DIVINE INSPIRATION

I am the Mother that gave you My life
and have beared its separation.

'Tis a pity, My child,
for in each birth you forget Me,
and I remember -
after each death, you remember,
and I forgive.

The Most Powerful ' Three - Words '

The following three-word phrases can enrich every relationship. These are just three little BUT VERY POWERFUL words!!!

I'll Be There
If you have ever had to call a friend in the middle of the night, to take a sick child to hospital, or when your car has broken down some miles from home, you will know how good it feels to hear the phrase " I'll be there. " Being there for another person is the greatest gift we can give. When we're truly present for other people, important things happen to them & us. We are renewed in love and friendship. We are restored emotionally and spiritually. Being there is at the very core of civility.

  I Miss You
Perhaps more marriages could be saved & strengthened if couples simply  & sincerely say to each other "I miss you." This powerful affirmation  tells partners they are wanted, needed, desired & loved. Consider how  ecstatic you would feel, if you received an unexpected phone call from  your spouse in the middle of your workday, just to say "I miss you."

 I Respect You / I Trust You
Respect and trust is another way of showing love. Its conveys the   feeling that another person is a true equal. If you talk to your children as if they were adults you will strengthen the bonds & become  close friends. This applies to all interpersonal relationships

Maybe You're Right
This phrase is highly effective in diffusing an argument and restoring   frayed emotions. The flip side to "maybe you're right" is the humility  of admitting maybe "I'm wrong". Let's face it. When you have a heated argument with someone, all you do is cement the other person's point of   view. They, or you, will not change their stance and you run the risk  of seriously damaging the relationship between you. Saying "maybe  you're right" can open the door to further explore the subject, in  which you may then have the opportunity to get your view across in a  more rational manner.

Please Forgive Me
Many broken relationships could be restored and healed if people would  admit their mistakes and ask for forgiveness. All of us are  vulnerable  to faults and failures. A man should never be ashamed to own up that he  has been in the wrong, which is saying, in other words, that he is  wiser today than he was yesterday.

I Thank You
Gratitude is an exquisite form of courtesy. People who enjoy the companionship of good, close friends are those who don't take daily   courtesies for granted. They are quick to thank their friends for their  many expressions of kindness. On the other hand, people whose circle of  friends is severely constricted often do not have the attitude of  gratitude .

Count On Me
A friend is one who walks in when others walk out. Loyalty is an essential ingredient for true friendship; it is the emotional glue
that  bonds people. Those that are rich in their relationships tend to be   steady and true friends. When troubles come, a good friend is there  indicating "you can count on me."

Let Me Help
The best of friends see a need and try to fill it. When they spot a  hurt they do what they can to heal it. Without being asked, they pitch   in and help.

I Understand You
People become closer and enjoy each other more if they feel the other  person accepts and understands them. Letting your spouse know in so  many little ways that you understand them, is one of the most powerful  tools for healing relationship. This applies to any relationship.

Go For It
We are all unique individuals. Don't try to get your friends to conform  to your ideals. Support them in pursuing their interests, no matter how   weird they seem to you. Everyone has dreams, dreams that are unique to  that person only. Support and encourage your friends to follow their  dreams. Tell them to "go for it."

I Love You
Perhaps the most important three words that you can say. Telling  someone that you truly love them satisfies a person's deepest emotional  needs. The need to belong, to feel appreciated and to be wanted.Your  spouse, your children, your friends and you, all need to hear those  three little words "I love you."

Sai Inspires - 2nd February 2007

It is most important to understand the role and the value of the human body. It is the body that shelters the Divinity within. The body is like an iron safe used for storing jewelry and other such valuables. In the case of the body, the valuables stored are good feelings, good thoughts and virtues. If lost, they cannot be recovered easily. Only virtues lend value to human life, and it is qualities like compassion, forbearance, and sacrifice that make human life precious.

- Divine Discourse, 17th May 2004.

Body is the temple of God. - Baba

CHAPTER 62

Life, will, one day, make its final exit with its excuse of death, leaving the one's attached to lament their loss of dependence.  The weak pillars of attachment that you lean upon, will, eventually, crumble, and your distress and dismay will bury you, too, bringing the hopelessness of an abrupt end.  The tears of loss can only be dried, when one learns to live and accept the loss as his spiritual gain.  I say this, because it is man's nature to seek the holy feet, only when the ground of delusion cracks under him to swallow his existence.  Yes!  It is then, when he panics - it is only then, when he fears his deceitful deeds - it is then that he realizes that the source of his happiness is merely the poison that has slowly gnawed and nibbled at his most precious gift - the gift of his divinity!

Once you have called upon the self - it will emanate from within it's biggest gifts of peace and joy, giving one stability and security in the biggest of sorrows.  Peace is the weight, My child, that will balance both happiness and sorrow in one pain - reacting with indifference to both and desiring none.  Man, in his ignorance, forgets that all through this journey to reach God - God is at all times, with him, in him and around him.  The man that makes the vacation his home, will pay dearly for his stay, and in his ignorance of self inflicted suffering of worries, will lose the privilege of residing in his permanent home.  Any other, will serve you only temporarily, as long as you will handsomely reward him with some kind of payment - the mother, on the other hand, will serve you with no motive, other than her selfless love for you.  Every enticing diversion must be resisted by the enforcement of one's self discipline - for the one that turns away from My path, will return, one day, only after he has been robbed of all inner strengths.  The tears of hopelessness and desperation will, once again, awaken within him the love for God that will bring him back to the same point on the path on which he had left.  With so many breaks in your journey, how can you, My child, even remember the purpose of this walk?  Keep the rest stops to a minimum, and know, O child, that the one that stops you in this pilgrimage, is not the true love.  The one that fills you with the guilt for loving God is, himself, guilty of the sin of being possessive.  The one that grabs your time away from Me, is none other than another mask of Mother delusion.  It is hard to admit to yourselves that the one you believed to be the giver of love was nothing but the taker and possessor of your internal peace.  Leave behind all those who use emotion as their weapon to bind you.  Do not be entangled in the webs they weave - leave them in My care and continue your walk of prayer, alone, leaving behind the mind that worries.

