Dear All,

You are probably aware of the intense cold spell in Bangladesh. Meterologists expect this cold wave to continue for a few more weeks. The impact on the poor is easily imagined. Every day people are dying of cold and thousands are being affected by cold-related illnesses.

Jagoree and Drishtipat in collaboration other youth initiatives such as UNYSAB, 1 Degree Initiative and Jaago Foundation, are putting together a blanket distribution drive with dual goals of:
1) distributing blankets to the needy in Dhaka and outside, mostly North Bengal
2) buying the blankets from rural artisans who make blankets but are unable to reach the urban market

The hard deadline for the start of this drive is the 10th of January.

We can contribute to this drive from Canberra by providing funds to buy the blankets. If you let one of us know by email or phone of your willingness to contribute and the amount you would like to donate by the 8th of January, then we can provide the money to Drishtipat by the 10th. We will collect the money next week to redeem your pledge.

Thank you.

Internet Explorer Web Browser Security Bug Reported - SSO-AL2010-004

15 January 2010

Software and platforms affected

The following software is affected

Internet Explorer 8
Internet Explorer 7
Internet Explorer 6

for the following operating systems:

Windows 7
Windows Server 2008
Windows Vista
Windows Server 2003
Windows XP
Windows 2000

What is the problem?

There is a bug in versions 6, 7 and 8 of the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser, which could result in your computer being attacked by criminals. This bug is being actively exploited by criminals at present.

What we recommend you do

Microsoft is still investigating the bug, therefore a fix is not yet available. The following options are available to help protect your computer until Microsoft releases an update:

  1. Follow the instructions in the Microsoft bulletin to increase the security level of Internet Explorer and only allow known trusted sites to be unrestricted. Note that you may have to undo these changes once an update is available.
  2. Install the Microsoft FixIt to enable data execution prevention, which will help stop criminals from using this vulnerability. Note that you may have to uninstall the FixIt once an update is available.
  3. If you do not wish to install the temporary fixes mentioned above, consider using an alternate web browser (Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari are two such browsers) until an update becomes available. If you choose to install a different web browser remember to click "yes" when it asks to be set as the default. The following guidelines will assist you in setting the default browser if you are not prompted to do so, or already have another browser installed that is not the default:

Subject: Sad News_ Appeal for late Shakil's family in Melbourne

Dear All

I would like to share a sad news with u all that one of our junior friend - Shakil Mahboob - (ex mariner and ex-cadet of FCC) who had a massive heart attack few weeks back died in Melbourne on Thursday while on coma. Innalillahi wa Inna ilaihi Rajeun.

He was only 40 and left behind his wife and 2 young kids (5yr son and 9yr old daughter). He was laid to rest after Jumma prayer on Friday in Melbourne.
Shakil's father and younger brother are in Melbourne now to console the family.

After his sudden death, Shakil's immediate family members, community members, friends and neighbors met and discussed about the financial situation and future of the young family. It was decided that the family will stay in Melbourne. The family needs a permanent home so that kids can continue their education. It was decided to buy a 1-2 br Unit/Flat in Melbourne immediately as a long-term solution. Initial assessment showed that Shakil's savings, super, work benefits etc will not be enough to cover the high cost of buying a property in Melbourne. Initially family can survive on Centre Link payments etc provided they don't have to pay any rent or mortgage.
After consulting with Shakil's close friends in Sydney and Melbourne, we have decided to go for a fund raising drive from the Bdesh community in Australia as well as Shakil's close friends, colleagues abroad.

We are morally obliged to come forward and help the young family at this critical moment.
Our collective efforts will make a big difference to the young family to survive in a decent way.

I volunteer myself to collect the contributions and transfer it to Shakil's family by 15th June 2010. Please donate generously for a noble cause

Please deposit your contribution/donation/Sadaqa to the following Westpac Bank account:
Account Name: Nawshad Parvez Shah
BSB No : 732280, Account No: 587689

Pls send me an e-mail and write ur name in the reference when you deposit your donation.
For any info pls contact Shakil's close friend in Sydney: Saiful Alam at 0431056509 or myself at 0402385342.

