The term 'Catholic' originated in 107 AD in a letter written of
Ignatius of Antioch (see paragraph 8 of
http://www.eucharisticlife.com/ELimages/Timeline/200/Smyrnaeans.html).
To be Christian was to be Catholic, because Catholic did not have the
same meaning that it has today (not that that meaning has gone out of
use, by all means it has not and is still used by many protestant
churches in the Nicene and Apostles Creed, the "One, Holy, Catholic,
and Apostolic Church". Check a basic dictionary (such as
dictionary.com) and you will find that the first relevant "catholic"
definition is "pertaining to the whole Christian body or church".
A basic lesson in history will tell you that St. Valentine was alive
during the rule of Emperor Claudius II, NOT Constantine I. St.
Valentine died in AD 270. Constantine I wasn't even BORN until two
years later (272 AD). CLEARLY, any discussion of Constantine I in
regard to St. Valentine holds absolutely no relevance here.
I hate to break it to you, but Martin Luther was also Roman Catholic.
