WHO IS SAI? - SWAMI'S DECLARATIONS 54 YEARS BACK

[A letter written by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba to
His brother on 25 May 1947
revealing His Mission]

To all who are devoted to me:

My dear one! I received the communication that you
wrote and sent; I found in it the surging floods of
your devotion and affection, with the undercurrents of
doubts and anxiety. Let Me tell you that it is
impossible to plumb the hearts and discover the
natures of Jnanis, Yogis, ascetics, saints, sages and
the like. People are endowed with a variety of
characteristics and mental attitudes; so, each one
judges according to his own angle, talks and argues in
the light of his own nature. But we have to stick to
our own path, our own wisdom, and our own resolution
without getting affected by popular appraisal. As the
proverb says, It is only the fruit laden tree that
receives the shower of stones from passers by. The
good always provoke the bad into calumny; the bad
always provokes the good into derision. This is the
nature of this world.

One must be surprised if such things do not happen.
The people too have to be pitied, rather than
condemned. They do not now. They have no patience to
judge aright. They are too full of lust, anger and
conceit to see clearly and know fully. So they write
all manner of things. If they only knew, they would
not talk or write like that. We, too, should not
attach any value to such comments and take them to
heart, as you seem to do. Truth will certainly triumph
some day. Untruth can never win. Untruth might appear
to overpower Truth, but its victory will fade away and
truth will establish itself.

It is not the way of the great to swell when people
offer worship, and shrink when people scoff. As a
matter of fact, no sacred text lays down rules to
regulate the lives of the great, prescribing the
habits and attitudes they must adopt. They themselves
know the path they must tread; their wisdom regulates
and makes their acts holy. Self-reliance, beneficial
activity - these two are their special marks. They may
also be engaged in the promotion of the welfare of
devotees and in allotting them the fruits of their
actions. Why should you be affected by doubt and
worry, so long as I am ering to these two? After all,
the praise and blame of the opulace do not touch the
Atma, the reality; they can touch only the outer
physical frame.

I have a 'Task': to foster all mankind and ensure for
all of them lives full of Ananda. I have a 'Vow': to
lead all who stray away from the straight path back
again into goodness and save them. I am attached to a
'Work' that I love: to remove the sufferings of the
poor and grant them what they lack. I have a 'reason
to be proud,' for I rescue all who worship and adore
Me aright. I have My definition of 'devotion' [I
expect that those] devoted to Me have to treat joy and
grief, gain and loss, with equal fortitude. This means
I will never give up those who attach themselves to
Me. When I am thus engaged in My beneficial task, how
can My Name be tarnished, as you apprehend? I would
advise you not to heed such absurd talk. Mahatmas do
not acquire greatness through someone calling them so;
they do not become small when someone calls them
small. Only those low ones who revel in opium and
ganja but claim to be unexcelled yogis, only those who
quote scriptural texts to justify their gourmandry and
pride, only those who are dry-as-dust scholars
exulting in their casuistry and argumentative skills,
are moved by praise or blame.

You must have read life stories of saints and divine
personages; in these books you must have read of even
worse falsehoods and more heinous imputations cast
against them. This is the lot of Mahatmas everywhere,
at all times. Why then do you take these things so
much to heart? Have you not heard of dogs that howl at
the stars? How long can they go on? Authenticity will
soon win.

I will not give up My Mission, nor My determination. I
know I will carry them out; I treat the honor and
dishonor, the fame and lame that may be the
consequence with equal equanimity. Internally, I am
unconcerned. I act but in the outer world; I talk and
move about for the sake of the outer world and for
announcing My coming to the people, else I have no
concern even with these.

I do not belong to any place, I am not attached to any
name. I have no "mine" or "thine." I answer whatever
the name you use. I go, wherever I am taken. This is
My very First Vow. I have not disclosed this to anyone
so far. For me the world is something afar, apart. I
act and move only for the sake of mankind. No one can
comprehend My Glory, whoever he is, whatever his
method of inquiry, however long his attempt.

You can yourself see the full Glory in the coming
years. Devotees must have patience and forbearance. I
am not concerned nor am I anxious that these facts
should be made known; I have no need to write these
words; I wrote them because I felt you will be pained
if I do not reply.

Thus, your Baba.
25 May 1947

***

I have come to light the lamp of love in your hearts,
to see that it shines day by day with added luster.

I have come not to disturb or destroy any faith, but
to confirm each in his own faith - so that the
Christian becomes a better Christian, the Muslim, a
better Muslim, and the Hindu, a better Hindu.

There is only one religion, the religion of Love;
There is only one language, the language of the Heart;
There is only one caste, the caste of Humanity; There
is only one law, the law of Karma; There is only one
God, He is Omnipresent.

You cannot see Me, but I am the Light you see by. You
cannot hear Me, but I am the Sound you hear by. You
cannot know Me, but I am the Truth by which you live.

Start the Day with Love; Spend the Day with Love; Fill
the Day with Love; End the Day with Love; This is the
way to God. The Lord will be watching with a thousand
eyes the least activity of man to discover any slight
trace of selfless love sweetening it.

Pranams

For some time SatGuru has been in receipt of two discourses given by Dr. Michael Goldstein in Spanish to South America sevaks recently. Devotees among the Spanish-speaking audience have described the speeches as rich and delightful, encouraging and wise, ever spoken with perfect grammar as well as apt idiom and choice metaphor. Such fluency however does not transfer easily into another language save for the most skillful and insightful translators. With hopes that you find their skill adequate, sevaks now offer this translation into English as an offering to you.

[Note: The speech is very enlightening and informative. In view of its length we propose to present the full text of the speech to our ‘saidevotees_worldnet’ members in FOUR PARTS.]

A Discourse for Devotees, by Michael Goldstein. M.D. – PART I

My dear Brothers and sisters:

Sai Ram to you all.

I am happy to be with you and very grateful to Swami for this opportunity to speak to you. We are in a good place today, and in fact, we are here together on this planet Earth, living our human lives given to us by God, for the purpose of loving and raising one another to the experience of pure love. Spiritual realisation is the constant realisation of divine consciousness. That is the reason why we are here together today and why we live these human lives which God has given us.

As devotees of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, as sincere spiritual aspirants, as people with common sense, we recognise the importance of time, the time spent in this good place and the time which we spend embodied in these human lives, given by God. This time is limited. Hence we focus on the most important: "The nature of God and man, our spiritual purpose and our plan, and time, time, time.

Now is the time to amplify our perspective and contemplate the human passage from birth to realisation, from the entrance into this world and its obstacles, to the transcendence which goes beyond the illusions of Maya! Now is the time to move towards becoming aware of our innate divinity.

Today I am speaking to you about these themes, but I must ask myself, "Am I prepared, and am I worthy?" What do ‘prepared’ and ‘worthy’ mean?

Recently, our beloved Swami gave me a profound and poignant lesson on the significance of being prepared and being worthy, a lesson which is applicable to all of us, in every moment and in everything we do.

While at Prashanthi I was immersed in a conflict which was the result of my own attachments. I had serious differences of opinion with my brothers of the Organisation. Unresolved differences of opinion breed conflicts. Conflicts breed bitterness and deception. Bitterness and deception breed anger. Anger is the antithesis of spirituality.

This particular day, Swami had planed to give a discourse. He came out to give Darshan; he walked among the multitudes and exuded his Divine Love. We were all seated there, waiting to hear His discourse.

Generally, His discourses are a preceded by one or two orators pre-selected by Swami. That day, I did not have the privilege of being pre-selected. Swami came to me and to my great surprise he asked, "Goldstein, are you going to speak?" I answered, "Swami did not give me instructions to speak today, but if it is Your will, then I will do so." Swami then asked, "Are you prepared?" I replied, "If it is Your will, then, Swami, I am prepared." He moved away and continued to give Darshan. A little later He returned and once again he asked, "Are you prepared?" I repeated to Him, "If it is Your will, then I am prepared."

He entered his room for some moments, and came out again walking among the devotees. Before sitting in His chair for the Divine Discourse, for a third time He came up to me and asked. "Are you prepared?"

This time full of eagerness, anticipating the happiness to have been selected by Swami to speak in His Divine Presence, I said, "Yes Swami, I am prepared!"

Swami then leaned close to me and said softly, "To be prepared… Is a state of the inner self."

Instantly I knew the significance of His words!!! "PREPARED AND WORTHY ARE ONE" I had thought I was prepared to speak, but I was experiencing inner unrest. Your words must reflect what you think, feel and do. Then you will be prepared and you will be worthy. I was feeling uneasiness and conflict with respect to matters of the Sai Organisation and so was not prepared to speak of peace and love.

My interior world was not in peace nor in harmony. "To be prepared is a state of the inner self" and obviously I was not prepared, and I must tell you that I did not speak that day. For us, Sai devotees, to be prepared and to be worthy are one and the same.

With a simple word or phrase, Swami teaches us many lessons at many levels. That is the nature of Divinity. One of the reasons for telling you this story in particular is that I know that many of you have bad feelings about our Sathya Sai Organisation.

Now I beseech you to search deeply within yourselves and ask your conscience, which is your master, if these sentiments are noble, spiritual, free of all egoism and worthy. As always, we want a spiritual experience! So let us look as the result of those meetings and programs offered by the Organisation, the true spiritual experience and not only mundane achievements.

Now I must repeat my mantra for today, the nature of God and man, our purpose and plan, and time, time, time.

And God?

When the Lord allows himself to manifest himself among Man, it is to ennoble him and allow him to understand the Divine Essence and the purpose of human life. The Lord, to make Himself known, allows Himself to manifest Himself to Man in many ways. God has created nature for us, that we may find our own divinity. It is like playing ‘hide and seek’. Being the omnipresent Lord, He hides everywhere. Candidly we look for Him outside of ourselves, as we mature spiritually we look within, in our own hearts. There we find our true self, our divine self, our self…. free of all egoism.

The knowledge of God is immanent in all the experiences of life.

In so many ways the Lord allows himself to be recognised by man. Unquestionably, the greatest of all is when he takes the form of man, embodies as Avatar, as God-man and walks amid us. The Bhagavad Gita teaches us that this occurs when civilisation suffers a spiritual and moral downfall, to the point that darkness befalls us. The Lord comes to the world as a divine light, loving and enlightening, and he enables us to recognise the outstanding characteristics of true humanity, of nobility, of character, of excellence. He manifests himself in the universal human values; Sathya, Dharma, Shanti, Prema, Ahimsa; truth, right conduct, peace, love and non-violence.

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai has embodied for this purpose. Contemplate and rejoice! The lamb and the lion of God are amidst us!!!!!

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, our Beloved Sai, is merciful and compassionate, peaceable and loving. He is the Lamb of God.

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, our beloved Swami, is all powerful, omniscient, omnipotent. He is the lion of God.

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, our beloved Swami, is the divine synthesis of sweetness and strength, of innocence and of knowledge, of attainability and of invulnerability.

He is both the lamb and the lion of God.

Frequently, through the years, many people have asked why I travel to India, being so far away and so often. Before answering the question, I contemplate my experiences with Swami in the last 25 years and I ask myself the same questions, which I have just mentioned.

Who among men, knows all that we have thought, felt, said, done and also dreamt?

Who among men, is not limited by the law of time and space, nor matter nor energy, as our scarce knowledge allows us to understand God’s creation?

Who among men can comfort the ignorant, or the suffering, with a look, a smile, a simple touch and so many other imperceptible ways?

Who among men has given his life for the good of humanity so magnanimously, and so free of all egoism, always giving and forgiving, never taking and forgetting?

Who among men spontaneously speaks the eternal truth with fundamental authority?

Who among men can inspire the pure and innocent love of a child in the hardest and most cynical of hearts?

According to my experience, Sathya Sai Baba does all of these things. For me, that confirms His Divinity. Ironically, Swami himself has said that only an idiot goes out into the world to look for God, because God resides in the heart of every man and woman. So, perhaps I have made so many journeys to India because of stubbornness and being hardhearted.

But I feel a great unprecedented love and rejoicing, when I am in the presence of Sathya Sai Baba.

The life of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba demonstrates Divinity and inspires our own spiritual transformation.

The message of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba teaches us the nature and paths of Divinity and inspires us to look for the spiritual purpose of life.

The work of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba exemplifies the omnipotence of Divinity and inspires us to emulate Him to transcend our imagined limitations.

A Discourse for Devotees, by Michael Goldstein. M.D. – PART II

The nature of God and man, our purpose and our plan and time, time, time.

What about time?

Bhagawan Baba has said, "Don’t waste even one moment of the span of life which has been granted to you. Time is the body of God"

Swami is like a divine clock. The hands of the clock, whose movement we cannot see, represent the changes that He is making in the world. The minute hand represents those movements that we can almost see. They represent the changes that He is making in each and every one of us. The second hand, whose movements are almost imperceptible, represent those glorious occasions when Swami intervenes directly in our lives and we know it without any doubt whatsoever.

I remember an incident in which a devotee, who had been behaving incorrectly was reprimanded by Swami. The devotee, mortified by Swami’s reproach, said to Him: "Swami, I will stop my incorrect actions from this moment on." Swami responded, very severely, " From this moment on--no, but from right now!"

Without a doubt, Swami wants us to understand that time is life and that no one knows what awaits us ahead. How can we squander the most priceless which cannot be replaced, and which cannot even be measured …? The time of our lives! Only Swami knows what is awaiting us.

The presence of Bhagawan Baba amidst us, here and now is the will and work of God. In fact, it is the Lord himself that has come to keep us from the precipice of auto-destruction. That He is with us here and now, in the human form of our beloved Swami-- that is the will and work of God.

The advent of the millennium is the will and work of man. Man has divided time into various units, according to the movement of the celestial spheres, in order to be able to act and interact in an orderly way in this world. Man has created the distinctions in time: second, minute, hour, day, week, month, year, century and millennium.

An unfortunate consequence of our useful classification of time in these divisions has been the development of the possibility of the power to "postpone", as a form of life, amidst humans.

Only man delays and postpones. Animals, birds, ants and other forms of living beings do what they are meant to do at any given moment, only we leave for tomorrow that which should be done today.

We are punctual for the frivolous divisions, but we are out of time to study and apply the Divine Teachings of Bhagawan Baba in human nature.

The nature of God and man, our purpose, our plan, and time, time, time.

And what of man?

Swami indicates that we should repeat to ourselves, "I am a man, not an animal". What does this mean?

I am a man, not an animal.

A great philosopher once said, " Knowledge is not enough, we should apply it. Will is not enough, we must do it".

The will of God will be done.

Our bodies are the tools which fulfill the work of divinity.

Our minds are the artisans which use the tools to fulfill the work of divinity.

Our conscience is the light of the Lord within us, which guides our minds, which are the artisans that use our bodies, which are the tools, to fulfill the works of Divinity.

Repeat slowly…… (Michael repeats the above, beginning with "Our conscience is the light of the Lord….)

"The conscience gives wise advise to the mind, which sends orders to the body"

Repeat slowly….. (He repeats the above, "The conscience gives….)

Through our conscience, our minds and bodies become instruments for the demonstration and the preservation of the glory of the Divine Conscience, which is Love, and Love is God. Love all, serve all. These are the works of Divinity.

Will we adhere to the spiritual path of life?

Or will we succumb to the squandering of mundane life?

The choice is ours, truly it is!

I am a man, not an animal.

Swami has described the spiritual anatomy of man, using the analogy of a carriage. He tells us that the horses represent the indriyas or senses; the reigns represent the manas or the mind; the carriage represents the body; the coachman represents the buddhi, or intellect, and the passenger in the coach represents the atma, or spirit.

Let us ask ourselves in this context, if we journey through these lives as divine passengers, or will we be driven through these lives as beasts of burden?

The choice is ours!

I am a man, not an animal.

We should never allow our lack of control to limit the Divinity within.

We aspire to experience Divinity from the height of divine wisdom and the attitude of unconditional love.

Our mind is a reservoir. We must maintain the contents clean. Our conscience stirs up the dirt and the detestable, and drowns the conscience of God. The torrent of purity draws the cardinal enemies of man; lust, anger, greed, pride, attachment, and jealousy. They submerge and then the clear waters of pure love, free of egoism, water the ground of our humanity and allows our sprits to flourish.

We must have confidence in our conscience and in the conscience of others, Then society will become a gracious game, rejoiceful and of amorous interaction between the Lord, Our Beloved Baba, and His creation, humanity. We are really brothers and sisters in the family of humanity. Are we prepared to live in confidence of our own conscience and in the conscience of others?

The choice is ours!

Our lives are a crossing of the illusion of reality, of the fears of the darkness to the light and to clarity, from the poverty of ignorance, to the opulent treasure of the knowledge of oneself.

To arrive at our divine destiny, we must look at the map, which is engraved in our hearts, that is self- inquiry.

To see the map within us, and to know love free of all egoism and to navigate these lives in this exterior world with wisdom, we need light, Divine Illumination.

The Lord provides the light of His love to everyone. It is within us and around us. It is everywhere. Swami so often tells us that He is in us, beside us and around us. Swami is the light of the Lord that allows us to experience the unconditional love and see the map of the self-knowledge inscribed in our hearts.

Swami is the light.

The light is the loving divine consciousness.

The loving divine consciousness is God.

The nature of God and man, our purpose and our plan, and time, time, time.

What is the purpose of our lives?

First is there is creation.

Then there is civilisation.

Then there is self-realisation.

First there is creation. God dedicates himself to humanity.

Our past actions determine our genetic predisposition and the circumstances of our birth. We are born in a situation that allows us to learn the spiritual lessons we need, to obtain the spiritual recompense we deserve, and to repair our past transgressions. This way we truly reap what we sow.

Then there is civilisation. Men and women recognise that the quality of life improves with peace and love. Men and women search for a purpose in their lives. There is self-inquiry. Our character determines our level and place in civilisation. If we are generous and compassionate, sincere and unconditional, we are free and noble. If we are mean and indifferent, false and egoistic, we are enslaved and we are ignoble men. The ignoble person is enslaved by one’s ego and body. The desire of power over others and sensual pleasures contaminate and enslave the ignoble person.

Then there is self-realisation. Men and women experience and become one with their innate divinity. They live in constant and everlasting consciousness of their divine reality. That is self-realisation. This is the divine purpose of our human lives.

First we are born and we see the light of day.

Then we learn and experience the light of love and wisdom.

Then we identify ourselves with our consciousness and we become one with the light of God.

We see!--------------we experience! -------------we become light!

The purpose of these human lives, then, is to become constantly conscious of the loving divine consciousness which saturates all creation. The nature of this consciousness is unconditional love.

The nature of God and man, our purpose and our plan, and time, time, time.

A Discourse for Devotees, by Michael Goldstein. M.D. – PART III

WHAT IS OUR PLAN TO ACHIEVE OUR GOAL?

Heaven is a mental state, a state free of egoism. Heaven is a mental state in which we experience and live So Ham: I am That. We become that. That is divine consciousness, which saturates all our experience of infinite bliss. The absence of ego, being free of attachment is a state of infinite bliss. It is a state of self-realisation. That is heaven. Swami assures us that we can reach heaven in these human lives. We can live in heaven now. All we have to do is to search within ourselves and find heaven.

From this it comes that hell is also a state of mind and we can convert our lives into hell if that is what we choose. Hell is characterised by incessant desires. As each desire is satisfied, this gives origin to another desire to obtain more. Desires of power and of pleasure. Desires which can never be satisfied in an everlasting manner. This gives origin to deception and frustration, to pain and discouragement. We become frenetic and foolish, running madly around the desert chasing every mirage which appears in the exterior world.

Heaven or hell. The choice is ours.

Suppose we all choose heaven. We make a decision. We choose heaven and we repel hell. What do we do next?

Spiritual transformation is the awakening of our latent divinity. Our Lord, Bhagawan Baba, transforms us in many ways. The Lord is inscrutable and mysterious. We cannot understand his way of working with our lean mental capacities. We can understand, up to a point, through our intuitions, when He inspires us. Then the attained knowledge is experienced knowledge, not knowledge learnt by memory. This distinction between learnt knowledge and experienced knowledge is very important.

When we really know, we do not accept the knowledge, we are the knowledge. This is true knowledge. That is wisdom.

Swami has taught us that God is consciousness and that the nature of consciousness is unconditional love. He advises us to dig deep into our hearts and that this is how we can find this consciousness. How do we do this?

We are all very different as individuals. But our differences are superficial. We are brothers and sisters of the divine mother and father. That is the unity of our essential nature in spite of the diversity of our appearances and external circumstances. For each one of us the most efficient method of moving us spiritually will be something different. Although, do whatever we do, and however we do it, this must be compatible with the divine teachings. I will explain a simple example. It is based on my own experience with Swami and his teachings.

I have talked about this before. It is important to have a spiritual plan. To make a plan for oneself which embraces Swami’s teachings, which satisfies our needs and is befitting to our lives. Have a spiritual plan. Then you can dedicate yourselves to your spiritual purpose.

This plan consists of 9 points. 3 points are about perspective, 3 points are about attitude, and 3 points are about actions. The perspective, the attitude, the action. What we think about things, how we feel about them, what we do with them.

It is necessary for each of us to determine his perspective, his attitude and his actions. We must examine what we think, how we feel and what we are doing to move in the right direction. I don’t want to give you the impression that we can make a package deal of spirituality. But you can think about this and put it into practice in an orderly manner. I will describe the nine points. I will give you examples of experiences with Swami wherever possible.

Firstly, the nine points are:

In the category of perspective:

· 1 - do not worry about the past, but learn from the mistakes made.

· 2 - do not worry about the future, but make appropriate plans to achieve one’s objectives.

· 3 - do not worry about what other people are thinking about you or about events in the world around us. Consider everybody as divine brothers and sisters and all the events as God-given opportunities to serve.

In the category of attitude:

· 4 - Be loving with all, always.

· 5 - Always be happy within.

· 6 - Always be silent and pacific within.

In the category of action:

· 7 - remove all unworthy thoughts from the mind before they make an impression causing emotion or action. Allow noble thoughts to mature till they become uplifted actions.

· 8 - Follow the conscience and act without delay with complete confidence upon the base of the conscience.

· 9 - focus upon Swami, His name, His form, His love, His words, His actions, in all of Him, for He is all.

Now we examine each of these points with examples of Swami wherever possible.

Point 1 is to forget the past, we must live in the present.

We must learn from the past, but not be worried by it. We must learn to live now, in this moment. We must not let sadness nor past errors contaminate the present nor the future.

In my first journey to India I knew I would be a devotee of Swami for the rest of my life. I knew that I had met the love of my life, the fountain of the realisation of my life. This happened more than 26 years ago. I knew I would always follow Swami.

What does `follow Swami’ mean? It means that one will follow a spiritual path. What is the final result of following a spiritual path? It is union with God, self-realisation.

I had lead a very mundane life and I worried that my past transgressions could prevent my spiritual progress. The last day of my first visit to India, I was sitting in the Mandir for morning Bhajans, just before leaving the Ashram.

While sitting in the Mandir listening to the Bhajans I started to worry about my past errors. I felt useless and without hope because of my past. I felt that although I knew I would always follow Swami, my past would not allow me to reach the end of the spiritual path. I thought past – past – past, an unsurpassable obstacle. Then suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was Swami. He had entered the Mandir by the back door, coming up to me from behind. He simply put his hand on my shoulder, looked at me in the eyes and said. "Forget the past", he then carried on walking. He left me and I cried. I felt redeemed.

The Lord said, "Forget the past". The heavy load of past errors, the sadness and the guilt were removed.

That is the power of the Lord!

Point 2 is do not worry about the future, live in the present.

A long time ago there was a Sai devotee who had cancer. His doctors had given him chemotherapy. Then his cancer regressed.

He was a devotee of Swami and he used to go to see Swami periodically to ask for his divine intervention. The man lived many years more than the doctors had given him. One day this man came to me and he said that he had just arrived in India and he had refused to be treated with chemotherapy prescribed by the doctors.

He pleaded that I ask Swami to intervene. As Swami had spoken to the man on many occasions, I told Swami that this man was in the Ashram, and that he was afraid of dying and I asked Swami to intervene and to save his life.

Swami then said to me, "This man has had cancer for twelve years. Each time that he came to Swami during the last twelve years he has been thinking about the cancer and death. Swami has given him twelve years of life, but he has not used this time that Swami has given him to live. He has only been thinking about death during those twelve years". None the less, Swami received the man and he continued to live.

We must not worry so much about the future that it stops us appreciating the present. Swami tells us to live in the present, the omnipresent.

Point 3 is we must not worry unduly about the events in the world or about other people’s reactions towards us.

