"If we restrict Swami to merely His Form, then we are bound to feel sad. However, such sadness is our own making, for what right do we have to restrict Him who is transcendental to a mere form?", says Prof. Venkataraman.

My Experience & Kind Request To Support For A Social Cause - Sai Devotee Shifana

Every devotee of Lord Sai Baba gets unique experiences that they are very much insisted to pen down them and share with world at large through this blog. I would certainly thank devotees, but far more than that i thank our Lord Who is always active for His devotees. See today's experience and a message which the devotee wants to convey to us.

Sai Sister Shifana Ji from India says: Dear Hetal Ji, I am Shifana from Chennai. I came across your blog, when I was surfing for Sai devotee’s experiences. From the day, one believes me or not, I am really stuck with your wonderful work. From the deepest of my heart, you are doing a great-great-great job in bringing Sai devotees together in giving them space to share and write their real experiences in the right place (Web), where millions could reach out and gain knowledge from it, reading them brings us even closer to our Baba.

I would like to share my experiences with you all. I kindly request you to post my experiences on your blog. This is my first post that I am sharing.

I never knew about Baba, nor have seen Him even on picture. But once my cousin mentioned about Saibaba, but it never entered into me. In 2008, my aunt took me out and I was never told where we were heading to. Finally we reached the place. It was Sai’s temple and that was the first time I saw Him. I was telling Baba that “I really don’t know who You are God. It’s the first time I am seeing You and I don’t know anything about You”.

The Below article was written by Shri.Bishu Prusty, Alumni of SSSIHL and who works now in Radio Sai Global Harmony in Prasanthi Nilayam.

During the Sorrow and Grief on April 26th'2011, Sai Devotees showed everyone the True Value of Seva and Service where each and everyone helped each other, Bhagawan's Divine Message of Seva and Service was seen everywhere:

......I walked out of Sai Kulwant Hall into the streets of Puttaparthi. The endearing scenes of caring and moving instances of devotion that I witnessed that day remains evergreen in memory. It was as if love was virtually flowing in the streets of this holy hamlet. Everyone was out to help the other.

If there was a shopkeeper doling out cookies to everyone standing in that never-ending serpentine queue, there was another generously handing out butter milk in plastic tumblers to anyone who was thirsty. The third was a middle-aged Mohammedan with the characteristic white cap on, who along with his sweet daughter was gladly serving spiced rice to every pilgrim standing in the rows.

Suddenly a dynamic man met me and lovingly invited me to go along with him; he wanted to show me something. Once I reached his house I saw how he had created a big cooking area beside his home where food was being prepared continuously. I was moved. I took a few pictures and thanked him for his love.

As I continued to walk I noticed a youngster panting for breadth; I took him out of the queue, arranged a place where he could rest and then promised him that I will be back soon with some medicines.

I had actually walked far beyond the hanuman temple, little further the area where the usual Saturday vegetable market happens. My hunt for a medical shop brought me all the way almost to the Gopuram gate as except Appollo Pharma no other shop was open that day. I ran back to him having procured the tablets. Fortunately he was still there in the same location and was delighted to receive the pills. I moved on.

The queue did not seem to have an end. People were sad, dejected, tired and restless too. The PM's visit had only added to their woes; the lines had stopped moving for quiet a while. Many asked me, “Can we have darshan? We have come from so far...”, “When are they going to close Mandir? Can I see Swami today?” and so on. Softly and sweetly I assured them that each one was definitely going to see their beloved Swami.

Then I noticed some very senior members of the Sri Sathya Sai Trust, Kerala having a tough time in the queue. They were people whom I have been seeing for years in Mandir verandah. I felt sorry for them. “Come with me please,” I said to them and escorted them to Mandir through some short-cuts. Somehow everywhere there was an obstacle the police were very cooperative with me. It took half an hour to drop them inside Mandir premises through Ganesh gate but it was worth it. I was satisfied.

I returned to the streets and corners of Puttaparthi. And then I saw one scene which is ever fresh in my memory. There were a group of Sai Youth from Andhra who had set up a temporary kitchen and were serving fried rice and curd rice, and there was this boy shouting at the top of his voice, with the entire energy of his vocal chords, pleading people to have Swami's prasadam. His passion to see that no one went hungry because of grief or unavailability or any other reason moved me to bits.

