what it's like to live and learn at a great Ivy League
university,
*take real university courses,
*work closely with Cornell's world-renowned faculty,
*learn three to six college credits,
*explore majors and career options,
*get a jump on successful college applications,
*make friends from around the world-and much, much more.

As a Cornell alum, you also might be interested to know that in addition
to the gains realized by students, Summer College contributes
significantly to Cornell's recruitment efforts by introducing a
geographically, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse group of
talented students to Cornell at the crucial time. Many former Summer
Collegians apply to Cornell, and each year a significant number are
members of the entering class.

Again, we would be grateful if you would share this information with
individuals or organizations you think could benefit from our
award-winning Cornell program. This year's application deadline for most
programs is April, 30. Students can connect with other Summer College
fans through the Facebook link on our homepage
<http://www.summercollege.cornell.edu/> and can reach us directly at
summer_college@ cornell.edu or 607.255.6203

City Council has just one month to hammer out its version of the $3.9 billion budget. The decisions that Council and the mayor will make in the days ahead will determine the kind of city we live and work in far into the future.

The Committee of Seventy is starting a special series of our “IN THE KNOW” feature to help Philadelphians understand the issues, the politics, and the consequences of this year’s budget process, the third year in a row with the city facing a major budget deficit. We’ll look behind the seemingly dry facts and figures of the budget to help those that live and work in the city understand how and why their tax money is being spent.

We hope with this series to motivate people and to make voters realize that they have a voice in the process. This is important to us, The Committee of Seventy, because we are working to build public interest in making Philadelphia government more efficient, effective, transparent, and accountable.

Our opening edition, a look at the budget process, is available at:

We will release more editions as the process develops and new issues arise. Please feel free to e-mail your comments, or requests for Q&As on other topics you care about, to info@.... We look forward to hearing from you.

  • A representative still to be named by Robert Eskind from the Philadelphia Prison System from the county jail CFCF
  • Philippe Bourgois Professor of Anthropology and Community Medicine and author of Righteous Dopefiend.

I am attaching the flyer for the event for you to forward to other colleagues, listservs, friends etc.

The audiences at the two previous round tables were very engaged and came from diverse community-based as well as academic backgrounds.  They asked interesting questions and stayed until the end.  (A significant number were recovered homeless drug users, as well as Philadelphia-based service providers, and University of Pennsylvania students and professors.)

Subject: Screening of New Documentary on Mental Wellness in the Black Community - May 3rd
willjuz
Send Email Send Email

MEE Productions Inc. has recently conducted extraordinary focus group research
to find out what helps low-income, inner city young people thrive -- rather than
merely survive. In spite of what these youth are subjected to, identifying the
resilience and strength-based behaviors to manage life's stressors and handle
traumatic or violent events can help the broader community and mental health
professionals equip young people with the psychological tools they need to meet
today's challenges.

Now a new MEE documentary, Moving Beyond Survival Mode, explores how living in
low-income, underserved communities puts individuals at risk for stress, ongoing
trauma, depression and even mental health problems. This video showcases the
voices of Americans who too often fall through the cracks. Young Black Americans
-- who feel beaten down by the struggle to survive poverty, broken homes, child
abuse, violent communities, poor schools, institutional racism, police
harassment and other social ills -- share their stories and their emotional
"injuries."

The 45-minute documentary focuses on the stresses and challenges African
American families living in poor and at-risk communities face daily, along with
the huge and growing need for stronger mental wellness support systems. Young
women and men who live in Philadelphia, Washington DC, Chicago and the Oakland
area tell the story of what it's like living in survival mode, when their
neighborhoods are overrun by violence, poverty and drugs.

Moving Beyond Survival Mode searches for insights that help identify the causes
for generational cycles of family dysfunction, feelings of abandonment and anger
at an oppressive "system" that lead people to behaviors that have negative
consequences -- at both the individual and community level. The documentary also
explores the barriers poor families face while trying to navigate the current
mental healthcare system.

LOGAN CDC

A Community Development Corporation

Support Logan CDC!
April 30, 2010
Dear Bob,

On January 26, I was proud to help cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the Carlton Simmons Community Technology Center. As I stood alongside our supportive local officials and community partners, I began to reflect on the long journey to this moment when we could finally present Logan with a much-needed resource. What was once an unoccupied rowhome has been renovated to a community space with ten PCs, printers, wireless access, and a small library. Standing on the porch of the renovated house, I looked out over the Logan Triangle, a 37 acre tract of vacant land left in neglect since the razing of the infamous sinking homes, with a renewed sense of hope in its potential.

The new center provides key technology access for Logan residents, young and old, by supplementing existing school, library, and community computer resources. We are also hosting workshops to help Logan residents develop their ability to access online information efficiently and use the Internet safely and securely. We also hope the Logan community will use the center as a meeting space and resource for community-driven initiatives.