Swami teaches us that we are three people. The one we think we are, which corresponds to our body; the one others think we are, which corresponds to our mind; and the one we really are, which corresponds to our spirit. We are not the body, we are not the mind, we are the spirit of God, enclosed in this human form. So, our emotions and actions must not be based on other people or on exterior facts. Our motivation, direction and destiny must be governed by the owner, our conscience.

The three points 4,5 and 6, under attitude are: be loving, be happy, and be silent and pacific within.

Point 4 is be loving

Bhagawan Sathya Sai Baba, our beloved Swami, has come to light the lamp of love in the heart of humanity. The qualities of light are purity and the absence of egoism. The powers of light are redemption and transformation.

To love spiritually is to love without egoism. This means love without desire. Love without the need to possess the object of love. That is pure love, unconditional love, divine love. We learn to love as humans in our diverse relationships to be able in time to love God as he loves us. This is the most important of the nine points. If we are really loving, everything else will be given to us.

All creation is like God’s thought and life is like God’s dream. Our chosen form of God is the thinker that planned the universe and the dreamer that conceived life. The Lord has all his creation and is immanent in all. But God is bigger than the creation that has originated from Him. In the same way, divine love contains and includes the feelings, which we are capable of harboring as human beings, such as affection, respect and veneration.

But as God is greater than his creation, in the same way divine love transcends, and is greater than, our human family expressions and our experience of love. The qualities of divine love are purity and the absence of egoism. The powers of divine love are redemption and transformation.

A Discourse for Devotees, by Michael Goldstein. M.D. – PART IV

As Sai devotees, how do we love Swami? How should we love Swami?

Most of us have some hardness in our hearts. Some of us have enormous blocks of granite and others, only grains of sand. We must open our hearts and soften them.

On a superficial level, we are delighted with the beautiful form of Bhagawan Baba, and fascinated by his divine personality. Is this not love? Yes, it is, but it is not sufficient, On a deeper level, we feel inspired by the noble words and actions of Bhagawan Baba, and we aspire to emulate his heroic actions. Is this not love? Yes, it is, but it is not sufficient.

Finally we recognise Swami as the Embodiment of the most uplifted, noble and true aspect of ourselves. We turn our minds within, and we see the divine light of truth and love. We understand that this, our spiritual heart, is our true identity, and it is one with the Lord. We reach the absence of egoism. The duality of God and us no longer exists. We fuse with the Lord. We must make an effort to love God in this way.

To love God has a dramatic effect on our lives. To love God is like diving into the ocean of the absence of egoism. When we dive into these waters of absence of egoism we give origin to waves which expand and embrace everything, concentric circles of sacredness, which eventually include all creation. When we dive into these waters of the absence of egoism, we submerge ourselves profoundly in a purification process, which changes us forever and uplifts all who know us. Such is the nature of unconditional love. It transforms.

Point 5 is be happy.

Happiness is contagious. When we smile, or show a happy gesture, we shine light in the minds and hearts of our brothers and sisters. We make others happy. And so they make us happier than ever. And so on successively. Happiness generates joyousness. The realisation of our own divinity is perfect bliss.

Swami has a marvelous sense of humour. When He smiles and laughs, this makes our hearts glow and one cannot help but feel very happy. One day I found myself in the house in Kodaicanal with Swami and a group of students. Swami was talking to them in Telugu. I could not understand what he was saying. Then he looked at me and mentioned my name and the boys laughed. I sensed the boys were laughing because Swami had made a joke about my excess weight. I was sitting facing Swami and Swami looked at me and laughed with all his heart.

I watched him laugh, I watched his eyes and then I was filled with happiness and joy. I also started to laugh, even though Swami’s happiness and laughing made me so happy that I also laughed. Then suddenly Swami stopped laughing. He looked at me and asked, ""Why are you laughing?" I answered, "I am laughing because Swami is so happy that it makes me happy". Then Swami became serious and said to the boys,

"Goldstein is happy because Swami is happy. He is laughing because Swami is laughing. That is true devotion."

This apparently simple event which I have related is the way in which Swami often teaches us important lessons. He created this little drama in that which the joke was about me, but I was happy because Swami was happy and I love him so much. In this incident Swami used me to demonstrate devotion to the students. To be happy is very important.

Point 6 be silent within.

To be silent within is to be in peace. Peace is the absence of turbulent emotion. To be silent within is essential to hear the interior voice of God. Respect and preserve the interior temple of silence.

The last 3 points, points 7, 8 9 are all about our actions.

Point 7 is to cleanse de mind of all unworthy thoughts.

Do not allow these to create an impression, which causes emotion or action. At the same time, always accommodate noble thoughts and allow that these cause uplifted actions.

Swami teaches us that we should consider bad thoughts as devils, which enter into our minds to sidetrack us from our spiritual path. We should not let them enter. Bad thoughts generate emotions and actions, which then cause bad tendencies and bad habits.

Our conscience must sift thoughts and determine if a thought a worthy of entry into our mind. This results in a good character and spiritual progress.

In one of my visits to Prashanthi many years ago, I played a little game with my thoughts, whist I was sitting in the Mandir. Every time an unworthy or distracting thought entered my mind, I shook my head lightly and threw out the unwanted thought. At first I shook my head so often that I feared the brothers sitting near me would think that I had developed a neurological affliction. While I practiced this exercise, I discovered that unwanted thoughts came less frequently. Since then I have learned that physical gestures are not necessary to control the mind.

Point 8 is to follow one’s own conscience. To act without delay and with complete confidence based on the dictates of the conscience.

One day another devotee and I were sitting at Swami’s feet. Swami started to talk to me. He told me that this man was a good devotee. Swami said that each time this man had to make a decision he looked within and looked for an answer within his own conscience. The man never doubted the answer which came. Swami said that this man asked, ‘Is this correct or incorrect, is it good or bad, what would Swami do?’ And then the man acted according to the answer he heard in his own conscience. Swami said that the answer did not always come at once. But the man persisted in his enquiry until he received an answer. Swami put great emphasis on the importance of this process in spirituality and said that this man was a good devotee because he had faith and always followed this process.

We must recognise that our conscience represents God within us. The commanding morals which come from our conscience must be respected.

Finally, point 9 is to focus oneself in Swami, to focus oneself in the Lord, His divine name, form, love, teachings and actions.

The constant focus on the spiritual is essential to be able to reach our spiritual purpose. We can focus ourselves in one of His names and forms, we can focus ourselves in the great spiritual principles, in those on which all religions are based. We can focus ourselves on the generosity and sacredness which we see around us. They are all expressions of the loving universal consciousness which is God.

The spiritual movement is that movement which has the purpose of taking us to the realisation of our inherent divinity. To move in the correct direction it is important that we consider our own perspective, attitude and actions. I have given you a formula which consists of 9 simple points.

Our perspective should also include living in the present and not to be worried about the past nor the future, the reactions of people nor the events of the world. Our attitude should be loving, happy and silent within. Our actions should include discarding unworthy thoughts, following our conscience and focusing on Swami.

I advise you from my heart to draw up your own spiritual plan to reach your spiritual purpose. Your own plan will be adequate for who you are and where you are in your spiritual understanding.

Swami has given us another spiritual tool. He has put his name to a spiritual movement, the Sathya Sai Baba Organisation, so that we, His children, can learn to love one another and bring unconditional love and service to the world.

Humanity has no life without universal consciousness. Swami teaches us that universal consciousness is the omnipresent divinity, it is divine love. This universal consciousness resides in the heart of each man and woman and provides life to the mind and body. Universal consciousness is realised and appreciated by each one of us by way of our conscience.

The Sai Organisation, or any spiritual Organisation, has no life without the conscience of each man and woman in that Organisation. It is not spiritual, it is not of God, nor from God, if it is not immersed in, and if it is not saturated by, the universal consciousness, or unconditional love. This can only happen if the Organisation is guided by the conscience of each man and woman acting together in the spirit of unconditional love. It is for this reason that Swami has given His name to the Organisation.

Swami repeatedly says that He is a source, not a force. He is a spiritual source. The Sai Organisation should also de a source, not a force. It should be a source of light and love. In everything we do, people should feel an unconditional love and obtain spiritual benefit, they should feel uplifted. That is the nature of a genuine spiritual movement.

As members and co-ordinators of the Sathya Sai Baba Organisation we should consider ourselves servants of the people whom Swami has already called and of those he will call in the future. We should have a solid faith in the divinity of our Lord, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, and believe that he will motivate and touch the hearts of everybody that they may commence the spiritual path.

The spiritual path of a particular individual can include, or not, the name and the form of our beloved Bhagawan Baba. That is between the Lord and every individual heart. But all the names and forms of God are one. The eternal spiritual principles are one for all the religions and everybody.

We in the Organisation should consider ourselves spiritual doorkeepers. What are the duties of a spiritual doorkeeper? We greet with love those who come to the door. We open the door and thus we provide access to Swami’s teachings and programs. And what is more important, we provide access to Swami’s love if the Organisation is functioning correctly. Finally, as spiritual doorkeepers, we protect the establishment. We protect the sacred name of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. We do this assuring that everything that happens within the Sai Organisation, under the name of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, is worthy of His Divinity.

We should remember that He is the omnipresent witness and we should trust that all we do and everything that others do as part of the Organisation will obtain His approval.

My beloved brothers and sisters,

In conclusion, we are all apparently different. Different in names forms experiences, nationalities, races and religions. These differences are the clothing that our spirits wear to act and interact in this world, to be able to play the role in the divine drama of the creation.

Although, having said our lines, having sung our songs, having danced our dance, we take off our makeup and our fancy dress. We return to our solitary beings. And here we discover that we are all part of the one, of the loving universal consciousness, which is God! Our beloved Bhagawan Baba is the incarnation of this divine universal consciousness. He is constantly reminding us that we are all divine consciousness. We are all divine love.

Today we have reflected upon the nature of God and man, upon our spiritual purpose and our plan, and time, time, time.

Now is the time for you and for me, and for everyone everywhere, to advance towards the realisation of our innate divinity!

Jai Sai Ram

THE GLORY OF VINAYAKA

What is the meaning of the word Ganapathi. 'Ga' stands for Buddhi (intellect) 'Na' stands for Jnana (Wisdom), which means 'Ganapathi' is the master of intellect and wisdom. Acquisition of knowledge and wisdom amounts to worship of Ganapathi. The name 'Ganapathi' is apt in the sense that He is a combination of various forms of Anushakthi (Atomic power). Not only this, He is also the Master of all Ganas and powers. He has another name 'Vinayaka', because He has no master above Him. He is also called 'Vighneshwara', as He is the remover of all the obstacles and the master of all forms of Wealth. As the same current is responsible for the bulbs to glow, fans to rotate, and the machines to function; similarly the same atomic power is responsible for various forms of energy, be it heat, light, laser or magnetic. Water extinguishes fire, yet you find fire in water, which is referred to as 'Badabaagni'. Forms may vary, but the power is one and the same. Basing on this, Vedanta says "Sarvam Khalvidam Brahma" ( Brahman is all-pervasive), " Sarvam Vishnu mayam jagath" (the entire world is pervaded by Vishnu). We should give up observing differences between 'Ganapathi', 'Vishnu', 'Shiva', 'Shakthi' and human beings. The Divinity is uniform in all. Observing differences is only pravritti lakshana (external trait) and not nivritti lakshana (inward trait). The inward trait refers to the atomic energy, which moves about formlessly in everybody. To sustain this external world, the atomic energy assumes many forms.

As long you are egoistic, you will not be liked by anybody including your wife and children, though they may exhibit love externally for the sake of the world. So long there is ego in you, you will never attain bliss. Therefore you must kill the ego in the first instance. You will be miserable as long as there is anger in you. The day you give up anger, you will experience happiness. So long there are desires in you, you will never attain wealth and prosperity. The day you give up desires, all forms of wealth will follow you. So long there is greed in you, you will not find any happiness. Vinayaka is highly intelligent. Many derive happiness seeing the form of Vinayaka. The form itself is wonderful and mysterious with a fat belly, big trunk, attractive eyes and beautiful ears. Why is Vinayaka is elephant-faced? Elephant is very intelligent. It has a huge body, compared to other animals. Even the footprints of the mighty lion get erased, when the elephant treads on them. No other animal can match the intelligence of an elephant. Elephant also acts as a guide to mankind, in the sense that it clears the way as it treads along in a dense forest. Similarly in the forest of life, to clear the thorny bushes of pain, sorrow and suffering, one should tread along the path shown by the intellect. 'Ganapathi' has the elephant face as a symbol of high intelligence.

The principle of Ganapathi is not an ordinary one. It is the very manifestation of various forms of energy and intelligence. The wisdom of Saraswathi is contained within His belly. We will not have any obstacles, if we undertake any task paying our first respects to Vinayaka. On Ganesh Chathurthi day students keep their books in front of Ganesha and worship, so that they may be bestowed with good intelligence.

The festival of Vighneshwara is not an ordinary one. All the faculties and powers are latent in Vighneshwara. It is not enough if you pray to Ganapathi only on Ganesh Chathurthi day, you have to pray everyday. We should think of God every moment of our life. We should offer all our actions to God. For example, you eat an apple. Are you eating for the satisfaction of the apple? No. You are eating it for your own satisfaction. You go to Mandir wearing white dress. You do not wear the dress for the satisfaction of the dress, you wear it for your satisfaction. Likewise, whatever you do is for your own satisfaction and not for its satisfaction. Whatever you do, do it for the love of God. You will achieve success in everything, you will attain the state of bliss and peace. Consider everything as Divine.

Develop your faith and see the same divinity existing in every living being. Spread your love, which is the very essence of your divine nature and the divine nature of all living beings. Look upon every person with compassion and love. Unless you adopt this approach in your dealings with others, all your spiritual exercises will just be a waste. Worshipping God while harming your fellow human beings can never take you to your goal. The Gita teaches that man himself is God, and that God is man. This unity of God and man has repeatedly been emphasized in the Gita. "Only the one who treats all alike is a true human being," Krishna proclaimed.

I have come to give you the key of the treasure of Bliss, to tell you how to tap that spring, for you have forgotten the way to blessedness. If you waste this chance of saving yourselves, it is just your fate. You have come to get from Me tinsel and trash, the petty little cures and promotions, worldly joys and comforts. Very few of you desire to get from Me the thing I have come to give you viz Liberation itself, and even among these few, those who stick to the path of spiritual discipline and ultimately succeed are a handful.

I am always aware of the future, the past as well as the present of every one of you. So I am not so moved by mercy. Since I know the past, the background, the reaction is different. It is your consequence of evil deliberately done in the previous birth, and so I allow your suffering to continue, often modified by some little compensation. I do not cause either joy or grief. You are the designer of both these chains that bind you. I am Full of Bliss come and take Bliss from Me, dwell on that Bliss and be full of Peace.

God cannot be gained through attachment to a falsehood. The body is a house given to you for rent; the owner is God. Live there so long as He wills, thanking Him and paying Him the rent of faith and devotion.

Symbolism of the Siva Form

The secret of Creation is evident from the description of the form of Siva. The crescent moon on Sivas head symbolizes the consciousness in human beings, the Ganga symbolizes the Life Force and the snakes on Sivas body represent the myriad of living beings. He resides on a silver mountain. His dearest friend is Kubera, the Lord of Wealth. Despite being endowed with all these, why was He obliged to carry the begging bowl? To demonstrate to the world that every kind of wealth is a hindrance to spiritual advancement, Siva renounced everything. It is through renunciation Siva became the eternal embodiment of supreme bliss.

The Lord has another name. It is only when the love principle underlying this name is rightly understood, the real form of the Cosmos can be recognized. That name is Saambasiva. Saa means divinity. Amba refers to the cosmos. Siva means the Supreme person (Purusha).

For some time SatGuru has been in receipt of two discourses given by Dr. Michael Goldstein in Spanish in South America.  Sevaks of SatGuru now offer this translation of the second discourse into English as an offering to you.

IN VIEW OF ITS LENGTH, THE DISCOURSE IS POSTED IN THREE PARTS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE MEMBERS OF ‘SAI DEVOTEES WORLDNET’ GROUP

A discourse for members of the public, by Michael Goldstein. M.D., USA

Dear ladies and gentlemen, brothers and sisters of the family of humanity, Embodiments of Divinity,

Good afternoon and welcome to our meeting. We are here today to share our spiritual adventure with you, our experience of love and unselfishness. Our dream becomes reality, the bliss which arises when fear and egoism cease to exist.

Today, we have nothing to sell, but everything to offer. We are offering that which, to us, is most precious. As far as we can, we will share the inspiration, which we have experienced in our interactions with Sathya Sai Baba and his teachings. These meetings have given us a broad and extensive view of life, a universal vision of reality and the knowledge and experience of Divinity. We hope to share with you today this perspective, this reality, and this spiritual introspection.

One unique aspect of this spiritual adventure is based on the fact that it is happening right now. Sathya Sai Baba is teaching and demonstrating his universal and spiritual message of love and service. His teachings and his work are inspiring and elevating the lives of benevolent people, all over the world. What we will speak of today, you can see for yourselves, you will know first hand. This is very special and important; the great spiritual adventure is now manifesting itself.

While our lungs are breathing, our hearts are beating and our minds are awake, the great God-given opportunity of reaching our spiritual destination of these human lives can be realized.

The presence, the teachings and the undertakings of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba directly and indirectly influence each one of us. They teach us and show us that the highest objectives, those furthest from our reach, the very highest goals and noblest aspirations of man and woman can be achieved. In fact, these are reality-- anything else, is pure delusion. Delusion is what has invaded us since the beginning of time. It is delusion to believe that we are merely a conglomeration of flesh and bones, instincts and sensations, thoughts and emotions. It is delusion to think that we are limited to these individual identities, to these weak human bodies, and to these variable and imperfect minds. It is not like that, it is not like that, we are more than that, much more!

Sathya Sai Baba has taught us and demonstrated to us that humanity is unique in the whole of God’s creation. We are capable of profoundly and intensively turning within, and finding the divine source and selfsame essence of our lives. Our spiritual heart, our interior voice, our conscience, is all names for our true spiritual identity. The truth is that we are manifestations of God.

I have had the good fortune to travel to India some 80 times over the last 26 years to be in the presence of Bhagawan Sathya Sai Baba. My mother, my father, my wife, my sons and their wives, and all my grandchildren have traveled to India to be in His presence. All of them adore Him and their lives have been spiritually elevated by Him. Four generations of my family have been His devotees and have been inspired by His love and wisdom.

Sathya Sai Baba has given me a spark of His unconditional love and has allowed me to understand in my heart that there is a divine purpose in human life.

Our goal, inspired by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, is to recognize the true divine nature of human life. To the point that any one of us, who succeeds in achieving this culmination of noble ideas and universal spiritual principles, becomes a living example of love, goodwill and joyfulness, which inspires everyone with whom he interacts to look within themselves and find their own unconditional love, goodwill and joyfulness.

Many of you, will perhaps never more hear about Sathya Sai Baba, or never think about him after this meeting. However, all of us will be influenced by the unconditional love, which He generates, and the movement towards God that He has initiated among the men and women of all nations. Goodwill and love know no frontiers nor limitations. They cannot be contained nor restrained.

Prashanthi Nilayam means `the abode of supreme peace.’ It is the name of the ashram of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, situated in southern India. It is a true wonder of the world. That ashram is an oasis of apprenticeship and spiritual elevation. It is to be found in the middle of India, there it is, this place, which seems to defy the imagination. However, this oasis is real. It is not a mirage. There are schools, from primary to university levels. There are general hospitals and hospitals of advanced specialized surgery. There are spaces and places for devotion, sleeping quarters for spiritual peregrines, and other necessary infrastructures to receive the multitude of spiritual seekers who meet to be in His Divine Presence. Still more important is that there exists a serene atmosphere of reverence and love, amiability and compassion, which is profoundly moving. This ashram, far from the city and civilization, is truly a wonder of the world.

And in this unusual place, in this spiritual oasis, is Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, defying reason, the pinnacle of the unexplainable.

The greatest storyteller of all times could never conceive a heaven such as this, nor a being like Him. Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba is the prominent master of the world, extraordinarily humanitarian, who elevates and transforms individuals and institutions of society in a unique and monumental way. He is a lamplight of wisdom and love, which shines through the tempestuous seas of the egoism and the ignorance, which prevail today. He brings the greatly needed illumination to this world of disharmony and chaos, which we have created by our lack of common sense and goodwill.

The light of his wisdom and love re-unite people from everywhere, independent of nationality, race or religion. Every benevolent person who yearns for truth is attracted by the light of his wisdom and love. He has mentioned that his mission is to light the lamp of love in the heart of humanity. My experience has shown me, through many years, that the qualities of his love are purity and unconditional, and the powers of  his love are redemption and transformation.

His teachings are direct and compatible with the teaching of all the religions of the world. He teaches us that every man and woman can recognize and realize his true and highest self. He teaches us that Divinity is omnipresent, and that the nature of Divinity is unconditional love. In fact, this is our true nature. This unconditional love is accessible to all of us. We will achieve the “awakening” awareness of it, within ourselves, when we cross the threshold of our consciousness and our attention is focused on it and we follow it; when we are permanently conscious, then we will be conscious of our innate divinity. Finally, we experience unconditional love, a profound wisdom, and a lasting happiness.

The humanitarian undertakings of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba are astronomical in magnitude and scope. Bhagawan Baba has established an educational system, which covers Primary School to an accredited University, the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Superior Studies. The University offers pre-grade and advanced studies including doctorate grades. The academic achievements of the students are of the best in India. The outstanding facts, which distinguish this educational system, are very important precedents:

The Sai educational system promotes goodwill and virtue equally in the student and in the teaching.

The education is totally free of charge for all students. The payment is not in money, but in commitment to achieving nobility of character.

The education on all levels puts emphasis on that the result of education, the development of nobility of character, goes side by side with the achievement of skills and knowledge.

In this way, the educational institution is truly ennobled.

In July of this year, there was a conference in Prashanthi Nilayam called “Educare”.

The Prime Minister of India sent a telegram to Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, directed to all the delegates of the conference. The Honourable Vajpaye, Prime Minister of India, telegrammed  the following message:

“I am extremely pleased to know that there will be an international convention of Sri Sathya Sai teachers in Prashanthi Nilayam in July 2001, on the subject of “Educare”, meaning education based on human values. It is another demonstration of the profound commitment of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, for the good development of everybody, especially for our children, who constitute the future of our nation and of humanity.

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s understanding of the art and science of education has given Him the discernment to convert the educational programs and texts into “holistic Educare”, which involves not only the teachers, but also the parents. It also grants them great happiness, as well as the responsibility for the development of the children’s potential. The 5 D’s, corresponding to Devotion, Discipline, Duty, Discrimination and Determination will help not only the youth, but also all of us to live a life full of meaning and happiness.

Truly, the philosophy and practice of “Educare” needs to be integrated into the general education system of India for our national regeneration.

I send my best wishes to all the participants for the success of the convention.

I hope that we can be capable of transmitting the knowledge and the love which Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba generates to all the children who are entrusted to Him.”

M.D., USA

Bhagawan Baba has created a healthcare system, which includes the creation of multiple hospitals and two Super Specialty Hospitals, the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Advanced Medical Sciences in Puttaparthy, and the Institute of Advanced Medical Sciences in Bangalore. They have a capacity of 300 and 400 beds respectively.

The hospital in Puttaparthy was inaugurated by the President of India almost ten years ago, and the hospital in Bangalore was inaugurated in January this year, by the current Prime Minister of India.

The mortality, duration of hospitalization, and the statistics of cases of infection in the Sri Sathya Sai Advanced Medical Science Hospitals qualify them within the best hospitals in the whole of Asia.

The results, which distinguish this health system, have important precedents:

All the medical care, including hospitalization, surgery, medical services, medicines, are totally free of charge. Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba made it possible that such advanced medical processes, such as open heart operations and kidney transplants are available to the local population who do not have means nor knowledge for obtaining this sophisticated healthcare elsewhere.

The whole health system is carried out by professionals in medicine, doctors, nurses and others, with all the compassion, love and competent knowledge. All of this consequently brings about the total well being of the patient.

Hence the medical institution is truly ennobled.

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba has clearly established that the governments and the politicians of all countries should be at the service of their electorates, with their offices, powers and resources, to serve their inhabitants.

In the state of Andhra Pradesh, in India, There are areas of drought, where water is scarce and often contaminated with toxic levels of fluorine and arsenic. Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba developed a water project, which consisted of a large network of wells, tanks, tubing, pumps, and reservoirs, which provide pure and abundant water to approximately 1.5 million thirsty people in one of the most needy areas of the state.

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba is demonstrating to all the governments that they should serve the needs of their inhabitants.