The one that you abandon for Me, has automatically become My responsibility.  When I say abandon, I do not ask you to give up your duty - I ask you to give all that you have, yet stay delinked by accepting no payments in return.  Once you have accepted dues for your services, you have been obliged to remain attached, and attachment will not let you love, My child!  Wake up, and see the crack of dawn - live in the bliss of the light, and close your eyes at dusk so that you will never know nor experience darkness, ever!

One minute makes a difference
When running for the train.
One car will change your day
If you're in a crowded lane.

One sentence works a wonder,
If it's needed to be heard.
One deed brings a person light,
As does one kindly word.

One meal is often missed,
One crime means doing time,
One shoe is always searched for,
As is, at times, one dime.

But the greatest One of all,
Be it parent, teacher, friend,
Is the one with you when you're down;
Beside you to the end.

Subject: Did Sri Saibaba sacrifice his life to save Tatya's life? (part 2)
leedharart
Send Email Send Email

As Ramachandra Patil and Bala Shimpi feared, Tatya fell seriously ill as the
Vijayadasami of 1918 approached. Baba too fell ill around the same time.
Tatya’s condition worsened day-by-day and turned critical one or two days
before Vijayadasami. He could not even come to the mosque for the darshan of
Sri Saibaba. One day Baba sent word to him to come to the mosque and have
his meal there, but as Tatya could not summon enough strength to even rise
from his bed, some devotees helped him to go to the mosque where Baba fed
him with semolina pudding with his own hands despite his ill health. Tatya
could only swallow a couple of mouthfuls with great difficulty. Baba told
him, “Tatya, I have arranged for two swings (carriages) for us initially.
But I have changed my mind. I alone will go on now presently. Now you may go
home.” Tatya understood the import of Baba’s words and started sobbing. He
said, “Baba, why do you not send me first?” Baba replied, “I am a fakir,
there is no one to cry for me when I go away. But all your people will
grieve if you go.” Tatya heard the tone of finality in Baba’s words and his
sorrow intensified and he started weeping piteously. He said, “Baba, if I
go, it is only my relatives who will grieve. But if you go, you will make
many people of this world orphans. If you live on many people will attain
salvation by your mere darshan. What of me? My life is a burden to me and to
my relatives too.” Baba would not brook any further talk in this vein from
Tatya. He scolded him lovingly, “Alright, no more talk from you. Go home.”
He put udi on Tatya’s forehead and sent him home, watching him with a heavy
heart until he was out of sight.

The day of Vijayadasami dawned and Baba entered mahasamadhi. Tatya’s
health astonishingly started improving a few hours after Baba’s mahasamadhi
and fully recovered in a couple of days.

The people believed that Baba had sacrificed his own life to save
Tatya’s. Hemadpant brings this out in the 42nd chapter of Sri Sai
Satcharitra. “It seemed that they both (Baba and Tatya) exchanged a life for
a life and a death for a death. The people believed that Baba had sacrificed
his life for the sake of Tatya. Baba alone knows whether this is true or
not. In this manner Baba had stated Tatya’s name but indicated his own
mahasamadhi.” It was not surprising that the people believed thus seeing
that Baba had loved Tatya more than his own life itself. But this is just a
blind belief on their part and in fact has no foundation. This is because
Baba has clearly stated that he had first arranged for two swings
(carriages), one for himself and the other for Tatya. But he had changed his
mind and sent one swing back and that only he will be going away. He did not
say that he had got only one swing ready for Tatya and that he would be
going in that instead of Tatya. Tatya also only requested Baba to send him
first but not to send him instead of Baba.

to be contd......

Sri Sai Amrit Vani
1st Feb 2007
                              Devotees may forward this
letter to other Sai devotees.
Jai Sai Ram
Every week I narrate the Leelas of
Baba which I see happening at Sidhartha Extension New
Delhi. It is a miracle that nothing happened on 1st
Feb, inspite of being Thursday. In fact my Uncle
expired on 29th Jan and our house was in ‘Sootak’, We
expected this thing and already communicated to the
members of the group that Sri Sai Amrit Vani will not
be held at Sidhartha Extension on this Thursday and
the next Thursday. Such things had happened earlier
also when my cousin expired and also when our grand
daughters were born, there was no Udi, no honey, no
Leela of Baba. So today I will list out what we missed
instead of what happened.
                Very few dovotees attended the
recitation of Sri Sai Amrit Vani, only about 25 or so,
as the message was already given.

This Thursday the 1st Feb we missed the
following Leelas of Baba, which usually happen on
Thursdays.

1. No oozing of Udi from any photo on the walls or
photo or Statue in the Mandir. No formation of any
word or figures of OM, Ram and Sham
2. No water from the Charans this week.
3. There was no Pooja done, no Aggarbatti, no diya, No
books. Only recitation of Sri Sai Amrit Vani was done
with the help of Cassette.
4. There was no Udi in the Lap of Mrs. Gupta
5. There was no Bhog offered to Baba.
6. No Documents, photos , Sai Satcharitras were kept
in the mandir room. In fact no one entered the mandir.
7. No Prayan of Sai Satcharitra was done.

No pooja will be held on next Thursday also.

Sri Sai Bajan Sandhya has been arranged on
24th Feb in the evening at Sidhartha Extension.

           However following devotees, participated
in absencia in the recitation of Sri Sai Amrit Vani.
The list is sorted as per their email id’s. However
Mrs. Gupta prayed for all the devotees. We include
only those devotees in the list, who themselves recite
or read Sri Sai Amrit Vani at their places. The names
of the devotees “for prayer”, are prayed for, but not
included in the list. Kindly mention clearly, against
each devotee’s name that he/she will recite or read or
listen to Sri Sai Amrit Vani, or only for prayers, If
no mention is made in the letter, then it will be
presumed that the names are only for prayer and will
not be included in the list. Please also give the
name of the place.

Scripts of Sri Sai Amrit Vani are available
in Tamil, Telgu also, besides in Devnagri (Hindi) and
English, in the file section of the yahoogroup. Links
of Audio MP3 files are given in the link section of
the home page of ‘ mysaibaba20’ yahoogroup. To go to
home page of yahoogroup key in or click
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mysaibaba20 .