We could not have achieved this alone. The successful launch of the technology center is a testament to our many partners, including Pepsi Bottling Group; Rebuilding Together Philadelphia; our federal, state, and city elected officials; and other generous contributors. We are proud to lead collaborative efforts to help rejuvenate and revitalize the Logan community through transformative economic development. And we would like you to join us, too.

Logan CDC/NAC sign

Since July 2008, we have worked hard to identify and implement a community-driven vision to build a vibrant area supported by great resources. In addition to the technology center, our accomplishments include:

Logan Neighborhood Advisory Committee (NAC)

The Logan NAC provides vital information about available services and assistance to the community through newsletters and quarterly meetings. Past meetings have included presentations by PECO Energy, Philly311, Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee, Philadelphia Department of Public Health, Philadelphia Department of Streets, Philadelphia Water Department, and The Tenants Union Right Network (TURN). Our NAC also provided intervention to nearly 200 households through the Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Program, and partnered with various Logan community organizations to host events including the Building Bridges Community Health Festival and the Food for Firearms Anti-Violence Day. The Logan NAC also conducted a vacant lot survey to better aid NAC volunteers with lot maintenance, partnered with the Fairmount Park Commission and OARC to plant over 50 trees, and hosted 150 residents for Logan Family Day at the Philadelphia Zoo.

Business Corridor Revitalization
Logan CDC's efforts to rejuvenate the Broad Street commercial corridor were supported by the award of two in-kind service grants, worth over $60,000, from the Community Design Collaborative. The grants produced a conceptual streetscape design plan for North Broad Street and will offer design services for six businesses in the Logan business district. Logan CDC also launched the North Broad Street Improvement Project, a comprehensive revitalization plan driven by volunteers from the Logan community. We held town hall meetings to inform and engage the community concerning proposed Logan business district initiatives, and offered guidance on funding resources to over 50 small business owners. As part of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, Logan CDC hosted a successful corridor clean-up project for the 4800-5000 blocks of North Broad Street and next month, Logan CDC will hire a part-time sanitation specialist to maintain the North Broad Street and Old York Road corridors.

Resident Outreach

In our first year as a Benefit Bank site, Logan CDC helped residents apply for and receive over $18,000 in federal and state benefits and rebates, including federal tax refunds, Pennsylvania rent and property rebates, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (formerly known as Food Stamps).

Won't you join us to help accelerate the renaissance of Logan? A gift of any size will help Logan CDC maintain and expand its capacity to complete much needed planning and execution of targeted projects that will benefit the residents and businesses of this vibrant multicultural community. Your gift of $100, $75, $50, or even $25 can make a tremendous impact on one of Philadelphia's emerging neighborhoods. Please click here to make your tax deductible donation or you may mail a check payable to Logan CDC/GPUAC to:

Altering the Empowerment Act:
Necessary reform or state takeover?

The Senate Education Committee recently approved  the reauthorization of a significantly altered Education Empowerment Act (SB 1192).

The changes in the law would dramatically increase state control over low-performing local schools and school districts, imposing state control over hundreds of individual schools and dozens of school districts.

Is this a necessary reform or an aggressive state takeover?

Federal court judge orders district to re-enroll homeless student

With the help of the Education Law Center, a homeless student, who had been illegally kept out of school for more than five months, returned to school following a court order.

Judge Sylvia Rambo wrote that while keeping any student out of school for five months is troubling, "it is even more troubling because L.R. is a student with a disability."

New Report: State must improve alternative education

Pennsylvania's alternative education schools serve more than 30,000 students. If those schools were assembled as a single school district, it would be the third largest school district in Pennsylvania. Yet there is little information available on how these programs are run, who is teaching these students, and what these student are learning.

A new Education Law Center report addresses this crisis and offers legal and policy solutions to improve alternative education in Pennsylvania. Read the
Executive Summary and the full report.

The report was made possible with help of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

School District of Philadelphia high school hosts technology pioneer Bill Gates

The staff, students and sponsors of The School District of Philadelphia's Science Leadership Academy (SLA) yesterday welcomed a visitor who is a technology pioneer of international status—Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

Mr. Gates was in town to accept The Franklin Institute's prestigious Bower Award for Business Leadership as one of eleven preeminent trailblazers in science, technology and business recognized at the Institute's festive dinner and awards program last night.

As a founding partner of Science Leadership Academy, The Franklin Institute facilitated Mr. Gates' visit to the school. There, he visited science labs, commending the students and staff for doing "hand-on science," and later addressed the student body, urging the students to take full advantage of their education as a means of personal growth.

We thank The Franklin Institute for bringing the SLA "family" and Mr. Gates together. The students can take inspiration from his personal story as an individual whose innovative concepts were made real through focus, determination, talent, and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Mr. Gates and his family also have a significant presence in the world of philanthropy through the generosity of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Look for details on how the foundation's education-related initiatives are touching the lives of some Philadelphia students in an upcoming "News Note."

Respectfully,
Arlene C. Ackerman, Ed.D.