What is the most fundamental need to preserve human life?

Water is the elixir of life for the human body and faith is the elixir of life for the spirit of man.

The state government has asked Bhagawan Baba to extend His immense and philanthropic undertaking to hundreds of thousands of additional residents, and now the great water project has been emulated by the government in other areas of India.

Hence, the governmental institution is truly ennobled.

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba has given his name to an organization of benevolent people, men and women from all parts of the world, in more than 150 nations, who have been moved to establish Sri Sathya Sai Organizations of service in their own countries. These organizations constitute a genuine spiritual movement, integrated by all races, religions and creeds.

The majority of the people with solid faith in this movement have never had the opportunity to go to India to see this notable place and to be in his illustrious presence. His programs are very simple, but they are very powerful, because of the dedication and sincerity of the people. They sing devotional songs of all religions; they study Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s writings and the sacred writings of all the religions of the world. They are incorporated in service programs to the downtrodden in their respective societies, promoting and practicing a program of human values called: Sathya Sai Human

Values, within their own organizations, communities and schools. The Prime Minister of India refers to this program in his telegram to Sathya Sai Baba.

The Sri Sathya Sai Organization is a spiritual movement. It is not a business entity. There are no payments, there are no quotas to be a member, nor requests for donations, nor obligatory purchases of books nor material.

This Sri Sathya Sai Organization is not a cult. Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba has said: “I am not your master. Your own conscience is your Guru and your master. Follow the dictates of your own conscience.”

This Sri Sathya Sai organization is not a religion. Sri Sathya Sai Baba says that there exists only one religion, the religion of love. People from all faiths find the programs of the organization compatible with their own religion. The organization is a spiritual movement. Spirituality is not being solely occupied with spiritual rituals. Spirituality is leading a noble and virtuous life.

Ladies and gentlemen, God is omnipresent and he has provided us with the perpetual flow of love and wisdom of discovery and inspiration. The access to this internal flow can be found in the heart of every man and woman. The Lord Jesus Christ said, “Seek and thou shalt find”.

I must tell you that every man and woman, all of us, are spiritual seekers. All of us, consciously or unconsciously, are seeking the purpose of our human lives. That makes us spiritual seekers because human life was created by God. The purpose of human life, is given by God. The resultant divine grace of our faith is given by God. Grace allows us to realize and achieve this divine purpose of human life.

On one level we are a collection of molecules integrated by atoms and sub-atomic particles in constant movement with interaction of one with another.

On another level, we are a form, which is constantly changing, ageing and interacting with its environment.

On another level we are minds conscious of its form, of the forms of others and of the environments in which they function. These minds have thoughts and emotions, and are conscious of their interactions with others and their environments. They have the capacity of memory.

Is it this that the philosopher Descartes wanted to transmit when he said in Latin. “cógito ergo sum”, I think, then I am. This “I am” refers to a collection of molecules which integrate the physical form and which creates the mind, which then gives origin to consciousness. If it is only as such, then what a deception is  this “I am”.

Moses achieved communication with God and asked the Lord, “Who are you?” and the Lord answered, “I am who I am”.

This is the real and divine “I am”. This is the “I am” with which we should identify ourselves. This is the “I am” which resides within us, in our heart of hearts. This is the “I am” which we really are.

Recently, in the last 10 or 15 years, people’s interest in the profound search of the significance and purpose of their lives has increased. There are a lot of “best sellers” which deal with these things. Lots of books have been written about the nature and significance of spiritual principles, and our interior lives.

What do all these books have in common? Why are there so many people interested in them?

These books constitute a beam of the glory of Divinity. They go deep and transmit, in different degrees, the universal perspective, reality and spirituality.

These books try to provide us with an ample perspective of life, which allows us to find the purpose and establish goals and priorities. We begin to make sense of what we are doing here, and how we can, consciously, lead a life of realization and with significance. We begin to discover the universal reality, the divine nature of our lives.

As we evolve spiritually, we begin to see ourselves, others and the world, with a divine vision, ample, without egoism, instead of with the narrow and egoistic vision of our egos. Let us consider this spiritual adventure to which we refer…. Each one of us is occupied in the adventure, which we ourselves are constructing, and at the same time, we are acting the rôle, which God gave us in this universal drama of human life. It is as though God had made a formidable motion picture, an epic film of divine proportion.

This film is a major achievement of interwoven parables and secondary plots which fit together in the most beautiful and intricate model imaginable. We are all actors in this film. It is the epic of human life.

It is as if every one of us were a separate film and the Lord has integrated these separate scenes to form a major work which demonstrates unity in the diversity of creation.

Let us now consider this perspective, the reality, and the spirituality of this divine film of human life.

The perspective of our film is defined by the basic relationships of human life, the relationships of our bodies, minds and spirits. Our bodies and minds are the tools which God gave us, which transport our   spirit and allows us to navigate in this world and interact one with another. We are the spirit, the manifestation of the God within, the inner voice, the conscience. This is our true self. Sathya Sai Baba is the Embodiment of Human Consciousness.

Our conscience is the reflection of our spirit. Our spirit is the divine spark, which cannot be extinguished. This spark gives life to our bodies and minds. It does not depend on them for its life. It remains illuminated forever, independent of the destiny of the human wrapping. In this sense, each one of us is truly eternal. Our real self is a manifestation of God. It is not affected by the death of our bodies and minds which we love so much today.

Now, we have established the perspectives of our film defining the basic relationships of the body, mind and spirit. Let us consider the reality, the totality, the story or script of this divine drama, this incomparable film, written, directed and produced by God Himself.

God alone could produce a film, which combines the small and separate epics of our individual lives, which unravel simultaneously. Each one of us is living his or her little drama, a diminutive thread in the weave of the divine creation. Each one of us corresponds to a small star in our own and isolated story.  The whole can only be completely understood by the Lord Himself. Although, we have been given the ability to understand our role in this monumental drama.

The story is as follows: each one of us is born in this world. We develop entities and relationships, which are functions of our genetic inheritance and our experience. Where and when we are born, as well as the other circumstances of our birth are governed by our past. Truly we reap what we have sewn.

We have come into this world unconscious of our true nature. We do not believe that we are divine and that we have taken a walk on this Earth. As our story unravels, we have various experiences provided by God. That brings us to become aware of our true selves. The cycles of pleasure-pain and happiness–sadness repeat themselves till we recognize that our mundane experiences are merely passing clouds.

Instead of reacting to fleeting clouds, which come and go, let us focus on the sky, which is always there. Let us learn to transcend the temporal and mundane and discover who we really are. The experience of our own and profound reality fills us with incomparable bliss.

Whereupon, we are no longer involved in conflicts. We are above anger and frustrations.

Whereupon, we will not be motivated by egoistic desires. We will be beyond hedonism and egocentricity.

Our true nature, our inner voice, our conscience governs our lives. We are happy. We are at peace. We are full of love. This is the great film!

Now we have considered the perspective of our film, the relationships of the body, mind and spirit.

We have considered the reality of our film, the little individual stories that are all part of the drama, in which we learn to appreciate who we are and experience the bliss, the peace and love which represents our true nature.

Now, let us consider the significance of the story. This is a divine drama. The significance of our story is the significance of spirituality.

The initial paragraphs of the classic novel “David Copperfield” written by Charles Dickens, say the following: Whether I end up being the hero of my own life or that this work be done by another, these pages must be shown.

Exactly from the beginning, David Copperfield aspires to being a hero, but, what is heroism? It is nobility of character. What is nobility of character? It is the result we obtain when we transcend our fascination of I and mine and our egoistic desires and mundane obsessions.

We become heroes and heroines when we have courage and determination to follow the dictates of our conscience in everything, in every moment.

The meaning of the divine drama is that life is an opportunity to undo the ego and frivolity which are created by our egos, our desires and our ignorance.

We must fight to recognize our role in the drama of life, becoming heroes and heroines.

How can we become true heroes and heroines in the divine drama, instead of being incidental characters in a secondary plot of relative insignificance?

To be or not to be, that is the real question. Is it not?

To answer this question is to define spirituality. Sathya Sai Baba teaches us the meaning of spirituality, the meaning of our film-- it is because this creation is a great fountainhead of God’s Love.

The lord has allowed himself to take a form so that this great love manifests itself. We are one with the Lord. We are drops and He is the ocean. We are the sparks and He is the fire. We are He and He is us.

The meaning of our film is that God has given us life so that we recognize these truths and then that we love all and serve all, in such a way that we get closer to realization itself. The film cannot end until all the actors become aware of their divine inheritance. It is a great film!

M.D., USA

In the context of our life, who is Sathya Sai Baba? Sathya Sai Baba, as other Divine forms manifested before him, is not like us, living a small and solitary drama, which is part of the great divine drama. Sathya Sai Baba is one with the consciousness of humanity.

He is the mirror, which reflects our spiritual progress, and the rule, which evaluates our stature. He is the mirror and the rule of humanity!

He is one with the author, the producer and director of this great divine film of life.

Sathya Sai Baba is an extraordinary man with abilities without precedents to spiritually elevate the people, reform institutions, and even more, transform society. He teaches us that the institutions of our society will be raised until we recognize and realize our innate divinity. Social institutions were not created to torment or persecute man, but to serve him and elevate him.

They cannot be manipulated by power nor by politics, but by unconditional love and service to all humanity. Sathya Sai Baba teaches that we are not merely minds and bodies acting and reacting to events, and to people around us through the ego, desires and instinct. Instead, he teaches and shows us that we are essentially divine. We learn that our conscience is our master and a reflection of the divine spark, which shines in the heart of every man and woman.

Nature is our school and unconditional love our lesson.

Our personal identities, egos, desires, minds and bodies are evanescent, although, our true essence, our true identity is eternal.

When we come to the end of our days, the divine spark within us will regress to its origin, the conflagration of God.

Ladies and gentlemen, there is nothing to fear, or season for sadness. The bliss and wisdom of Divinity is within us. It is always available. The Lord has always been in us and we in Him. The Lord is no stranger to us. We do not search the communion with Him. We only look for the reunion with Him, from whom we have originated and to whom we return. That is spirituality.

Based on our faith in God, based on our comprehension of the divine teachings, based on the understanding of ourselves, we must determine our own needs and make the choices, which carry us to the realization of our divine inheritance. Why put it to one side? It is inevitable and time is everything. That is spirituality.

Ladies and gentlemen, sharing this vision of eternal truth with you, we will understand ourselves better. Sharing our spiritual experience with you, we reaffirm our own convictions. Sharing makes us happy and it enables us to grow to the point that what we share is genuine and heartfelt, you too will be happy. This sharing is Spirituality.

The doom and gloom of tragedy in the world shadows over us all like a gray cloud, a storm omen. But the real human tragedy was revealed at the beginning of civilization. The real human tragedy is that many of us live our lives superficially, externally like machines. We react to people and events in a reflexive way. We do not contemplate the spiritual significance of our lives, or the supreme importance of time. As time passes, our body becomes weaker, less agile and our minds become forgetful and less alert. Then, the opportunity to see the eternal truth, to experience happiness and to contemplate the divine purpose in our lives, which is: to covert ourselves into a superior being, evaporates.

Time is everything!

When this day ends, when the years have passed, when finally the lights of our lives flicker, may we know of plenitude, may we not repent. We should not have to say:

I wanted to know the Lord, but I didn’t get to do so,

I wanted to follow the Lord, but I didn’t do so,

I wanted to love the Lord, but I didn’t do so,

I should have, I could have, I must have, but I didn’t.

May we not go to bed tonight, or any night having to say, I wanted to, but I didn’t.

No, better that we know That which resides in our hearts

That we follow That which sings a divine song in our soul

That we love That which is love itself.

Let us know Him now, let us follow Him now, let us love Him now and consequently, let us live a good life, faithfully following a noble path and enjoying the bliss of divine love.

My dear ladies and gentlemen.

The waves of mundane excitement and controversy crash and explode against the rocks of the immutable truth. They assume their inharmonious and tumultuous dare for an instant. Their lives are short, fugitive, and without form or substance. They are frenetic, fleeting, and evaporate rapidly forever. The timeless veracity and solidity of the rocks, with their magnificent structures, sculptured by the artistic hand of divinity, remain impassive, and although they are surrounded by the salty foam of the convulsed world, the rocks will remain forever.

Hoisting the sails, let us embark on our crossing, driven by the winds of our unconditional love and good deeds, to cross the dark sea of ignorance and mundane delusion.

Knowing that when we arrive, the atomized spray of the salty foam of this mundane convulsion will crash against the immutable rock of truth.

Let us allow our boat to be guided by the stars of courage and self-confidence, in the galaxy of faith, in the universe of God’s creation.

Knowing that when we arrive, the atomized spray of salty foam of this mundane convulsion will crash against the immutable rock of unconditional love.

In virtue of His grace, let us command these human lives, divinely conferred, which are the ships which take us on this human crossing, may we be noble correct and amorous.

Knowing that when we arrive, the atomized salty spray foam of this mundane convulsion will crash against the rock of auto-realization and God consciousness.

We pray to Thee, O’ Lord guide our ships towards You, O’ Lord!

I would like to conclude, by reading a brief excerpt from a letter, which Sathya Sai Baba sent some time ago to his western devotees:

“My beloveds! Accept my love and blessings.

“The world today is imprisoned in a supreme moral and spiritual crisis. People everywhere feel frustrated and helpless, and anxiously ask themselves what will become of humanity. Meanwhile…science has broken the barriers of time and space, has done little to promote better understanding between man and man, and between nation and nation. There has never been such distrust, hatred and violence, as that of which we are witnesses today, in almost every country.

“Men have forgotten their essential divine nature and have failed to observe those basic human qualities which raise them above the level of animals.

“In the incessant search of material acquisitions and of sensual pleasures, they have forgotten that the real source of happiness and bliss is the discovery of the soul, which lies in each one of them. “There exists, however, encouraging signs that, in many countries, there are people who are consciously following a spiritual path, as an answer to the crisis faced by humanity. There is a spiritual hunger growing everywhere.

“Without the conquest of one’s own passions and desires, and without the understanding of that Divinity which is immanent in every living thing, Man cannot achieve inner peace and bliss or harmony with the outside world. The message of “The Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man” proclaimed by Jesus Christ more than 2000 years ago, should be taken as a living faith for the achievement of real peace and the unity of humanity. The unity of the whole of creation, affirmed by the prophets and sages must be expressed in a transcendental love, which embraces everyone, independent of creed, community and language.

“This is the message from Sathya Sai Baba to all of you. May you develop this divine love and stand out as forerunners of a new era, free of egoism, greed, hatred and violence. May each one of you be a light for yourselves and hence, a light for others.

“With love, Baba”

Ladies and gentlemen, you have been an attentive and agreeable audience. We are very happy and grateful to have shared these moments with you. May God bless you!

Jai Sai Ram

I’m taken by the daffodils, this wonderful spectacle of daffodils.  It’s a bit dreary on the Welsh borders in early February and everyone is waiting for the daffodils.  In our town the daffodils are a spectacle also lining the river as they do every year.  A bit more in the ordinary rather than out of the ordinary as this story shares, but I’ll never be able to see the one without the other coming to mind now.

I hope you don’t mind my repeating a section of a poem I usually put out for the Birthday but this segment is more suited to now and a bit later at Easter if daffodils are our focus.  Accompanying this, additional to the Name of the Week, is a poem modeled on the meaning of the Suprabhatam to be found in the beginning of the Kasturi book, ‘Garland of 108 Precious Gems’, which I'm including here as Swami is just back in Puttaparthy and our thoughts will be wandering there.

From ‘A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS’

It was Good Friday, just before Easter in England.

It was unusually sunny all through

The yellow daffodils, yellow broom and yellow forsythia in full bloom

With magnolia and pear blossom.

SUPRABHATAM - Song of Spiritual Dawn

Awake Lord Awake

Awake O Son of Easwaramma

Dawn is breaking in the East

The day’s tasks await Your touch to make them pure

Awake

Awake Lord Awake

Awake in me so I may be

Aware of every moment dedicated to You

I’m nothing without You

Awake

My mind turns now to where You are come so I may see

My mind turns to Your form in Puttaparthi

Where You are building a model of how the Divine would have us be

Lord of Compassion awake in me

Awake Lord – Your splendour radiates over the entire world

If I’m thinking about this I can feel it

If I make myself chant this most beautiful of songs

I remember I must always jog into being this wakefulness

Awake Lord in me Awake

I can place myself with You in my mind

I can picture the valley full of peace

On the banks of the Chithravathi river

Awake Lord in my mind Awake

I can sense there are many anxious for Your Darshan, Your Presence

The radiance of the sunshine of this thought is spreading in me

Wake me into knowing I’m worthy too

Awake Lord in my longings Awake

I can hear singing in my mind so loud

The chanting and the happiness entrance my soul

For I hear the singing of Your Name in my heart

Awake Lord in my heart Awake

I can smell the fragrance of the flowers around Your feet

The colours, the beauty surround me inside

Can You feel the depth of my yearning – Awake

Awake Lord of my aspirations Awake

I can see now the learned are come to find solace

For their hungry minds

They recite the mantras with such diligence

Won’t You respond with Your omniscience – Awake

Awake Lord of my thoughts Awake

I hear stories and more stories all the time

And I can see everyone waiting for still more stories from You

Awake – we can’t have enough of Your Presence

Awake Lord of my being Awake

Will my heart ever look like a lotus to You

If I sing the holy hymns and hold flower garlands in my hands

Have I a chance of appealing to You

I’m told whoever recites this awakening hymn

Will attain the highest abode

This place it is said is always resplendent

As it is the home of supreme wisdom and intelligence

Divine teacher won’t You grant us all this is auspicious

As You recognise it

Bestower of wisdom, Lord of Puttaparthi too

My Lord, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Fill us with everything that is You

Translation in the book ....

O, son of Eawaramba! O, resplendent majestic One!  Dawn is breaking in the East.  The daily tasks of Divinity, which you have undertaken, have to be accomplished; therefore, Awake O Sathya Sai, Lord!

Awake, Awake, O Lord of Parthi (Puttaparthy) where He was manifested Himself and from where His splendor radiates over the entire world, and of all mankind (jagathee), Awake, O Lord of Compassion! So that the World may attain Fortune (mangala)

In the vast mansion so full of peace (Prashanthi Nilayam) on the bank of the Chitravathi river, those anxious to serve Thee are waiting for Thy Darshan.  The radiance of the Sun is spreading, illumining the worlds.

'Sri Sathya Sai Bhagawan Thava Suprabhatam' - O Sathya Sai Bhagawan, we pray for a glorious Daybreak, blessed by Thy Wakefulness

Persons who are engaged in singing aloud Thy Name and who are happy when they do so, because then they taste the nectar of devotion, have come.  May Thy benign Darshan shower Thy Grace on them.  We pray for a glorious Daybreak, blessed by Thy Wakefulness.

Bringing holy flowers with captivating colours and fragrance, for worshipping Thy Feet in the form prescribed by the scriptures. Thy Devotees are coming in, with great yearning and enthusiasm.  We pray for a glorious Daybreak blessed by Thy Wakefulness

Learned persons from other countries, moved by the yearning to have Thy Darshan, have come; they are having great delight in reciting constantly the mantras of the Vedas to glorify You.  We pray for a glorious Daybreak, blessed by Thy Wakefulness

Hearing Thy marvelous Story and Thy Fame that has reached the farthest horizons, earnest seekers of Reality have come to this place and are waiting.  We pray for Glorious Daybreak, blessed by Thy Wakefulness

Women devotees in purity equal to Sita and Sathi (Parvati) and with hearts opening out like lotuses, are singing Thy Glory though holy hymns, holding excellent flower garlands in their hands.  We pray for a glorious Daybreak, blessed by Thy Wakefulness.

Suprabhaathamidam punyam

Ye' pathanthi dine dine

The' visanthi param dhaama

Jnana vijnaana sobhithaah

Mangalam Gurudevaaya

Mangalam Jnaanadaayine

Mangalam Parthivaasaaya

Mangalam Sathya Saayine

Whoever daily recites this Wakening Hymn will attain the Highest Abode, resplendent with the supreme Intelligence as well as the supreme Wisdom. May the Divine Guru be auspicious to us; may the Bestower of Wisdom be auspicious to us; may the Lord who manifested in Parthi be auspicious to us; may Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba be auspicious to us.

PEACE (SHANTHI)

[Extracts compiled from Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's Discourses]

Shanti denotes the capacity to bear success and failure, joy and misery with perfect equanimity. It is there deep down as the very core of our being. Only thoughts of God and intense love for Him bring peace. As worldly thoughts diminish, thoughts of God increase. Normally, the mind desires these worldly things all the time. As the desires are cut out, the peace becomes stronger.

The external peace is a reflection of your internal peace; it is an echo. Peace alone is eternal Truth. It has great power. It confers eternal bliss. It is man's principal treasure. You may be of brilliant intellect, or a wealthy person or a physically strong person, but all this is useless, if you do not have peace. By absence of attachment, desire and egoism, you can achieve peace. To gain peace is the only aim of life. Not name, fame and wealth. By leading a life of contentment, one achieves peace.

Endurance with joyful resignation of the ups and downs of life is the royal road to

Peace. Everyone craves 'Sukha' and 'Shanthi'; but there is no one to instruct Youth how to win them. The Ramayana and the Mahabharatha are reservoirs of knowledge for the seekers of Peace. They are replete with examples and precepts, which are inspiring and timely. By taking the teachings to heart, Purity can be attained. The pure heart directed towards God and reflecting His image is indeed Heaven, Vaikunta or Kailasa.

You must discover your identity; then only can you have peace. You are like a man who has forgotten his name; his address and his mission in life. Realize it and try to delve deep into yourself; so that you may know who you are. Then you get security and peace. Sharpen your intellect for this purpose; and cleanse your consciousness for this purpose through Satsang, Japa, Dhyana, Naamasmarana etc.

Perfect peace means the type of peace derived as a result of the absence of desire, anger, greed and hatred. Pace must be expressed in feeling, word, posture and action; also in mind and the performance of duty - all in uniform measure. Then peace becomes perfect, the highest and most stable type. Genuine peace is won by control of senses. Pure love can emanate only from a heart immersed in peace. The realization "Everything is God" then becomes natural to you.

Peace is another name for steadiness of the mind. Peace is a sacred virtue; it is the embodiment of the Self. It is an ornament to man; the heart of the selfless one is its abode. Accumulation of riches and power cannot endow peace. Peace can come only from the fountain of peace within. How do you get Shanti (inner peace)? By knowing that you are the Atma, which has no birth or death, no joy or grief, no ups and no down. Faith in the fact that, man is an instrument in His hands for the execution of His plan, is the key to genuine peace. Only when God is the goal and guide can there be real peace. World peace can be achieved only by people investigating their inner world, removing the junk therein and setting evil urges at rest.

The foundation for real peace is, according to the Vedas, the quality of Maithree. Maithree means amicability, friendship, compassion, and kindness. It can also be taken to mean, "My Three" that is to say, my word, deed and thought shall be in accordance with words, thought and deed; that is to say; we shall speak, think and act together, without friction or faction, in an atmosphere of love and understanding. That is what is wanted in the world today: My three.

Om Sri Sai Ram

On the eve of ensuing Ugadhi and Tamil Year’s day celebrations, we thought it fit to recollect what Swami said on these days last year and have a self searching on our actions last year.

SANCTIFY YOUR ACTIONS WITH LOVE

Extracts from Swami’s last year’s (2001) Ugadhi and Tamil New Year Days Discourses

If you leave pride, you become dear to all;

If you conquer anger, you become free from worries;

You become prosperous when you control your desires;

You attain happiness only when you conquer greed.

(Sanskrit Verse)

Embodiments of Love!