This activity of Sri Sai Amrit Vani will be
in addition to any other pooja or sewa or prayer that
you are doing.

          Jai Sai Ram.

> Once upon a time, there lived a merchant in a far away village in
India. The man owned a young donkey and as the animal was full of
life and energy, he was put to the toughest tasks. Years after, the
donkey had grown old and a little `gaga' senile. Whilst he was
looking down an empty well, he fell into it. He yelled for help.
>
> "Master! O! Master! Take me out! I have fallen into the well!
>
> The merchant came with his wife and his sons. They were followed by
all the villagers who moved by curiosity, did not want to miss the
event.
>
> The merchant looked down the well and gasped:
>
> " There is no need to pull out the wretched animal; he is too old
to be of any use; the well also is old and has dried up; let us fill
the well with earth so that our children may not, by accident, fall
into it; at the same time, we will bury the old donkey."
>
> "Master, please don't bury me alive! Remember all the work I
performed for you, day and night. I carried bundles and bundles of
provision and luggage, your wife to the market and your children to
the village school on my back" cried the heart-broken donkey.
>
> It was in vain. He could not move the heart of his master. Well,
ain't it in the nature of some people to forget the seva that we
render to them? Fortunately, God does not forget our good deeds .Good
deeds are always rewarded.
>
> To come back to the story, the merchant, his wife, his sons and all
the villagers got hold of a spade and they started to throw heaps of
earth over the donkey. The donkey wept in silence, but in his heart,
he kept repeating: `Sai Ram! Sai Ram! ' (The name of God). As the
earth fell over the donkey each time, it slipped over his old, weary
back and dropped at his feet; instinctively, each time, he climbed on
the heaps. He continued to climb until he finally reached the top of
the well and walked away under the flabbergasted eyes of all. By the
Grace of God, he was saved!
>
>
>
> The morale of the story is God never forgets. Man may forget and
even bury us alive with dirt and filth when we are of no use to them.
God remembers always and the more people try to bury us alive, the
more we climb up in our esteem because God knows the goodness in us.

· Did Sri Saibaba sacrifice his life to save Tatya's life?
Further; Sri Saibaba is an incarnation of god whose birth, growth and
death is tied with the karma and salvation of many devotees. Baba had saved
many devotees from death and indeed had even brought back alive many who
were dead too. To save Tatya from death was an easy task for him, it was not
necessary for him to sacrifice his own life to save Tatya’s. As Hemadpant
stated, he may have, in his natural cryptic style, indicated his death in
advance and said Tatya’s name instead of his own. The feeling of the people
that he had sacrificed his life to save Tatya mirrors their belief that he
had indeed loved Tatya more than his own life.

Please go through the article from Saipatham July – August 2001 for more
details:

Sri Ramachandra Kote Patil fell seriously ill in 1916. All types of
medication were tried but were found to be futile. Everyone thought that his
early death was inevitable. He too was resigned to his death and waited with
dread for the day. One night Baba presented him with his divine vision and
said, “Do not fear. I have stopped your death. You will get well soon. I am
only worried about Tatya. He will die in 1918 on Vijayadasami day, but do
not reveal this to anyone, especially Tatya. If you tell him this, it will
only serve to terrorise him before his death.” Amazingly Ramachandra Patil
started to recover his health from the very next day and attained his former
good health in a few days. He was an intimate friend of Tatya and knew that
Baba’s words were unalterable and had to come true. He realised that Tatya
had only two more years left in this world and was engulfed in sorrow. He
could not keep this burning anguish within himself for long and shared the
secret divulged by Baba with his friend Bala Shimpi alone.

to be contd......

Om sairam to dear Sai family,
Puttaparthi is back to what it used to be after the arrival of HER beloved Son, our beloved Swami. There were quite a few overseas devotees waiting for Swami and against all the rumours  of Him flying to whitefield, Swami arrived to Parthi. The whole puttaparthi was thrilled and all the roads were beautifully decorated

All of us were eagerly waiting for the news and also some feed back as what went on in Chennai and what Swami felt about His visit.

It was announced that Mr.Giri, former Vice Chancellor of Swami’s University would give a talk about the recently concluded Ati Rudra Maha Yagna this afternoon (Feb 2,07). This afternoon Swami came for darshan around 3:45pm. His face was  shining like the radiant sun, no trace of tiredness what so ever, after the successful completion of yet another Yagna..

The car drove to the dias and Swami got down from the car and with the help of the boys, walked upto His thorne on the dias. We all were eager to hear about the Chennai visit, which was very much unique. He probably didn’t stay that long in any other venues other than Kodai and whitefield. The yagna had lots of new and interesting audience and the discourse given by Swami on 21st Jan did create tremors in the politics of Andhra Pradesh.

To non followers of Andhra Pradesh Politics, there is one region named Telangana which is claimed to be backward and been neglected by governments for many years. Many politicians make this as their political agenda especially during elections and promise to develop the region. In the year 2001(if iam right) a political party by name Telangana Rashtra Samithi, consisting of UNEMPLOYED POLITICIANS from various parties was formed, with sole  objective of dividing the state of Andhra Pradesh into Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Swami in His 21st January discourse, while speaking of Unity and its importance made it very clear amidst many high profile politicians that bifurcating  Andhra Pradesh into two is worse sin which created political tremors and to politicians whose bread and butter (for their political career), was Telangana didn’t agree with Swami’s views.

Mr.Giri, after taking blessings from Swami started to share his experiences about Yagna and some intimate moments during Yagna.

Excerpts from the talk,

Revered elders, brothers, sisters and my dear students. I offer my humble salutations, gratitude to Swami for blessing me to be with Him and witness the Ati Rudra MahaYagna and also thank Him for giving me an opportunity to share my views to this gathering. Its happy to be back here in Prasanthi Nilayam and one of the ashramites felt that its been a while since Swami left Parthi and the separation was difficult.. Its for the first time that Swami has stayed in Chennai for so long.

