OK, Fr. Johnny, here it comes! (The box
is sealed and sitting at my feet. It will
be in the mail before noon today.)

You know, when I first got into this "box
pass" thing, I thought, "What a deal!" For
the cost of shipping it once and putting in
some samples of the tobacco I have on hand,
I'll get to try all these great tobaccos
that I've never had the chance to buy. Can't
get any better than that, huh? Great
entertainment for low cost, right?

Duh.

I was correct on the entertainment part.
I've had a lot of fun sampling the blends
in this box. But there's a fly in the
ointment: I fell in love with three of
the blends. (Which means that I'll have
to spend the money bulking up on a supply
of each one.) Which leads to yet another
problem.

I don't know who put in the tin of Dunhill's
Durbar, and I don't know whether to bless you
or curse you! I've been wanting to try this
for a long time, and now that it's out of
production, I just couldn't resist. WOW!
For an oriental lover like myself, this is
really, really great stuff. Awesome. The
best that I can describe it would be this
concept (note that I have NOT actually tried
this out): Take about half a tin of Old
Ironsides and mix it with a full tin of
Presbyterian Mixture. Solid latakia smothered
with a bunch of orientals. Top quality.

I'm going to try to hunt down a tin or two
and if anybody can help me, let me know.

The other two "finds" were Esoterica's
Dorchester, a wonderfully sweet virginia
blend of delightful complexity and Fairmorn's
Lancer's Slices. Lancer's Slices is solidly
in the heavy latakia tradition of Old Ironsides
and Germain's Special Latakia Flake. I didn't
rub it out much, so the smoke lasted a nice
long time. I'll be getting more of both, but
especially the Lancer's Slices. What a deal!

Here's what I took out:
tin of Durbar
tin of Deep Hollow (haven't tried this yet)
pouch of Altadis CA100 (haven't tried this yet
and there were two pouches in there)
Lancer's Slices (about three bowls worth)
and a bowl or so of the following:
-- Dorchester
--Elizabethan Mixture
--St. James Woods
--Mac Baren's Plumcake
and a bowl or so of various aromatics
that I no longer remember.

Here's what I put in. I noticed that the box
leaned heavily toward the aromatics, and I
tend to smoke mainly non-aromatics, so this
worked out pretty well. It also works well if
you're a burley lover. I've found that burley
does not agree with me (with only a few
exceptions), so there's a bunch of burleys here.

-- 1 tin of McCranie's Red Flake (very good)
-- 1 tin of F&T's Blackjack (very good)
-- almost full tin of C&D's Pegasus (burley)
various sized samples of:
-- Altadis' Count Pulaski (nice)
-- Pipeworks & Wilke's #524 (latakia, Yenidje)
-- McClelland's 2010 (excellent virginia)
-- Sam Gawith's Full Virginia Flake (my
       favorite virginia)
-- Mac Baren's HH Mature Virginia
-- Milan Tobacconists' King's Ransom (latakia)
-- Milan Tobacconists' Jefferson Street
-- McCranie's Owner's Choice (virginia)
-- Smokers' Haven's Exotique Mixture (balkan)
-- Smokers' Haven's Our Best Blend (english)
-- pipesandcigars.com's Frenchy's Sunza Bitches
       (perique, perique, perique!)
-- pipesandcigars.com's Old Tartan (burley
       and deertongue)
-- Pipeworks & Wilke's Nut Brown Burley
-- Pipeworks & Wilke's #13 (tough to describe)
-- Cornell & Diehl's "pseudo-Crooner" (burley)

A note on the "pseudo-Crooner". C&D's Crooner
is just about the only burley blend I like. It's
a cube-cut burley mixed with deertongue and topped
with some molassas. Very tasty indeed. But I
found that while I don't dislike the deertongue,
it doesn't do much for me. I know that it's in
short supply, so why waste it on me? I called
Craig Tarler and asked if he would mix up two
pounds of #104: Crooner but to hold the
deertongue. He said he would, and did. And
here is the results. Note that I do plan to
have a bit of "regular" Crooner on hand to smoke
on occasion, but this burley can be an all day
smoke.

Hope you all have as much fun with this as I
have had.

Keep me in mind for the next one . . .

Durbar is indeed one fine smoke. It was always my favorite of the Dunhills
and I liked it so much I once named a fictional character Durbar. I have
about a dozen tins stashed away and plan to open them only on very special
occasions. Has anyone found any sort of replacement for this fine tobacco?

Best,
Joe in Austin

I think you're confusing "Dunbar," a Virginia by Esoterica, with "Durbar,"
an Oriental/Balkan by Dunhill. Dunbar is, to the best of my knowledge, still
in production. Durbar is not.

Seems they just stooped producing a slew of tinned Dunhill tobacco.
Which ones are they?

Cool... that's more than I thought, honestly. But, this is a big
group. It'll be great to meet everyone there. I'll be sharing a table
with Jaden Hew Len (big Hawaii'n dude that some of you have seen and
met in Chicago). I'll also do plenty of walking around.... :)

Incidently, I'll be selling and hopefully shopping with some of the
proceeds. Anyone here taking any danish or danish-esque pipes? I'll
be on the lookout!

Allan,

As far as I can tell, these Dunhill blends have
fallen off of just about every website out there:

-- The Aperitif
-- Durbar Mixture
-- Elizabethan Mixture
-- Standard Mixture Mild
-- 3-Year Matured

The following Dunhill blends seem to be still in
supply, some even in bulk:

-- Early Morning Pipe
-- Light Flake
-- London Mixture
-- My Mixture No. 965
-- Nightcap
-- Royal Yacht
-- Standard Mixture Medium

And, since the London Dunhill Store seems not to
carry tobacco anymore, I guess I'll never get to
sample "Baby's Bottom" . . . Oh, well.

This is sad.
I noticed that it must have been pretty hush-hush as when I went to
order a few more tins the different web sites came up empty.
The Aperitif, Durber and Standfard Mixture Mild are three I enjoy
immsensely.
Yet those Morons kept Royal Yuck around.
Appreciate the information though.

Thanks Jud. I suspect that these little ones will provide me with multiple
occassions to long to escape to the balcony with my pipe for some quiet
time. But I am sure that there will also be plenty of joy, and frankly I am
tired of waiting. I want to meet them and hold them!

The only time I was in London, I wanted to get to the Dunhill store, but the
hotel gave me the wrong directions and I never found it. We didn't have time to
spend looking any more. I had wanted to get some of the Baby's Bottom just to
try it.

For what it's worth, when I was in McCranies a couple of weeks ago, I
noticed they had Apertif and I believe 3 - Year. Might be worth a