So long as man is pompous and egoistic, none will love him including his own wife and children. They may pretend to love him, but it is not true love. The reason is that ego and pomp come in the way of love. As long as man has anger in him, he cannot escape misery. If man wants to be away from misery and attain peace, he has to rid himself of anger. One with desires can never attain happiness. "Less luggage more comfort." In this journey of life, desires are your luggage. You have to reduce them in order to lead a comfortable life. A greedy man can never attain prosperity. He will be happy, prosperous and blissful on the day he gives up greed. Welfare of the World Depends on Man's Thoughts and Actions today marks the commencement of the New Year Vishu. Many such New Years have gone by. Man expects the New Year to confer on him and the world at large peace, happiness and prosperity. But the welfare of the world depends on man's conduct and behaviour. Man's conduct depends on his mind. The nature of the mind depends on thoughts. Only when man's thoughts are based on truth will the world flourish. One who aspires for the welfare of the world should see to it that his thoughts and actions are in accordance with his aspirations. Good and evil, happiness and misery, merit and sin depend on man's actions. As is the action, so is the result. But today man ignores the law of action and acts as he pleases. It is easy to indulge in sinful deeds but it is extremely difficult to bear the bad results they yield. The Upanishads say, "Thasmai Namah Karmane" (salutations to action). You should offer your salutation to the action you perform so that it becomes sacred, brings you good name and contributes to the welfare of the world. This is one of the primary doctrines of the culture of Bharat. Since time immemorial, the Bharatiyas have been offering respects to the action, be it big or small, before undertaking it. A dancer pays her respects to the anklets that she wears before the commencement of her dance performance. Even Tabla players start playing on the Tabla only after offering their respects to it. Not only the educated people follow this practice, even an illiterate lorry driver offers his obeisance to the steering wheel before driving the vehicle. This is the sacredness that our culture imparts. Offer your Namaskar to the action you perform. What is Namaskar (salutation)? It is giving up the sense of ego. But today this ancient culture is being forgotten and man acts as per his whims and fancies. Consequently, he is subjected to untold misery. He feels miserable when he has to face the consequences of his evil deeds, but he does not care to enquire whether it is good or bad before undertaking any action. You should use your sense of discrimination before performing any action. Never be in haste. "Haste makes waste, waste makes worry. So, do not be in a hurry." Man attains happiness or misery based on the actions he performs. The New Year brings with it neither happiness or misery. Man faces the results of his actions. So, he should perform righteous deeds. You should perform such activities, which would benefit others. Once Emperor Asoka celebrated his birthday. On this occasion, all his vassal kings made their offerings of wealth collected through taxes from the people of their respective kingdoms. But the king of Magadha did not offer anything. So, the emperor asked the King of Magadha as to why he had come empty-handed. The King of Magadha replied, "O emperor, this year my kingdom passed through a terrible phase of drought, famine and floods. Consequently, my people suffered a lot due to the lack of food, water and shelter. In order to alleviate their suffering, I spent all the money that I had collected through taxes. I provided drinking water, I constructed schools to educate the children and established hospitals to treat the sick. As a result, I am left with nothing to offer you."

Emperor Asoka was immensely pleased with his reply. He called him by his side and said, "Oh king, what you have done is highly commendable. Water sustains life. Education develops the intellect and medical care is essential to maintain good health. You have done a great service to your people by providing these basic amenities. I am happy to note that you have done all this without a trace of selfishness and as an offering to God." Addressing the other assembled kings, the emperor said, "Many criticise the government for collecting taxes. But without collecting taxes, how can the government get money? Without money, how is it possible for the government to undertake social welfare projects? So, it is a must for the government to collect taxes. But it should see to it that the money is spent for the benefit of people. That is true service. " Today people talk of devotion without really understanding its meaning. I don't want your devotion; I want your transformation. What is devotion? Paropakarartham Idam Sareeram (this body is meant to serve others). You should understand that the body is the means to serve others and involve yourself in such activities, which will benefit others and give them happiness. Resolve to tread the path of service. Some people indulge in meaningless activities in the name of devotion and waste their time. True devotion lies in performing actions that will sanctify time. I am not asking you to serve the whole world in a big way. It is enough if you keep God in your heart and serve as per your capacity.

"Neither by penance nor by pilgrimage nor by study of scriptures nor by Japa can one cross the ocean of life. One can achieve it only by serving the poor." (Sanskrit Verse)

The path of service is superior to all the spiritual practices like Japa, Dhyana and Yoga. Only through service anyone can please God. "Deho Devalaya Prokto Jeevo Devo Sanathana" (body is the temple and the Indweller is God). So, treat every body as a temple. Have the firm conviction that God resides in every body in the form of the Atma. There is no place where God does not exist. He pervades all names and forms. Sarvata Pani-padam Tat Sarvathokshi Siromukham SarvataSruthimalloke Sarvamavruthya Thishthati (with hands, feet, eyes, heads, mouth and ears pervading everything, He permeates the entire universe).

Whatever action you undertake, do it as an offering to God. Make Proper Use of Your Senses. The body is made up of five elements and is bound to perish one day or the other. But in such a transient body there exists the eternal divinity in the form of the Atma. The all-pervasive divinity is known as consciousness, the limited form of which exists in the body as conscience. Consciousness and conscience are the same in terms of quality, only the quantity differs. You may collect water from an ocean in a tumbler, in a big pot and in a tank. The water in these three differs only in quantity, the salinity is the same in all of them. The body may be compared to a pot. All-pervasive consciousness exists in it as conscience. The whole world is pervaded by consciousness. On this basis, the Vedas declare, Sarvam Khalvidam Brahma (verily all this is Brahman).

There is no matter in this world that is not pervaded by Brahman. You are all the embodiments of Cosmic Divine. Though you see God day in and day out, you feel you haven't. It is a sign of your weakness. Have the firm faith that the body is a temple. Will anybody utilise a temple for unsacred purposes? So, make proper use of your body. There are many doors in this temple, but the doors of senses like the ears, the eyes and the mouth are very important. Do not allow any evil to enter your body through these doors

See no evil; see what is good.

Hear no evil; hear what is good.

Talk no evil; talk what is good;

Do no evil; do what is good.

Think no evil; think what is good.

This is the way to God.

The safety and sanctity of the body lies in making proper use of the five senses. The culture of Bharat has taught nine paths of devotion to sanctify the senses. They are:

Sravanam (listening), Kirtanam(singing), Vishnusmaranam (contemplating on God), Padasevanam (serving His Lotus Feet), Vandanam (salutation), Archanam(worship), Dasyam(servitude), Sneham (friendship),

Chant the name of God and perform all actions for the benefit of others.

Karmanubandheeni Manushya Loke (man is bound by action). Your life is controlled by action. You cannot live even a moment without action. Let every action of yours be a prayer to God. This is the true and eternal path prescribed by the Upanishads, and contained in the prayer, "Thasmai Namah Karmane." You should offer your prayer to the God of action so that He makes you perform noble deeds that are beneficial for one and all and lead to world peace.

Recognise the Principle of Unity Human body is meant to serve others, not to indulge in selfish deeds. As selfishness has become a part and parcel of your life, you indulge in many sinful activities. Eschew selfishness, take to selfless service. Give up attachment towards the body. Become attached to the Self. Understand that the same Self (Atma) exists in everybody. Though you find myriad bulbs glowing here, the current that is passing through them is the same. Bodies are like bulbs, the principle of the Atma is the current that is present in them. With such a feeling of oneness, make efforts to alleviate the suffering of your fellowmen.

Sage Vyasa has given the essence of 18 Puranas in the following dictum, "Paropakara Punyaya Papaya Parapeedanam" (one attains merit by serving others and commits sin by hurting them). So, "Help ever, hurt never." There is no higher Sadhana than this. This is the basis for self-realisation of man.

Self is nothing but the principle of the Atma. There is only one Self. Hence, it is said, Ekameva Advitiyam Brahma (Brahma is One without a second). It is rather surprising that man is unable to believe this principle of unity. He has faith in what is broadcast on television and radio, but does not have faith in the Self. One without faith in the Self is verily blind. In this world nothing exists except the Atma. Everybody is the embodiment of divinity.

Sarva Jeeva Namaskaram Kesavam Pratigachchati (whomsoever you salute, it reaches God). Likewise, whomsoever you criticise, it reaches God. So, do not criticise or hate anybody.

There are many people who undertake spiritual practices like Japa, Dhyana and Yoga. No doubt, they are sacred activities and one may undertake them. But it is very essential to recognise the principle of unity. There is only one God and He is omnipresent. Why are you not able to believe this all-pervasive Divinity? You are ready to believe those who put you on the wrong path. But you don't believe those who tell you the right path. This is the impact of Kali Age and the result of modern education. Modern education is limited only to bookish knowledge which is nothing but superficial knowledge. There is one book that you have to study and that is this world. Instead of learning lessons from this big book of the world, you are confining yourself to your small textbooks. Of what use are they? Do not be satisfied with mere bookish knowledge. Try to acquire practical knowledge. Only then will your life find fulfillment.

Embodiments of Love!

There is love in everybody. Love is God, live in love. When you have such sacred love in you, why are you unable to translate it into action?

Start the day with love, Spend the day with love, Fill the day with love, End the day with love. This is the way to God.

Self-confidence is the Key to Success. There are some people who hate even their parents. It is a grave mistake.

Matru Devo Bhava, Pitru Devo Bhava, Acharya Devo Bhava, Atithi Devo Bhava (revere your mother, father, preceptor and guest as God).

One who cannot respect his own parents, how can he revere God? None can match the mother in imparting sacred teachings to the children. You might have heard the story of Abraham Lincoln. As he was born in a poor family, he did not have even proper clothes to wear. While going to school, his fellow students made fun of him. Lincoln could not bear the humiliation. One day he complained to his mother, crying, "Mother, my fellow students in the school make fun at my dress. They look down upon me and say that I am not worthy of their company. His mother consoled him, saying, "Son, you are aware of our financial condition. So, don't pay heed to what others say. Uphold your self-respect. Develop self-confidence, which alone can bestow all the wealth and prosperity on you." From that day onwards, as per his mother's guidance, Lincoln grew in self-confidence, upheld his self-respect and ultimately rose to become the President of America. Though born in a poor family, Lincoln could reach such an exalted position only due to his self-confidence and self-respect. Self-respect confers grace. Do not get dejected if others subject you to criticism and ridicule. Think that whatever happens is good for you. Once you develop such equanimity, there will be none greater than you. Fill all your Actions with Love.

Embodiments of Love!

Respect and be respected. What you give to others will come back to you. You are bound to face the reflection, reaction and resound of your actions. Everything, including God-realisation, depends on your actions. Today the New Year has commenced, but it has not brought anything new with it. Today is in no way different from yesterday. If you do good now, you will reap its benefit in future. So, sanctify your actions.

Na Karmana Na Prajaya Dhanena Thyagenaikena Amrutathwa-manasu. (immortality can be attained only through sacrifice neither wealth nor progeny nor good deeds can confer it).

The bliss that you get out of sacrifice is eternal. That alone is the true wealth, and it can never diminish. In order to acquire such everlasting wealth, spend your time in the contemplation of God. Divinity pervades all that you see, hear and feel. Being in the constant company of such all-pervasive Divinity, why should you worry and fear? Why fear when I am here? (loud applause) Never be afraid of anything because God is in you, with you, above you, below you, around you. He follows you like shadow. Never forget Him. The atheists may talk as they please. No. God alone is your refuge wherever you are in a forest or in the sky; in a city or a village; on the hill or in the middle of deep sea.

Today cities have become centers of pollution and unrest. There is pollution everywhere, as man's mind has become polluted. If mind becomes pure, everything else will become pure. So, cleanse your mind. Drive out all your worries. What is the use of brooding over the past? Past is past, forget it. Future is uncertain. What is the guarantee that you will be alive till tomorrow? Don't worry about your future. Present is very important. This is omnipresent, not ordinary present. So, make the best use of present and be happy.

Students and Devotees!

Devotion does not merely mean reading sacred texts and undertaking rituals. You may continue to do them, but keep your heart always sacred. Whatever may happen, see that your faith does not waver. All the worldly things come and go like passing clouds. But the principle of love comes and grows. There is no God other than love. Love is your life, your friend, your relative, your food and your everything. Heart that is filled with love can never be polluted. Love is nectarine. Once you fill it in your heart, the poison of evil will have no place in it.

Embodiments of Love!

As you are not aware of the sacredness of love, you are wasting it by diverting it on worldly things. Love is the greatest wealth and treasure. Let the whole world be filled with love. Love alone can safeguard the country and make it prosperous. Let every action of yours be filled with love. Love begets sacred rewards.

So, Prema Mudita Manase Kaho Rama Rama Ram… (fill your heart with love and chant the Divine Name). Bhagawan concluded this beautiful Bhajan.

RIGHT CONDUCT (DHARMA)

[Extracts compiled from Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's Discourses]

Dharma is the foundation for the welfare of humanity; it is the Truth that is stable for all time. God is the embodiment of Dharma; His Grace is won by Dharma; He is ever fostering Dharma; He is ever establishing Dharma. He is Dharma itself.

Dharma is a body of principles that are fundamental to social stability and individual progress. "Dharma Moolam Idam Jagath". Dharma is the root of this world. Obey it and you are happy. One common definition of Dharma is that it is the adherence to the rule: 'Do unto others what you wish them to do unto you. Do not have a double standard. Treat all as your own self'.

The basic principles of Dharma are Sathya (Truth), Prema (Love), Sahana (Fortitude) and Ahimsa (Nonviolence). "Dharmo Rakshathi Rakshithah" – Dharma protects those that protect Dharma. Dharma means certain obligations and duties and regulations over actions, words and behavior. For example, elders have certain obligations towards younger people and vice versa; neighbors have mutual duties and rights.

The task of everyone is to do the duty that has come upon him, with a full sense of responsibility to the utmost of his capacity. There should be complete coordination between what one feels, says and does. Then work becomes worship.

How are you to decide in any particular case what is Dharma and what is not? That which does not inflict pain on you and others - that is Dharma. This follows from the recognition that same God resides in everyone and if you injure another, you are hurting the same God who is in you. Dharma enables you to come to the recognition that anything that is bad for another is also bad for you. So act in such a way that you get joy and others too get joy. Or take another standard for your actions: Make the mind, the speech and body agree in harmony. Act as you speak; speak as you feel; do not play false to your conscience. That is the Dharmic way of life.

Dharma trains you to be calm, level headed, secure in equanimity. You know the transitory nature of success or failure, riches or poverty, joy or grief. You are not elated or deflated. You are serene, unmoved. Anything that helps you to maintain this unruffled stability is Dharma. To summarize: sensual life is Adharma; the spiritual life is Dharma.

Dharma is not a matter of time and space to be modified and adjusted to the needs and pressures of the moment. It means a number of fundamental principles that should guide mankind in its progress towards inner harmony and outer peace. When man stays away from Dharma, he meets with greater harm than even physical slavery. These principles are called Sanaathana because their origins are not dated, their author is not identifiable; they are the revelations made in the clarified intellects of impartial sages. They are basic and eternal.

Dharma is the eternal source. Dharma is a great virtue. Dharma is the basis for everything. In this world nothing is higher than righteousness. Man must follow the path of Dharma, to know himself, to discard demonic qualities, to foster human qualities, to develop divine qualities and to achieve a good life.

HELP EVER, HURT NEVER

Everyone should act up to the motto: Help Ever, Hurt Never.

Every educated person should engage himself or herself in selfless service to society with humility and a pure heart. All academic distinctions or even observance of spiritual practices are of no use if there is no love in the heart. Love and compassion are inherent in every person. Each has to share this love with others. Failure to share one's love is gross ingratitude to society, to which one owes everything. One should give one's love freely to others and receive love in return. This is the deep significance of human life.

To purify the mind, one should nurture noble and sacred thoughts of service to others. One who does not hurt anybody and has feelings of love and compassion to fellow beings is the greatest of men. That is why sage Vyasa gave the essence of the eighteen Puranas (scriptures) in the aphorism: Help Ever, Hurt Never.

Help rendered, however small, if it comes from the deeper urges of service welling in the heart is as good as the offer of life itself.

Look about for chances to relieve, rescue or resuscitate. Train yourselves that you may render help quickly and well. Seva is the most paying form of austerity, the most satisfying and the most pleasurable. It springs out of Love and scatters Love in profusion. To help the helpless is the only way to please Him, to follow and reach Him.

Serve people with no thought of high or low; no Seva is high, no Seva is low, each act of Seva is equal in the eye of the Lord. It is the readiness, the joy, the efficiency, and the skill with which you rush to do it that matters. Train yourselves to serve God by serving man, in whom there is God installed in the heart. Convince yourself that the seva of man is worship of God.

Efforts to serve must spring from agony at the suffering of others and the service must be genuine effort to get rid of that anguish. Do not worry about the result. Help as much as you can, as efficiently as you can, as silently as you can, as lovingly as you can, leave the rest to God, who gave you the chance to server.

You should make every effort to avoid harming others in any circumstance. You are only hurting yourself when you hurt others. You should not use harsh words. When you develop human values, you can be free from diseases and even enjoy good health with God's Grace.

Ahimsa, the virtue of non-violence involves much more than abstention from injuring living beings. One should desist from causing pain to any living being not only by his deeds but even by his words and even in his thoughts. One should not entertain any idea of hurting or humiliating another.

Service to man will help your divinity to bloom, for it will gladden your heart and make you feel that life has been worthwhile. Service to man is service to God. For He is in every man and every living being and in every stone and stump. Offer your talents at the Feet of God; let every act be a flower, free from creeping worms of envy and egoism and full of fragrance of love and sacrifice. If you have the talent, use it for the glorification of God and do it by uplifting man. A manishi (ordinary man) gets transformed into Maharishi (sage) by engaging in selfless service.

You have to transform your life through service. You should give no room for arrogance or self-interest to the slightest extent in your service activities. Install in your heart the feeling that the service you render to anyone is service to God. Only then does service to man become service to Madhava.

Hence you should scrupulously follow the maxim:

HELP EVER, HURT NEVER.

NON VIOLENCE (AHIMSA)

[Extracts compiled from Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's Discourses]

The meaning of Ahimsa is that either in thought, word or deed, you should not cause harm to anybody. What does Ahimsa signify? It is not merely refraining from causing harm or injury to others. It implies also refraining from causing harm to himself. One who harms oneself cannot avoid harming others. How is this to be ensured? By constantly examining whether his conduct is right or wrong. For instance, in the matter of speech, one must examine whether the words are causing pain to others. One must see that the looks are not tainted by evil intentions or thoughts. One should not listen to evil talk. Hence everyone should see that they give no room for bad looks, bad hearing, bad speech, bad thoughts and actions.

You should also be careful with regard to your food. Excessive eating does violence to the body. Moderation is conducive to happiness. Ahimsa is thus what confers happiness on you. When you realize that God is in everyone, you will practice non-violence.

"Ahimsa Paramo Dharma" - Ahimsa is the most meritorious deed. Non violence is an alternate name for Truth and Love. By following Non-violence, one achieves Love. To follow the path of non-violence, it is necessary to change the mental attitude. Nobody should be harmed by mind, body or speech. By purity of thought, word and deed, one should serve even one's enemies. Overwhelm the bad and jealous by your goodness. Humility is the main quality of those who want to don the mantle of non-violence.

Listen to the whisper-or wait for the brick.

A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood
street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids
darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he
saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick
smashed into the Jag's side door! He slammed on the brakes and spun the
Jag back to the spot from where the brick had been thrown. He jumped out
of the car, grabbed some kid and pushed him up against a parked car
shouting, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck
are you doing?!" Building up a head of steam he went on. "That's a new
car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you
do it?" "Please, mister, please. I'm sorry, I didn't know what else to
do, " pleaded the youngster. "I threw the brick because no one else would
stop..." Tears were dripping down the boy's chin as he pointed around the
parked car. "It's my brother," he said. "He rolled off the curb and fell
out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up. " Sobbing, the boy asked
the executive, "Would you please help me get him back into his
wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me." Moved beyond words, the
driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He
lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his
handkerchief and wiped the scrapes and cuts, checking to see that
everything was going to be okay. "Thank you and may God bless you," the
grateful child said to him. The man then watched the little boy push his
brother down the sidewalk toward their home. It was a long walk back to
his jaguar....a long, slow walk. He never did repair the side door. He
kept the dent to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone
has to throw a brick at you to get your attention. God whispers in your
soul and speaks to your heart. Sometimes when you don't have time to
listen, He has to throw a brick at you. It's your choice: Listen to the
whisper-or wait for the brick.

Decide Today, now , this second

LOVE (PREMA)

[Extracts compiled from Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's Discourses]

Love is the basic nature that sustains human being and strengthens his resolve to march ahead. Without love man is blind; the world for him will be a dark and fearsome jungle. Love is the light that guides the feet of man in the wilderness. All the four goals of man (Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha) can be attained through the practice of love. The Atma principle expresses itself in man as Prema (Love).

Every human being needs love, inhales and exhales love. Love is the basic breath; every one is the embodiment of Love. Love knows no fear; it seeks no rewards; love is its own reward. When it is directed towards God, it is called Bhakthi. Love removes all egoism; the self is forgotten it is superseded, it is transcended. Divinity is the magnet. Humanity is the iron. Love is the force that brings them together. Nara is the iron, Narayana is the magnet. Bhakthi or love is the force that draws the two together.

God is love and can be won only through the cultivation and exercise of Love. He

cannot be trapped by any trick; He yields Grace only when His commands are followed - command to love all, serve all. Love is God, God is love. Live with Love, move with Love, speak with Love, think with Love, act with Love - this is the most fruitful Sadhana. Love is the core of Atma. Love is selflessness. Love brings people together. Love is the solvent for hardest hearts. Love is the strongest antidote for greed. Love will destroy the roots of ego.

Love is the natural state for man and all the other contrary emotions are unnatural. When you recite the Name of God, remembering His majesty, His compassion, His glory, His splendor, His presence, Love will grow within you. Its roots will grow deeper and deeper, its branches will spread wider and wider, giving cool shelter to friend and foe. Love God without reserve. To love God destroys all the barriers to Love. If you develop love, you do not need to develop anything else.

Prema must grow with every moment of Sadhana. It must sweeten every word, deed and thought of yours. Emerge from Dhyana as a person more charged with Love! Return from Bhajans with a greater measure of Love! Return from Nagarsankirtan with a firmer conviction that everything is surcharged with the same Divinity that is behind all your activity.

Love in speech is truth. Love in action is righteousness. Love in thought is peace.

Love in understanding is non-violence. There is no power greater than love in this world because it is selfless and pure. Love is Ananda; love is power; love is light; love is God. Love helps you to see God in everyone, everyone as divine.

TRUTH (SATHYA)

[Extracts compiled from Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's Discourses]

Truth is not merely telling the facts about what you see or hear or know. These are temporal truths. Facts relate to momentary appearances. Truth relates to unchanging reality. In its full sense Truth can be applied only to what comes out of your heart in its pure and unsullied form as the voice of conscience. It is true for all time - past, present and the future. It is not affected by changes in time or place. Time does not transform it, creation does not increase it, and Pralaya (Destruction) does not reduce it. History does not stain it. Truth lives eternally in full. The ancient seers called it "Ritham". It is unchanging and cannot be suppressed.

When you seek the Truth, you are seeking God. Truth is God. Truth exists; so too, God exists. Truth must be considered as life giving as breath itself. Just as a person with no breath in him becomes useless, life without Truth is useless and becomes a dwelling place of strife and grief. Believe that there is nothing greater than Truth; nothing more precious, nothing sweeter and nothing more lasting.

It is folly to think that you have to search for Truth somewhere. To know one's Self is Truth. How can man realize the Truth? He can do this only when he experiences non-dualism. As long as he is steeped in dualism (that he and divine are different) he is bound to be racked by the opposites, joy and sorrow, the real and unreal.

God wears Truth, the good seek Truth and the bad is rescued by Truth; Truth liberates; Truth is power; Truth is freedom. It is the lamp that illuminates the heart and dispels doubt and darkness. The effulgence of God is Truth.

The discovery of Truth is the unique mission of man. Man is a mixture of Maya (illusion) and Madhava (God); the Maya throws a mist which hides the Madhava, but through the action of the healthy impulses inherited from acts performed while in previous bodies or through the cleansing done by austerities in this body or through the Grace of the Lord Himself, Maya melts away; for it is just a mist which flees before the Sun. Then Nara (man) is transformed into Narayana (God) and this Bhuloka is elevated into a Prashanthi Nilayam.

Universe is dependent on Truth. If there is no Truth, there is no Universe. Truth is of eternal quality. No one can change it. Nor hide it. Truth is God. All wealth, all riches emerge from truth only. God is the embodiment of Truth. Truth alone is God's abode. Dharma permanently lives in Truth. Vedas, the repository of knowledge and wisdom emanate from Truth. Truth alone is the royal path. Truth is knowledge - Infinity, Brahman. Wherever Truth is followed, there lives Dharma. There is no Dharma higher than Truth. There is no morality higher than Truth. Through Truth, you can experience love; through love you can visualize Truth.

"Do not focus on differences of caste, faith, communities, nationalities and religions. True education focuses on equanimity amongst students. Religions may differ, but the pathway is one. Human beings may differ, but the divinity in man is one. Nations are many, but the planet is one. Stars are many, but the sky is one. Men are many but breath is one. Flowers are many, but veneration is one. All are one: be of the same nature with all. Om Sri Sai Ram

Bhagawad Gita answers our doubts about rebirth

Q.
I had a question on your view on reincarnation. I have brain damage and wonder if this carries over into future lives or if i can have normal intelligence for the next life if there is one. I was born normal but I had an accident and lost intelligence and wonder if I can be normal for the next incarnation if you believe in that."