In every lane and bylane, home and hearth, shop and godown, there was this overpowering stream of camaraderie and kindness. Even though my heart sank with sorrow whenever I thought of Swami, I consoled myself saying, “At least I am doing what Swami would have liked me to do – helping someone in need and documenting this touching saga of Puttaparthi. The only way I can mitigate my sorrow to a little extent atleast is by service... That is what His life was all about and that is what my life should also be about...”

And the next day when the final ceremonies of His body were done I cried and cried copiously.

But whenever the tears stopped I remembered the incense sticks. Even now whenever grief grips me those thin fragrance-exuding martyrs inspire me. Life, they say, is worth living when it is lived for others just like my Swami did, smilingly year after year for more than eight decades. We can then shine as sparks of His love and our lives too would become sublime and serene, fragrant and vibrant.

This video presentation was made by the devotees of Bhagwan Baba from the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation , JAPAN .... it depicts the hardships faced by the victims and the immediate service rendered by the devotees to them ...

The mind precedes all (actions); the mind is the chief; all (actions) are mind-made. If a person speaks or acts with an impure mind, sorrow follows him… But if a person speaks or acts with a pure mind, happiness follows him even as a shadow that never leaves him.“, says Buddha in the opening verses of the Dhammapada. Love and Compassion is the theme of this year’s Buddha Purnima Celebrations in Prasanthi Nilayam attended by devotees from Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, Bhutan, Nepal, Thailand, Sri Lanka, China, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and Indonesia. The programme commenced with Veda Chanting by youth of the participating countries.
Buddha Purnima Celebrations
Sri Ashok Sakhrani, national coordinator of Sri Sathya Sai Organisations, Hong Kong welcomed the gathering for the Buddha Purnima celebrations. He spoke on the four sublime qualities of the mind that have taught by the Buddha, namely Maitri (Loving Kindness), Karuna (Compassion), Mudita (Sympathetic Joy) and Upeksha (Equanimity). The Chairman of Zone 5 of the Sri Sathya Sai Organisations, Worldwide, Sri Nari Chugani spoke on the similarity between the connection that millions felt towards Lord Buddha and Sri Sathya Sai Baba and their teachings of Peace, Love and Purity.
Buddha Purnima Celebrations
Dr Sunanda, a Professor from Sri Lanka and a consultant of various United Nations and World Bank Projects, spoke next on his initial confusions on following Bhagawan’s path, since he felt he would be deserting Buddhism. However Bhagawan’s Love helped him to see the similarity between the teachings of the Great Masters. He mentioned now his spiritual progress accelerated once his Sadhana was suffused with his love for Bhagawan. He also quoted an alumni of Bhagawan’s university in Sri Lanka who on questioning what is the Sadhana one has to do, pointed to Bhagawan’s photo and said, sing His name and Love Him. That will suffice.
Bhagawan has given us a challenge, he said and that is to continue to Love Him when His physical form is not available to our senses. ‘Let us Love Bhagawan until our love also becomes perfect with His Divine Grace. This day is the Buddha Purnima of Prince Siddartha. One day when we perfect our Love to the level of Love of Buddha or Sri Sathya Sai, that is our day of Buddha Purnima!’, he concluded. The talks were followed by international Bhajans by the devotees.
The evening session of Buddha Purnima Celebrations commenced with Vedas by devotees from Zone 5 led by the Japanese delegation who have impressed Bhagawan on various occasions with their diligent learning of the Vedas.
Buddha Purnima Celebrations
Sri Ashok Sakhrani then provided the highlights of the various activities undertaken by Zones 4 and 5 of the Sri Sathya Sai Organisations, Worldwide in the last one year. It included Sri Sathya Sai Education in Human Values training to 50 schools in China and Hong Kong along with the translation and new materials published in the said topic, regular Narayana Seva to the homeless and the needy, building of 3 mosques, 323 water tanks and 86 homes in Indonesia, health care centre, old age home, orphanage drinking water projects in Nepal, medical camps and schooling in Sri Lanka for the children affected by the civil war, HOPE (Honour our Parents everyday) programmes in Malaysia, SSSEHV training in Thailand apart from what the Sri Sathya Sai Organisation has developed a reputation for worldwide, Crisis Management. The help rendered by the devotees in Thailand, Indonesia and Japan instilled confidence in mankind among the beneficiaries.
Buddha Purnima Celebrations
Sri Sakhrani then introduced the Dance programme by Children from Thailand. The beautiful presentation was on the theme ‘Know Thyself: Life is Bliss when Truth is Realised.’ The children where dressed in traditional costumes of China and India and danced in Chinese style to an Indian song, bringing out the harmony in diversity.

