On International Human Rights Day 2008, After 60 Years..
Why Human Rights?
Public Meeting

Wednesday 10th December, 6pm
New Theatre, LSE Houghton St WC2 (nearest tube Holborn/Temple)

"Men are not capable of doing nothing, of saying nothing, of not reacting to injustice, of not protesting against oppression, of not striving for the good of society and the good life in the ways they see it" Nelson Mandela (First Court Statement, 1962)

On the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) creating a global framework for the protection of the rights of everyone, and in this climate of multiple crises, we invite you to consider: do we really have human rights? What's right and wrong with them? Can 'rights' help us respond to the challenge of reconstructing society; so that justice, mutual respect and equality prevail? And if so, what concrete actions must we now take?

Speaker/panel: AC Grayling, Asad Rehman, Andy Worthington (author of the Guantanamo Files), Hicham Yezza, Teresa Hoskyns (London Social Forum) Peter Tatchell and Vivienne Westwood. Q&A with panellists, followed by discussion on where to take the UK civil rights movement.

Also, everyone is cordially invited to an informal pre-meeting from 3pm Room H102, Connaught House building (LSE, on Aldwych) to discuss background info, action proposals and any other issues of concern. This will include a brief presentation on Lefebvre's Right to the City.

Event organised by CAMPACC, the London Guantánamo Campaign, London Against Injustice and others. Hosted by LSE Students' Union.

Background Info
Human Rights in the UK
10th December 2008 at the LSE

The Purpose of Event

On the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) creating a global framework for the protection of the rights of everyone, and in this climate of multiple crises, we invite you to consider: do we really have human rights? What's right and wrong with them? Can 'rights' help us respond to the challenge of reconstructing society; so that justice, mutual respect and equality prevail? And if so, what concrete actions must we now take?

The 10th December event at the LSE looks to mark the 60th anniversary by finding ways to make human rights relevant to all, and not just activists, lawyers and academics. Asking the question: how can a broad civil rights platform encompass the full range of relevant social movements in Britain today? We will explore beyond civil liberties and individual rights to consider: what are humanity's essential, and collective economic, social, political and environmental rights, for which we must fight?

Event Themes

Speakers, panellists and questioners may wish to consider the history of the UDHR - successes, failures, shortcomings, opportunities  - under six broad themes: Culture, Development, Dignity and Justice, Environment, Gender and Participation. They may also wish to refer to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the Human Rights Act (HRA) aswell as the EU Charter of Fundamental Freedoms and recent UK Cabinet proposal for a Bill of Rights and Responsibilities. And in respect of any or all of these, and the various crises we find ourselves in: what concrete actions must we now take?

Format, Topics & Speakers

1. Afternoon Seminar - Prison and Society

3-5pm Room H102, Connaught House Building (on Aldwych)

(1) Aisha Maniar, Hicham Yezza, Massah Barnett and others on the politics of detention;

(2) Professor Michael Edwards, Teresa Hoskyns, Dave Wetzel [Labour Land Campaign] and others on Land, Housing and Lebfevre's Right to the City; and

(3) Action proposals, discussion and preparing questions for Evening Conference.

2. Evening Conference - Building a Movement

6-9.30pm New Theatre, Building E,  Houghton St

6pm Introductions and Initial Questions for Panel & Speakers

Head of State Immunity (Peter Tatchell)
Academic Freedom (Hicham Yezza)
Public Services (Hugh Lanning, Deputy General Secretary Public and Commercial Services Union PCS)
Lebfevre's Right to the City (Teresa Hoskyns)
Housing / Land Issues (Michael Edwards and Dave Wetzel)

(with guest appearance from Vivienne Westwood)

7pm Speaker Sessions
Civil Liberties (Professor AC Grayling)
War on Terror (Andy Worthington)
The Environment (Asad Rehman)

8-9.30pm Audience Q&A Discussion and Action Proposals

*Brief Note About Q&A*

We want to come out of the day with concrete, shared ideas about how to move forward the human rights movement after our 60-year experience with the UDHR, and more recently the ECHR and HRA. We have chosen the topics, speakers and panellists to provide the potential foundation for a movement based on liberty, dignity and justice for all in the UK and beyond. Furthermore, both the timetable and Q&A format are designed to leave sufficient space to discuss and plan future actions together. We would therefore ask speakers to plan their presentations accordingly: what collective actions we must now undertake? And we would ask participants to do the same in relation to any questions, comments or concrete proposals they put forward.