Ans.
According to the teachings of the ancient scripture Bhagavad Gita, the brain (and the body in general) is only a mechanical device used by the spirit soul (the actual self). It is described that just as a passenger rides in a chariot, in the same way the spirit soul is riding in this vehichle of the body. The spirit soul is constitutionally full of knowledge, but due to the material covering of the body, we are subjected to ignorance. At the time of death, the eternal spirit soul transmigrates to another body according to its state of consciousness. In the Gita Krishna says:

yam yam vapi smaran bhavam
tyajaty ante kalevaram
tam tam evaiti kaunteya
sada tad-bhava-bhavitah

"Whatever state of being one remembers when he quits his body, that state he will attain without fail."

The body has no permanent connection with our self. The connection is temporary, just as our connection with our clothese are temporary. When our shirt is old and broken, we throw it away and buy a new shirt. In a similar manner, when the body is old and no longer fit for functioning, the nature discards it and provides us with a new youthful body.

Due to reactions to our activities in previous lives (karma), we either enjoy or suffer in various circumstances in the present life, while our present activities create reactions for the next lives. As one experiences these results (suffering and enjoying) we burn up our good and bad reactions. As such, in the next life, we will no longer have to suffer these same difficulties. But if one were to artificially end one's life, the reactions would carry on, as they would not have been fully exhausted in the present life.

Every activity we do creates a reaction which binds us to either good or bad results. We must learn to rise above the dualities of happiness and distress and be situated beyond the bodily identification:

matra-sparshas tu kaunteya
shitoshna-sukha-dukha-daha
agamapayino 'nityas
tams titikshasva bharata

"The nonpermanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed."

Factually we are not this body, we are an eternal spirit soul within the body. Due to false identification with this body, we take the sufferings of the body to be our own. The happiness and distress of the body come in cycles just as the seasons pass us by in cycles. They are not permanent.

When someone identifies something as his, he develops attachment, and from that attachment he begins to experience through that object. If I own a car, I feel bad when the car gets a dent. In reality there is no connection between me and the car; I am not the car. But when the car is hit, I will say "I" was hit. I have expanded my consciousness out one level and taken on the identity of the car. If some other car is dented, I have no feeling of it and practically do not care at all. This is false identification, and the same false identification is going on with this body. We are not the body, but because we possess this body, we have identified with the external covering and have become attached to it. Now when we look in the mirror we think we are the object reflecting in the glass. It is no more us than the car we drive or the clothes we wear - they are all coverings on different layers.

In the Gita Krishna raises our consciousness beyond the body to our true identity:

indriyani parany ahur
indriyebhyah param manah
manasas tu para buddhir
yo buddheh paratas tu sah
evam buddheh param buddhva
samstabhyatmanam atmana

"The senses are superior to dull matter; mind is higher than the senses; intelligence is still higher than the mind; and the soul is even higher than the intelligence."

"Thus knowing oneself to be transcendental to the material senses, mind and intelligence, one must steady the mind by deliberate spiritual intelligence."

There are many levels of covering for the soul, the lowest being that of physical matter - what we refer to as the body. The body is basically made up of various senses, which transmit information through the brain to the mind situated within the heart. The mind
is higher than the physical body, yet it is also an external covering of the soul.  This body is unique to this life, whereas our mind is carried through every body we have inhabited over a countless span of reincarnations. Higher than the mind is the discriminating factor of the intelligence, which is a reflection of our original consciousness. Higher than the intelligence is the self - an eternal spiritual entity constitutionally situated beyond matter. Our true identity is as an eternal spirit soul, but due to our associatoin with matter from time immemorial, we have become illusioned and identify our self as either the body, mind or intelligence.

The Upanishads give the following analogy:

The body is like a chariot. The senses are like five horses which pull the chariot. The reigns which control the horses are like the mind. The driver who holds the reigns is like the intelligence. And the passenger who instructs the driver is the spirit soul (the actual self). If the driver (the intelligence) holds the reigns (the mind) tightly and controls the five horses (the senses), then it is possible to attain one's proper destination. But if the driver (the intelligence) lets go of the reigns (the mind) then each of the five horses (the senses) will run off in a different direction pulling the reigns (the mind) with them, causing the chariot to be broken into many pieces.

If one's identification is only on the level of the body, then the imperfections of the body will limit one. If one's identification is on the level of the mind, then the body's limitations will not affect one, but the mental limitations will limit one. If one's identification is on the level of intelligence, then the mental limitations will not affect one. But if one's identification is on the level of the pure spirit soul situated beyond matter, there are no limitations. Such a state is known technically as jivan-mukta - or liberated from material existence while still living within the body. This is the goal of human life.

As far as intelligence is concerned, one must learn to rely not on the mechanisms of the body (brain, etc.) but on the inherent knowledge of the soul. And even if one has difficulty in doing this, Krishnas says in the Bhagavad Gita:

tesham satata-yuktanam
bhajatam priti-purvakam
dadami buddhi-yogam tam
yena mam upayanti te

"To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the intelligence by which they can come to Me."

If a person sincerely worships the Lord with love and devotion, then Krishna from within his heart gives him instructions so that he may ultimately come to Him without difficulty. This is spiritual intelligence. Material intelligence may depend on many external factors, but spiritual intelligence is inherent in the soul. It is simply covered like a mirror covered by dust. As we clean the mirror of the mind, the shining reflection gradually becomes visible to us. On the other hand, Krishna says:

nasti buddhir ayuktasya
na cayuktasya bhavana
na cabhavayatah shantir
ashantasya kutah sukham

"One who is not connected with the Supreme can have neither transcendental intelligence nor a steady mind, without which there is no possibility of peace. And how can there be any happiness without peace?"

One who has linked himself with the Supreme through meditation is situated beyond the body and mind. Such a person relies on transcendental or spiritual intelligence, not on the external functioning of matter.

DEVELOP BROAD-MINDEDNESS TO EXPERIENCE DIVINITY

(Text of the Divine Discourse delivered by Bhagawan
Sri Sathya Sai Baba in Sai Kulwanth Hall, Prasanthi
Nilayam on 24th July 2002 on the occasion of
GuruPoornima Day)

“The moon illumines the world at night and the sun
during the day. Righteousness illumines the three
worlds, and a noble son illumines his entire clan.”
				 (Telugu Poem)

During the day the sun shines resplendently and
enables people to see the world. During the night the
moon gives us light. It is Dharma that shows the ideal
path to all beings in all the three worlds. Similarly,
a noble son illumines his entire clan by his exemplary
behaviour. All these are related to the ephemeral and
transient world.

Kaanaada was the one who experienced and propagated
the truth that God is all-pervasive. Anoraneeyan
Mahato Maheeyan (Brahman is subtler than the subtlest
and vaster than the vastest). Kaanaada recognised the
existence of God in every atom. He even described God
as Anuswarupa (the very form of atom). The world
cannot exist without the atom. Earlier, nothing
existed in the universe. In the beginning, the sun,
the moon, the stars, the Earth, the sky, etc., did not
exist. There was only pitch darkness all around. The
combination of atoms resulted in the formation of hard
matter of a very high density. As a result, a lot of
heat was generated. Then all of a sudden, the hard
matter exploded with a big bang into pieces and spread
all over. This was the cause of creation. This was
also the experience of Kaanaada. The sound that
emanated when the big bang took place is "Pranava".
That is Omkara, the primordial sound. This sound of
Pranava is all-pervasive. It originated from Paramaanu
(minutest atom). There is nothing other than atom in
this creation. "How can one understand and realise
this?" This was the enquiry of Kaanaada. Ultimately,
he realised the principle of Pranava. This primordial
sound has to be contemplated upon by man for attaining
liberation.

“The primordial sound 'Pranava' is verily the Divinity
which is subtler than the subtlest and vaster than the
vastest. It is all-pervasive and stands as the eternal
witness.” (Telugu Poem)

This truth was propagated by Kaanaada. It is from this
Pranava that the sun, the moon, the Earth, the sky,
etc., originated. The atom is the fundamental basis of
the entire creation. Every human being is a
combination of atoms. There is no matter without
atoms. But modern man is unable to understand the
mystery of atoms. He considers the teachings of our
ancient Rishis as mere stories and ridicules them. He
does not have the ability and capacity to understand
the sacredness of ancient Bharatiya culture. He is not
able to understand the reality that is within him. He
installs the statues of ancient Rishis and noble souls
as a mark of respect for them but fails to understand
their teachings and put them into practice. He has to
install their sacred forms not outside but in the
altar of his heart and follow their teachings. To
which time does Kaanaada belong? Twenty thousand years
ago, people were all praise for Kaanaada and his
teachings. Kaanaada recognised the principles of
Hydrogen and Oxygen. The scientists observed that
hydrogen represents the water principle, while oxygen
represents the fire principle. Today people attach
great value to the observations made by scientists,
but fail to understand and appreciate the great truths
taught by our Rishis out of their experience.

How can one understand the atomic power? Atom is not
visible to the physical eye but it is present
everywhere. The water we drink, the food we eat, the
words we utter, the sound we hear, everything is
permeated by atoms. Though man treads on atoms, eats
atoms, drinks atoms, he is unable to understand their
mystery. He thinks that only scientists can
investigate into the nature of atoms. Atomic process
is highly sacred. By conducting a proper enquiry into
this, one can understand Divinity. This was the
teaching of Kaanaada. But today nobody is conducting a
proper enquiry to experience the atomic process.
People are leading their lives with materialistic
outlook.

Once Emperor Shivaji and his minister were going on an
evening stroll. On the way, they came across a
Buddhist monk. Immediately, Shivaji removed his crown
and prostrated at the feet of the monk. The minister
did not like this. He thought Emperor Shivaji demeaned
his own stature by placing his head at the feet of an
ordinary monk. The Emperor atonce sensed the feeling
of his minister and wanted to teach him a lesson.
Shivaji was one who followed the path of righteousness
and sacrifice and set an ideal to mankind.
One day he asked the minister to bring the head of a
goat, a sheep and of a human being. He collected the
heads of a goat and a sheep. He went to a burial
ground and cut the head of a dead person. He took them
to the emperor. Shivaji commanded him to sell them in
the market. The heads of the sheep and goat were sold
in no time, but nobody came forward to buy the head of
a human being. When this was informed to the emperor,
he said, it may be given free of cost to anybody. The
minister took the human head to the market and waited
there for a couple of days. In spite of his best
efforts, nobody was willing to accept it. When this
was conveyed to the Emperor, Shivaji said, "Oh
minister, you felt very sad when I placed my head at
the feet of a monk. Do you realise that the same would
be the fate of our heads too, when we leave our mortal
coils. They would have absolutely no value. Hence, we
should sanctify our lives by prostrating before noble
souls." Material wealth and position are momentary.
Only Truth and right conduct will remain with man and
redeem his life.

The body will be respected so long as there is So-ham
(life-breath) in it. That is the sound of Pranava.
That is the energy contained in an atom. This energy
has its origin in Divinity. None can create it. This
truth was propagated by Kaanaada. It is very difficult
to understand the power of an atom. God is in the form
of an atom. The entire world is the manifestation of
the atom. The space and sound are the expressions of
the atom. Therefore, do not neglect the principle of
atom. It has mighty power in it. Scientists have been
experimenting on this principle since long. It takes
twenty-two thousand crores of years for an atom to go
back to its source. It is rather strange that man is
unable to unravel the mystery behind an atom.
The Earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the
sun. Who is responsible for these phenomena? Nobody
can explain this. As earth rotates on its axis, we
have day and night. As it revolves around the sun, we
are able to get the food required to sustain our body.
It is the Divine Will that is responsible for all
this. It is the Divine masterplan for the benefit of
the world. Nobody has understood the Anushakti (power
of the atom) in its totality till this day. People
think that the atom has no life in it. It is a wrong
notion. The life-force that holds the entire world
together is present in the atom also. Hence it is
said, God is present in microcosm as well as in
macrocosm. Man should make an attempt to understand
the mystery of creation. He should recognise his
responsibilities and conduct himself accordingly. Man
has to necessarily understand the principle of the
atom. If he understands this, he would have understood
everything else, for atom is God. The life-principle
present in the atom is present all over the universe.
Kaanaada said that proper understanding of the
principle of atom will lead to the understanding of
Divinity. When you close your fist, you would have
caught hold of many atoms. When you release it, the
atoms will travel in different directions. The sound
of Pranava that emerges from the atoms will be as
minute as the particles themselves.

Devotees offer their prayers to God. Some people doubt
the efficacy of prayer. But, in fact any mighty task
can be accomplished through prayer. It makes
impossible things possible. Here is a small example.
There has been a swelling on My cheek for the past ten
days. I never take any medicine. Yesterday I observed
that the attention of all those assembled here was
focused on My cheek, not on Me! They were worried that
the swelling had still not reduced and that Swami was
undergoing a lot of pain. After I delivered the
Valedictory Discourse, I retired to My room. As I was
resting, a number of devotees were praying to Me that
I should cure Myself at least by the auspicious day of
Guru Purnima. All their prayers reached Me. When I got
up in the morning, the swelling reduced and there was
absolutely no pain whatsoever. In fact, I had not
willed that it should be so. It is the result of the
prayers of devotees. Yesterday, many did not even take
food. With tears in their eyes, they were praying
continuously. My thoughts went to them for a moment.
But I never willed that I should be cured. I never do
it. Why? As Sanjay Sahni rightly pointed out, "I and
you are one." You are not different from Me. This is
not My body, it is yours. So, it is your
responsibility to take care of this body. I never
think of My body and its well-being. I never make a
Sankalpa (Will) that such and such a thing should
happen, so far as My body is concerned. There is no
selfishness in Me from head to toe. That is why I have
got every right to declare that I and you are one.

Every man is endowed with the same atomic power. He
has to make every effort to understand this. Since
ancient times, man got accustomed to worshipping God
in the form of idols. You worship Rama and Krishna in
the form of idols. But can you see their physical
forms now? No. You worship Easwara. But are you able
to see Him? The forms of Rama, Krishna, Easwara are
ever existing. But man is not able to visualise them
because of his narrow-mindedness. Expansion of the
heart is divine; narrow-mindedness is death. One with
narrow-mindedness is verily a living corpse. One
should always be broad-minded. You find divinity
installed in the heart of one with expansive feelings.

Saints and sages of yore undertook various types of
spiritual practices. Kaanaada also performed penance.
Ultimately, he realised that he had originated from
the atom and would merge into it. He gave up body
attachment. Today man is leading a materialistic life
and striving for his own selfish ends. So long as
there is selfishness in man, he will not be able to
understand the divine principle of atom. One may do
Japa, Dhyana and penance, but one's mind should always
be steadily fixed on the principle of the atom.
Everything is contained in this. Our body, mind,
intellect, etc., are nothing but the manifestations of
the atom which is verily divine.

God certainly listens to the prayers of His devotees.
Some people hesitate to pray lest their prayers should
cause inconvenience to God. They are mistaken, for God
can never be put to any inconvenience whatsoever. God
has no suffering at all. He considers devotees'
happiness as His happiness. However, your happiness
results from material things; whereas My happiness is
related to the principle of Atma. I am pleased by the
smallest of small offering if it is made with Love.
Your tiny offering will assume gigantic proportions to
Me. On the other hand, you are not satisfied in spite
of receiving mighty favours.

What is the significance of Guru Purnima? Guru is one
who illumines the path to divinity. Purnima stands for
the cool full moon light. Full moon stands for a mind
with total illumination. It is spotless and
blemishless. Even if there is a trace of blemish in
the mind, it will lead to darkness. It cannot give you
total bliss.

Embodiment of Love!

Let your mind be filled with the radiance of divine
love. Acquiring mere textual knowledge is of no avail.
What you have studied is only a fraction of the total
knowledge. Yet you feel proud about it. Your worldly
education is insignificant compared to divine wisdom.
You cannot attain God with your education, power and
wealth. He is accessible by Love and Love alone. You
can experience Him only when you develop Love.
Devotion means to Love God wholeheartedly.

Embodiment of Love!

What is it that you are supposed to know on this day
of Guru Purnima? You must understand that God is in
you, with you, around you, above you, below you. In
fact, you are God. Recognise this truth in the first
instance. Do not entertain excessive desires and
become beggars. Do your duty sincerely. That is the
true Sadhana. When you are in office, do office work
only; do not think of your family matters. Likewise,
when you are at home, take care of the needs of your
wife and children. Do not make your home an office.
But today because of too much work in office, people
take office-papers to their homes to complete their
work. They are thus facing difficulties because they
mix up their office work, household work, business and
spiritual matters.

Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakasipu were great scientists.
The modern scientists have travelled only up to moon,
but Hiranyakasipu travelled up to the sun. He even
touched the pole star and consequently suffered. One
may be a great scientist, but one will be put to
suffering if one crosses one's limits. The saints made
concerted efforts to experience Divinity. One should
develop broad-mindedness in order to experience
Divinity.

Man has death but the mind has no death. Whatever he
does during his lifetime are imprinted on his mind and
get carried over to the next birth. None can
understand the nature of the mind. Some people think
that suicide is the only way of putting an end to all
their troubles. They think, "It is the mind that is
responsible for our suffering. Let us put an end to
it." It is the worst of sins. The mind cannot be
killed so easily. One should never entertain such low
ideas. One should be prepared to face any difficulties
with fortitude and strive hard to sanctify one's life.
Atma is God and God is Atma. Prahlada said, "Never
doubt that God is here and not there. He is present
wherever you search for Him."

“The Atma is eternal without birth or death. It has no
beginning, middle or end. It is omnipresent as the
witness of every being.” (Telugu Poem)
Hence, man should lead his life with the conviction,
"I am God. Only body has death. I have neither birth
nor death." So long as he is alive, his love is
dedicated to God and God alone. One day a rich man
came to meet Baba at Shirdi. He had stuffed his pocket
with a number of currency notes. Baba decided to test
his devotion. He called Shyam, who used to be by His
side always, and said, "I need five rupees very
urgently. Go and ask Patel." After sometime, Shyam
returned saying that Patel was not at home. Baba asked
him to approach another businessman. Shyam again
returned with empty hands. Baba sent him to another
person. Patel was a witness to all this, but he did
not volunteer to give five rupees from his pocket. He
had no spirit of sacrifice. For many people, money is
God; politics is God. Will the money or politics
follow them after their death? What are they going to
achieve? What is the purpose of life? Having attained
human birth, do not waste it in trivial pursuits. Take
part in activities that are beneficial to society. Do
not misunderstand Me when I say this. Politics is the
root cause of pollution of the world. The minds of
even small children are polluted by politics.
Conflicts and agitations have become the order of the
day. There is no unity even between husband and wife.
Prior to Independence, people did not suffer this
much. In those days, the conflict was between the
whites and the coloured, whereas today the non-whites
are quarrelling amongst themselves in factions. This
is not what is expected of people today. Shun evil
qualities and develop noble feelings.

Embodiment of Love!

Fill your lives with Love and end your lives with
Love. That is true human life. The Upanishads have
accorded great value to human life. Maanava is one who
has to be loved and respected. He has to welcome
happiness as well as sorrow with equanimity. In China
there is a proverb which says, "Difficulties are our
friends, let us welcome them." The happiness that we
get out of difficulties cannot be obtained anywhere
else. Na Sukhat Labhyate Sukham (one cannot derive
happiness out of happiness). Many people come to Me
saying they are facing lot of difficulties. I feel
like laughing at them. I want to know what
difficulties and sorrow mean. But they do not come
anywhere near Me. I keep telling the devotees that
they should not be bogged down by difficulties. I
never give any scope for sorrow. This body has entered
its 77th year. Till this day, I never experienced
sorrow even for a moment. Man aspires for bliss. He is
the embodiment of bliss. Bliss is his true property.
Such being the case, why should he give scope for
sorrow? It is because he has not understood his true
nature. Worldly relationship comes and goes. But that
which comes and grows is the principle of Love.
Embodiment of Love!

Right from this day, try to reduce your attachment to
the world to the extent possible. Be happy and make
others happy. Do not hurt anybody. Consider
difficulties as passing clouds. You have developed
family relationships and there are bound to be some
worries. But do not be perturbed by them. When you
look at the vast sky, you find many clouds. Likewise,
in the sky of your heart there are clouds of
attachment. They just come and go. Do not worry about
them. What is the shape of worry? It is a mentally
created fear. It is the result of your imagination.
Every man is bound to encounter difficulties and
losses. We should face them with courage.

Remember what Shivaji taught his minister. This body
will be respected so long as there is life in it. Once
the life ebbs away, it will not have any value. The
same was stated by Duryodhana during his last moments.
He said, "I was respected so long as I was alive.
Tomorrow crows and dogs are going to feast on me."
Whatever has to happen will happen. Lead a respectable
life while you are alive. Develop divine feelings in
you. Only then you would have led a true human life.
Today man is leading a purely materialistic life. This
is also necessary to a certain extent. Remember that
there is the transcendental principle even in this
secular life.

Embodiment of Love!

From this day of Guru Purnima, make your hearts
sacred. Just as you wave away the mosquitoes that bite
you, brush aside any difficulties that assail you. Do
not be depressed by sorrow nor be elated by happiness.
Develop equanimity and strive to attain Divinity.

Here Bhagawan sang the Bhajan, "Vahe Guru Vahe Guru
Vahe Guru Ji Bolo …" and then continued the discourse.

There is only one Guru. There cannot be two Gurus -
inner Guru and external Guru. Guru is one who treads
along the path of Truth. He is truth himself.

“Gurur-Brahma Gurur-Vishnu Gurur Devo Maheswara;
Guru Sakshat Param Brahma Thasmai Sri Gurave Namaha.”

(Guru is Brahma, Guru is Vishnu, Guru is Maheswara.
Guru is verily the supreme Brahman. So, salutations to
the Guru.)

You are the embodiment of Divine Trinity - Brahma,
Vishnu, Maheswara. Hence, Guru is not separate from
you. You are everything. Let your concentration not
waver. Let it be steadily fixed on your goal. Be he a
student, a celibate, a householder or a renunciant,
the goal is one and same for all. Contemplate on the
principle of So-ham that your inner voice teaches. Say
Aham Brahmasmi (I am Brahma). There is nothing wrong
in this statement. Some people have a mistaken notion
that to say so, is a sign of egoism. In fact, that is
not ego at all. It is your right. To think that you
are a mere human being amounts to demeaning yourself.
You are the embodiments of God. Develop such faith and
become God. There cannot be any bad qualities in God.
So, you should lead a pure, steady and selfless life.
See good, speak good and do good. You should be an
ideal to everybody. No benefit accrues from worship if
you do not purify your heart. You are worshipping
Swami and have been visiting Swami for a number of
years.

But is there any transformation in you? You are coming
and going without any aim. Such people need not come
here at all. Wherever you are, do your Sadhana. When
you come here, you should imbibe divine feelings and
become divine. Gradually reduce your attachment to the
world. The world will not go with you when you die.
You cannot even take away a fistful of dust. You can
take only the virtues you have cultivated. Respect
your teachers, elders and parents. Matru Devo Bhava,
Pitru Devo Bhava, Acharya Devo Bhava, Atithi Devo
Bhava (revere your mother, father, preceptor and guest
as God). Consider everyone as God. There is God even
in a dog. Have faith that God is all-pervasive. There
is no greater Sadhana than this. When people develop
such faith, the whole nation will be blessed with
plenty, prosperity and all auspiciousness. Fill your
heart with divine feelings. This is what you have to
learn today.

Bhagawan concluded His Discourse with the Bhajans,
"Hari Bhajan Bina …", "Subramanyam Subramanyam …"

The Revelation

17 May 1968
(Sathya Sai Speaks VI, 210-213)

[Editor's note. This is the last part of Sathya Sai Baba's discourse at the World Conference of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organizations in Bombay, 17 May 1968. It states plainly and directly that Sathya Sai Baba is an incarnation of God, come to restore righteousness (dharma).]

Since at this place those who have devotion are gathered and people of all nations have come, I cannot but tell you one fact. World conferences dedicated to religion or spiritual problems have no doubt been held before; also, conferences of followers of particular faiths. But these have been held only after the demise of the founders and divine inspirers. This is the very first time that a World Conference is held, of persons devoted, while the incarnation is present before every one, with the body assumed for the purpose, bearing the name that is chosen for it by Itself. I must tell you this fact, because ninety-nine persons out of hundred among you do not know my Reality. You have come here drawn by diverse needs, a taste for spiritual matters, eagerness to develop the institutions to which you are attached, admiration or affection, love or reverence or a spurt of enthusiasm to join others and share with others your own exultation.