Buddha Purnima Choir by Zone 5 Devotees

This presentation was followed by a choir by Zone 5 devotees on the theme ‘Bhajans and its use in daily life’. The choir consisted of various Bhajan medleys in English and Japanese. The conductor speaking in Japanese conveyed her gratitude to Bhagawan. Gifts were distributed to the participants and prasadam was shared with the assembly even as the international Bhajans were in progress. Arati was offered at 1840hrs.
Buddha Purnima
Celebrations
After the conclusion of Darshan, the devotees arranged an Abhishekam to Lord Buddha which is believed to ward away bad karma. All the members of the pilgrimage participated in the same.
The next evening, Sri Ashok Sakhrani welcoming everyone for the concluding session of the two day programme thanked the organisers and office bearers for their support in the successful completion of the programme especially for the Naryana Seva held yesterday. He then introduced the speaker for the evening, Dr. Periera.
Buddha Purnima Celebrations
Dr. Periera focused on the similarities of the teachings of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba and Sri Sakyamuni Buddha. He stressed on the immense compassion shown by the Avatars with many examples. The talk was followed by a drama on the great eastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami titled ‘Adrishtam’. Visuals from Japan were played in the backdrop (See top of page) even as actors performed in front of the screen. The skit contained various incidents of Love of mutual help, Compassionate Love, Love through Vedas, Love melting closed minds and Water God’s Love. It was indeed a moving presentation.
Buddha Purnima Celebrations
Sri V. Srinivasan, the all India president of the Sri Sathya Sai Organisations congratulated the participants on even converting a disaster into an opportunity for Seva. He said how he was humbled by the great work of the Japanese Volunteers. Speaking with conviction, he reminded everyone of Bhagawan’s assurance that He is with us during our joy and sorrow but above all He is with us when we are doing selfless service.
Buddha Purnima Celebrations
With Bhagawan’s blessings all the pilgrims were given special tokens of Love. Prasadam was distributed to the assembly. Arati was offered at 1830hrs.

Sairam Sonya ,

Thank you for sharing this incident - Yes very true Swami is our true friend.
Similar incident happen to me when I lost my wallet with all credit cards
including my citizenship and sin cards- I ran from the College Campus parking
lot to secuirty then to lost and found nowhere I could trace my wallet. Looking
lost and disoriented- only help which came from my heart is to call Swami- when
I retraced back to parking lot what did I see ?- lo and behold just in vacant
parking spot my bulging wallet was found as if Swami dropped it just beside my
car. Inexplicable - Yes Swami is our dear friend - He is always there for us -
He will never forsake us - Never Never.

Love for the Lord should not degenerate into fanaticism and hatred of other names and forms. In the current times, this type of cancer is affecting many eminent people; you must do well to avoid it. Believe that all who revere the Lord and walk in fear of sin are your brothers and sisters, your nearest kith and kin. Their dress or language or skin colour or the methods they adopt to express their reverence and fear to the Divine are not at all important. Sugar dolls are valued for the sugar, not for the shapes given by the manufacturer, be it elephant, dog, lion, cat, rat, jackal or whatever. People buy the sugar doll for its sweetness, not the shape. So too, people are drawn to the same God, as He is sweet and grants bliss.