We left here on 19th. Swami went to Mr.Karunanidhi’s (chief minister of Tamil Nadu) house on 20th January to bless his family and spent quite a good time with the family. All the family members were very happy and even the media carried photos of Swami and Mr.Karunanidhi very happy and joyous.

And the same day the Yagna was inaugurated. There were thousands and thousands assembled there. The yagnasala was as big as Kulwanth  hall and there was another hall of equal size to accommodate devotees and there were equal number of devotees stretched upto 1km to just have a glimpse of Swami.

The next day (21st Jan) there was a public meeting, a felicitation by chiefministers of 3 states and various union ministers and above all the citizens of Chennai thanking Swami for providing them pure drinking water. The meeting was unique with 3 chief ministers, setting aside their political rivalries, water disputes etc, there were 3 union ministers, Mr.Lalu Prasad Yadav Minister for Railways, Mr.Shivraj Patil, Home minister, Mr.Maran, minister of Information Technology and 2 other governors presided over the meeting.

Mr.Karunanidhi was very happy to meet Swami and to participate in this function. He addressed Swami as if we address God. He being a atheist, since child hood, said I have no doubt Swami is God in human form.  Chennai is surrounded by states which have abundant Tanni (water in tamil) but we had only kanni (tears) and no water.. Its because of Sai Baba alone that the government of Andhra Pradesh  has agreed to provide water to Chennai. Many people asked me as what I gave to Sai Baba when He visited my house and I said I have given my heart to Him.

Later Mr.Maran, Minister of Information technology, shared an intimate moment with Swami. When Swami went to Karunanidhi’s house, Swami materialized a golden ring for him and PWD minister ( I don’t remember his name) who was standing next to Swami asked for a ring for himself and Swami materialized another ring to him and all of us were eagerly waiting as what Swami will give to Mr.Karunanidhi and Swami turned to Mr.Karunanidhi and said, I have given my heart to you.

Later Mr.Giri continued, Swami in His discourse stressed on unity of man kind.(Mr.Giri almost got close to what Swami stated about the Telangana issue but avoided )..

Later Mr.Lalu Prasad Yadav, Minister of Railways said, I don’t believe in babas or saints. But I have met Sathya Sai Baba only 2 times and I can confirm that He is GOD himself. I like His activities.. and His message. His words have message and that message is put into practice.. His message of unity is very special and that it why you see this many chiefministers and minister on one stage.

Mr.Giri continued, the Police chief while briefing the security arrangements to the chief minister, the next day said that we have arranged so many public meetings and functions but this is unique and there is lot to be learned from this meeting..

The crowd were huge but were very disciplined. Thousands and thousands attended the Yagna and thousands used to stand by the road while Swami’s convoy passed by… There used to be rain of flowers and the roads beautifully decorated. After the car passes by people used to rush to collect the flowers lying on the road.Swami once said, because you see me every day you don’t quite understand the significance of darshans. Look at this people, they are happy atleast if they have glimpse.

One day there were doctors who came in hundreds to the yagna sala. Coming to know the free medical service rendered to the poor by Swami all the doctors resolved on that day that all the  63 major hospitals in Chennai city would have one free bed for ever, to serve atleast one poor patient free of charge. One hospital also came forward to  provide free medical treatment for all the volunteers of Tamil Nadu. Very shortly this free bed system will be introduced in the whole state of Tamil Nadu.

Speaking of the Chennai Youth, Mr.Giri said, about 2500 youth were involved in this Yagna. They worked day in and day out for succesfull completion of this Yagna. The inventory was maintained very well.. There was no shortage of any thing. The youth was appraised by one and all and the police had nothing to do courtesy of our volunteers and well behaved devotees.

There were quite a few dignitaries like Rajni Kanth, Vijay kanth(both film stars) and Sachin Tendulkar (living legend of Indian cricket). After meeting Swami, Sachin went on to score 60 runs and 100 runs (all of us including Swami smiled), where as before he (Sachin) had many ducks (zero runs)…

The hour long talk by Mr.Giri ended with a Tyagaraja keertan and as he went back to Swami for His blessings Swami said something to him and he had to comeback and continue his talk

Swami also reiterated that in Unity lies strength. There should not be any more divisions. You should not go on dividing India into smaller states (loud applauds). This will create problems. All should be united.. Mr.Giri ended his talk

Thus Swami reiterated His stand on United Andhra Pradesh, United Humanity… Let His message of Unity be reached to one and all and Iam sure, He is going to speak more on UNITY in the forthcoming discourses…

It was 5:15 by then and Swami asked for Bhajans and my favourite Bhajan Gaja Mukha GajaMukha Gana natha was sung and we all were immersed in the melodius bhajans and with the Lord Himself, before us…

Thank you Swami… No other life will be as Sweet as this.. to sing your glory in your immediate presence.. Arathi was given at 5:45 and our beloved Swami stayed for the whole arathi and our compassionate Lord raised both His Hands to bless us…… those longing devotees who missed Him..even though it was only for dozen days.. but  the separation was still painfull….

THANK YOU CHENNAI FOR YOUR HOSPITALITY…. MAY SWAMI BLESS US ALL…..

He Takes Care of Everything…Welfare and Farewell

By Dr T. Ravi Kumar

This is the transcript of the talk delivered extempore by Dr. T. Ravi Kumar in the divine presence of Bhagavan Baba during Dasara Celebrations on October 1, 2006.

Prayerful Pranams at Bhagavan’s Lotus Feet. Most Beloved and Dearest Bhagavan, Respected Elders, Brothers and Sisters.

Faith is Trust Without Reservations

hippo 2 spacer
Dr. Ravi kumar speaking in divinity's presence

A couple of days back, Bhagavan was speaking about Education and Educare. He said: “Educare is drawing out from within. There is a well within which contains the water of Bhakti (devotion). Draw out these life-giving waters of Bhakti with a container. For this, you need a rope. This rope is Faith.”

What is faith? Faith is not belief without proof; it is Trust without reservations. Many people say that God should give us experience; then we will get faith. But Swami says: “You have faith; I will give you experience!”

