Hi Auzzie contingent and thanks for the support.

As soon as I get all this "stuff" out of the trailer and out of my living room so I can function again, I'll be posting pictures of the trip on my web site. And I'll start on reworking this site.

We are no different than all the BIG dreamers in history...just got to have an extraordinary amount of persistence, passion and commitment. As one author said," we need to be marathon runners."  This trip was surely a marathon, even more so than the first one.

Already I am pouring over travel books for the north country( Yukon and North West Territories). That'll be our next big Canadian adventure.

And now I better get the Sassyscribe site moving again...any ideas for writing exercises?
love
Barb

Greetings Barb, Dave and Boo, the Wonder Van,

Congrats. I think Anita and I can hear you from across the water in West Oz. No doubt you'll tell us all about it over the ensuing months, eh!

As for keeping this site open: Definitely do that. Travel tips, etc, etc with a bias to the economical side of travelling would be a good idea. Plenty of we armchair gypsies would love to do what you three did, but we've just misplaced our gumption.

And when we look at the statistics for the trip it's amazing that you set yourself in forward gear and just let rip. No RIP with you is there?

So from the western contingent of sunny Oz to all our Canadian colleagues: Congrats, again.

Andreas, Anita, Bessie and Jaffa.

YAHOOOO!!! Oct.1,  we've arrived in Powell River, back in our mobile home that seems so big now!
It's been 130 days of fun, excitement, challenges, stress, awesome scenes and awesomer people, gifts of abundance and mountains of memories . Thanks to the RV Snowbird Show last weekend we were able to put the icing on the cake, selling and speaking on the book for 4 days. We shared our stories with hundreds of people, inspired some, told the tale everyday for 45 minutes and sold 38 books. Everyday when I got on stage to entertain the crowds, something else from the trip came to mind to tell them about.... they loved it. The final stats for the trip are:
Driving 19,962 km took 5,335 litres of gas costing $5890. Remember last time that the market profits basically covered the cost of the trip? This time was a little different, we went more distance and the cost of gas and everything else has risen in 4 years. So the 38 markets/shows made us $5560. That's pretty close to the cost of the gas. The rest of our expenses came out of our pensions, and thanks to the generousity of those who gave us cash towards the gas.
We stayed in only 18 campgrounds. The rest of the time we stayed at 14 Wal-Marts and many other assorted locations including very hospitable family and friends(new and old). That took us to both oceans, which of course we walked in and we covered 10 provinces. We were at 3 of the Great Lakes, crossed all 6 time zones, explored 5 Newfoundland lighthouses and took 7 ferries.
Dave volunteers with our local Tourism office and we are passionate about promoting the most beautiful place in BC. So we took 40 Powell River packages, 3 boxes of magazines and 150 pins to various offices and individuals.
This next  stat is just for fun and  for the Tim Horton junkies: I made a thermos of coffee each morning for Dave and counting what he drank before hitting the road, that was about 6 cups. He drank 6 cups  a day x 130 days at $1.50, that's  $1170 just in coffeee. ..not counting my thermos of tea. Think of all the money we saved just making a  thermos of coffee and tea each morning. Travelling on a dime and a dream,we're always conscious of ways to save money, and a ripple effect on the environment is we're  not using all those throw away cups strewn along the highways.
As soon as we get everything put away from the trailer and our lives back in home routine, I'll start getting my notes into the computer. All across Canada those who'd read the first book or heard about it want the next one. Think I better go into hiding somewhere to work on it? No ..can't the Festival of Writers Fall Fest is Nov.3 and there's lots of promotional and organizational work to be done. Check it out :www.festivalofwriters.com
Thanks for all of you who contributed to this site, making it interesting for the rest of the group and encouraging us along the way. I'm thinking of keeping it open, maybe with a slant towards economical travel tips. Any thoughts about that?
Love from the warmth of our home,
The Geriatric Gypsies and a much relieved Boo!:)

Welcome Vera to our community of people that love to hang out with those who are interested in the world of travel!

Here on the coast we've just been reminded of why owning an RV is a great idea. When the power goes out with the first of the winter storms, at least we have somwhere to go to with power and heat. For those of you without an RV, it's another reminder to have alternate sources of heat and cooking if electricity is your source. When they talk about having an emergency pack, they forget to tell people to also have a propane cookstove.

But today the sun is out like nothing ever happened. Is it like a woman who has a hissy fit(like Boo the menopausal van), then later turns around innocently with a," Whats the matter with you? I'm fine." We'll just enjoy the sunny day while it holds out, because us coasters know this is the beginning of our winter gales.