In truth, you cannot understand the nature of my Reality either today or even after a thousand years of steady austerity or ardent inquiry even if all mankind joins in that effort. But, in a short time, you will become cognizant of the bliss showered by the divine Principle, which has taken upon itself this sacred body and this sacred name. Your good fortune, which will provide you this chance, is greater than what was available for anchorites, monks, sages, saints and even personalities embodying facets of divine Glory!

Since I move about with you, eat like you, and talk with you, you are deluded into the belief that this is but an instance of common humanity. Be warned against this mistake. I am also deluding you by my singing with you, talking with you, and engaging myself in activities with you. But, [at] any moment, my Divinity may be revealed to you; you have to be ready, prepared for that moment. Since Divinity is enveloped by humanness you must endeavor to overcome the Maya (delusion) that hides it from your eyes.

This is a human form in which every divine entity, every divine principle, that is to say, all the names and forms ascribed by man to God, are manifest. ... Do not allow doubt to distract you; if you only install, in the altar of your heart, steady faith in my Divinity, you can win a vision of my Reality. Instead, if you swing like the pendulum of a clock, one moment devotion, another moment disbelief, you can never succeed in comprehending the truth and win that bliss. You are very fortunate that you have a chance to experience the bliss of the vision of the Sarvadaivathwa swaroopam (the form that is all forms of the Gods) now, in this life itself.

Let me draw your attention to another fact. On previous occasions when God incarnated on earth, the bliss of recognizing Him in the incarnation was vouchsafed only after the physical embodiment had left the world, in spite of plenty of evidence of his grace. And the loyalty and devotion they commanded from men arose through fear and awe at their superhuman powers and skills or at their imperial and penal authority. But ponder a moment on this Sathya Sai Manifestation; in this age of rampant materialism, aggressive disbelief and irreverence, what is it that brings to it the adoration of millions from all over the world? You will be convinced that the basic reason for this is the supra-worldly Divinity in human form.

Again how fortunate you are that you can witness all the countries of the world paying homage to India (Bharatha) you can hear adoration of Sathya Sai's name reverberating throughout the world, even while this body is existing --not at some future date but when it is with you, before you. And again, you can witness very soon the restoration of the Ancient and Eternal Religion [Sanathana Dharma] to its genuine and natural status, the righteousness [dharma] laid down in the Vedas for the good of all the peoples of the world. The revival of Vedic dharma is the Sai Sankalpa (the resolve that Sai has) not only drawing people toward me, attracting them by the manifestation of my shakti (power) and samarthya (capacity). This is not a bhramathathwam (phenomenon of delusion). This phenomenon will sustain truth, it will uproot untruth, and in that victory make all of you exult in ecstasy. This is the Sai sankalpa (will).

Some persons, even those who have reached a certain stage of leadership and authority, have started exchanging the Vedic formulae and the principles of Indian (Bharathiya) culture for lucre, selling them, in fact; and westerners too are inclined to purchase them! These truths and discoveries are not merchandise to be sold and bought. Therefore, I am going to western countries soon, in order to apprise them of their real worth and put a stop to this bargaining. Already, the authorities of universities in the United States of America and the leaders of the students of those universities have written that they are eager to welcome me and they have drawn up programs for me. It was only yesterday that passports for my visit to Africa have been brought, praying that I may visit those countries soon; I am proceeding to Africa before the month of June.

So utilize the chance of association with me as much as possible, and endeavor as quickly and as best as you can to follow the directions that I have been giving. Obeying my instructions is enough; it will benefit you more than the most rigorous asceticism. Practice Sathya, dharma, santhi and prema, which are dear to me; resolve to keep those ideals before you ever, in all your thoughts, words and deeds. That can confer on you the summum bonum of mergence in the supreme substance of Divinity.

Om Sri Sai Ram

The Milestone Speech – A Treasure to be cherished in mind and heart for all Sai devotees and for the whole world

Forty-Third Birthday Discourse, 23 November 1968.
(Appears in Sai Baba - Holy Man and the Psychiatrist, by Samuel Sandweiss.)

[IN THIS DISCOURSE, SWAMI SPEAKS FOR ALMOST THE FIRST TIME IN A MAJOR DISCOURSE ABOUT HIS BEING THE AVATHAR AND PROCLAIMS HIS MISSION ON EARTH: THE ESTABLISHMENT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.]

For the protection of the virtuous, for the destruction of evildoers and for establishing righteousness on a firm footing, I incarnate from age to age. Whenever disharmony (asanthi) overwhelms the world, the Lord will incarnate in human form to establish the modes of earning peace (Prashanthi) and to reeducate the human community in the paths of peace. At the present time, strife and discord have robbed peace and unity from the family, the school, the society, the religions, the cities, and the state.

The arrival of the Lord is also anxiously awaited by saints and sages. Spiritual aspirants (Sadhus) prayed and I have come. My main tasks are fostering of the Vedas (Hindu scriptures) and fostering of the devotees. Your virtue, your self-control, your detachment, your faith, and your steadfastness: these are the signs by which people read of my glory. You can lay claim to be a devotee only when you have placed yourself in my hands fully and completely with no trace of ego. You can enjoy the bliss through the experience the Avathar confers. The Avathar behaves in a human way so that mankind can feel kinship, but rises into his superhuman heights so that mankind can aspire to reach the heights, and through that aspiration actually reach him. Realizing the Lord within you as the motivator is the task for which he comes in human form.

Avathars like Rama and Krishna had to kill one or more individuals who could be identified as enemies of the righteous (dharmic) way of life, and thus restore the practice of virtue. But now there is no one fully good, so who deserves the protection of God? All are tainted by wickedness, so who will survive if the Avathar decides to uproot? Therefore, I have come to correct the intelligence (Buddhi), by various means. I have to counsel, help, command, condemn and stand by as a friend and well wisher to all, so that they may give up evil propensities and, recognizing the straight mark, tread it and reach the goal. I have to reveal to the people the worth of the Vedas, the Sastras and the spiritual texts, which lay down the norms. If you will accept me and say, "Yes," I too will respond and say, "Yes, yes, yes." If you deny and say "No," I also echo "No." Come, examine, experience, have faith. This is the method of utilizing me.

I do not mention Sai Baba in any of my discourses, but I bear the name as Avathar of Sai Baba. I do not appreciate in the least the distinction between the various appearances of God: Sai, Rama, Krishna, etc. I do not proclaim that this is more important or that is less important. Continue your worship of your chosen God along lines already familiar to you, then you will find that you are coming nearer to me. For all names are mine, and all forms are mine. There is no need to change your chosen God and adopt a new one when you have seen me and heard me.

Every step in the career of the Avathar is predetermined. Rama came to feed the roots truth (Sathya) and righteousness dharma. Krishna came to foster peace shanthi, and love prema. Now all these four are in danger of being dried up. That is why the present Avathar has come. The righteousness that has fled to the forests has to be brought back into the villages and towns. The anti-righteousness that is ruining the villages and towns must be driven back into the jungle.

I have come to give you the key of the treasure of bliss ananda, to teach you how to tap that spring, for you have forgotten the way to blessedness. If you waste this time of saving yourselves, it is just your fate. You have come to get from me tinsel and trash, the petty little cures and promotions, worldly joys and comforts. Very few of you desire to get from me the thing that I have come to give you: namely, liberation itself. Even among these few, those who stick to the path of spiritual practice (sadhana) and succeed are a handful.

Your worldly intelligence cannot fathom the ways of God. He cannot be recognized by mere cleverness of intelligence. You may benefit from God, but you cannot explain him. Your explanations are merely guesses, attempts to cloak your ignorance in pompous expressions. Bring something into your daily practice as evidence of your having known the secret of the higher life from me. Show that you have greater brotherliness. Speak with more sweetness and self-control. Bear defeat as well as victory with calm resignation, I am always aware of the future and the past as well as the present of every one of you, so I am not so moved by mercy. Since I know the past, the background, the reaction is different. It is your consequence of evil deliberately done in the previous birth, so I allow your suffering to continue, often modified by some little compensation. I do not cause either joy or grief. You are the designer of both these chains that bind you. I am the embodiment of bliss (Ananda Swarupa). Come, take bliss (ananda) from me, dwell on that bliss, and be full of peace (shanthi).

My acts are the foundations on which I am building my work, the task for which I have come. All the miraculous acts, which you observe, are to be interpreted so. The foundation for a dam requires a variety of materials. Without these it will not last and hold back the waters. An incarnation of the Lord has to be used in various ways by man for his uplift.

The Lord has no intention to publicize himself. I do not need publicity, nor does any other Avathar of the Lord. What are you daring to publicize? Me? What do you know about me? You speak one thing about me today and another tomorrow. Your faith has not become unshakable. You praise me when things go well and blame me when things go wrong. When you start publicity you descend to the level of those who compete in collecting plenty by decrying others and extolling themselves.

Where money is calculated, garnered or exhibited to demonstrate one's achievements, I will not be present. I come only where sincerity and faith and surrender are valued. Only inferior minds will revel in publicity and self-aggrandizement. These have no relevance in the case of Avathars. Avathars need no advertisement.

The establishment of righteousness (dharma): that is my aim. The teaching of dharma, the spread of dharma: that is my object. These miracles, as you call them, are just a means toward that end. Some of you remark that Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (an Indian saint) said that yogic powers (siddhis) are obstructions in the path of the spiritual aspirant  (Sadhaka) Yes, yogic powers may lead the spiritual aspirant astray. Without being involved in them he has to keep straight on. His ego will bring him down if he yields to the temptation of demonstrating his yogic powers. That is the correct advice, which every aspirant should heed. But the mistake lies in equating me with a Sadhaka, like the one whom Ramakrishna wanted to help, guide and warn. These yogic powers are just in the nature of the Avathar -- the creation of things with intent to protect and give joy is spontaneous and lasting. Creation, preservation, and dissolution can be accomplished only by the Almighty ... no one else can.

Cynics carp without knowledge. If they learn the Sastras or scriptures, or if they cultivate direct experience, they can understand me. Your innate laziness prevents you from the spiritual exercises necessary to discover the nature of God. This laziness should go. It has to be driven out of man's nature in whatever shape it appears. That is my mission. My task is not merely to cure and console and remove individual misery but is something far more important. The removal of misery and distress is incidental to my mission. My main task is the reestablishment of the Vedas and Sastras (spiritual scriptures), and revealing the knowledge about them to all people. This task will succeed. It will not be limited. It will not be slowed down. When the Lord decides and wills, his divine will cannot be hindered.

You must have heard people say that mine is all magic. But the manifestation of divine power must not be interpreted in terms of magic. Magicians play their tricks for earning their maintenance, worldly fame, and wealth. They are based on falsehood and they thrive on deceit, but this body could never stoop to such a low level. This body has come through the Lord's resolve to come. That resolve is intended to uphold truth (sahya). Divine resolve is always true resolve. Remember there is nothing that divine power cannot accomplish. It can transmute earth into sky and sky into earth. To doubt this is to prove that you are too weak to grasp great things, the grandeur of the universe.

I have come to instruct all in the essence of the Vedas, to shower on all this precious gift, to protect the ancient wisdom (sanathana dharma) and preserve it. My mission is to spread happiness, so I am always ready to come among you not once, but twice or thrice -- as often as you want me. Many of you probably think that since people from all parts of India, and even foreign countries outside India, come to Puttaparthy, they must be pouring their contributions into the coffers of the Nilayam (Prashanthi Nilayam: name of Sai Baba's ashram). But let me declare the truth. I do not take anything from anyone except their love and devotion. This has been my consistent practice for the last many years. People who come here are giving me just the wealth of faith, devotion, and love. That is all.

Many of you come to me with problems of health and mental worry of one sort or another. They are mere baits by which you have been brought here. But the main purpose is that you may have grace and strengthen your faith in the divine. Problems and worries are really to be welcomed, as they teach you the lessons of humility and reverence. Running after external things produces all this discontent. That type of desire has no end. Once you have become a slave to the senses, they will not leave hold until you are dead. It is an unquenchable thirst. But I call you to me and even grant worldly boons so that you may turn God-ward. No Avathar has done like this before, going among the masses, counseling them, guiding them, consoling them, uplifting them, and directing them along the path of truth, righteousness, peace and love (Sathya, dharma, shanthi and prema).

My activities and movements will never be altered, whoever may pass whatever opinion on them. I shall not modify my plans for the establishment of righteousness  (dharmasthapana), my discourses, or my movements. I have stuck to this determination for many years and I am engaged in the task for which I have come: that is, to inculcate faith in the path of the highest spiritual peace (Prashanthi). I shall not stop or retract a step.

Not even the biggest scientist can understand me by means of his laboratory knowledge. I am always full of bliss. Whatever may happen, nothing can come in the way of my smile. That is why I am able to impart joy to you and make your burden lighter. I never exult when I am extolled, nor shrink when I am reviled. Few have realized my purpose and significance, but I am not worried. When things that are not in me are attributed to me, why should I worry? When things that are in me are mentioned, why should I exult? For me it is always, "Yes, yes, yes." If you give all and surrender to the Lord, he will guard and guide you. The Lord has come for just this task. He is declaring that he will do so, and that it is the very task that has brought him here. I know the agitations of your heart and its aspirations, but you do not know my heart. I react to the pain that you undergo and to the joy that you feel, for I am in your heart. I am the dweller in the temple of every heart. Do not lose contact and company, for it is only when the coal is in contact with the live embers that it can also become live ember.

Cultivate nearness with me in the heart and it will be rewarded. Then you too will acquire a fraction of that supreme love. This is a great chance. Be confident that you will all be liberated. Know that you are saved. Many hesitate to believe that things will improve, that life will be happy for all and full of joy, and that the golden age will recur. Let me assure you that this Divine body (Dharmaswaroopa) has not come in vain. It will succeed in averting the crisis that has come upon humanity.

Health, Diet and Divinity

Bhagawan’s Divine Discourse given on 3rd of June 1995 in the Sri Sathya Sai Hospital, at Whitefield, India. (Courtesy of  "SAISPANDAN" - Journal of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences)

Not by penance, nor by baths In sacred waters, nor by studying of scriptures, or by Japa can the ocean of   worldly existence (the cycle of birth and death) be crossed. It can be done only by Service to good people (Sanskrit Sloka)

Man seeks to cross the ocean of Samsara by penance, pilgrimages to sacred shrines, scriptural studies and exercises in meditation. But all these are of no avail without service to good people. All these spiritual exercises are comprehended by Seva  (service). For the achievement of the four main goals of life, (the Purusharthas of DHARMA-Right conduct, ARTHA- acquisition of wealth, KAAMA - fulfillment of desires, and MOKSHA- Liberation), health is essential. Without good health a man cannot accomplish even the most trivial thing. Hence, health is wealth.

CAUSE OF DISEASE: However, because of the influence of the Kali age, man is a prey to all kinds of ailments and has no peace of mind despite the possession of every conceivable kind of wealth and comforts. There is no dearth of doctors. Inspite of the availability of so many amenities, why is man afflicted with disease? Indeed, more than physical ailments, mental diseases are growing limitlessly. Mental sickness caused by tension and worry gives us so many bodily ailments. Man today is afflicted with discontent. As one set of desires is satisfied, other desires go on cropping up If desires are reduced.  Contentment will grow. Moreover, because of the perversions of the Kali age, the five basic elements (ether, air, fire, water and earth) are polluted.  The water we drink is impure. The air we breathe is polluted. As a consequence the mind gets polluted.

MATTER AND MIND: Today man has to understand the true relationship between matter and mind. When one is asked about the mind, he says, "Don't mind". When he is asked about matter, he answers: "It doesn’t matter". By this sort of casualness man is failing to understand mind and matter. Only when man understands the nature of the mind can he recognize the true nature of humanness. What is the mind? It is not something negative.  It is positive. It represents the power of the Atma, the power of thought  (Sankalpa).  It can travel any amount of distance in space. It is capable of exploring the powers of atom. The mind is capable of recognising the truth that is valid for the three categories of Time-the past, the present and the future.  The mind is therefore very essence of life. It is the source of all strength.  Man today is indifferent to the importance and the powers of the mind.

SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS: Man is seeking happiness from birth to death. The search starts with education. But education does not confer happiness. He desires a job but that does not make him happy.  He then seeks marriage as the means to happiness. Happiness eludes him because the wife claims equal rights. Then he declares, "My life is a total darkness".  It is the ego that is the cause. As a man grows, his egoism also grows. One after another, desires go on increasing. Their fulfillment doesn't bring him the happiness he seeks.  Where is this happiness or bliss (ananda) to be found? It does not exist in material objects. It is not to be found in the pleasures. The truth is that man is the embodiment of bliss. He is searching for it outside himself. This is the mark of ignorance. When he is the embodiment of bliss, how can he secure bliss outside himself? Today, inspite of all his wealth, man is unhappy. He is perpetually racked by lack of peace. Devotees come here from all parts of the world. Each of them asks: "I want peace". Here are three words  "I", "want",  "peace". "I" is ego. "Want" is desire. Remove the ego and desire, you will have peace. Ego and desire have enveloped peace when the covering is removed, peace will manifest itself.

HEALTH AND HAPPINESS: Man can lead a blissful life only when he enjoys health. Wealth can offer comforts but not peace.  Wealth can provide a multi-storeyed mansion but not sound sleep. Wealth can provide bodily comforts, but physical comforts do not produce bliss.  Air conditioners and mattresses may give comfort to the body. But when there is no peace of mind, of what use are these comforts? The body is like a water bubble, the mind is like a monkey, don't follow the body or the mind, and follow the conscience. Man today is not following the conscience. He is sticking to the body and mind, which are useless. He must enquire into the problem, "Who am I?" He will discover that the body, the senses and the mind are all the instruments and he is their master.  The master has today become a slave of his body and mind, which should be his servants. You are the soul. Maker it the basis for all your actions.

HUMAN VALUES: Today man is forgetting his essential humanness. The first requisite is for man to realise Human Values Truth, Righteousness, Peace and Love. For a bulb to light, you need a connecting wire, a switch and electric current. For man, that current is Truth or God. It is energy. This divine energy has to flow through the wire of Dharma (Righteousness), reach the bulb of Peace (Shanthi) and produce the light of Love. Love is God. Live in Love. Love is everything. Without Love, Life is a living death for man. Love expresses itself in many forms in relation to different persons, but is essentially one. Today Love is tainted by selfishness, whether in relation to mother, the spouse or the children or others. Man's selfishness is polluting the entire society. Attachment to others is natural. But there should be a limit to it. When this limit is exceeded, it becomes a disease. This is true in every case. Because of man's excessive desires, he is prone to diseases of every kind.

HEAD AND FOOD: The most common source of illness amongst people today is  "Tension". What is the cause of tension? It is indulgence in excess of various kinds. Men must learn to moderate the hectic pace of living. Hurry causes worry and worry causes disease. "Hurry, worry and curry (fatty food)" are the causes of heart diseases. Therefore the first requirement is control of food and head  (the mind). When you control these two, there will be no room for illness.

IMPORTANCE OF THE EYE: Today the new operation theatre has been inaugurated in our hospital. Doctors know that in the eye there are millions of cells that react to light rays. If any of these cells are affected, the vision is affected. For man the eye is the most important organ for comprehending the Universe. Hence the eye has to be regarded as a sacred instrument. You cannot change creation, but by changing your vision you can get the proper view of creation. Here is an illustration.  Once there was a king, who developed an acute stomach trouble. All the medicines administered by doctors were of no avail. He then approached a great yogi, who told him that for his stomach ailment he had to treat the sight. He should see nothing but green everywhere. The Yogi left and the king ordered that all places in his kingdom should be painted green. Some time later, the yogi returned and found that people were engaged in splashing green everywhere. When asked for the reason, they told him that they were carrying out the king’s orders. The yogi went to the king and told him that to see everything green, all that was needed for him was to wear green glasses. It was absurd to attempt to paint everything green.

THE VISION OF LOVE: Similarly if we change our vision, we will experience peace. When people view the world with the vision of love, they will have peace. All diseases will be cured. Most diseases have their origin in the mind. Everything has a psychological basis. When a person feels that something is wrong with him, he develops an illness.   Healthy mind is needed for a healthy body. But it is not enough to be physically healthy. Man needs God's grace also (Daivaanugraham). To acquire God’s grace you have to cultivate the love of God. Love has become today a kind of show. Genuine love should emanate from the heart. Start the day with love, spend the day with love, and end the day with love, that is the way to God. If you develop love disease will not come near you.

AVOID EXCESSES: I am 70 years now. I can see even an ant that is far away. It is not due to divine power. It is physical power.  What is the reason? Diet control. My weight has remained the same for nearly sixty years - 108 lbs only. Proper balance must be maintained throughout life.  There must balance in respect of knowledge and several other things.  Students pollute their knowledge by seeing bad things, listening bad things, and by bad thoughts. Their minds are perverted by addiction to films. They should learn to lead pure lives. Only then they will experience bliss and health. Embodiments of the Divine! Realise the values of health. Self-restraint is essential to maintain health. Regulate your habits. Develop good manners, which are the mark of a true man. Similarly, the good devotee is one who does his duty. Duty is God. Everyone has to develop the manners required in daily life. The manners should be such that they confer self-satisfaction. You should conduct yourself properly not for the sake of others but for your own sake.  When there is self-satisfaction there will be self-realization. For all these you must have self-confidence. Most people today have no confidence in themselves and are perpetually racked doubts. In Jesus’ time there was one doubting Thomas. But today all are doubting Thomases. Everyone doubts every other.

HEALTH AND BLISS: For every man two things are essential: Good health (Arogya) and happiness (Ananda). Health for the body and bliss for the spirit. With these two wings you can soar to any height. You need both the things, for which you must secure God' s grace. To get Gods grace, you have to engage yourself in sacred action. Bear in mind the three P’s: PURITY, PATIENCE, and PERSEVERANCE. With these three you are bound to acquire good health and bliss.

BHAGAVAN’S EXAMPLE: You may believe it or not, but the truth is that these three are responsible for my Arogya (health) and Ananda (bliss). I am always happy. I should like to run but there is no place where I can do so. I can lift anybody at this age. This strength is present potentially in everyone. But it is being wasted. If the energy in everyone is properly conserved he can do anything.

THE WHITEFIELD HOSPITAL: The Hospital here began in a small way with a single room. Over the years it was expanded.  Dr. Rajeshwari, mother of Srinivas, (former Warden of Brindavan Hostel) work hard to develop the hospital.  She devoted all her earnings to the expansion of the hospital. She worked ceaselessly day and night. Ultimately she passed away in the hospital itself.  The hospital was her home. Thereafter, Dr. Savithri has been carrying on the work. Savithri has been working tirelessly.  She attends to everything herself. By her work for patients she is becoming a patient herself. She must take care of her health. Only the doctor is healthy, the patients can be well taken care of.  As is the doctor so is the patient.  Hence Savithri must take care of her own health. This is all the more necessary because the hospital is growing day by day. Srinivas is rendering every help for the hospital. There are others who are also serving the hospital in various ways.

FREE MEDICAL AID: The doctors have to meet the growing demands on their services. The number of patients coming to the hospital is growing all the time. All services are totally free. Not a paisa is collected from the patients. This applies to Super Specialty Hospital in Prashanthi gram. Such free medical treatment is not given anywhere in the world. Elsewhere hospitals have become big business. In fact, in every sphere commercialisation is rampant. Education a business. Music is a business, health is a business. The whole world has become a market place. Welfare services should be free for all.  There are numerous people who cannot afford the cost of medical treatment.  Doctor should render free treatment to such persons. My words should not be misunderstood. Even in the earning of incomes, there should be a limit. Many doctors lack determination. They join a hospital on a good salary. But after a month or so, when another hospital offers a higher salary they go over to the new hospital. How long are you likely to stay in the other hospital? When you go like this, you forfeit the confidence of hospital management. Even workers behave in this way. They shift from place to place.  The right thing is to stick to a job for three to four years. Then your work will secure automatic recognition.

DOCTORS AND PATIENTS: Doctors are obsessed with salaries.  They should be more concerned about patients. When they concentrate on their patients, they will develop into excellent doctors. Inspire confidence in the patients. Then any medicine you give will work wonders. The patients will hail such a doctor as a  "good doctor". A "good doctor" in due course becomes a "God doctor". "Vaidyo Narayano Harih", it is said. The doctor is Divinity himself.  Doctors should render service in this spirit. Service is God. Very good work is being done in our hospital as well as elsewhere. Bharat would not be what it is without good people. Without meritorious people, can the world experience light?  There are good and bad people in the world. All should become good and develop into Godly men. The same Atma is present in everyone. Doctors should look after the patients with the same care they would show to their kith and kin. Then all   would experience equal happiness.