Sai Baba Helps In Making Our Faith Towards Him Strong - Anonymous Sai Devotee

Lord Sai Baba knows when His devotee particularly want Him and on exact time He enters life of His devotee. This experience of today explains us this fact.
Anonymous Devotee from India says: Dear Hetal Ji, thank you so much for providing such a platform for sharing Leelas and Kripas of our beloved Sainath. I am writing you for the first time, but how can I dare to express the Leelas of our Sadguru Shri Sainath Maharaj. Still I am writing. Please don’t disclose my name and mail id and let me be the anonymous and sorry for writing such a long experience.

I can’t consider myself to be an ardent devotee of Sainath Maharaj, but still I trust Him and have a very strong faith on Him. I am very new to Baba (just few months back may be in the mid of November, 2011) and now had realized that Baba wanted me to worship Him with faith. He drags me towards Him and made to pray each and every day. My mother worships Him (although my whole family worships Bajrang Bali and He is our Kul devata) and once she had completed her 9 Thursday vrats (as she had heard about the vrat). On the last Thursday (i.e. 9th Thursday), I was in office and got a call from my mother to see her in the Deva’s Temple in the evening. The Temple of Baba is not very far from my house, but I don’t know the way to get there as I haven’t gone there before. So I was searching. I called my mother and she was telling me the way to reach there. I had searched about 30 minutes in the evening, but I couldn’t find the temple that day (that time I didn’t have faith on Baba).

Swami asked somebody,Do you know how to live a long life?  Do you know the secret of a long life?

"Swami, I dont know.
Swami said " Its very easy. "
What is it, Swami?
Swami said " Only two things are needed".
What are they?

Bhagawan said, " One is sacrifice and the other is love or prema.  Sacrifice and love will give you long life. Thyaga or sacrifice is the medicine, while love is the diet.  If we take the medicine without following the diet, the disease will never be cured.  If we follow the diet without taking the medicine, we are nearer to the grave.  Unless we have the diet and the medicine together, the disease cannot be cured.  So the medicine of sacrifice and the diet of love ” both are necessary to live a long life.

Swami gave an example from the United States  Rockefeller.  Today, in the United States there is the Rockefeller Foundation.  This charity is working all over the United States.  How did this come about?  Rockefeller was fabulously rich -- very, very rich.  He had no time to think of anything other than making money.  He reached the stage where he forgot the amount of money he had because he was so busy.

But Rockefeller fell sick at the age of about 48.  And the doctors said, “Look here, you are not going to survive for more than eight or ten months.  You are not going to live much longer.

Who said this?  His doctors in the United States spoke this.  Doctors in the U.S. are very, very responsible, to the best of my knowledge, because they will be sued in the courts of law if anything goes wrong.  Then they would have to pay money throughout their lifetime, oh yes -- so they have to be very responsible.

So those doctors said," You won't live very long".

So Rockefeller started distributing his money to everybody. Educational institutions, medical institutions and many others all over the United States, with the result that he lived for almost 90 years.  A person, who should have left this planet earth 40 years earlier, got an extension of his life.  How is that possible?  Because of his sacrifice.

What is required today is for our hearts, which are hard like stone, to melt. Even stones wither and become ordinary sand with continuous exposure to rain and heat.  Similarly, our hearts of stone should melt, seeing people's misery, so we will be prepared to sacrifice.

There is a distinct qualitative difference between Bhagavan and all the other spiritual leaders one can think of. Bhagawan himself was once asked about this, and he replied, “I have descended from the level of God to the level of man in order to uplift man. Others are humans trying to raise themselves up to the level of god.” Despite this emphatic declaration, in the olden days, devotees often used to request Baba to take them on a pilgrimage to holy places. And the embodiment of compassion that He is, Swami often yielded to such prayers.

One such historic visit was to the holy shrine of Badrinath, nestling in the majestic Himalayas, the abode of Lord Shiva, the home of sages, and the destination of pilgrims through the ages. We turn to the account left by revered Kasturi, of that trip.