How is it? He says: “You say, ‘I want to learn swimming first’ and then jump into water. But I say, ‘Jump into water and I will teach you swimming.’ Bhagavan tells us the importance of having faith. Faith is to believe that there is God; and that God cares for each and every one of us.

Rather than speak to you about just these philosophical truths in abstract terms, let me illustrate it with incidents which I have had the privilege of seeing – as a ringside observer.

The Sorry Tale of the Scalpel

In the year 1966, my father had a very serious illness and he went to the doctor. After examining him, the doctor found that he had cancer. So he said, “You must get this operated.” The doctor was an FRCS; and a great surgeon – besides being a costly one too! He said, “You get this operated and it will all be fine.”

So my father got admitted in a hospital in Bangalore and the first surgery was done. After this, it looked like everything was okay for a month. But when he went for getting himself checked up, he found that the cancer had not stopped and it was continuing. The doctor with the same air of confidence said, “No problem! One more surgery.” So, one more surgery was done. And after that again it was the same story.

This continued not once; not twice; not thrice; not five times; not ten times; but twenty five times! After twenty five times this famous surgeon lifted up his hands in defeat and called my sister – who was then in the final year of her MBBS – and said, “Look here, as a professional to a fellow professional, let me confess – the knife has failed! It cannot cure cancer! I have done all that I can do. And medical science as it is practiced today knows only this.”

My sister was in the final year and the doctor said, “Take your father home. In matter of few days, he is going to pass away. So there’s no point in keeping him here in this atmosphere of phenyl. Take him home; let him die peacefully amidst you.”

My sister was heartbroken because we had already lost our mother when we were very young. I was only four and a half years old when my mother passed away. And when this happened, I was barely nine years old. That afternoon after getting my father discharged and bringing him home, my sister went to the college, and she was naturally very gloomy. It was then that the sun rays of God entered our lives.

‘No new God is going to save me.’

hippo 1

There was a classmate of my sister who was a devotee of Bhagavan who asked her, “Why are you so gloomy today?” And when she told this, she said, “Come, let’s go to Whitefield – Bhagavan is there; He is God and He will save your father.” So my sister went with her to Whitefield; she had Swami’s Darshan and returned.

In those days, there used to be just one bus going to Whitefield (from the Bangalore city) – it was the number 99. It used to come only once in a while; so when she arrived home it was quite late. Then my father asked her, “Why are you so late?” My sister said, “Father, I have seen God. Today I went to Whitefield and I saw Bhagavan. He will cure you. Come, we will go to Whitefield. But my father said, “All along my life, I have been very sincere; I have been worshipping God and if that God is not going to save me – no new God is going to save me.”

A couple of days later there was a phone call from the office (where my father worked) saying, “Please report to the office because you have not come for six months and we don’t know whether you are alive!”

So father went to the office. The director asked him, “How are you?” And after speaking to him for some time he said, “Thyagaraj, there’s a gentleman who has come from abroad who wants to see someone called Sai Baba. I don’t know anything about the place where He stays. Since you know Bangalore well, why don’t you take him with you? The office car can drop you at home on the way back.”

Because it was his boss’ request my father was compelled to go. They didn’t know anything about Darshan timings. They just went to Brindavan. When they were entering the outer gates, Swami had finished His Darshan and was entering the inner gates of Brindavan. My father felt terribly devastated – whatever little hope he had was shattered! He said, “Even God has turned His back on me.”

But anyway, the other gentleman said, “It is so peaceful here; let us stay for some time and then go.” And so they sat under a tree. A few minutes later, the inner gates opened or should I say, ‘The gates of heaven opened!’

‘Your cancer is cancelled!’

hippo 2

Swami came out and He walked briskly towards where my father was sitting and He started speaking something. My father thought it was for the other gentleman; ‘I am not a devotee’, he said to himself. We have such distinctions; Bhagavan has no distinctions like this. But Swami was speaking in Kannada so my father heard it. Swami said, “Why did you have twenty-five operations?” My father sat up! Swami said, “The doctor is saying that you will die; he has given you only few days. You will not die! Your cancer is cancelled!”

This was in the year 1968 and my father was alive for thirty eight long years! He died a couple of months back when he was touching 89 years - out of old age.

I am telling you this incident because Swami is so kind. He says: “I will give you what you need to have Faith in Me; have sincerity”. And He gives us the experience. After this, my father came to Swami and he was at Swami’s feet serving in Prashanti Nilayam – in Brindavan first, and then in Prashanti Nilayam.

Father’s Stirring Faith

A couple of incidents which showed me what kind of faith Swami expects. It was one Dasara day like this; I had just joined Brindavan College as a student of the pre-University class in the year 1974. One day before the Narayana Seva, normally the students know - we take out the bundles of dhotis which come in pairs and we cut them and pack them in bundles of twenty five or so.

A few of us were doing this upstairs in the Mandir here. Swami was walking around and talking to us. He came to me and asked, “Has your father come?”

I said, “No Swami.”

He then asked, “Is your father coming?”

I said, “No Swami.”

He said, “Ah! How can you say that?”

I said, “Swami, he is scheduled to have an operation today in the morning; so I am sure he won’t come.” Swami said, “No, No. He is coming! And when he comes, ask him to stay with you in the hostel.”

I am talking of the time when there were hardly any buildings; there was only one row of buildings here. When the work upstairs got done I came down. When I came he had reached Prashanti – my father was walking in with his luggage! I was stunned. I asked him, “How is it that you are here? What about your operation? Did you not have your operation?”

He said, “No, No. I had my operation today in the morning!” I asked, “Then how is it that you are here?” He said, “I couldn’t miss the opportunity to have Swami’s Darshan, so I got discharged and came straight from the hospital.”

I was stunned and asked him, “Father, there is no accommodation here. Don’t you think you will get infection?” He said, “Infection? Swami’s Darshan will take care of everything! He will provide me accommodation.” Then I remembered and I said, “Yes! He has provided you accommodation. He has told me that you were coming and He has told me to take you with me and make you stay in the hostel.” When we have Faith in the Lord; the Lord is the most faithful. He takes care of us so much.