Pls forward this message to all your other friends/neighbors.
May Allah show mercy on the departed soul and help all of us.

Kind Regards.

BEN deplores real estate developers' behavior
------------------------------------------------------------------

Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN), the global network of non-resident Bangladeshis and their international friends, takes strong exception to and deplores strongly the way some real estate developers attacked the State Minister for Works, Mr. Abdul Mannan and Prof. Jamilur Chowdhury, the expert who was given the responsibility to review the Detail Area Plan (DAP) necessary for implementation of the Dhaka city Master Plan. They made this attack publicly, in presence of journalists, in a recent meeting held in the Secretariat. The developers are apparently upset by the proposed DAP aiming to retain 21 percent of the land as flood water retention zones.

It is well known that many unscrupulous developers are capitalizing on the housing demand by capturing wetlands in and around Dhaka city indiscriminately and promising housing construction on lands that are still under water. Yet, filling up of wetlands will leave no room for rain and flood water, aggravating the water logging problem that has already become serious in the city.

It is quite natural for these developers to oppose DAP that preserves wetlands and restricts the space for their projects. However, the audacity they displayed in attacking the minister publicly is unheard of. These people, some of whom have outstanding criminal cases against them, also had the audacity to question the integrity of Prof. Jamilur Reza Chowdhury, who is well known for his independence and honesty.

BEN hopes that the government will stand firm against the myopic demands of the developers and take strong action against those developers who violated the norms of behavior at the meeting. BEN also calls upon all the conscious citizens of the city and the country to thwart the machinations of the greedy developers.

Of course, the growing housing demand has to be met. However, this can be done by promoting decentralization and vertical growth. Decentralization will relieve the pressure on Dhaka city, and vertical growth will allow construction of dwellings while retaining space for passage of rain and flood water. The government also needs to switch from the Cordon Approach to the Open Approach to rivers, so that risk of flooding can be minimized and the problem of water logging can be avoided.

While deploring the behavior of many real estate developers, BEN however agrees with one of their demands, which is that Rajuk should quit the business of development and instead focus only on planning and regulation. The current practice whereby Rajuk is both the regulator and developer involves conflict of interest. It is open to question whether Rajuk housing projects of Purbachal, Jhilmil, and Uttara Phase II are also not encroaching wetlands. Moreover, Rajuk projects are mostly a way of benefitting select members of the elite at the expense of taxpayers, whose money is spent on these projects, and at the cost of the poor people, whose land is acquired for these projects. Enough of such grossly socially unfair projects!

The recent tragic fire in old Dhaka shows how enormous a task of planning and regulation Rajuk has at its hand, and how poorly it is performing that task. The government should therefore take an immediate decision debarring Rajuk from further development activities and ordering it to focus fully on planning and regulation. Once this is done, Rajuk will occupy a higher moral ground to oppose the shameless developers who are willing to jeopardize the future of the entire city in order to enrich themselves.

While reformulating Rajuk’s objectives, BEN hopes that the government will take immediate action against the developers who were so pompous as to threat the Minister. The stake is very high. The government has to protect its credibility and honor. Taking this opportunity, BEN applauds the State Minister Abdul Mannan, Prof. Jamilur Reza Chowdhury, BAPA, BELA, and all other organizations and individuals who are trying to have pro-environment DAP in order to save Dhaka city from a calamity.

Canberra , August 18, 2010 (Crickettomorrow.com)

For only 50% of your match fee, you can now easily make sure the opponent batsmen, who is giving you hard times, will not play against you in the near future.

This is a great bargain!

All you have to do is to select a batsman you don’t want to see again and throw the ball as hard as you can from mid-pitch to his body at the crease. You should aim at the bare positions of his body where no Pads or other guards are in place. Yes, it is as easy as it sounds. Afterwards you may have to have a date with the match referee. But over a cup of coffee with him you can explain the necessity of that throw. Obviously, you were throwing at the stumps, and your fourteen generation’s future was depending on that throw alone, and co-incidentally the batsman was between you and the stumps. In one way it was the batsman’s fault, wasn’t it?