Below is the Link to a Wonderful account by Shri.Kasturi on Bhagawan's Trip to Bardinath, this is from the archives of Radio Sai :

Does Bhagawan require a letter to get tuned to a devotee’s problem? Answer is a firm “No”. All knowing God that Bhagawan is, He does not require a letter from a devotee to get to know his problem. Letter to Swami was this modern-day Avatar’s uniqueness, yet another sign of His supreme munificence. Before the letter reaches Him, even before the letter is written, our Bhagawan knows the contents in a devotee’s heart.

Prof. N. Kasturi writes how he personally witnessed such an incident inside the interview room proving Bhagawan’s omniscience. Extracted from Sanathana Sarathi June 1960.

Narayana: Narayana is the Lord of Water; (naaram means water). But, what is the water of which He is the Lord? He resides in the heart, and His presence when recognised melts even the stoniest heart and the water emanates from the eye as tears of joy, gratitude and fullness! His Presence is said to have been recognised by man, when he is suffused by sympathy, making him sad while another is sad and joyful when another is filled with joy. Narayana is He who brings tears of joy to the eyes! That is the function of your tear glands: to express internal joy; not to weep like a fool or a coward. - Sri Sathya Sai

“Your letter has not reached Me yet; but, I have read it already. You posted it to Madras, not knowing that I have come back here. I was near you when you wrote it. Your mother must now be very much better; is it not?” This is what Baba wrote to a devotee, some years back. He is Sarvantaryami; He is in all places, at all times.

Our letter did not reach Him. Even when it reaches Him, He need not open it and read the contents!

One day, I happened to be in His room when the post came. When He dropped on the floor one letter unread and unopened, some newly arrived person muttered, “Swami, you have not read that letter. It may be some tale of misery.” Baba smiled and said, “No, No. It is a tale of joy, He says that a son has been born to him; but, he is worried that the baby was born with frontal teeth.” Then, He told us the whole story with the envelope in His hand.

“A Vaisya couple from a village in Telangana had come on a pilgrimage to Puttaparthi a year ago; they prayed that they may be blessed with progeny. I gave the man an apple and asked him to share it with his wife. He took it in his hand and examined it. Finding some marks on the skin, indicating that it might have been bitten by a rat or so, he asked Me what it was, evidently nervous about eating it. I told him that they both could eat it. ‘Only, the baby will have two frontal teeth at birth. Don’t worry.’

He has now written that the child has been born and, (here, He tore open the envelope, took out the letter and turning over the lines showed us the very sentence) “he has asked Me whether any shanti has to be performed, to alleviate what he fears be a calamity!”

Looking at that sentence, we stood amazed, in the resplendent Presence of Bhagawan.

Baba is Sarvajna, Sarvasaktha, Sarvaantaryami.

BombaySrinivasan sent you a video: "SRI SATHYA SAI BABA video - Miracle home near Dharmakshethra.mpg"

There is a very vast colony of improvised hutments opposite Dharmakshethra, where thousands of poor people are living. Passing through few narrow lanes, we reached the small dwelling of a couple. On the shelf fitted on the wall, was a small photo of Bhagavan Baba, and heaps of sacred Ash (vibhoothi) formed over it. The excess vibhoothi was falling down. From this heap of vibhoothi, many manifested objects are taken out, such as, idol of God and goddess, a pair of wooden Padhuga, and Shiv Lingams etc.

With this Aradhana Day, it is ONE full year, and lo! What glorious manifestations had been happening in this humble dwelling, almost on every festival days. Hundreds of devotees are thronging in this small home, to see for themselves the Divine manifestations. They offer prayers and sing bhajans. This little hutment dwelling is fast becoming a pilgrim center, very near to Dharmakshethra.

The manifested items are very large in quantity, and it is very difficult to create and post such large Album. I am putting them in a video form, and shall post them separately, very soon.

For the sake of those who wish to visit this Holy Spot, here is the address:

People prefer to burn the sandalwood tree for sale as charcoal, as they do not know the value of sandalwood. The goals people set before themselves, are to win comforts and peace. That surely is the proper thing to do, but they stop after this step in the journey, mistaking the pseudo for real. One believes that if they get two full meals a day, a few yards of cloth to wear and a roof over their head with a few sundry superfluities, they have reached the goal in life! They may have certainly reached a milestone, but the joy one derives from that milestone is paltry. This joy is mixed with grief and it easily turns into pain; it is harmful to others and has in it, some pride, envy, malice, greed and other harmful ingredients. Do not neglect the grand opportunity and take this life to be just human. Dedicate this life to discover the immortal Self present within you.