Happy, Joyous - Ecstatic - New Years to all of you!

As we stand blinking in the new dawn light of 2009, we are already getting excited about the next round of Sacred Ecstasy Trance Dances...

Our first of the year is back at the beautiful St Nicholas Church on Dyke Road - The 'Ancient Mother Church of Brighton'. It's on Friday the 16th of Jan, and doors open at 7:30 for a prompt 8 o'clock start.

Our Winter Solstice event had 50 amazing beings dancing and trancing in God's house, and we'd love to see just as many of you for this next event - after all, the more people, the more energy, the more energy, the more ecstasy, and the deeper the healing can go. We hope you can join us in co-creating yet another magical event!

In a slight change from our usual format, this event will finish at 10 pm, and we will then be leaving the space open for a little longer than usual (til 10:45), and offering teas from the 'Sacred Cafe' at the back of the church. This will give all of you more of a chance to connect with each other and have a chat, or talk more about the journeys you have been on - if you are in the mood for doing this of course!

Also just to reassure the London contingent of the tribe - we have not forgotten about you! We are just about to book our new regular venue, and will be starting with a once a month event. It took us a little longer than expected to find just the right venue, but we think we've found it! More info will follow soon!

Also we will be expanding into weekend workshops very soon, so for those that wish to go for a deeper immersion into our work, this is a great way to take things further. Again more detailed info will follow soon....

And please let us know if you wishing to be lovingly removed from our lists!

Wishing you much joy, a healthy dose of ecstasy, and great peace for 2009!

Hi there,

Thanks to all those that made the last Brighton event - we had 60 amazing beings trancing into deep space, the energy was beautiful!

Because numbers are getting so big, we have decided to switch to a twice a month event - still at this magical church, the oldest in Brighton.

We will be continuing to offer a blend of live and recorded music, and the cafe was such a success that we will continue to offer this before and after the event.... so the dance journey finishes at 10, but people can hang around until 10:45 for tea n chats if you feel in the mood...

No need to book in advance, just turn up on the night - but if you can give us a facebook 'yay' so we can get a sense of numbers that would be great! Cost of the event is £12 full price or £9 concessions. We hope to see you for the journey on Saturday 31st!

ALSO! We feel it is time to activate our group page on facebook - feel free to check it out and share your insights from your trance journeys if it feels right for you to do this. The group name is Sacred Ecstasy Trance Dance.

Feel free to join if you haven't already. We hold the vision of creating this into a portal for sharing the wisdom we each receive through trance dance, with the wider community...

And please do let me know if you don't want to be sent info about our trance dance events - we can lovingly remove you if you so wish!

By order of the Government of the Dead - the only good government is a dead government!

Krewe needed for Zombie Shopping Spree, Oxford St, Tuesday, Feb 24, Oxford Circus (Niketown) 6 p.m.

Be the zombie you always wanted to be – zombie bankers, zombie bunnies, zombie buddhists, zombie barmaids, zombie bishops…zombies from all walks of death welcome!

Pancake race for indigenous English zombies – bring pan for tossing fried brains (Bond St tube 6:30pm)

Lurching to gallows at Tyburn (just past Primark) at what is now called Marble Arch.

Public hanging at 7 p.m.

Expressing one's inner zombie is perfectly legal, although eating people alive is problematical, so best foot forward (if still attached), and keep it light for this peaceful carnival parade.

Zombies have every right to go shopping, seeking out the deals and bargains we need in these belt-tightening times. Where better than Oxford St on the night of Mardi Gras – Pancake Day to all you English zombies.

For the growing number of zombies concerned with climate change – can't have those swamps drying up can we? – join our traditional New Orleans style Umbrella march to spread your message.

