The February meeting will have another great guest speaker. He's Matt Schuld. Matt works for the Florida Dept of Marine and Ecological Sciences as the Outreach Coordinator for the southwest region of the state. More specifically, he works for the Florida Public Archaeology Network. Matt's address will be: Water as a Way of Life in Southwest Florida: From Paleo-Indians to the Mackle Brothers. Florida residents have been drawing on the state's abundant water resources for at least 12,000 years. The rivers, bays, lakes, and coastlines have provided food, transportation, and a variety of other resources for Florida residents. Water as a Way of Life will address the many ways in which people have used and altered Florida's water resources over the last 12,000 years. Matt will also provide a general overview of what archaeology is and discuss how recreational kayakers can become stewards of some of Southwest Florida's most important archaeological resources. He even plans to come to BBG with us, afterward. Don't miss it!!

MEETINGS are the second Tuesday of the month @ the NORTH GOVERNMENT CENTER 2335 Orange Blossom Dr(@ AIRPORT RD. & ORANGE BLOSSOM. WEST OF THE MAIN LIBRARY) The after-MEETING-MEETINGS are held @ The Boston Beer Garden 2396 Immokalee Road in North Naples, (SW corner of Immokalee Rd and Airport) The restaurant has a full menu & a full bar.

Hi Jay,

Two questions for you....
1. Can Boy Scouts attend if they want to? I know a few in a local troop, and I think this may apply to a few merit badges
2.Is this a free event? And can I do a pre story, if you are up for it?

Sincerely,
LP

Hi Everyone,
Last week Oscar Rattenborg hosted a trip down the Caloosahatchee River from Lake Okeechobee to Fort Myers. He and I were the only attendees but we met many RV campers along the way and we had a good time! Thanks Oscar!
Wednesday evening Oscar drove us to
Okeechobee Waterway RV Camp in Moore Haven. They charge $10.90 per night per tent, and were really nice hosts. We met RV campers Betty and James (from Deland, FL) and Hugo and Joy (from Illinois). They invited us to share their fire which felt pretty good as temps dipped near 40 degrees.
Thursday morn we launched and locked through the Moore Haven Locks along with some Manatees probably heading for warmer waters. It was as though they knew the drill and patiently waited at the surface for the locks to open! Each morning we had fog which gave a surreal appearance to the landscape. We paddled down the man altered river (canal) to Ortona Locks, a nice campground as far as RV camps go Oscar treated me to this site which I believe was about $25 but allowed our 2 tents. Thanks Oscar! Once again the other campers were friendly and were impressed with Oscars wooden 'yak.
Friday we locked through Ortona and headed towards the Methodist Retreat Campground. Well, even good plans get glitches, There was "no room at the Inn"! We couldn't camp there. But every cloud has a silver lining. There was a group from Miami that invited us to join them for a hot dinner of chicken marsala, mashed potatoes, gravy, salad, bread......Yum! Without going into details we decided on an "alternative" camp it being dark and we being tired. It was on a slant going to the river and I was wondering if we would end up in the "drink". We survived a cool wet night (heavy dew) but the stars were FANTASTIC!
Saturday morning we took off early heading for our Island campsite. We stopped at the Alva boat ramp and cooked some breakfast, then continued on. this was the short leg of our trip (only 8 miles). This was one of my favorite sections between Alva and LaBelle, had some nice oxbows. We got to camp early and it felt good relaxing a bit. Oscar made some Bean Soup and I contributed some ham. Thanks Oscar!
Sunday we had our longest leg, to Fort Myers (about 18 miles). Going through the Franklin Locks we learned they only operate on the odd hour and timed accordingly. With about 8 miles to Fort Myers my right shoulder began to burn, and get gimpy(should have been paddling more prior to trip). I didn't want to hold Oscar back and asked him to go ahead, I wanted to make it to Fort Myers like we planned and if my shoulder got worse I knew various takeouts I could abort to if needed. Coming past Beautiful Island I got my first Manatee Bounce House ride! Paddling over and spooking 2 Manatees they lifted me what seemed to be a couple of feet out of the water (probably an exaggeration). After I checked my pants and wiped the grin off my face I continued on past the high rises of Fort Myers, under the Edison Bridge to North Shore Park. Per our plan, Oscar had continued on to his house, got my truck and picked me up. Thanks Oscar! We then headed back to Moore Haven for Oscar's car. I paddled 58 miles and Oscar about 62 miles.
All in all I feel we had a good trip! Thanks Oscar!
Things I learned: 1. The Caloosahatchee, east of Franklin Locks, has very little flow and west of locks we caught the incoming tide (most of the trip we went backwards when not paddling). 2. Going down river with no flow and a headwind, was a little harder than I anticipated. 3. I could imagine what a beautiful river it was......and sections still are!
Thanks Oscar!

Oscar, correct me if I goofed something up. I'll try getting some pics posted soon.

Jay - sounds like something I could bring back to the northwoods group - would possibly be interested.  I'm still up in the north - back next weekend.  Kath

Saturday Paddle,

Be in the water ready to paddle by 9am -  Lauch under the Marco side of the Goodland Bridge to turtle Key, take inside route between shell key and tripod key to the “Coon Key Loop of the Paradise Blueway”   Then take the Coon Key Loop of the Paradise Blueway back to the launch under the Goodland Bridge.  – then we eat!

The tidal patterns that day look interesting – almost flat during that time period – but I am a novice in reviewing and evaluating tidal conditions so please check this for yourself – any input appreciated.

I roughly estimate the mileage to 12 – 15 miles.

This is for reasonably experienced paddlers.

PS – I have not paddled that route and am amenable to modifying the route upon review of paddlers more familiar what that venue.

Florida residents have been drawing on the state’s abundant water resources for at least 12,000 years. The rivers, bays, lakes, and coastlines have provided food, transportation, and a variety of other resources for Florida residents. Water as a Way of Life will address the many ways in which people have used and altered Florida’s water resources over the last 12,000 years. Matt will also provide a general overview of what archaeology is and discuss how recreational kayakers can become stewards of some of Southwest Florida’s most important archaeological resources. He even plans to come to BBG with us, afterward. Don't miss it!!

Hello,

We signed in a few weeks ago, but were not able to meet any of you yet.

We live in Palm Beach county and are interested in the "Leave No Trace" signs. Would it be possible for us to get some to post around this area?

Hoping to meeting you soon,

We were not able to attend the Leave No Trace meeting. We are planning to go to
SC & NC in about 6 weeks and would like some information on this program to
present to the paddling clubs we belong to up there. I plan to attend the
upcoming Kerplunk Day next Sunday. Could I pick up some information and possibly
a couple signs to take with me? Thanks, Jack