A Couple of Sai Baba Experiences - Part 181

With ever flowing grace of Lord Sai Baba, here are few more experiences of devotees with Him.

Why Fear When I'm Here

Anonymous Devotee from UAE says: Dear Hetal Ji, I and my husband stay in Abu Dhabi in UAE. You are doing one of the best deeds in the world by spreading Sai Baba’s miracle through this blog. I and my husband are the strong believer’s of Sai Baba. Every time when we come to India, we go to Shirdi. Please do not share my name or email ID.

When I came here with my husband, we were shown big dreams of business from my family people saying that if you invest this much money, you will get triple profit of it. So my husband sold his business in Mumbai and had come to Abu Dhabi. After few days, we came to know that we were cheated by my family members. We had lot of money, but everything was finished. My husband, who was a business man in India, had to do a job of 2000 dirham. I, as a house wife, had never worked also started doing a small job, where I was tortured a lot. I use to sit near Baba’s picture and cry every day, but Baba never listened me.

mannar_sai

If man believes in the Fatherhood Of God, then he is bound to follow His precept “All Are One…” fulfilling His dictum, acting upon it, by being “Alike To Everyone…”

Quoting Bhagawan’s precious gems on service to the co-inhabiting world of creatures, Ms. Mercini Sheratt writes about the supreme significance of doing service to animals and other creatures, bringing in interesting tales of rare instincts of love and gratitude shown by the co-existing world of creatures.

“Foster the tiny seed of Love that clings to ‘me’ and ‘mine’, let it sprout into Love for the group around you, and grow into Love for all mankind, and spread out its branches over animals, birds, and those that creep and crawl, and let the Love enfold all things and all beings in all the worlds.  Proceed from less Love to more Love, narrow Love to expanded Love.” (Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 8, ch. 16)

Once, when presented with seva projects for human beings, Bhagawan said: “What about the animals?  They need help too.  My love embraces the animal kingdom as well as the human kingdom and so should yours……….it should not just be limited to human beings.” (source: Dr. Narendranath Reddy,UK medical conference, September 2011).  To another devotee, He has said, “Real Seva is animal seva”.

Bhagawan tells us that we can learn many good qualities from our animal friends and below, you can see a remarkable act of kindness by one of them:

“Two blind people wanted to drink water at the RagiGudda temple, Bangalore. When they were unable to operate the tap, this mother monkey opened the tap for them, allowed them to drink water, drank some water herself and then closed the tap before leaving the scene.”  (extract from an Indian newspaper)

Please note well!  If a monkey can do this act of kindness for human beings, then can’t we humans also do this for our animal brothers and sisters?  Many people do feed stray animals and wild creatures and birds,  while many more never think of it…………..but hey, what a shining example this monkey is to the human beings who don’t ……she is clearly not ‘speciest’ like many humans or prejudiced against members of other species in need.

No life can be sustained without water or food.  This applies to all life forms and while humans suffer terribly when they do not have enough water to drink or food to eat, so do our fellow creatures……..especially in extreme weather conditions such as the intense and simmering summer heat of summer or freezing winter. And the love and care that we give towards those in animal form is never wasted for the same atma flows through us all.    As Bhagawan says:

“When you love and look after an animal, you help to lift the whole of creation.  If you cannot care for an animal, then at least feed the birds and wild creatures.”

While they may not be able to thank us in words, those who have fed and cared for animals, wild or domestic,  have often experienced their loving gratitude in other ways.  Our love attracts their love and helps us to realise the Oneness behind all forms.

