Hiya, I'm a newbie here. I was just looking
around and spotted "potato guns." Seemed interesting, so
I looked at this site. I don't launch potatos
myself, but believe me, if I could, I certainly would!
I'd just like to learn the basics, and join in on
what seems to be a whole lot of

and welcome. I am a long time potato gunner here.
currently I have a stubby "bazooka" shoulder mount that
fires "new" potatoes from a 1" diameter barrel. Also I
have a howitzer that uses a 4"x3' firing chamber with
a 2" U joint going into either a 2"x5' or a 1.5"
X6' barrel. I can launch potatoes about 350 yards
with the 2" barrel and a 6 sec burst of aquanet hair
spray. Hopefully I'll scan in a pic in the next few
days...before i go on vacation. LOL trust me this is a lot of
fun!

i got2 questions what is the best setup for distance and can u get better
distance using ether instead of hairspray.

for distance a narrower diameter, longer tube is
better assuming the same size combustion chamber.
hairspray vs ether...offhand I would say ether but that is
without ever having used ether...it is more volatile and
I consider it more dangerous. that's my 2 cents.

I pretty much agree with the legnth thing but
just want to add one extra combustant(explosive-in a
way) Try carburetor(sp) cleaner. it's basically an
arisol can filled with a clean-almost pure alcohol like
chemical. I guarantee you you will get the best
distance-but one precaution-make sure you pour water/wipe the
spud gun down after your done for the day. if you
don't, after about a few months the carb cleaner slowly
eats away at the PVC and before you know it-it's not
really usuable anymore(mainly the cap "melts" to the
part it screws into.<br><br>hope this

Hey people, friday afternoon while a friend and i
were sitting around, eating hotdogs that i cooked on
my protable propane grill, and shooting spudguns
(with carb cleaner of course), i got kind of bored.
(amazing) so i sort of daydreamed and stared at the grill
and came up with an idea. I immediately jumped up,
ripped the regulator out of the end of the propane grill
(simply attached to the canister and has a know on top of
it to regulate flow) and sprayed some propane into
my already loaded spudgun. Not thinking it would
work i losely held the gun about 4 inches away from my
arm (bicep to be exact) when i fired, damn that
recoil.... i was amazed by how much more powerful the
propane was than carb cleaner (AND BEST OF ALL THE
PROPANE DOES NOT DAMAGE THE PVC LIKE CARB CLEANER
WILL!!!) so that new found fuel immediately got me
intrested again and i had a blast!!!<br><br><br>I would
highly reccommend that anyone who use combustion
spudguns invest in a small blowtorch adapter for a
portable propane can because this already vaporized gas is
a great combustant and it does not damage the PVC..
try it and yee shall not be

i have always been a fan of pneumatic guns, but
being out at college, its kind of hard to lug the
compressor around where ever im at and even harder to find
an outlet in a remote location, so i decided to make
a combustion gun that would do just as good so i
would have something portable; that, and all my friends
had combustion guns. i constructed it out of 4" pipe,
16" long with a detachable 2" barrel or 1.5" barrel.
my friends all use ether, but that didnt satisfy me
enough so i used propane. i found that that worked good
for me. a few weeks ago, my friend says "dude, you
gotta try some oxygen. it works so much better." so he
brings his potato gun over to my apartment and gives me
a little demo. he let the oxygen in from one of
those bernz-o-matic torches and sprayed a little ether
in it. it was really loud and the potato didnt leave
the barrel in one piece. the kick knocked him back
too. so i had to out do him so i obtained the valves
from a bernz-o-matic torch and attached the oxygen and
propane tanks to my gun, with tubing that goes directly
into the gun. i removed the barrel and went outside to
dry fire it for ratio experements. i let the oxygen
flow in for a while, then the propane. i sparked it
and it had a lot of flame. dissapointed, i tried
again, this time i used very little oxygen and about
enough propane to turn it a 1/4 turn and shut it off
right away. i sparked that and it was so loud! i fell
back in amazement. i tried again, this time doubling
the amount of propane i used. i set the combustion
chamber on the ground and sparked it. i saw a huge heat
wave come out and the sonic boom knocked me back on
the ground flat on my ass! i could feel the air rush
past my head! my ears hurt pretty bad after that one.
i was so amazed! i decided to try it again with the
barrel on and shoot a potato. i filled it up the same
and shot it. i dont know what happened. i had it at a
45 degree angle and fired the gun, but i didnt see
the potato at all. i assume it went pretty far. that,
or the potato completly vaporized in the barrel. it
was so loud! i havn't had a chance to fire it since
and that was about a week ago, so more news to come
on that later this week. also, my friend that told
me about oxygen blew up his gun. he said he used a
little too much oxygen. he showed me the two remaining
pieces of all he could find. i suggest if your going to
set up something powerful like this, you reinforce
the chamber, and wear hearing protection--my ears
hurt for a couple of days.

I have been working with potato guns for years, and on free weekend, work on the
kinks and ratios for better distance. today, i launched a potato 458 yards and 2
feet!!!

You can erase other peoples messages.  Why don't you erase what you don't like,
that way you wouldn't need to make yourself out as some sort of overlord. (Which
I'm sure you're not.)

I put my ignitor in the endcap, which seems pretty risky.   Has anyone ever
blown off or blown up an endcap?

No I have never had a igniter blow out bot if you
set the end of the gun on the ground to reload after
a wile it will break costing what we spudguners
like the most is $money it is ok just take out the cap
when you reload

i've had the cap under the handle blow out
before,<br>it has bad threads though so it will blow out if
there is too much pressure, it only blows out every 5
or 6 shots and it doesn't shoot out like the
spud...it hit me in the leg and didn't hurt.. so as long as
your cap is on tight most of the pressure will go out
with the spud...<br> straw

Alright ive got to admit this must be one of the
coolest little hobbies. But where do I begin? Need some
simple plans with the beginner in mind. Once ive built

I posted a drawing of my new gun in the photos
section. I've looked all over and haven't seen anything
like it. It's got a five foot 1.5" barrel and a 3"
chamber just over a foot and a half long. If anybody
wants to know how to rig up the wooden accessories,

with your propane; all you need is fresh AIR after
each shot. As far as "rapid shooting" is concerned, I
would like to VERY much hear from Techleague to
substantiate there claimes. And, just how fast is there

Thnks for the site, I learned a lot I think for
an ignorant bastd. I`m a beginner at this, I shoot
apples, our local glut of ammo. I load from the rear,
This is how, my model has a 2" barrell and a 3"
combustion chamber. I hunted through my junkpile and the
best thing I was able to come up with was a 2" piece
of ridgid galvanized thickwall electrical conduit. I
ground down the end 65 degree taper or so and now by
slowly twisting the apple thru it out comes a perfectly
cut shot. Anything that this can bore thru can be
used "dead carp". I made a loading rod to tap in from
the back. The key is finding that piece of pipe thats
just a couple millimeters larger inside diameter than
your barrell. To big and your ammo will split, too
small and your shots will just bloop out the barrell.
Try to find an exhaust pipe that works, nothing in my
pile did. 2" ridgid is a drag to grind down. I also
made one tank am getting a similar car soon to turn
into opposing tank. Cut a 300 by 150 yard battlefield
on my "lower 47"<br> Everybody gets applesauced or
mashed potatoes or those diabolical hollowed out rounds
full of alpo or nastier. Nobody goes to the hospital!
No hematobas! No concussion injuries! I based my
first tank on this criteia. Well I`ve gone on long