There was another instance which I remember – this happened in the year 1971 – even before I joined here. I was in the bal-vikas of a Samithi (centre) called Ulsoor Samithi and they wanted to have a drama in Swami’s presence. So they had asked me to be a part of it and I was getting trained. One week before Dasara, when our half-yearly exams exams were announced, I noticed that all the exams were exactly during the Dasara time. So I told the Bal Vikas teachers, “I will not be able to come for the drama.”

Making the Right Choice

hippo 2 spacer

They were very shocked! When I went home and told this to my father, he said, “No! You are going for the drama!” I said, “Father! I have exams!” “Exams don’t matter – they keep coming every year,” my father said and continued, “But this chance to go near Swami comes rarely. Don’t miss it – go ahead! This is the most important thing; have faith in Swami and do what He tells you.”

We are a joint family and nobody else knew much about Swami at that time – many of them were teachers and they told my father, “No! You are spoiling his education.” My father said, “No! This is the true education! The more closer you go to God; that is true education. I want him to go closer to God.”

So we came to Prasanthi Nilayam. I would just like to tell you one instance of how things were in those halcyon days. When we landed at 2:30 pm in what was called the ‘pata-shala’ block at that time, the bal-vikas teacher called me after a few minutes and said, “Go to the Mandir and find out what time is the Darshan.”

When I opened the door; Swami was standing outside! Swami had come to see whether all the bal-vikas children were housed properly. I was so stunned! Swami came inside and sat and spoke to us for forty five minutes! So we finished our drama in Prashanti Nilayam; and Swami blessed us and sent us back.

When we returned home after Dasara, I went to one of my classmates and said, “Please tell me what exam we have today so that I can read and come.” He said, “What do you mean exams? All exams have been cancelled! The government has sent an order that they want to have some Dasara sports – so all exams have been cancelled.” – Not even postponed!

So this is the way God takes care of you. And when He takes care of you; He takes care of your welfare – and as Mr. Popat said - your farewell! How does Swami take care of you?

God's Arrangements – Always in Perfect Alignment

Brothers and Sisters, let me narrate to you how kind Swami is. When you have God with you; when you reach out to God; you get all the happiness in the world. When you get God; you get everything. Like the person who climbs the real coconut tree; gets the real fruits and the shadow fruits; when you reach God, when you go to God, you get everything.

During my visit to Parthi at Guru Poornima, events so arranged themselves that I had to stay back for a few days. This was the only time – in all the thirty two years that I have been in Brindavan – that I stayed back even after all the students had left. Swami had created a circumstance by which I stayed for one week after all the students left - looking after my father; meaning, I cooked for him. I knew very little of cooking but he insisted I cook everyday and he would say I cooked very nicely!

I was leaving – it was a Sunday. He came to me and said, “ Ravi, I want to get you a pair of clothes.” I said, “Why?” He said, “You looked after me so well!” I said, “It’s my duty! Swami has given me true education and this is the basis of that – Matro Devo Bhava; Pitro Devo Bhava (Mother and Father are embodiments of God) – so I have to do this.” He said, “Let me at least pay for the taxi.” I said, “No Father! This is also my duty. Serving you has given me so much of joy – that is enough for me.”

hippo 2 spacer

And then I left for Brindavan. This was on Sunday evening – on Tuesday morning my father had his bath at 4:30 in the morning; came for Suprabhatam and came for Vedam. After Vedam, he went back to the room and had his breakfast. He told my sister, “I am going for Darshan.” He was staying on the second floor and as he was coming down; he met somebody on the first floor. He told him the same thing, “I am going for Darshan.”

He came to the ground floor, turned towards the Mandir, prostrated looking at Swami’s Residence and said “Sai Ram!’. There can be no greater death than this!

Somebody came and told my sister, “Your father has fallen!” She took a glass of water and went thinking that he had fainted. But when she sprinkled there was no reaction. Sister was dazed! And when she looked up she saw two people carrying a stretcher and coming – she had not even asked for it! And while they were coming, an ambulance had just come to park in front of our house!

God’s arrangements are always like that. Perfect! When Swami takes care of you; He takes care of your welfare; and your farewell too!

Swami, you have given me so much in life that one life is not enough to serve Your Lotus Feet. How many ever lives I have; let it be spent second by second in Your service - till the last breath!

Jai Sai Ram!

SAI RAM Dear Brothers and Sisters,
(continued fromearlier submission)
The Eligibility criteria or the Prescription for  Immortality  as  declared by Our Scriptures   should  be understood by us  clearly   and  followed not only in letter but also in spirit if we desire Immortality and  if we  do  NOT want to undergo the pangs of Birth and Death again.
Says Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita-----
"Those mortals who know Me as birthless and without beginning, they will not be deluded and they are freed of sins.  He who understands My immanence and My creative power, gets established in Me through unfaltering devotion: of this there is no doubt. The wise people,  by  keeping Me always in their thoughts, their lives surrendered to Me,always speaking of Me and enlightening each other about My greatness, remain ever contented taking delight in Me. To such people who are ever devout and steadfastly worshipping Me with Love, I confer the power of discrimination(yoga of wisdom) which then leads them to Me. Those who set their hearts on Me, and worship  Me with faultless devotion and faith, the path  of Love(Bhakti Marga) leads sure and swift to Me. Those who, with their senses subdued and mind serene, and striving for the good of all beings,  seek the Transcendantal Reality, unmanifested, without name and form, beyond the reach of feeling and thought , they too will surely come to Me. Those for whom I am the  Supreme Goal, who do all work renouncing their ego to Me, and meditate on Me with single-hearted devotion, I will swiftly rescue them from the cycle of birth and death as they merge in Me. Oh Arjuna, stll thy mind in Me and without doubt thou shalt be united with Me. In case  you lack the will for such self-discipline ,  then engage thyself  in selfless service to all around you, for selfless service can lead thee at least to Me.Those who seek Me in Love and faith as life`s Eternal  Goal go Beyond death to IMMORTALITY".
Let us try to do some thinking on these teachings of the Lord.  Probably,  a  self-audit is called for.  The check-list for the audit has been given above  and in the previous submissions.
(to be continued)
With Loving Sai Rams,
G.Balasubramanian

Thought for the day as written at Prasanthi Nilayam

February 3rd, 2007
Sai Baba picture -Thought for the day as written at Prasanthi Nilayam

Today man is subjected to untold suffering because he lacks human values. That which has the innate capability to burn is called fire. In the same manner, only the one with human values is a human being. One bereft of human values is not a human being at all. You may be highly educated and occupying an exalted position, but if you lack human values, you will be considered inhuman. Hence, drive away evil qualities in the first instance.

