I've seen the Casper puzzles in a store near me called "Deals". It's like a
dollar store, but they have items for more than a dollar (in 50 cent or
dollar increments).

I've got one of the Casper puzzles and it's really cool. It's lenticular -
the picture seems to move if you look at it differently.

I was never offended either, and both my brother and I got
spanked, only when necessary, as well. I am not a proponent, but don't
feel I've suffered emotional scars either. Like you said coolnesspark,
"Spankings were few and far between but they got their point across."

Pretty funny story about the dealer in Minnesota with the Dot set
aside for the fetishist. People get into all sorts of weird things,
but 'Little Dot?' -Is nothing sacred? -Ha! -There is a seller on ebay
who used to sell Harvey covers (art), and would describe Lotta as
"That Lard-ass little girl for all you 'Chubby' chasers out there."-I
always thought that a bit odd. I think people reveal more about
themselves in their choice of words than they think....Dave

Lucky you. I admit it is only but one factor that has brought me to my
current situation:

-low self esteem
-pessimistic outlook
-negative (even if accurate) self image
-chronic depression (formally diagnosed in 1992 and I've been on
antidepressants ever since)

As of now I'm pretty well separated from my parents. My daughter sees very
little of her grandparents.
My neice was to be born today. My brother's blog indicates nothing so who
knows? They exclude me my wife and my daughter anyhow.
My father's treatment of me has been very hurtful and the scars seem like
they will last as long as I do.

But it's a sure thing that since my brother is the favourite son, little Mya
will be the favourite grandchild. So yes it goes beyond that. Being born
with a disability I was imperfect - damaged goods.
My brother was perfectly born and can do no wrong. The barbaric treatment
of children by angry parents in the Harvey comics was its only poor point.

I just placed a new album on the Photos section of the group for the
Casper Puzzle.

The pieces are a harder plastic and tend to bend, so the pics aren't
that great. It is annoying putting it together, but I bet it would
look great framed! (and not have to put it together again!)

I'm not sure how many designs there are. I do remember seeing a few,
not just one.

Now, I have one question that does not pertain to the puzzle:
I've been to my local comic store, but I never see any Richie, Casper,
or other Harvey comics (except a bunch of coverless I got for free).

I've purchased online, but wondered if any other comic stores might
carry Harvey comics - mine does not seem to stock many older comics,
mainly new stuff and mostly superheroes at that!

Thanks for sharing these Shannon. They do look a bit tricky
to piece together, but a cool graphic. As far as the Harvey Comics
being at Comic book stores, That one is a catch 22, and there is no
simple answer. Mark and I have discussed this at length, and it seems
that most comic dealers are under the impression that they don't
sell,so there must be no interest, so they normally don't stock but a
few-(like you mentioned, the cover-less ones for free),So customers
are not exposed to them, so the impulse to buy is non-existent. For
example, Mark told me of a comic-book store near him that sold out of
the 5 copies of the new Casper book. Basically, people saw it and
bought it. When asked if they were going to re-order the book, the
reply was "They probably wouldn't sell". The truth is, if re-ordered,
they may sell ten more copies this month. The market definitely exists
for Classic Media to publish The Harvey titles, but I believe for it
to work, they would have to produce the comics in a way that truly
represented the magic and whimsical simplicity that got the ball
rolling in the first place. I'm talking about the Classic simple gag
covers . No word balloons on the covers. No "dough-veloping" fluid. No
"Dough-licious" stuff. Refer to RR PLRB#1-50, or Little Dot #1-75 for
classic covers. Parents are eager for this material for their
youngsters, and will be of the notion to re-capture some of the magic
themselves, as well as the kids being able to devour this stuff. So,
if the market exists, why isn't Classic Media taking advantage? In a
simple answer, lack of faith in the sell-ability of an already
time-proven market. Yes, a substantial amount of money would have to
be put into regular monthly printings, but if marketed right, it could
be successful. I suggest a more regional approach, and only invest in
a certain region, say Northern California , and do a limited run
(printing), and market to about 30-50 comic stores as a test run.
Market the comics to be visible, not stuck in a bin in the back, and I
believe they would sell, and be re-ordering. This is just my opinion,
and there are certainly more pieces to this puzzle than meets the eye.
Nothing like this is simple, except for the simple fact the market
already exists. Hopefully we will see some Harvey comics out in the
front spotlight soon. I know people have been saying this for years,
but you gotta have Hope!-Thanks again for sharing these Shannon!-Dave

...I had been picky my brain as to why this darling smoking jacket looked
so familiar until someone pointed out that it looked just like the one that
Richie Rich the comic book character always wore....

1) I had been picky my brain?? Where is this person from?
2) It looks a lot more like Baby Hugh Hefner's jacket than Richie Rich's
jacket.
3) If any Richie Rich character is a pothead, it's Jackie Jokers. That's a
no-brainer.

On one or two issues I do have I've seen both Reggie and Richie were
spanked a couple of times and I was a little disturbed by it.

As a young kid I wasn't spanked but I did have a Grandmother who used
to hit me and my cousin with a belt on occasion. That in itself was
the most severe punishment that either of us have gotten with
reprecussions. But in her later years she softened a bit but still
I find it out kind of sad that parents in The 50's and 60's would use
brutal force like that trying to get a message across.

Violence against children is something no adult should think about
much less do.

Jackie Jokers was, in my opinion, the coolest Harvey character. Richie was
even different around him - hipper, funnier, older-seeming.

I loved all the RR titles growing up, but I was really happy when I saw a
new issue of Richie & Jackie on the rack.

I'm surprised that the character of Jackie never was developed into a
sitcom or a cartoon. I think a modern day version of the wise-cracking kid
comedian would be perfect for a channel like Nickelodeon.