Next time you eat a banker - er meet one - keep his/her umbrella, and paint it with your favourite climate change slogan. We'll lurch around outside those shops churning hot air into the Oxford St evening, moaning and groaning 'climate change – it's a no brainer!".

For the English zombie the most venerable custom on Shrove Tuesday is racing down bendy bus routes tossing battered brains: bring a pan if you can. Start 6:30pm sharp outside Bond St tube.

If you're an apolitical zombie, you are the perfect customer for these apocalyptic times. Spend your way out of this deep shit creek of recession – the banks are busted, the climate's catastrophic, the oil and gas are gone, but hey, who cares, let's go shopping! Enjoy!

The promenade from Oxford Circus to Marble Arch will be in the style of a New Orleans jazz funeral complete with musicians and mourners and a "spot of window shopping along the way."

Our grand finale converges at Tyburn (Marble Arch) where we hope to hang a criminal or two - Hoon, Brown, Darling, Fred Goodwin (ex RBS) and a couple of bankers are just a few characters sentenced to be hanged from the neck until not quite dead, so you zombies get your favourite carnival snack – live brains!

Come perform, protest, film, photograph, and report back. A family friendly event. So smile at the innocent children!!!!

The project is the work of Government of the Dead, (behind the Canary Wharf Halloween protest Dancing on the Grave of Capitalism) in collaboration with art collective Artport which came to prominence at the Heathrow Terminal 1 Climate Rush protest in January.

"The economy lurches from deep crisis to deeper crisis," says a Government of the Dead spokeszombie. "Capitalism is not only failing, it's dead in the water. And yet politicians insist on shovelling tax payers' money into a black hole in the form of bail outs and bonuses. This has not brought the economy back to life. We are all witnessing its zombie remains destroying the lives of ordinary people in the form of rising unemployment and home repossessions."

Organisers of the event which starts outside Nike Town at Oxford Circus insist it's a family friendly event, with pancake races and "lots of community spirit," with teams of zombies racing in heats. Organisers anticipate "a few hundred revellers"

"We understand how hard it is for people right now," says the spokeszombie. "We're not making light of the catastrophe, but in times like these we need a laugh. Zombies will be doing a spot of window shopping, because, let's face it, who's got spare cash to buy stuff, these days. The government insists we can buy our way out of economic collapse. Zombies would love to do their bit to help the Great British high street. But the best we can do is press our noses up to the glass!

"We'll have a carnival atmosphere, invoking the spirit of New Orleans, a place that has known more than its fair share of disaster and yet embodies the human spirit's ability to overcome."

As well as the public hanging of banking effigies, music, theatricals and songs are planned. "If people can't get zombie costumes together, we recommend they come join the procession dressed in black and white."

Carnival protest targets bankers

An activist with a banker effigy
Activists plan to hang an effigy of a banker in March Arch

Campaigners dressed as zombies will 'hang bankers' in central London to protest against the way the government has been handling the economic crisis.

The group said it will march from Oxford Street to Marble Arch in the style of a New Orleans jazz funeral and in a Mardi Gras carnival mood.

A pancake race for Shrove Tuesday will be held before the 'public hanging' of effigies of bankers at March Arch.

The event is organised by Government of the Dead and artists' group Artport.

'Grand finale'

A spokesperson for the event said: "We are all witnessing its (bank bailouts and bonuses) zombie remains destroying the lives of ordinary people in the form of rising unemployment and home repossessions.

"We're not making light of the catastrophe, but in times like these we need a laugh."

The protestors said their dancing and singing carnival will end in Marble Arch, formerly known as Tyburn where public executions were held.

"The grand finale will be at Tyburn where we hope to hang a criminal or two. They'll be hanged from the neck until not quite dead," the group's website said.

Organisers are hoping the family event, which is the pancake race, will attract hundreds of people and urged participants to either come dressed as zombies or wear black and white clothes.

Banquet at the Bank

12 noon, April 1st, Bank of England.

Bring friends and family food to share.

Come celebrate the future: a world no longer led by fools, a world
without war, unemployment, home repossessions or self-inflicted
climate chaos.