1. Where is God?

God is in our very body. God is not in some far-off place. Like precious jewels kept in a valueless iron safe, the Divine Atma resides in our body. Realize this the path of Truth.

2. Where is sin?

Sin is not in some distant country. It is there in the very actions that we perform.

3. Why should the body be carefully looked after?

The body should be carefully looked after because it enshrines the Divine Atma. This is man's primary duty. The body is verily the foundation of human life. Without a strong and healthy body, man will fall as easy victim to numerous ailments.

4. What are the advantages of having a strong and healthy body?

Pure, noble and sublime ideas can emanate only from a strong and healthy body. The body is a world in itself. It is a collective assemblage of many organs and limbs. Each organ has its‚ own‚ beauty, which has to be fostered weak and unhealthy body cannot perform any resolute action. As the body provides residence for the Divine Atma, we must take special care to maintain it properly. The Divine spirit illumines the body although it is composed of flesh, blood, and other impure things. The Atma is ever pure, precious and immutable and is not subject to growth and decay. Man’s primary duty is not to neglect the body but to take the utmost care for its proper maintenance. The body has to be used for the discharge of one's duties and obligations in life.

5. Can we progress on the spiritual path by subjecting the body to various ordeals?

We cannot progress on the spiritual path by subjecting the body to various ordeals. We should not subject the body to various ordeals in the name of worship, fasting and penance. If we do this we are missing the goal of recognising the eternal Atmic principle. By subjecting the body to various ordeals we cannot realise the Atma. By giving up food and drink we cannot attain liberation. We can attain Self-realisation only by knowing our real nature.

6. What is the first step in the quest for Self-knowledge?

The first step in the quest for Self-knowledge is to understand the nature of‚ man. He alone can be called a man who has harmonised his thoughts, words and deeds. The discovery of the Divinity in man calls for the appropriate enquiry leading to the perception of the Real.  Through prolonged contemplation on  the Self, one perceives his real Self. The  man then becomes a seer (Drashta).  The aim of Bhakti is to become a Seer  (Drashta) and to perceive the world with this spiritual background. Man remains a human being in form only when   he has not achieved the realisation of his true  Self.

7. The body is a water bubble. Explain how we should treat this bubble.

The body is a water bubble, which emerges from water, stays on the water for a while and then merges back in the water. So also the bubble called Nara (man) has emerged from the water called Narayana  (God), and merges back in Him. We must recognize the Divine origin of the human being, and use the human body in an appropriate manner.

We cannot use the body, as we like. We have to regulate the body according to prescribed standards and limits. We cannot achieve any success or progress unless we observe such discipline. We should develop purity in our thoughts, feelings, looks and actions. If we use our senses and limbs in impure ways, our nature will degenerate from the human to the demonic.

In all our living habits, the food we eat, the water we drink, and the words we speak and hear, moderation should be observed as the keynote. Exceeding the limits will entail danger to the body.

8. Discuss the five categories into which man's knowledge can be divided.

Man's knowledge can be divided into five categories:

(1) Book-Knowledge: Acquisition of knowledge from books is superficial.  We will be wasting our lives if we confine our lives to acquiring only book-knowledge.

(2) General Knowledge: General knowledge cannot be gained from books. It can only be gained from various experiences in day to day living, especially by service to society.

(3) Common Sense: like general knowledge, common sense can only be gained by service to society and from various experiences in our day-to-day living. Today, both General   Knowledge and Common Sense have become conspicuous by their absence.

(4) Discriminative Knowledge: Young people should have the right discrimination.  They should not use their discrimination for their selfish ends. Discriminative knowledge should be used for the good of the society at large and not to achieve selfish ends. The collective good of the society should always be kept in view.  Young people should exercise what may be called  "fundamental discrimination” which is applicable to all people irrespective of the country to which they belong.

According to spiritual arithmetic 3 - 1 = 1.

God, Maya and Universe represent the three entities. God is the object, Maya is the mirror and the Universe is God's reflection in the mirror.

If we take away the mirror, then there will be no Maya and no Universe. Only God remains. Hence 3-1= 1. To understand this we need the fifth kind of knowledge - practical knowledge.

(5) Practical knowledge: Every individual thinks that it is enough to take care of himself only. He should realise that he is a part of society, and he should therefore be equally concerned with the welfare of society as a whole. This is practical knowledge, and it is highly essential for man.

Just as there is no difference between the Sun and its rays, or between the Sea and its waves, there is no difference whatsoever between God and Love, because God is the source of Love. The body and the Atma are interdependent and intimately associated with each other.

9. Why is bodily health essential for man?

Bodily health is essential for man till the Atma is realized.  Although the body is transient, it should be properly cared for because the body enshrines the Divine Atma. The relationships between the body and the Atma are interdependent. They are intimately associated with each other. Hence there is need to maintain the health of the body at all times.

Man is today subject to more maladies caused by mental worries than by consuming bad food.  Mental worry is only a mentally created fear. There should be a limit to speculation, anxiety and worries. Students should avoid excessive indulgence in any activities, as they will have an adverse effect on their bodies.

10. Explain Swami's programme of "Ceiling on Desires".

Swami's programme of "Ceiling on Desires" has four   important components.

(1) Don't waste food. Why? Because food is God.   Food is indispensable to human life for the body cannot survive without   food.

(2) Don't waste money. The misuse of money is an evil. Misuse of   money will result in the loss of peace of mind and to the ruining of life   itself. The indiscriminate spending of money for selfish purposes should be avoided in the interest of society at large. The spirit of co-operation has to be promoted.

(3) Don't waste energy. Everything in life depends on   maintaining a proper balance. Today this balance has been lost because of   excessive knowledge and its misuse. Knowledge should be transformed into skill.   Young people are killing knowledge. Young people are wasting knowledge and   energy in seeing, hearing, talking, thinking and acting in a wrong and excessive measure.

For example, due to continuous talking day and night, much energy is being wasted. Every action involves the use of energy. If the energy in the body is properly utilized, the balance will be maintained in the body and it will be in good shape.

(4) Don’t waste time. Mans life is wasted in brooding over the past and worrying over the future. What is the root cause of mans sorrow and sickness? Not being content with what he has and hankering after what he does not have, man forfeits his peace of mind. Of what use is it to think of the past, which is irrevocable, and the future, which is uncertain? It is a total waste of time.

What is most important is the present. It is omnipresent. The result of the past and the result of the future are both present in the present. We are reaping in the present what we have sown in the past. What we are sowing in the present we will reap in the future.

Thus both the past and the future are contained in the present only. So we must make the best use of the present. We must therefore resolve to give up worry, not to waste our time, and lead ideal lives leading to immortality and the fulfillment of the purpose of human life.

11. Why should we take good care of the body?

We should take good care of the body because it is the moving temple of God. Everything in this world is impermanent, bit that does not mean that we should neglect to perform our duties.

12. Explain the importance of developing Self-confidence.

Self-confidence may be compared to the foundation of the edifice of life. We should have Self-confidence that is confidence in ourselves, instead of confidence in the world. Self-satisfaction may be compared to the walls, Self-sacrifice to the roof and Self-realisation to the happiness we derive from living in the mansion of the human body. With Self-confidence we will be able to face and surmount the difficulties of life.  With Self-confidence we can accomplish anything and secure joy.

13.  Explain the meaning of the single-lettered word I.

The single lettered I refers to the Atom which is present in all of us. This single lettered I exists equally in all persons, irrespective of whether one is a‚ Bogie (a pleasure seeker), a Rogi (a diseased person), a Yogi (a realised   person), a Viragi (a monk) or a Byragi (a mendicant). Although our names and forms are different, the I in all of us is one and the same.  That is why the Vedas declare Truth (Existence) is one. The sages call it by different names.  Ekam sat vipra bahudha vadanti.

14. Swami says Try to experience the Unity underlying the diversity in the Universe.  Explain.

The Atma exists equally in all persons, and in all names and forms. We should therefore ignore the diversity that we see in all persons, and see the underlying unity of the Atma that is present in each one of us. It is because we see the diversity and ignore the Unity that there is so much restlessness and lack of peace in the world. Nations are many, but the earth is one. Beings are many, but the breath is one. The stars are many but the sky is one. If we remember the Unity in the diversity there will be no room for differences, quarrels or wars in the world. Students should never give room for any differences and discrimination in their thoughts, words, or deeds.

15. Why is it important that we should take care of the body?

We should take care of the body for the sake of the precious Atma that resides in it. We can judge for ourselves whether we are strong and healthy or weak and unhealthy by the nature of the ideas that arise within us. That is why it is said, As you think, so you become. Yat bahvan tat bhavati.  Unhealthy ideas arise only in an unhealthy body. Having got this invaluable human birth, we should seek the Atma instead of‚ running after food (Annam). We should not go in search of food. If we have the Self-confidence, the required food will come walking to us, as it were. We should eat to live, not live to eat.

16. What are the four Fs we should practice?

The four Fs we should practice are:

(1) Follow the Master (your conscience)

(2) Face the devil (of evil tendencies)

(3) Fight till the end.

(4) Finish the game (of life with success).

17. What is the inner meaning of the first three letters of the alphabet?

The first three letters of the alphabet - A, B, C mean: - Always Be Careful. This has the same meaning as the declaration in the Upanishads: - Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached.

18. What should be our attitude towards life in our day-to-day affairs?

We should go on discharging our duties and obligations in the proper manner with enthusiasm and joy. That itself will confer bliss on us. We should not worry about the future or brood over the past. All are passing clouds only. At some time or other, we have to know the Truth about ourselves. We should start knowing it from now itself. We should be on the alert all the time, because we do not know when the Lords Grace, His Love and Benediction will be showered on us, at what time in what place and in what circumstances. We cannot understand what the Divine plans are. Knowing that in this world there is nothing permanent, we should not worry at all. We should give no scope at all for any kind of worry.  Only then can we be entitled to become Divine.

19. Explain the importance of food habit in our spiritual life.

Of the 8,400,000 species of living beings on earth, 8,399,999 species like insects, bird and animals live on what is provided by God in Nature. Hence they do not generally suffer from any disease. Man is the sole exception. Having become a slave to his palate, man relishes‚ only cooked and spicy food without realising how such food reduces his longevity. It is significant to note that those who live on vegetarian food are less prone to diseases, whereas non-vegetarians are more subject to diseases. The reason is that animal food is incompatible with the needs of the human body. There are better quality proteins in vegetables, pulses, milk and curd than in animal food. Non-vegetarian food not only affects man’s body but also has a‚ deleterious effect on his mind.

20. What are the effects of consuming animal food?

By consuming animal food, animal tendencies are aroused. As is your food so are your thoughts. Food, head, God - these three are interrelated. Men today are behaving in a manner worse than even the wild animals in the‚ forest. They have become cruel, pitiless and  hard-hearted.  There is no sympathy or understanding even between man and man.  The main reason for‚ this condition is the kind of food that man consumes. Students should be careful of the kind of food they eat. The food should be conducive to their health and happiness.

21. How much food should we take each day?

Our ancestors used to take food only twice a day.  Our ancient sages used to eat only once a day. It has been declared that a man who eats once a day is a Yogi; a man who eats twice a day is a Bhogi (enjoyer), while a man who eats three times a day is a Rogi (sick man). Man needs food, which supplies him with energy equivalent to about one calorie per minute. For a   healthy life, man needs only about 1,500 calories of‚ food per day. Young people should be satisfied with 2,000 calories per day. Because our food intake has increased beyond these limits, people suffer from all kinds of diseases. Do not worry about sleep. If you go to bed without any worry, sound sleep will come to you automatically.

22. What are the requirements for leading an ideal life?

The requirements for leading an ideal life are:

  1. Observe moderation in your intake of food
  2. Keep your body in good shape
  3. Perform your duties properly
  4. Do not develop undue attachment to the body.
  5. Eliminate the feelings of I and mine in all your thoughts, words and deeds. The two feelings of I and mine are solely responsible for all the problems and evils prevailing in society.
  6. Minimize, if not eliminate altogether, the feelings of doer-ship (I am the doer) and enjoyer-ship (I am the enjoyer).

23. Why do we suffer from ill health?

We suffer from ill health due to psychological reasons. We should always‚ have a positive outlook and self-confidence that our health is all right.

In olden days people were considered to be young at the age of 80, 90 or even 100. At he time of the Kurukshetra war, Krishna and Arjuna were 86 and 84 years old respectively. But they were in youthful condition. Bhishma was 116 years old and was the Commander-in-Chief of the Kaurava army. He fought fiercely for nine days. They were young because of their mental condition, nourishing food, and above all in their confidence in the Atma - the real Self. We should therefore have Self-confidence and spiritual strength.

24. How can we gain steadiness and stability in life?

We can gain steadiness and stability in life if we develop the courage to face the vicissitudes of life, joys or sorrows, gain or losses with equanimity. We‚ may worship a picture as God, not God as a picture. The mind should not waver from moment to moment.

25. What are the characteristics of a devotee?

A devotee is a person with genuine   devotion. He should be ready to accept gladly anything that comes to him as   Gods gift. It is only when a man undergoes trials and tribulations, hardships   and sorrows that his real strength and worth will shine forth. There are many   who call themselves devotees but they do not conduct themselves properly. Real   devotion is that which is buttressed by firm faith and is steadfast and unchanging under all circumstances. Only the will the devotee deserve to get the fruits of real Bhakti (devotion).

26. What are the five vital   constituents of your personality?

The five vital constituents of our personality are:

  1. The body
  2. The senses
  3. The mind
  4. The intellect
  5. The Atma

Once we have understood the mysteries and subtleties of each one of them, we need no other spiritual discipline.

Truth is everything. Without realising this, there is no use troubling us with all sorts of Sadhanas  (spiritual practices). Our lives should be guided by Atmic awareness, not by body-consciousness. To control the mind we should be able to understand the nature of the mind. We should also have a thorough understanding of the senses.  Once we understand thoroughly the nature and role of the body, the senses, the mind, the intellect and the Atma, we can blossom forth as persons endowed with purity and equanimity.

FILL THE WORLD WITH LOVE

Bhagawan’s inaugural address to the sixth World Conference of Sai Organisation on 18-11-‘95

There is no worse disease Than Greed;

No enemy worse than Anger; nor is there any Misery worse than Poverty;

There is no Greater Happiness than Wisdom.

Among the numerous diseases prevalent in the world, the disease of greed  (lobha) has grown beyond bounds. There is no disease‚ worse than this. This greed undermines humanness and turns man into a monster.

The second disease is anger (krodha). There is no enemy worse than anger. It is possible to over come external foes, but it is very difficult to subdue this internal enemy. Anger can destroy all human qualities and make a man forget his real nature. It is man’s worst enemy.

There is no misery equal to poverty. Poverty does not merely mean lack of wealth. You have poverty of the mind, poverty in wisdom. This poverty also causes misery to man.

Man is ravaged by these three: Greed (or miserliness), anger and lack of wisdom. There is no grater source of happiness than wisdom (Jnaana or the Higher Knowledge). Jnaana is not confined to worldly knowledge. There are other kinds of knowledge-bookish, superficial etc.-of, which the most valuable is practical knowledge.

PURPOSE OF LIFE

Everyone should strive to acquire that knowledge by which he can get rid of greed, anger and material and spiritual poverty. It is to achieve this purpose that you are participating in this conference.

At the outset you have to consider what is the purpose of life.  Is it for involvement in endless work or for eating and sleeping or indulging in gossip that the Divine has conferred this human birth?  (Swami sang Telugu poem).  The gift of intelligence is being used for many trivial purposes but not to understand the goal of life.

Society today is riddle with discord and disorder. The progress of civilization has undermined morality and decency in all walks of life. Obsessed with worldly values, men have lost all concern for moral values. Selfishness reigns supreme everywhere.  Even in the spiritual field, people seen to be more interested in themselves than in the welfare of society and the promotion of public good.

The delegates assembled in this conference appear to be concerned about the functioning of their centers.  Why were these centres started?  The primary objective of the Sai Organisation is to raise the human consciousness Divine by eliminating all animal tendencies. People do not seem to be aware of their true nature. Only those who understand their selves can help to evaluate others. The Upanishads have given the clarion call the mankind to wake from their ignorance and go forward towards their supreme divine destiny of self- realisation.

THE THREE PATHS OF SAI

You have to engage yourselves in seva (service.  Service does not mean mere rendering help to others one of kind or another.  True service means participation in social activities after riding yourself of egoism and possessiveness and manifesting your qualities of compassion and kindness. The aim is the refinement of your good nature rather than giving succor to others.  There is a Sanskrit saying which declares that greater than penance or pilgrimage, meditation or worship, is to service to good people.

In rendering service, there should be unity of heart, head and hands (the three Hs).  Only then service becomes sanctified.  The significance of the three letters in Sai should be understood.   S stands for Service. A stands for Adoration.  I stand for Illumination (cheers). These three represent karma, bhakti and jnaana respectively. Sai teaches these three.  All the three concepts are equally important. Sai is a combination of the three spiritual paths of Action, Devotion and Wisdom. Just as the Pranava sound is made up of the three letters, A, U, M (OM), SAI stands for the triple forms of   spiritual sadhana. In the Sai Organisation, this threefold exercise has to be   properly understood.

FILL THE WORLD WITH LOVE

Sai sevaks have to develop the love in them, share it with others and fill the whole world with love. True love should be distinguished from attachments of various kinds. That love is a synonym for God. Love is God.

Live in love. The love of God comes from the depths of the heart. Sai sevaks should understand this love and render service in the right spirit to all mankind.

People ask how they can experience God. The answer was given by Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, when he told a questioner that if he loved God with the same intensity with which he loved his wife and children he would be able to experience God.

Perform all actions as an offering to God. Do not make any distinction between your official work and your work in the Sai Organisation. Spirituality cannot be divided into compartments. The Sathya Sai Organisation was set up solely to enable members to manifest their love in all their activities. You should manifest the divinity within you. That is Self-realisation, realisation of your oneness with the Divine.

QUALITY AND QUANTITY

The setting up of Sai Centers is not an exercise in numbers. The emphasis should be on quality and not quantity. The International President and the National President of our Organisation have mentioned how the centers  (Samasthalu) have grown. But has fellow feeling  (Samathvam) grown to the same extent? Fellow feeling should grow. On the contrary, divisiveness is growing. I want quality, not quantity (cheers).

Promote harmony among members. You cannot avoid making such distinctions as President, Coordinator, Member and the like. But these distinctions are functional and have no place at the spiritual level. God is present equally in all, from the president to the ordinary member. You should recognize this oneness. Positions, names and forms may vary, but the Supreme Truth is one. This spirit of oneness (Samathvam) should be fostered.  Then there will be no jealousy or discord. Where there is oneness there will be no trouble.

SAMATHVAM

Society today is racked by jealousy and hatred.  Jealousy is a‚ disease, which gives rise to hatred. Develop forbearance and goodwill. That is the cure for jealousy. I have often declared: My life is My message Often many have extolled me or derided me. I do not get elated by praise or depressed by criticism. I treat everything alike (Samathvam).  Samathvam yogam uchyathe.  That equal mindedness is yoga (cheers). What do I lose when someone criticize me? That is his opinion. It does not affect me.  Those who criticize Baba are suffering from a disease, like those who reject a sweet because they suffer from diabetes. The fault lies not in the sweet but in the person who unable to relish it. They know that Baba is engaged in beneficial activities and they want him.  But because some of their selfish interests are not served, they turn against Swami. That is a malady. When you see the facts in this light, you will realise the truth.

Today you have to cultivate a serene equanimity that rises above these trifles. The development of equanimity is more important than the growth of centres. You should recognize the Divinity in one and all.  The one‚ Supreme Spirit dwells in all beings. Bulbs are many but the current that illumine them is one. Develop this spirit of oneness. Unity will lead Divinity. Many who are working in the Organisation do not recognize the need for unity. Lack of unity breeds enmity and groupism.

The Organisation exists not for my sake but yours. When Swami administers what may appear as bitter medicine, it is for your own good. God is the physician for the ills of human existence. You may not relish the taste of His medicine. But whatever Swami does, says or gives, is all for your good.

Above all, unity is the foremost need of the hour. Nations are many, but the earth is one (cheers). All are denizens of the earth. All are children of Mother Earth. Recognize this truth.

GOD AND NATURE

In the realm of the Spirit, it is foolish to ask for proofs of direct external perception. The spiritual is subtle. It has to be experienced within.  The Divine is present within us incognito like the Pandavas during the last year of their exile. Does the external form of a person reveal anything about his internal qualities? He himself may not be aware of all of them. He may be full of love or hatred. Can anyone perceive it? Without knowing his qualities, is it proper to judge him by his physical features?

You see this magnificent hall, but you do not see its foundations. Likewise, God is the basis, Nature is the superstructure. The body is like a rose in which the spirit is present as invisible fragrance.

ALWAYS BLISSFUL

This conference should consider how the Sai Organisations could improve their service activities. I have nothing to gain from the Organisation. I am always blissful. There is no need to wish me Happy Birthday. I am always happy.  Embodiments of Love! Develop love, so that you may deserve this appellation.

The Tamilnadu President, T.G.Krishnamurthy said, that when Swami reincarnates as Prema Sai‚ he should be given the privilege of‚ serving Swami. Ayyaa! Take good care of what you already have. Why hanker after something in the womb of the future? The present is very important. Past is past. Don’t worry about the future. Take care of the present, which will determine the future. Do your duty now. Duty is God. Work is worship. This is the way to run the Organisation on ideal lines.

What is being inaugurated today is the search for the supreme truth about the Divinity within.

BIRTHDAYS

People have referred to the Seventieth Birthday.  The body is constituted of the five elements, the five sheaths, the five life-breaths and the five senses.  Up to ones fiftieth year, one may be described as experiencing youth (Yavvanam).  Youth hood should be dedicated to purposeful activities. Youth is not related to age. Bhishma, who was 112 years old, was the commander-in-chief of the Kaurava forces. It is will power that determines ones age.

When one reaches sixty, it is a Bharatiya custom to perform Shanthi Pooja for the purpose of subduing the six internal enemies  (lust, pride etc.). On reaching seventy, a person attains the state of the Seven Sages, the Seven Oceans, the seven musical notes, the Seven Colors. The seven colors come from the suns rays. The suns rays are eternal. The Seventieth year symbolizes the attainment of the saintliness of the Seven Sages  (Sapta Rishis who constitute the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear).  On attaining the eightieth year, you must become one of the eight planets  (Ashtagraha). On reaching the ninetieth year, you have to acquire the strength of one of the nine planets (Navagrahas).  On reaching the hundredth year one should merge in the ten indriyas (organs of sense and action) and get rid of the body consciousness.

The acquisition of the love of God should be the primary aim of members of the Sai Organisations. The spiritual path is the easiest to follow. The giving up of worldly desires is easier than clinging to them. Hold fast to God.

Who is Sai?

9 June 1974

(Sathya Sai Speaks IX, 88-92)

[Swami talks about God, the religion of Love, and his Avatar-hood. He explains why he materializes rings, etc., and gives them to people, and he explains what "Sai Baba" means. This is the CROWN GEM among all gems of Swami’s talk and messages]

God is inscrutable. He cannot be realized in the outer objective world; He is in the very heart of every being. Gemstones have to be sought deep underground; they do not float in mid air. Seek God in the depths of your self, not in tantalizing, kaleidoscopic nature. The body is granted to you for this high purpose; but you are now misusing it, like the person who cooked his daily food in the gem-studded gold vase that came into his hands as an heirloom.

Man extols God as omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent, but he ignores his Presence in himself! Of course, many venture to describe the attributes of God and proclaim Him to be such and such; but these are but their own guesses and the reflections of their own predilections and preferences.

Who can affirm that God is this or thus? Who can affirm that God is not of this form or with this attribute? Each one can acquire from the vast expanse of the ocean only as much as can be contained in the vessel he carries to its shore. From that quantity, they can grasp but little of that immensity.

Each religion defines God within the limits it demarcates and then claims to have grasped Him. Like the seven blind men who spoke of the elephant as a pillar, a fan, a rope or a wall, because they contacted but a part and could not comprehend the entire animal, so too, religions speak of a part and assert that its vision is full and total.

Each religion forgets that God is all forms and all names, all attributes and all assertions. The religion of humanity is the sum and substance of all these partial faiths; for there is only one religion and that is the religion of Love. The various limbs of the elephant that seemed separate and distinct to the eye-less seekers of its truth were all fostered and activated by one single stream of blood; the various religions and faiths that feel separate and distinct are all fostered by a single stream of love.