And maybe he could have a wealthy friend named Richie...

I'm surprised that the character of Jackie never was developed into a
sitcom or a cartoon. I think a modern day version of the wise-cracking kid
comedian would be perfect for a channel like Nickelodeon.

And maybe he could have a wealthy friend named Richie...

Hilarious Will! I laughed so hard at "picky my brain"! Also, it
does look like a baby 'Hef' jacket, and yes, Jackie Jokers eyes were
always drawn kind of half-closed. -HHmmm...

Does anyone remember the "Casper" cartoon show that FOX aired in the
late 90s based upon the hit movie? I didn't think so. Anyway, there is
a DVD that contains 15 episodes from the 1995-1999 series that came
out on September 15.

You can see the link on Amazon at:

I always thought Jackie added a cool, funky witty vibe that wasn't
always prevalent in other stories. Richie definitely did and said more
unusual things at Jackie's influence, almost a letting-loose or
liberating of the rich boy. I also agree that a wacky/cool character
like Jackie would work on a kids channel. People sometimes say that
the Harvey characters wouldn't work in todays kid-culture because it's
too simplistic and/or sugary sweet. I disagree with this theory, as
there are man mindless and sugary shows aimed at this market,
wherefore the Harvey material is more creative in many ways. Like Phil
pointed out, Jackie never seemed to get wings of his own, and Kool
Katz didn't cut it either. And to think-Jackie was a child of the 60's!

At least as far as the many RR titles are concerned, RR and Jackie
Jokers was fairly popular among Richie fans for a period of time.
The first 30 issues were fairly good, and after that just so-so. I
am fairly certain consideration was being given towards expanding
Jackie's appearance outside of Richie Rich, as I own a cover proof
for a title that never appeared during the first Harvey run,
called "Spotlight", and Jackie Jokers was the cover feature. The
cover was for issue # 2, and of course no such title was ever
published. I also remember a response to a letter in Richie's
mailbox addressing the popularity of Jackie Jokers, stating that if
the demand continued they would be considering more appearances. I
suspect the fact that the previously failed efforts of the first
Jackie Jokers series had an impact on any further plans for
increased exposure of the character.

Dan Busha just sent me a reminder and an update for this show, which I
have embellished on here. It is called Com-Toy II and will be from 9-4
on October 13, 2007 at the Troy Elks Club, 134 N Greenbush Rd, Troy,
NY, 12810. Not only will Sid be there, but also Fred Hembeck (Marvel,
DC artist and a big Harvey fan as well), John Hebert (X-Men) and
Francis Hogan (Matchsticks, RPG Illustrator), and 30 different comic
and toy vendors.

There's FREE ADMISSION! How can you beat that? If you are even
remotely in the area, I highly recommend meeting a true living Harvey
legend. Tell Sid and Fred I said hi, and also help Sid root for his
beloved Indians in the playoffs!

I posted the show flyer in the file folder.

A while back we here at the Vault were uploading cover photos of the
various Richie Rich books. We stopped because of the issue of
bandwidth. Yahoo has increased the bandwidth significantly enough that
I think that we can complete the job.

I would like to also get the covers more organized. They are organized
by title for each photo album, but within the photo album, sometimes
covers are titled slightly differently and out of order (see the album
for "Richie Rich and Cadbury" to see what I mean). So if we all can
add the cover photos, it will make for a more referential product.

As a reminder, the issue numbers below 10 need to be listed as 01, 02,
03 or they won't fall in numerical order. 001 for any title that
lasted over 100 issues, of which there are only 4: "Richie Rich" (1st
series), "Dollars and Cents", "Millions", and "Success Stories".

The covers can be scanned and uploaded from your own collection or cut
and paste from other websites (you know where those are). All I ask is
to keep the DPI down around 100 or so in order to accommodate all of
the pictures, since we ran out of room before, and please crop the
shot if necessary, and make sure it is a nice copy of the cover, and
if a cover has already been posted with a higher DPI, please correct
it and reload it with a lower DPI.

Also, let's just do the Richie titles for now, books included. Thank
you very much and good luck. I'll be helping, too.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but after the recent discussion
about the Grand Comics Database, wouldn't it make more sense for us
to scan and upload to their cover gallery rather than maintaining a
separate one here on the Vault?

It can be in both places. In fact, truth be told, the website I really
wanted to crib from was the GBD since the scanning work is already
done, and besides it's only Richie. Cut and paste!

hi.

i don't know if this has been discovered/confirmed. for all i know, it might be
common
knowledge. if so, my apologies for bothering everyone with this. if not, could
someone
please confirm/verify this?

i recently purchased a copy of Hot Stuff Sizzlers #4. sizzlers is, of course,
the hot stuff
reprint comics. besides hot stuff and stumbo stories, this issue has several
different filler
comics. 4 of these filler comics have a very distinct style. they appear to
have all been
made by the same artist.

i have encountered this artist's work in at least one other harvey comic. in
the comic there
were two 1/2 page gags. i think one featured an eskimo child. the other i
remember
more clearly. it was a gag about little aladdin having his lamp repaired.

when i first saw his art, i was very impressed by it and wondered who created
it. years
have passed since then, and i've learned a bit. after seeing this art in HSS #4
i think i
know who the artist is... Milton Stein.

here's a few links concerning milton stein, and his work:

no.html

i scanned the art inn HSS #4, and placed it in this group's photo album. can
anyone out
there confirm that Milt Stein created this art? i'm a big fan of Mr. Stein's
work, and would
be thrilled to find out that he worked at harvey comics.

These quotes are a perfect example of why I loved Jackie Jokers when I was
a kid.

Thanks for sharing them!