Enjoy each and everyday of life. Live it to the fullest. Great quote from Anderson Cooper, NBC journalist: "You don't have to know where you're going in life, you just have to take the first step and opportunities will show up." Or in the case of RV gypsies like us, just start driving, you never who you'll meet along the way.

love

Barb and Dave and  Boo who decided yesterday to not start again. What's with this girl?

Happy travellers in life everywhere!

It's been a while since I posted on the RV Canada site. That's because we are doing very little out-of-Powell River travel this year. This is our year to explore as many beaches and lakes around here as possible. We are so lucky to live where we can be at a fresh water or salt water beach with few people on it in less than 20 minutes. When we're not BBQ'ing on a beach we're BBQ'ing on our new to us deck that recycle built.

We are the proverbial "you can have what you want without much money" people. It doesn't just apply to our big cross Canada trips but we practice it in every aspect of our lives.

With the help of my friend the computer guru, we have redesigned my web site. There is now a section there for RV tips. I just posted a page on Preparation for a Fun Trip, and while most of the check list applies to RV'ing, some of the checks apply if you're leaving home even for a week. Go to: www.write2dream.com

For those of you out there who are travelling, we'd love to hear your feedback on budget travel and some of the creative ways you've been able to make it happen.

Till next time we meet remember ... Live each moment with passion and joy for this too will pass as will our loved ones; don't take them for granted.

;;)Long time since I posted on here but with the launch of the new book watch for more. Check out the home page for the new picture of us and our persnickety van Boo. She's the main character in the new book RV Canada With Boo The Menopausal Van to be launched at the Chilliwack Humdinger RV Show Mar.27,28. If you enjoyed our adventures as we travelled in 2007, you're going to really enjoy the book with its pictures...yes this one has colour pictures.

At the RV Show I will be speaking everyday on preparations for a trip: Before You Leave Home. The check list is in the new book and we will be using it as we prepare for our next adventure. June 1 we leave for the Great Northern Book Tour for four months!! We will be going up to the Yukon, into Alaska and then up to Tuktoyaktuk, NWT and over to Yellowknife before dropping down into northern Alberta where I was born. But this time we will have a video camera with You Tube capabilities so you will get real time footage...can hardly wait!!

So watch this site for more exciting news as the next 3 months flies by.

I am really interested in reading about your trip North.  I looked into going to Tuktoyaktuk but I couldn't find a summer route there by road.  Are you driving the whole way or flying from Yellowknife in.  I want to go for June 21 to see a midnight sun.  Look wards to hearing all about your trip!!!!

HI Susan,
There is no summer road into Tuk. We need to fly 150 km from Inuvik so we're looking for someone to hire us to go in..they just don't know it yet. But I'm a big believer in miracles so we're going to Tuk to celebrate with a bottle of our blackberry wine on the shores of the Beaufort Sea.
We figure we'll be in Dawson or Whitehorse for the summer solstice, haven't figured it out yet. Much will depend on lining up markets or book signings.
Its so exciting I can hardly wait! But first need to get this baby/book born.
Are you going to the RV show in Chilliwack?

No we aren't going to the RV show as we live in Salmon Arm.  My mom just passed away on the 14th of Jan so we have lots of work to do this spring  We were thinking of going North in 2010 or 11.  I want to thank you for your tips list you sent last spring.  We did make our trip across Canada last summer.   The weather could have been a lot better but we had a great time anyway.  The worst weather was in Newfoundland.  Lots of Rain and fog!  We saw a couple of the people you told us about and we were glad to have our bleech water along.  The ones I am taking about are the ones who clean their sewer hoses with the drinking water hose.  We stayed at a number of Rv parks that had very foul water and it wasn't till we got back that we found out about a water filler that goes on the tap just before the hose to your RV.  We bought one but it is not open yet as we didn't stay at any parks in BC that it was needed.
Well enjoy your trip and make sure you have lots of bug stuff.
Susan

Sure sorry to hear about your mom Susan; my condolences to you and your family. Death of a parent reminds us of our own mortality and why we need to not waste precious moments.

Glad to hear you made the trip. Don't we live in the best place on earth with the most diverse landscape and people? We had the worst weather in NL but the most interesting memories of all. My favorite place was at Cape Norman all by ourselves in this rock strewn land forgotten by time with wild flowers everywhere. 10 of 14 days were wind and rain, but still we want to go back.

A water filter would be a good idea, must add that to our to do list before June.

We have a stash of bug stuff but it makes me wonder if I'll ever be in shorts if the bugs are
that bad.

The announcement about the book will be in the Feb. issue of RV Times.