A small example of this occurred at the time of the passing away of Lawrence Anthony, a highly regarded and remarkable conservationist and environmentalist who could communicate heart to heart with elephants.  He had been particularly successful in taming and ‘normalising’ a herd of wild, traumatised and rogue elephants, ‘delinquents, every one of them’ in Zululand, South Africa.  Although he had not seen the elephants for 15 months as he had had to distance them for their own safety, on the day that he died without warning in March 2012, the whole herd appeared out of nowhere and stood silently outside his house as if to pay homage to the human being who had so loved and understood them.  We know that elephants mourn their loved ones and to them, he had become a beloved family member. Somehow, on their jungle telegraph, they had intuited that he had passed away.

A kind and loving soul who has kept a small animal sanctuary for years told me the following story:  Alerted by her dog’s barking one day, she found a wounded baby pigeon beside him which had fallen out of a tree.  She rescued and hand reared it while it lived with her and her other pets for about five weeks……………..then one day, it was ready to leave and join others of its kind.

For 4 years it lived freely, often in her garden.  She could tell which pigeon it was because it recognised its name and was not afraid of her dog, with whom it had lived before.  Then one day, it appeared at her patio door, very sick, walked in, greeted her, the dog and the resident crow in turn and then went into its old cage which was still there.

It settled down and the next day, quietly passed away.  It had come home to die where it knew it was loved and safe.   A few days before it reappeared, she saw the outline of a pigeon on her window pane………..photo below………..rather like an angel bird……………perhaps an omen of what was to come.

An old neighbour of mine used to feed some badgers every night, as indeed many people do……….and I know, because I saw it with my own eyes, that these badgers would announce their arrival in the dark by banging on his patio door.  The food was then served and once they had finished it, they would bang on the patio door again, indicating that they would like a second helping!……..Their visit and their playful antics gave him such delight that it was not a one-way giving……..

“When a devotee seeks with humility and purity to give seva and prema to My creatures who are in need of such selfless service and sublime love;  when he considers all creatures as My children, as his beloved brothers and sisters, as the blessed manifestations of My immanence, then in fulfilment of My role as Sathya Sai,  I descend to help, accompany and carry that yogi.  I am always near such a yogi to guide him and to shower my love upon his life”.

When Australia had a horrendous heatweave in 2009, something happened that had never happened before……….Koala bears, dying from thirst, emerged from the bush and approached human beings asking for   water, so desperate were they to drink that they overcame any fear of humans . ……..luckily, some humans obliged as can be seen in the pictures below…….

They entered houses to drink and ended up cooling down in baths…………..

Like Sathya Sai Baba and Shirdi Sai Baba, St Francis, the Christian saint,   felt great tenderness for the whole of creation.  He not only fed poor and vulnerable people but always fed the birds and other creatures around him too.  At Christmas, he asked the local government to make sure that all the animals around were really fed well, especially ‘my sisters, the larks’………..

Another love-filled soul, Ramana Maharshi, attracted to him through his love, not only human beings but all kinds of animals and birds who also made their home in his ashram.   He even allowed the squirrels to make nests for their families behind his pillow.   Daily, he used to ask “Have the lads been fed today?” referring to the dogs.    At dinner-time, the dogs had to be fed first.  ……then, the beggars and then the devotees….Here, he is, feeding a monkey:

Shirdi Sai, in His love, was happy to share the food on His plate with stray dogs ………..We know how many times He scolded His devotees when they behaved harshly towards a hungry animal and how many times He manifested in that animal form to teach them that God dwells in all forms and to have the same love and respect for all of them.

As everyone knows, our own Sathya Sai Baba loved and kept many animals over His lifetime and there are many stories in which His great love for the animal kingdom is clearly demonstrated.

Lastly, Mohammed, in one the Hadiths, tells the story of an adulterous woman about to be horribly punished.  However, her sin was forgiven her in Allah’s eyes when on seeing a very thirsty dog, she took off her shoe and filled it with water from a well for the dog to drink.  This act of kindness more than compensated for any past wrongdoing.

Anyone deciding to feed stray animals should take note of the fact that onions, garlic, coffee, raisins, grapes, beans, chocolate and some other foods (lists are available online) are dangerous for dogs and cats. While dogs are omnivores and can eat anything, cats are carnivores (sorry! – God made them like that!) and although they may eat anything when very hungry, really need their own kind of food…….  Birds generally eat seeds and nuts.  Water provided should be clean.