Curb the Power of Desires

If a house is set on fire, it is violence; if Hanumaan sets fire to Lanka, it is justifiable retribution and a good lesson. If a dacoit cuts off your hand, it is himsa (injury); if the doctor amputates it, he saves your life and it is ahimsa (non-injury). Daksha yajna (ritual sacrifice) was converted into a battle because Parameshwara was not present; the Kurukshethra battle was transformed into a Yajna because Parameshwara (Lord Krishna) was present there. Arjuna dedicated himself at the Lord's Feet; Daksha scorned the Lord. It all lies in the bhaava (the motive) and the inspiration behind the act and the word. Vishaya vaasana (attachment to sense objects) makes an act low and Bhagavath vaasana (attachment to God) makes it sacrosanct.

Do not waste your valuable time in condemning someone's faith or attracting people into a new faith. Always engage in fostering the positive attitude in spiritual effort. Do not use harsh word when referring to another's faith as faith is a precious plant and harshness might make it wither. Know the truth and experience the Aanandha (bliss).

First cleanse your own minds and then start advising others. Earn mental peace and strength for yourself and then try to secure them for others. Learn the secret of lasting happiness yourself and then endeavour to make others happy. Be yourself what you tell the other man to be. People will follow only the man who speaks out of personal experience.

The first step in spiritual training is to curb the Icchaa shakthi (power of desires) which prompts the senses to pursue objects. If the iccha (wish) is for God it is good; if for objective pleasure it harms the individual. Ashaanthi (confusion and turmoil) is due to the multiplication of wants and desire for sensual pleasure instead of spiritual contentment.

You miss your sahaja (natural) qualities i.e., prema, shaanthi, sathya and aanandha in the complex tangle of artificiality which is a-sahaja i.e., hate, falsehood, grief and greed. Activities like the earning of wealth, reputaion, fame and publicity result in suffering. Karmas are divided into vikarma (intentionally done) and akarma (without any intention to gain the consequence). The latter will save yourselves from suffering.

Do Naamasmarana in some set manner with full faith and pure heart. Your mind is steady when it is engaged in other activities but begins to waver when it is focussed on God. Have the Naamam (God's Name) on your tongue, the Ruupa (Divine Form) in your eye and the Mahima (Divine Glory) in your heart which helps to tame the mind and stop its vagaries. The repetition of the Name of the Lord will keep out evil tendencies and wicked thoughts and it will help to radiate love all round you.

Pray the lord and seek his grace for Jnaana bhiksha, Prema bhiksha, Bhakthi bhiksha, Anugraha bhiksha (alms of spiritual knowledge, love, devotion and grace). Get the doctor who would assure, "here-after your will not fall ill" and not the doctor who gives some relief to the present attack.

CHAPTER 63

The imperfect traits that lie within you, will follow you anywhere - no matter how much you run away, it will catch up to you, eventually.  It will reveal its embarrassing company, shamefully depicting its uncontrolled behavior, leaving you unrestful even in the midst of your journey to seek peace.  It hates to be ignored - it detests to be silenced - it rebels upon your rejection.  Do not make the futile attempt of concealing them - the one that hides, will always remain tempted to peep!  Face their whiplash, My dears, and remain unbruised.  Uproot their behavior by not allowing even one seed to germinate.

The integrity of a neighborhood can be maintained by keeping one's own house clean.  One will always remain helpless in maintaining the cleanliness of another's home.  Do not enter those homes that will leave their dirt upon you feet.  Know, My child, that the cleanest homes will show the smallest amount of dirt.  Welcome those who respect the nature of your home and attempt to cleanse themselves before they enter.  Be aware of those who are cynical and laugh at you, blaming you with obsessive behavior.  The one that has made the landfill his home, will, naturally, find your behavior insane and ridiculous.  They have become the worms that feed upon dirt - learn to bear them, My dears, and spare yourselves from unnatural spite.

I am the sacrificial giver in the good - to the taker, My dears, I remain a baffled mystery.  It is only the one that himself plants the rose plant and nurtures its daily needs, that will experience the joy, when it's first rose blooms.  To the others, it is just another rose plant and to them, the beauty of the bloom will not register any joy in their hearts.  Know, My dears, that your spiritual disciplines will remain meaningless to another, for he does not experience nor can he appreciate your efforts that are put.  Each one is on his own - each one's inspiration is his own self - each one's reward is his to keep.  Each one faces the attacks of their own weaknesses, and each one must develop their own strengths.  The pilgrims on the journey are bound to part at some point - do not get attached to each of them and lose the purpose of your undertaking the journey.  Learn what you can - ignore what you must - help and serve them at every opportune moment - make their presence significant by absorbing their goodness - and be brave, My child, when its time to say goodbye.

All are one, My dears - yet all have sunk in the pods of differences.  Save yourselves, first, My dears, and only then will your hand pull out the others that are panicking from drowning.  Help yourselves  by changing, first - the change, My child, will help the others, automatically.  One can never be a hero or a leader, until he shows the strength to be able to sacrifice, first.  The needy, My dears, look for those who are self-sufficient.  Be sufficient by catering only to the needs of the self - the needs of the self are only self-fulfilling!  All other needs, will only make you a beggar, a robber or a restless scavenger.  Your hopelessness can burn in the flame of your faith in Me - your hopelessness will die, My child, once I am the only survivor within you - your home is where I lie as the roof!

BABA AN EMINENT DISCIPLE

A fakir, Jawahar Ali by name, who was a resident of Ahmednagar, came
to Rahata, along with his disciples. Choosing an open space near the
Veerbhadra temple, the fakir set up his camp there. But the fakir was
really very fortunate. Had it not been so, how could he have had such
a famous and delightful disciple as Sai?