However, if you are not a player from England, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa, then things might not develop as you would have liked, but if you are one of those countries and the match referee is one of your relatives, then you will be laughing! You never know, you may be knighted in the New Year’s Eve for your heroics.

These recent heroics from Stuart Broad reminded me of the Roy Gilchrist incident in West Indies' 1958-59 tour of the subcontinent. Roy Gilchrist was arguably one of the fastest bowlers of all times if not the fastest. And he was infamous for his hot temper, aggressive bowling and frequent beamers (there was no restrictions on number of beamers per over like recent times). He was also very hard to control and had disputes with the captain Alexander (The captain repeatedly asked him not to bowl beamers, but he didn’t obey, I don’t know if Andrew Symonds’s nickname “Roy†was referring to this Roy or not). West Indies used to have only white players as captain those days. In the Fourth Test at Nagpur, after Indian batsman AG Kripal Singh had struck three consecutive boundaries, Gilchrist deliberately overstepped the bowling mark by six metres and delivered a bouncer which hit the Sikh batsman in the head and dislodged his turban.

That’s a ferocious act, I know and it reflected in his fate. Roy was sent home while the rest West Indian team continued the tour to Pakistan. That was the end of his test career (and rightfully so). He was too good a fast bowler to let go though, so Frank Worrell (in 1960-61) requested the West Indian selectors to include him in the team but the selectors refused point blank to even consider it.

That was the most ferocious fast bowler’s case and his shameful act was not tolerated. Now Broad’s recent act puts through a question:

Which way is our civilisation going?

Is 50% of match fee is equivalent to one very promising young player’s emerging career? This young Pakistani player Zulqarnain Haider had come to play for his country when his father was in Coma, and when the father came to life, he watched his son’s fight for his country in the crease from the clinic’s TV. What he has also seen is - Broad’s “Knighthood†act of injuring his son in a way which is not part of cricket. And when he will hear what “Huge†punishment Broad got from his Father (sorry, Match referee), how will he feel?

What do WE feel about it?

The Great Aussie Rickshaw Ride!
Want to help raise awareness about global poverty and be part of an amazing adventure in the process?
The Great Aussie Rickshaw Ride is a unique journey to focus attention on the Millennium Development Goals and the work of Symbiosis Bangladesh. It will take place 14 July 19 September 2010 and go all the way from Queensland to Tasmania.
The key message is that poverty can be overcome through people-powered change. To demonstrate, about 400 volunteers will pedal a genuine Bangladeshi rickshaw more than 2000km. Interactive forums will be held at schools and churches featuring Symbiosis fieldworkers sharing their personal stories about community development work in Bangladesh.
Limited positions are available for riders, on support crews and for churches or groups wanting to host a visit. To get involved, visitwww.aussierickshaw.org or contact Jeff McClintock: Ph (03) 6391 8835 / 0420 355 005 email: jeff@...

DHAKA, October 5, 2010 (Crickettomorrow.com) - Shakib Al Hasan shone with bat and ball to help Bangladesh to a morale-boosting win over New Zealand in a rain-curtailed one-day international on Tuesday.

Shakib hit 58 off 51 to steer the hosts to a competitive 228 all out and then grabbed four wickets to restrict New Zealand to 200-8 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on the outskirts of Dhaka.

Bangladesh won by nine runs through the Duckworth-Lewis method after rain midway through the second session forced the Black Caps' target to be revised to 210 in 37 overs.

It was only the second win for Bangladesh in 18 one-dayers against New Zealand and gave them the early advantage in the five-match series.

Shakib, who stood down as captain to concentrate on his cricket, hit eight fours after skipper Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and elected to bat first.

Recalled opener Shahriar Nafees made 35 and Junaid Siddique chipped in with 30, but the Bangladeshi batsmen failed to build on good starts.

