I've often stated that I'll not name a "favorite" pipe, because choosing one
would seem almost like choosing a favorite child. My children, both briar and
human, are all unique and all have things which make them special. Still, there
are a few pipes which rise above others. The first true "high grade" I ever
owned, a Werner Mummert, is a smoking machine. Jan Zeman's "Dorado" may be the
showpiece of my collection, and is an amazing smoker to boot. A Rad Davis that
is possibly the single best smoker I've ever owned. Certain of my pipes have
that extra glow to them.

Are there pipes in your collection that have the special, rare aura about them?

Wish I could come up with "that one", John. But answer is none fit that
description.

Sure, there are pipes in my collection that I'm always glad to see when they
come up for their turn in my collection.  Two come to mind, both Ardors, and
both that I got in collections I bought.  One is a large bent that has always
given me good smokes - just the right chamber capacity, feel in the hand, and
tactile comfort.  The other is a large Dublin that I know will give me good
back-to-back smokes when I travel, and it also has a good capacity.  On several
occasions, I've been able to start it on the drive to the airport in Chicago,
and finish it when I get off the plane in another country.

I wish I had remembered to include Ardor in my original post, Joe. Every one I
own is a quality smoker.

Like you, John, the smoking quality of the Ardors is just one of the features
that attracts me.  The two I mentioned are the ones which have other things for
me that raise them above the others, but that doesn't mean the others aren't
good in their own right.  Some of them have the comfort stem, which for me is a
real plus, both to the eye and to the comfort they have in the teeth.

Gromit is our newest Boston. And our smallest. An Abby and Charley pup he
weighs in at ten pounds at six months. Last night we let the dogs out to go and
all came back except Gromit. We looked for him and even went to the neighbor
that shot the puppy in the eye a couple of years ago. They said they had not
seen hem. However a bit after i talked to them there was activity at their
house. Lights on in the garage and Regina saw her carry out a wiggling blanket.
We resumed the search at first light this morning. Regina had a feeling to
drive through the trailer park near us. She saw people outside holding him.
They said someone had dropped him off last night around 10 PM. They put him in
a yard with two big dogs, Black Labs. They had already put up flyers at the
market. And their neighbor is the son of a nearby neighbor that is owned by of
our pups, Ruger, so they sent word our way through him. However, we had already
located him. Stupid move on our crazy neighbors part as he is still on
probation for shooting the puppy.

Howard,

That is truly upsetting. Mans inhumanity to man is hard enough to accept, those
who are cruel to those who cannot defend themselves, whether children, the aged,
or your little puppy are way beyond the pale. It remains one of the strongest
arguments to me for capital punishment. (maybe not for cruelty to a puppy, but
there is a connection between the personality which will torture animals, and
the person who will do the same thing to humans, if they think they can get away
with it.)

Would it work to approach this the same way some neighborhoods do having a known
sex offender. Get the pet owners together and make sure they are aware of the
threat and who poses it. form a neighborhood watch where this person who lives
near you (definitely not a a neighbor as I define it) knows he is being watched
and won't get away with it. I don't the laws where you are, but if it is a
proven case that he has done this before, and may well do it again, it should
give you some leeway.

I would guess you have already contacted the police or the court which ever is
appropriate with the previous order. Is the Animal Protection Agency strong
where you are? they could be a help too. They are one of the places people go
first when a pet is missing, and generally they have NO sympathy or tolerance
for this type of behavior. Whether can "officially" do anything, they may be
able to help in organizational ways, copying, printing, etc. a phone # that is
not attributable to any one of you to set you up as a target to this creep.

The whole idea is to set him up where it is not you vs. him, but the
neighborhood vs. him.

Good luck,

AL (in Canada)

I prefer the Italian pipes, although I've never seen a Jan Zeman except
referenced on this list. I collect and have quite a few Radices, Ser Jacopos, a
few Charatans, and James Upshall's.

Because I'm visually impaired, I tend to prefer those pipes with tactile
features to them, so I have a fair number of the Italian pipes that have inlaid
briar on the stem, and of course, the R's and SJ's with the candle-wax trim on
the bowls.

The Italians are nice, and Ardor is an Italian brand. Jan Zeman is out of New
Zealand, and carves excellent pieces. I've got a whole bunch of them.

are a few pipes which rise above others. The first true "high grade" I ever
owned, a Werner Mummert, is a smoking machine. Jan Zeman's "Dorado" may be the
showpiece of my collection, and is an amazing smoker to boot. A Rad Davis that
is possibly the single best smoker I've ever owned. Certain of my pipes have
that extra glow to them.

He is pretty well despised in the neighborhood for some reason. And in his
previous neighborhood as well. I'm sure he didn't throw Gromit in with the two
big dogs so he could snup to them for warmth but with the expectation they would
tear him apart. Turns out the big dogs were scared of him.

The good part is that he works for the Oregon Youth Authority, On top of that
he is certified to counsel kids who are fire starters and animal abusers. I
intend to make it my hobby to cause him as much misery as possible.

Still learning after all these years, I wonder . . . .

How many times a day do you smoke a pipe?

Have you an "old reliable" tobacco you smoke more than others?

If so, what might it be?

thanx for the help,

JR, in western Washington

We're all still learning.

On work days I smoke two pipes, typically. One for the commute and one at home
in the evening. On my days off, though, there's almost always a pipe in my
mouth.

One old reliable? Not really, though the closest would be Haunted Bookshop. I
always have numerous tins open, straight Virginias, VaPers, Burley VaPers, etc.
Within reach now are Briar Fox, Heinreich's Special Curly, Triple Play, 5115,
and JackKnife Plug.

Before you get rid of the briars, just buy the cobs and see how you do smoking
them and nothing else. There may come a time in a year or two when you decide
you'd like to smoke briar again.

Well let me see. Hmmmm how many times a day would be at the most three and
at the least none.

old reliable would be 5100 Red Cake. I have a collection of about 20 pipes
and rotate them all some don't smoke as well as others tho.

But as you say we are always learning new thngs.