The fakir was very learned. The Quran-e-sharif was at the tips of his
fingers. Many people - some selfish, some spiritual, and some pious
and faithful - became his followers. He began constructing an Idgah.
Some time went by; he was then accused of defiling the temple of
Veerbhadra. Then the construction work of the Idgah came to a halt
and the fakir was driven out of the village. From there he came to
Shirdi and stayed with Baba in the mosque. The Fakir was a sweet
talker. The whole village adored him and people said that he had cast
a spell on Baba too, and charmed him completely. 'You be my disciple'
said he to Baba, and Baba, with his playful disposition, assented.
The fakir was delighted and took Baba out of Shirdi.

With an eminent disciple like Baba, Jawahar Ali became the guru. Then
they both decided to go and live in Rahata.

The guru did not know his disciples marvelous ways; but the disciple
knew the guru's short-comings. But never did the disciple show
disrespect, thereby observing the duties of a good disciple. Whatever
command came form the guru's mouth, proper or improper, was obeyed,
no sooner it was given. Baba even served His master in various ways.
Thus the days passed in service of the Guru. But then it so happened
that though they would come to Shirdi off and on, their main stay was
in Rahata. The loving devotees of Baba in Shirdi did not like Baba
staying away from them in Rahata. They thought that by yogic powers
the Fakir had bound Sai to himself, whereas Baba's plan was
altogether different, it was His way of destroying the ego. The
villagers were greatly agitated in their minds to see Shri Sai so
much in the power of Jawahar Ali and were in serious thought as to
how he could be won back.

As gold and it's lustre, as lamp and it's light, so was the
inseparable state of this guru and disciple. And they both had this
experience of Oneness. So they went in a deputation to bring Baba
back to Shirdi. When they met Baba near the Idgah and told Him the
purpose of their visit, Baba said to them that the Fakir was an
angry, ill-tempered fellow, he would not leave Him and that, they
should better go back to Shirdi without Him before the Fakir
returned. While they were thus talking, the Fakir turned up and was
very angry with them for trying to take away his Disciple. There was
some hot discussion and altercation, and it was finally decided that
both the Fakir and Baba should return to Shirdi. After a few days the
Fakir was brought in the presence of Guru Devidas, who was dispassion
incarnate and a dhayani. He engaged the Fakir in a religious debate
in Shirdi and exploded all his misconceptions. Thus Jawahar Ali was
worsted and fled from Shirdi. He went and stayed in Vaijapur and
returned to Shirdi after many years and prostrated humbly before Shri
Sainath. All his misconceptions about himself being the guru and Sai
his disciple, were dispelled and by repentance he was purified. Baba
also accepted him with respect, as before.

Such were Baba's inscrutable ways! The issues got resolved when the
proper time came. In this case Sainath showed by His conduct and
practice, how one should get rid of egoism and do the duties of a
disciple to attain the highest end, viz., self-realization.

There is no better state than that one should completely surrender to
one's guru, or that one should totally accept the disciple as one's
own. Without this relationship one cannot cross the ocean of worldly
life.

Bow to Shri Sai - Peace Be to All

Thought for the day as written at Prasanthi Nilayam

February 4th, 2007
Sai Baba picture -Thought for the day as written at Prasanthi Nilayam

You see, hear, and experience many things in this world. They are nothing but the reflection, reaction, and resound of your inner being. All that you see in the outside world is actually a part of you. Consider this example. There is someone who hates you. Actually it is the hatred in you that has taken the form of hatred in him. In the same manner, adulation or denigration, good or evil are reflections of your own self. Whatever you see in the outside world, whatever you experience, be it pleasure or pain, has in fact come from within you.

· When and where the First Ever Saibaba Mandir was constructed?
The first Saibaba temple was constructed at Bhivpuri in 1916 when Sri
Saibaba was still in his physical body. Bhivpuri Road is a small railway
station which comes before Karjat on the train route from Mumbai to Pune.
If one gets out at this station and looks right towards the fields, a temple
spire is clearly visible. This is the Sai temple at Bhivpuri. It is a short
walk across the fields to the temple.
This temple was constructed by late Sri Keshav Ramachandra Pradhan.
Please go through the article published in Saipatham magazine January 2001
to find out the story behind the temple construction.

Sri Saibaba has become a part of the mainstream of Indian spiritual
and temporal life within a short period of attaining mahasamadhi. We can now
see Sai temples not only in the big cities but also in small towns and
villages of India, and more and more temples are being built. In this and
subsequent issues we will investigate the details and stories behind these
temples, built not only in this country but also abroad. The Sai temple
built at Bhivpuri 1916, when Sri Saibaba was still in his physical body.

Bhivpuri Road is a small railway station which comes before Karjat on
the train route from Mumbai to Pune. If one gets out at this station and
looks right towards the fields, a temple spire is clearly visible. This is
the Sai temple at Bhivpuri. It is a short walk across the fields to the
temple.

This temple has a very interesting history. The story behind its
construction reveals the astonishing manner in which Baba pulls his devotees
to him. It is unbelievable but nevertheless true that the founder of the
temple, the late Sri Keshav Ramachandra Pradhan, was initially an atheist.

Sri Pradhan was working for a Parsee gentleman of Mumbai as a pedhi (a
collector of debts owed to his employer). He lived in Bhivpuri and would
commute to Mumbai to work. In the course of his job he would frequently go
to Manmad, Nasik and Kopergaon. Pradhan had a close friend who was a devotee
of Saibaba. He would often go to Shirdi and return after having darshan of
(seeing) Sri Saibaba. Once, Pradhan visited his friend when he was about to
leave for Shirdi. He asked Pradhan to accompany him and to have Baba’s
darshan. Pradhan, who had no belief in God or Godmen, initially refused to
go with him. Finally, however, he gave in to his friend’s persuasion and
agreed to go, but not to set foot inside the mosque where Baba lived. His
friend accepted the compromise and they set out for Shirdi together.
(to be contd...)