Music, theatre, and a convergence of communities.

The bankers, the politicians and their corporate cronies made the
foolish mess we're in. Only we the people can sort things out. Seize
the day. Close your business, take a
day off work and come out to play your part.

Meet 11.00am at either Moorgate, Canning St, Liverpool St or London
Bridge Railway station to move off at 11.30am. Four carnival parades
will proceed to the belly of the beast: The Bank of England. PS:

Hi to all of you,

I hope you are enjoying the spring vibes, as the snowdrops and tulips raise themselves out of the awakening earth. What better time to dance in some new positive energy to help us all spring into action and begin creating and engaging with life after the Winter chill.

So.... how about an evening of ecstasy to galvanise intentions and bring fuel to the creative fires of life??

We are back in the most magical church in Brighton this Friday 6th March, for another trance dance - the journey is now 2 hours 30 so we have more time for the ecstasy, and we will be offering a Special Extra Thing to engage with for all those that turn up at 7:00 - this is our new doors open time. The dance starts at 7:30. Finishes at 10....

Music will be a mix of live percussion, shamanic journeying music, and the best in world beats and ambient electronica - plus a live sound healing to finish things off as usual.

And Manna will be offering their mix of high vibe foods, to help ground everyone back down after the journey. Their cafe will be serving between 10 - 10:45....

We hope you can join us for the magic,

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all well. I just wanted to let you know about a great event happening this Sunday in Brighton. Caroline Carey will be visiting from Ireland, to offer her Alchemy in Movement dance workshop. Full details are in the message below.

I really recommend this class - Caroline has had many years of experience working with Gabrielle Roth and Ya'Acov and Susannah Darling-Khan, and she will be bringing her unique teaching to the Ancient Mother Church of Brighton, so why not join us in sacred space to dance deeper into truth?

Personally i can't wait as it means i can finally receive a dance in this beautiful church! Hope to see you there!

Wishing you all much peace and love-filled moments,

Hi to all of you,

May you all be loving the sunshine that is blessing us at the moment. I just wanted to let you all know about the final line up for the trance dance this Friday 3rd April, starting at 7 pm....

Also for those that don't know yet, we have gone back to our old prices - so it is now £12 full price, £9 concessions (with ID).

We are really pleased to announce that the live percussion will be back and very much in effect - Will is going to be offering some didj and drums, and Rowan will be joining to add that extra percussive beat to help guide you into the trance. Yay!

We will also be inviting people to connect more within the dance with one another. The main trance dance section will still be about going in and taking an inner journey, but the warm up and the final stages of the dance will involve a bit more connection for those that are up for it. This is not required so if you still want to come for a deep inner jounrey of your own you are most welcome, but we've had such a positive response every time we've invited connection recently, that we feel its time to start exploring this further.

We will also be joined by a photographer who will be capturing some of those moments of ecstasy that occur through the trance journey. Please do let me know before the event begins if you would prefer not to be photographed. Also to reassure people who are photographed - you are likely to be a blur of movement anyway, as we are seeking to capture the energy of the event rather than the details of individual people.

Please feel free to forward this to anyone you think may be interested! The more people the more magic!

Wishing you all spring-filled growth and an abundance of love,

Love,

Shanti

Hello

Why are these events so expensive?

Why don't you price it just so you cover the costs of hiring the hall and
equipment, instead of trying to make money out of it?

Hi there,

I just wanted to give everyone news of the next London Trance Dance event. Sadly our planned event next week (April 21st) at Moving Arts Base has had to be canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. However, because of a lucky synchronicity we will be offering one in London this Sunday (tomorrow) for all those that can make it.

It is part of a Healing Festival in Surbiton, on a beautiful island called Ravens Ait. The Cosmic Jam will also be great I am sure, with Darren Sangita, Ashearon and Antarma…. so Sunday night is looking like a nice full eve....

marcus has a point, how can we really have sacred ecstacy and money
making at the same time. it seems like a trip down the library could
be much more fun and rewarding. there are a lot of interesting books
on shamanism and plenty of sacred places to practice shamanic
journeys, wake up peeps...... this is our dream.