Versatile New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori led from the front with 2-29 in 10 overs of accurate left-arm spin, while seamer Kyle Mills grabbed three wickets for 44 runs.

Jesse Ryder and Andy McKay took two wickets each.

Brendon McCullum gave the Kiwis a rousing start with 61 off 45 balls, including seven fours and two sixes.

McCullum and Jesse Ryder put on 53 for the first wicket by the seventh over, before three quick wickets from Shakib reduced the tourists to 85-4 by the 15th.

Heavy rain at that stage toughened New Zealand's target, but Ross Taylor battled bravely to make 42, while Vettori contributed 24.

Shakib conceded the rain break helped his team, but hailed the bowlers for sticking to the task.

"The rain went in our favour but our bowlers bowled in good areas," he said. "Today was my day but the others supported me as well and it was a team effort in the end."

Vettori rued his team's batting display as the target mounted.

"We had a reasonable start and to restrict them to less than 230 was a good effort," said Vettori. "We expected to win, but we let ourselves down in the second half of our batting effort.

"Brendon played really well, he gave us impetus but we couldn't back him up."

Bangladesh's day was marred by an ankle injury to captain Mortaza, who limped off the field after sending down just one over.

It was unclear if he will be available for Friday's second match at the same venue.

"He (Mortaza) has a sprained right ankle," team physiotherapist Michael Henry said. "We will be observing him for at least another 48 hours.

"The injured area has been put on ice. There will be no further investigation for the time being."

DHAKA, October 17, 2010 (Crickettomorrow.com) - Rubel Hossain grabbed four wickets as Bangladesh completed a sweep with a thrilling three-run victory over New Zealand in the fifth and final one-day international on Sunday.
The fast bowler finished with 4-25 off 9.3 sharp overs as New Zealand, chasing a 175-run target, were bowled out for 171 in the last over. He was named man of the match.
Bangladesh clinched the series 4-0, their first sweep against a major team. The second match was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.

"I think we played really well in this series. Our boys came hard at the New Zealand side and we had a really good series," said Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan.
"The wicket wasn't that great today and our batsmen didn't get big scores, but our bowlers did really well."
New Zealand needed eight runs to win in the final over with just one wicket in hand but Rubel, who had taken three wickets in his opening three overs, sparked celebrations in Bangladesh's camp when he bowled Kyle Mills (33).
He jolted New Zealand in his first over, dismissing openers Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder in the space of five deliveries. He then had Kane Williamson caught at second slip by Raqibul Hasan in his third over.
Bradley-John Watling was run out, while Ross Taylor was bowled by left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak as New Zealand's top five batsmen failed to reach double figures.
New Zealand were in danger of beating their lowest one-day total of 64 after being reduced to 20-5, but skipper Daniel Vettori (43) and all-rounder Grant Elliott (59) added 86 runs for the sixth wicket.
Vettori, dropped by Junaid Siddique at first slip off spinner Mohammad Mahmudullah when on 12, hit one six and one four in his 78-ball knock.
Elliott cracked seven fours in a 105-ball knock for his fourth half-century in one-dayers, but Mills kept alive his team's hopes before falling in the final over. Mills hit two sixes in his 47-ball knock.
"Bangladesh and Shakib were outstanding," said Vettori, whose side visit India next month for Test and one-day series.
"India are one of the best teams in the world, so hopefully we can regroup there."
Left-arm spinner Vettori (3-32) and fast bowler Mills (3-36) earlier bowled tightly to restrict Bangladesh to a modest total.
New Zealand did not allow the hosts to build a big partnership after the hosts elected to bat on a slow pitch. The highest stand was 55 for the fifth wicket between Shakib (36) and Mushfiqur Rahim (29).
Vettori removed opener Imrul Kayes (34) and Raqibul (six) before accounting for Mahmudullah (19).
Kayes was trapped leg-before while attempting to sweep, hitting two sixes and three fours in his 50-ball knock.
Andy McKay and Elliott each finished with two wickets.