Stay in touch, love to hear from our fellow RV'ers.

Susan

HI Susan,
There is no summer road into Tuk.
Are you going to the RV show in Chilliwack?

;;)Long time since I posted on here but with the launch of the new book watch for more.

Dear Avril,
What can I say, some people just don't care but thankfully most do. Thanks for the bug tip, will take some along with us and try it. Maybe it will be a new tip for the next book.

Soon the book goes to print...YAHOO! !.

Not being an RV traveller I'm surprised that folk dont have more sense than to use drinking water for cleaning a sewer outlet - isnt there another way?(but then - what do I know?)

Barb - re bugs - take along some Absorbine Junior - even horseflies dont like that!

My condolences to the lady who just lost her Mum - just remember your happy times and enjoy your life -

I-)Dear fellow travellers through life!

Back home after 115 days and 14,493 km later. What a ride! What a thrill this great northern adventure! We are so happy we never gave up on our dreams. The result of such persistence and faith was being able to meet the people, experience northern culture, and actually stand in the Arctic Ocean at 69° north latitude.

For a complete story with photos go to: http://mytripjournal.com/rvcanadawithboo

We are proof that if you never never never give up on your dreams, you can make them come true in the most miraculous ways. Where will we go next seems to be the standard question on the streets as people welcome us home. There is still so much to see of Canada before we move onto the rest of the world. Our dream board is empty for now, but stay tuned for what we put up there very soon.

And disregard the spam that comes in periodically. Don't even answer it to tell them to stop because then they have you. Ignore it and I'll deal with it on the site.

Enjoy your day, fill it with joy and inspiration.

love

Barb and Dave and Boo who did misbehave on this trip.

:)Our next big trip is in the works as I work on the manuscript for the northern book. We will launch it next June back north of 60. It's so exciting to have 7 chapters of 14 complete and feel the tension building. Maps from Manitoba are being poured over with the dream trip to go to York Factory and Churchill, both inaccessible by road. Here we go again, another Tuktoyaktuk dream. Nothing like challenging yourself but I figure is Tuk came true by hook and by crook so will the Manitoba dreams.

I will post the link to my next articles in Snowbird & RV Travelers as soon as they are out. One about Toquart Bay on Vancouver Island and one "WInter RV'ing North of the Border." I figure its time we kept our RV dollars in the country instead of spending thousands across the line. Living on  the west coast  we meet many people from the rest of Canad that gets cold winters, and they've come here to "winter." Fun.

Stay tuned for tips on where to camp in the winter.

Happy trails.;;)

;;)41,437 miles of memories during four RV trips around Canada. We have been to every province and territory except Nunavut and it's still on the over flowing bucket list. As I sit here preparing a 30 minute presentation on our trips, it occurs to me how many stories 41,437 miles includes. I don't even know where to start. People ask me where is my favorite place in Canada besides our hometown Powell River. I can't answer because there are too many.:-?

Highlights? They'd include the Mackenzie River tour from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk, NWT; the 18 hour train ride from Thompson, MB to Churchill on the Hudsons Bay to see polar bears and beluga whales. Crossing Confederation Bridge to PEI for the first time had me jumping out of my seat. Exploring NFLD for 2 weeks in Boo the Menopausal Van left us wanting more. Exploring "North of 60" to the Yukon and Northwest Territories blew us away with its wild scenery, vast open spaces and complete silence. While there being taken to a First Nations medicine woman, and spending the afternoon eating bannock and listening to stories was a day I'll never forget. And I haven't even touched the dozens of people stories from all the farmers markets we've sold at.

The memories go on and on for every province and territory and we want more. This year we'll pick blackberries and can them for the next big trip. Brandied blackberry sauce is a hot commodity. I'll get the fourth RV Canada book written for the spring of 2013, then we'll go back across Canada to explore the eastern side of NFLD in time for lobsters by the end of June. This year we'll stay close to home.

My point of all this rambling around the country? If you dream of seeing more of your country but don't think you have enough funds to make it happen, think again. Get creative. Anyone can travel and work or sell at the same time IF their dream is a priority. In my books, I give you tips on how to do so. They are available at: www.write2dream.com

Don't wait untill all the lights are green at the same time. It won't happen ....except on the main street of Yellowknife. Death, illness or accidents cut short millions of dreams so get on with it! My 44 year old son went from thinking he had it all together to a car accident Sept.5/11 that left him a quadrapalegic. It changed all of our lives forever.

Write down your travel dreams. Put pictures up on a dream board. Set a date to make your goal, then work towards it but never, never give up.

Happy trails.