The optical sense cannot visualize the truth. It gives only false and fogged information. For example, there are many who observe my actions and start declaring that my nature is such and such. They are unable to gauge the sanctity, the majesty, and the eternal reality that is Me. The power of Sai is limitless; It manifests forever. All forms of 'power' are resident in this Sai palm.

But those who profess to have understood me, the scholars, the Yogis, the pundits, the Jnanis, all of them are aware only of the least important, the casual external manifestation of an infinitesimal part of that power, namely, the "miracles"! They have not desired to contact the source of all power and all wisdom that is available here at Brindavan. They are satisfied when they secure a chance to exhibit their book learning and parade their scholarship in Vedic lore, not realizing that the person from whom the Vedas emanated is in the midst, for their sake. They even ask, in their pride, for a few more chances!

This has been the case in all ages. People may be very near (physically) to the Avatar, but they live out their lives unaware of their fortune; they exaggerate the role of miracles, which are as trivial, when compared to my glory and majesty, as a mosquito is in size and strength to the elephant upon which it squats. Therefore, when you speak about these 'miracles,' I laugh within myself out of pity that you allow yourself so easily to lose the precious awareness of my reality.

My power is immeasurable; My truth is inexplicable, unfathomable. I am announcing this about me, for the need has arisen. But what I am doing now is only the gift of a 'visiting card!' Let me tell you that emphatic declarations of the truth by Avatars were made so clearly and so unmistakably only by Krishna. In spite of the declaration, you will notice in the career of the same Krishna that he underwent defeat in his efforts and endeavors, on a few occasions; you must also note that those defeats too were part of the drama that he had planned and that he himself directed. For example, when many kings pleaded with him to avert the war with the Kauravas, he confessed that his mission to the Kaurava Court for ensuring peace had 'failed'! But, he had not willed that it should succeed! He had decided that war would be waged! His mission was intended to publish the greed and iniquity of the Kauravas and to condemn them before the whole world.

Now, I must tell you that, during this Sai Avatar, there is no place for even such 'drama' with scenes of failures and defeats!  What I will, must take place; what I plan must succeed. I am Truth; and Truth has no need to hesitate, or fear, or bend.

'Willing' is superfluous for me. For my grace is ever available to devotees who have steady love and faith. Since I move freely among them, talking and singing, even intellectuals are unable to grasp my truth, my power, my glory, or my real task as Avatar. I can solve any problem however knotty. I am beyond the reach of the most intensive enquiry and the most meticulous measurement. Only those who have recognized my love and experienced that love can assert that they have glimpsed my reality. For the path of Love is the royal road that leads mankind to me.

Do not attempt to know me through the external eyes. When you go to a temple and stand before the image of God, you pray with closed eyes, don't you? Why? Because you feel that the inner eye of wisdom alone can reveal Him to you. Therefore, do not crave from me trivial material objects; but crave for me, and you will be rewarded. Not that you should not receive whatever objects I give as sign of grace out of the fullness of Love.

I shall tell you why I give these rings, talismans, rosaries etc. It is to signalize the bond between me and those to whom they are given. When calamity befalls them, the article comes to me in a flash and returns in a flash taking from me the remedial grace of protection. That Grace is available to all who call on me in any name or form, not merely to those who wear these gifts. Love is the bond that wins grace.

Consider the meaning of the name Sai Baba. Sa means 'Divine'; ai or ayi means 'mother', and Baba means 'father'. The name indicates the divine mother and father, just as Sambasiva, which also means the divine mother and father. Your physical parents exhibit Love with a dose of selfishness; but, this Sai "mother and father" showers affection or reprimands only to lead you toward victory in the struggle for self-realization.

For this Sai has come in order to achieve the supreme task of uniting the entire mankind, as one family through the bond of brotherhood, of affirming and illumining the Atmic reality of each being in order to reveal the Divine that is the basis on which the entire cosmos rests, and of instructing all to recognize the common divine heritage that binds man to man, so that man can rid himself of the animal, and rise into the Divine, which is his goal.

I am the embodiment of divine love; love is my instrument. There is no creature without love; the lowest loves itself, at least. And its self is God. So there are no atheists, though some might dislike Him or refuse Him, as malarial patients dislike sweets or diabetic patients refuse to have anything to do with sweets! Those who preen themselves, as atheists will one day, when their illness is gone, relish God and revere Him.

I had to tell you so much about my truth, for I desire that you should contemplate on this and derive joy therefrom, so that you may be inspired to observe the disciplines laid down by me and progress toward the goal of self-realization, the realization of the Sai that shines in your hearts.

FIFTY ‘GEMS’ FROM THE DISCOURSES OF LORD  SAI

[Source: Thought for the Day, a collection of Swami's Quotations published from Prashanthi Nilayam]

Goodness, compassion and tolerance: through these three paths, one can see the divinity in oneself and in others. Softness of heart is condemned by people today as weakness, cowardice and want of intelligence. The heart has to be hardened, they say, against pity and charity. But that way lies war, destruction and downfall. Love confers lasting happiness and peace. Sharing can reduce grief and multiply joy. Man is born to share, to serve, to give and not to grab. When you have faith in God as a precious truth in the altar of your heart, you will welcome, with equal alacrity, the blows and blossoms of fortune.

The Ramayana is a guidebook, a sacred text, an inspiring scripture, for every man in all lands, whatever his creed or condition might be. It imparts poise, balance, equanimity, inner strength and peace. Peace is the best treasure without which power; authority, fame and fortune are all dry and burdensome. Thyagaraja has sung that there can be no happiness without inner peace.

Why is it that the world reveres Rama and revolts at Ravana? Rama is not the uncle's son or Ravana the stepmother's child! It is the kinship of the spirit, innate goodness, responding lovingly, adoringly to the goodness in Rama; and reacting revoltingly to the wickedness of Ravana. It is not enough, nor is it essential that you should repeat the name of Rama loudly; respect it in the fullness of love and admiration. If you have no spring of love in you, dig into your heart with external instruments like Puja, Stotra, etc. and it will start to flow.

Vibhishana, Ravana's own brother, chastised him for his willfulness and lust and urged him to save himself, his kingdom and his kith and kin by restoring Sita unharmed to her Lord. When Vibhishana went over to Rama, Rama knew that he had a pure heart and that he could not survive the poisonous atmosphere of Lanka. So He took him and saved him. The Lord likes to be called Aartha-traana-paarayana - more than any other name, for He is most happy when He rescues those in agony.

You talk glibly of Rama Rajya, but how can it be established, if you do not emulate Rama? He was Vignahavaan Dharmah, the very embodiment of Dharma. He never deviated from it. Dasaratha means one who is master of the ten senses, the five Karmendriyas and the five Jnanedriyas; that is to say the successful Sadhaka. Such a person can have the holy progeny of the four Purusharthas- Dharma (Rama), Artha (Lakshmana), Kama (Bharatha) and Moksha (Satrughna). Become a Dasaratha and save that holy progeny as a gift from God.

Hanuman succeeded in coordinating his thought, word and act. Therefore he had the unique distinction of being great in physical strength, mental stability and virtuous character. He shines as an invaluable gem among the personalities of the Ramayana. He was also a great scholar, who had mastered, of all things, the six schools of grammar. He knew the four Vedas and the six Sastras. The Gita says that a scholar is one who sees the same Divine force motivating everyone. Pandithaha Samadarshinaha. Hanuman was a good example of this outlook.

The vanaras while building the bridge across the ocean, carried huge boulders on their heads, repeating Rama-nama all the while; and that made the rocks weigh less. It is said that they even wrote the Name on the stones and that made them float. Each time they handled or lifted a stone, they sang Rama Nama in unison and so they were a happy lot, doing Puja not work, which is unpleasant. Take the Name and make your work light: That is my advice to you.

Insist on your seeking and remaining in good company, satsangha. Being in the midst of such spiritual heroes, you can fight against evil with a greater chance of success. Once when Garuda the sworn enemy of snakes went to Kailasa, he saw the snakes that Siva wore around His neck, His arms, His waist, His Feet. The snakes were safe now and they hissed with their puffed hoods at the celestial bird, which could do them no harm since they were in such Divine Company. Garuda said " Well! Glide down from the body and I shall kill every one of you.!" That is the value of the Sath one has reached. Sath Sangha is valuable, for it is like keeping a pot of water inside a tank of water. There will not be any loss through evaporation.

Pride is one of the worst sins in the spiritual field. If you feel that you are a bhakta of Hare, He will hare (destroy, in Telugu) you. Remember saranagathi should be like the attitude of Lakshmana. Rama said "Take Sita and leave her in the forest" Implicit obedience! There is no other way. That is Lakshmana. That is Saranagathi; the rest are deserving only of Saranagathi, the arrow of Rama.

Hanuman was ordered to discover the whereabouts of Sita and he implicitly without question obeyed and succeeded. He did not calculate the dangers of the journey and hesitate; and he did not feel proud that he was chosen for the high adventure. He listened; he understood; he obeyed; and he won. The name Ramadhuta, messenger and servant of Rama that he earned thereby, has made him immortal. You must earn that name, Sai Rama Dootha. Have fortitude and self control; use good and sweet words; and examine each act of yours on the touchstone of My preference.

The toughest fiber is anger. It is the stickiest dirt. When you get angry, you forget mother, father and teacher; you descend to the lowest depths. You lose all discrimination in the excitement; even Hanuman set fire to the whole of Lanka when he was incensed by the Rakshasas who set fire to the tip of his tail; and he lost sight of the fact that Sita was in the Ashoka Vana. It was only after he had exulted in achievement for a little while that he remembered it and then he started condemning himself for his anger.

Do not ask God for anything. Let him deal with you as He wills. Did Jatayu ask that Rama should come to him and perform his last rites? Did Shabari plead with Rama? Earn the qualifications - holiness, purity, faith, and universal love; then He will approach you on foot, to console, comfort and save. If you have purity of heart and mastery over the senses, His Grace is your right.

Ego plays all sorts of tricks, in order to get unholy pleasure. During the construction of the bridge to Lanka to take the army across, Hanuman heaved a boulder across the raging waves of the sea, as part of the bridge! it floated. Rama heaved another; it sank. Hanuman's ego was tickled, naturally. He laughed in derision; at that very moment his boulder sank! And, the boulder, that Rama had thrown, rose from the bottom of the sea and floated! Hanuman's ego was pricked to nothing. That was the purpose for which Rama had willed that His boulder should sink.

The Lord will be the guide of whoever installs Him as his Sarathi. He will not consider that position inferior. He is the Sanathana Sarathi, come to be the Sarathi of all. He is the Lord for all who seek a Master, a support. The Atma is the Master in every one; and Krishna is the universal Atma personified.

The genuine Bharatiya vision is to life into a pilgrimage towards the God resident in oneself; a steady march along the straight path to Bliss. There is no such steadiness now. Fancy and Fantasy rule the mind of man. You desire one thing in the morning; at noon you change over to something else. That desire will not persist until evening. If your desire is fulfilled, you praise God and parade your devotion. But, if it does not prevail, you throw God overboard and parade your disbelief.

Detachment is a plant of slow growth. If you pluck the tender plant to look for the pods, you will be disappointed. So, too, long constant practice alone is rewarded by the peace that God offers. Grace is acquired by surrender, as Krishna has declared in the Gita.

When the Gita directs you to give up all Dharma (Set codes of morality) it does not ask you to give up Karma, and, when you do it for God, through God and by God, the Dharma of it does not matter; it has to be acceptable; and it is bound to benefit you. The statement is not an invitation to licentiousness or complete inactivity. It is a call for dedication and surrender to the highest in man, namely God.

Perform all acts with as much love as you would offer God. In Truth, you eat for the satisfaction of the "I" in you and dress up to please the self-same "I". The husband loves the wife for the sake of the "I". And who is this "I," that is persistent in everyone? It is God himself. "Eswarah Sarva Bhoothanam" says the Gita: The Lord resides in the heart of every being. He is the Atman in every being. He is the Atman in everyone, the Paramatman.

Ponder over your sthithi (present condition), gathi (direction of movement), Shakthi (capabilities) and mathi (inclination). Then, enter upon the path of sadhana step by step, so that you faster every day, every hour, every minute. Arjuna became entitled to the Gita Upadesh from the Lord Himself, because he evinced the Vishada, the Vairagya the Saranagathi and the Ekagratha essential to assimilate the great message. When the yearning for liberation has become intense, beyond expression, man can set aside all social conventions, worldly norms and codes of conduct that do not subserve that high purpose.

The Gita says that, if you give up all Dharma, and take refuge in Him, then he will save you from sin and wipe your tears. Giving up Dharma does not mean that you can bid farewell to virtue and righteous action.; it means, you have to give up egoism that you are the doer. Be confirmed in the faith that He is the doer of every deed, that is the genuine 'giving up'

Krishna was known to all as Almighty - All - Knowing, All - Encompassing and All - fulfilling. Yet the enthusiasm to do seva prompted Him to approach Dharmaraja, the eldest of the Pandava brothers, on the eve of the magnificent Rajasuya Yaga he had planned to perform and offered to take up seva of any kind. He suggested that He be given the task of cleaning the dining hall after the guests had partaken of the feast! Krishna insisted on outer cleanliness and inner cleansing. Clean clothes and clean minds are an ideal combination.

During the battle of Kurukshetra, which climaxed as the Mahabharata story, Krishna served as the driver of the chariot of Arjuna throughout the day on the field and till dusk caused the adjournment of the fight. He led the horses to the river, gave them a refreshing bath and applied healing balms to the wounds suffered by them during the fierce fray. He mended the reins and the harness and rendered the chariot battle-worthy for another day. The Lord sets the example for the devotees to follow. He teaches that service done to any living being is offered to Him and is accepted by Him most joyfully. Service rendered to cattle, to beasts and to men is laudable sadhana.

The world today is in deep distress because the common man and his leaders are all distracted by lower desires and motives, which require only the lower skills and meaner impulses of man. This is what I call 'devaluation.' Though man is inherently divine, he lives only at the animal level. Very few live even in the native human level.

Bhishma, for example, has to be revered and accepted as an inspiration even more potent than Rama so far as homage to the father is concerned. In order to cater to the carnal cravings, which he would have ordinarily condemned, he denied himself gladly, spontaneously, without demur and for the entire period of his life, both wedded life and royal status. The Vedic injunction Pithr Devobhava was honored by him in the fullest manner.

This created Universe has two aspects; one is impermanence (Anithyam). The second is unhappiness (Asukham). In the Gita, Krishna has said, "Anithya, Asukha Lokam Imam Prapya Bhajaseva Maam". Nothing in the world can give happiness that is true and everlasting. Mistaking the world as 'All' and forgetting the Atman, which alone is eternal and the only refuge, is the greatest folly of man today; man is pinning all his hopes on the slippery work and is madly running after amassing and hoarding wealth. Of course material needs are to be taken care of but within limits and not at the cost of spiritual values. Money and mansions are not at the only wealth. Hoard the wealth of the spirit. Character is wealth; Good conduct is wealth; and spiritual wisdom is wealth.

Egoism is the most dangerous illusion that has to be exploded and destroyed. Bhima had it, but when he could not lift and lay aside the tail of a monkey, who was really Anjaneya himself, that the bubble was exploded. Arjuna had it, one day, after the battle; when Krishna brought the chariot back to camp, he wanted that, like all charioteers, Krishna should get down first; The Master must get down later, after the charioteer opens the door for him. Krishna refused and insisted that Arjuna should alight before He Himself should. At last Krishna won. Arjuna got down and then, as soon as Krishna left His seat and touched the ground, the chariot went up in flames. If only Krishna got down first, the fact was the various fire arrows that had the power of burning the chariot would hit the target, but, due to the presence of Krishna, their igniferous powers could not manifest themselves. After knowing this, Arjuna was humbled and his egoism had a powerful shock. He realized that every action of Krishna was full of significance.

The Gita advises Karmasanyasa, that is to say, karma without attachment to the fruit thereof. There are Karmas, which have to be done as duties, related to the status in Samsara, and, if these are done in the proper spirit, they will not bind at all. Do all karma as actors in a play, keeping your identity separate and not attaching yourself too much to your role. Remember that the whole thing is just a play and the Lord has assigned you a part; act well your part; there all duty ends. He has designed the play and He enjoys it.

It is when are in a desperate situation that you call upon the Lord, forgetting your pride and your egoism. The Pandavas were so full of misery in a worldly sense that they always had an attitude of prayer. If I had given you all the comforts and opportunities, you would not have come to Puttaparthy. Trouble is the bait with which the fish is handled out of the water. Kunti asked that Krishna should continue giving her and her sons all kinds of misery so that He may grant them His Grace continuously

The Mahabharata for example, is basically the story of the five vital airs of man (the Pancha Pranas) overcoming the hundred obstacles in the path of upward progress. The eldest of the five Pandava brothers is Dharmaraja (Morality, Righteousness); he is ably supported by Bhima (Physical strength devoted to Divine Service and charged with devotion), Arjuna (steady pure faith in God) and Nakula and Sahadeva, who represent steadfastness and equanimity. When these five are exiled, the Hastinapura (body) is inundated with Adharma (unrighteousness)

In the Manasa - Sarovar (the deep, placid mind lake) of every man, there lurks a poisonous cobra, with six hoods: lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride and hate, infesting the air and destroying all who are near it. The name of the Lord, when it dives into the depths, forces it to come up to the surface so that it may be destroyed. So, allow the Divine in you, the Krishna, Lord of the mind, let him trample on the hissing hoods and take out the vicious viper; let it vomit the venom and become sathvic and sweet.

Like all Avatars, Krishna announced His Advent to the world, bit-by-bit, step-by-step, testing how far the Reality will be accepted by the masses. The signs and miracles were intended then as now, to proclaim the Avatar.

The mystery and splendor of God can be only grasped by a pure mind and a clear vision. That is why the Lord granted a new eye to Arjuna in order that he might not be confounded by His Glory. A resolution adopted by the mind is like a stone thrown into a Sarovar or lake. It produces ripples that affect the entire face and unsettles equanimity. A good resolution or Sankalpa sets up a series of such thoughts, each contributing its quota to the process of purification and strengthening.

The One is comprehensive of all this. So, it has no wants, no desires and no activity to realize anything. Sri Krishna tells Arjuna: "Name Partha asthi Karthavyam, Thrishu Lokeshu Kinchava Partha" (There is nothing I have to do in any of the three worlds). He has willed the world as his sport, He has laid down that every deed must have its consequence. He is the dispenser of the consequences but is not involved in the deeds.

One can also be rid of Maya if one can discard the three Gunas from one's makeup. The Sathyaguna too has to be transcended, why? The Gita directs that even the eagerness to be liberated is a bond. One is fundamentally free. Bondage is only an illusion. So the desire to make close the bond is the result of ignorance. Krishna says," Arjuna, become free from the three Gunas." In truth, the word Guna means the rope, for all the three Gunas bind the Jiva with the rope of desire. Liberation means liberation from elusive attachment or Moha, "Mohakshaya - decline in the desire caused by attachment to sensory pleasure."

Consider for a moment how long worldly triumphs last. They are but the play of the scintillating name and form of the Divine, which is the core of every being. Earn the vision that sees the Divine inherent in all. We are not troubled when something is good; only when something is bad. This is because the goodness in us is natural. In our evil aberration, we are worried and alarmed when we slide into wrong or pain or sorrow. This is because nature plans us to be right, to be happy and ever in a state of joy. It is a pity that man has lost his understanding of this basic Truth.

Dhyana is not mere sitting erect and being silent. Nor is it the absence of any movement. It is the merging of all your thoughts and feelings to God. Without the mind becoming dissolved in God, Dhyana cannot succeed. The Gita declares genuine Dhyana as Ananyaschinthayanthomaam Ye Janah Paryapasthi (Those persons who adore me without any other thought or feeling). Krishna has assured such persons that He would Himself carry their burden and be by their side, guiding and guarding them. Persons adept in this Dhyana are very rare; most people go through the external exercises only. So they are unable to win Grace.

Life is a song, sing it. That is what Krishna taught through his life. Arjuna heard that song in the battlefield where tensions were at their highest and the fate of millions was to be decided by the sword. Krishna sang the Gita for Arjuna to listen. Gita means 'Song' and He sang because He was Ananda, wherever He might be - in Gokulam, on the banks of the Yamuna or at Kurukshetra between the warring armies.

Why does He attract all to His Presence? To plough the heart, prepare it for receiving the shower of Grace, to grow the seeds of Love, weed it of all evil thoughts, which smother the crops of joy and to enable it to gather the harvest of wisdom. That wisdom finds its fulfillment in Krishna Himself, for Krishna also means pure essence, the Supreme Principle, the Sat-Chit-Ananda

When Dharmaraja, the eldest of the five Pandavas, came to know after the death of Karna, which they effected successfully, that Karna was his brother, his agony knew no bounds; he was struck disconsolate and was torn by despair. If only he had known the truth, all that grief would have been avoided. So, too, until you know that all are altars where the Name of God is installed, all are moved and motivated by the Grace of the self same God, you are afflicted by hate and pride; Once you know it and experience it, you are full of Love and reverence to all.

The question on the battle-field was not who was the kin of whom, but who was right and who was wrong; fight for justice, fight for truth, fight for these as a kshatriya is duty bound, and leave the result to the dispenser of all. Krishna told Arjuna "I am surprised that you should weep so, for you are Gudakesha, the conqueror of sleep, of ignorance. You do not kill; don't be conceited at all that, nor do 'they' die; 'They' have many more things to do; and in the real, they are deathless" "The sentence of Death has already been pronounced on their bodies by Me and you have but to carry out My orders" Krishna said.

When the righteous Pandavas were harassed by wicked Kauravas, the beauteous Krishna appeared and saved them. The Lord can never deign violence and bloodshed. Love is His Instrument, Non-violence His Message. He achieves the correction of evil-minded through education and example. But, it may be asked, why did Kurukshetra happen? It was a surgical operation and therefore cannot be described as an act of violence. The Surgeon saves life through the beneficial use of His Knife.

Consider the name Krishna that the Avatar bore; what a significant Name? Krishna is derived from the root krish, which means

  1. To Attract
  2. To plough and cultivate
  3. The Divine Principle beyond time, space and Causation.

Krishna like all Avatars attracts not only seekers, saints and sages, but the simple, the innocent and the good. He draws also the curious, the critics the skeptics and those who suffer from atheism. He draws them towards Himself by the irresistible charm of His person, by his invincible Look, His Voice, His Flute, His counsel and His undaunted heroism! He is ever in a state of Bliss, spreading harmony, melody and beauty around Him; He sings everywhere in the peaceful pasture lands of Brindavan and in the blood soaked battlefield of Kurukshetra.

Bhishma was a bhakta and by winning the Lord's Grace he was clothed with more Majesty and splendor than any early emperor. What majesty have these scepter holders? They cannot claim to have inner peace, inner joy, they know not the joy of sharing love with all. Bhishma surrendered, to the Lord when He challenged Him with the sudarshana that is to say, when He offers su (good) darshana (vision) one must be wise enough to surrender, give up all that is what Bhishma did.

Arjuna exclaimed Krishna as the Omnipresent, Omnipotent and Omniscient God, when the foe was defeated day after day. But when his son Abhimanyu was killed in the conflict, he raved in the grief that Krishna had not guided him properly and guarded him efficiently. His mind wavered with every wind as fortune. To many the mind is the master of the intellect also. One must be vigilant and preserve the impartiality of instrument called Reason of Intellect. Clarify reason, then it will reveal God everywhere, even in you. Once you accept God as the core of the Universe and yourself have that faith strong and steady.

Fill every moment with energy, enthusiasm and effort. The epics teach you how to succeed in this. The Mahabharata describes how when every other of the hundred Kauravas died, the eldest Duryodhana was challenged by Bhima to meet him in a duel. When he at last fell to the ground, Bhima struck his head with his foot in order to add insult to injury. Duryodhana's pride was hurt. A Kshatriya such as he could not pass that insult by. He retorted even when he was dying "Do not exult that you have done some heroic act by trampling on my head! In a few seconds dogs and vultures will be doing that act. It does not require a hero to plant his foot on a dying man. You dared not do this when I was capable of hitting back, you coward!" That kind of awareness of one's potentialities and quick response to all happenings must be present in you too. Heroism gushed out even when he was passing away!

The Krishna whose advent you should celebrate is not the cowherd boy who charmed with His flute, but the Krishna the indefinable Divine principle that is born in the navel of the body (Mathura) as the product of Divine Energy (Devaki) that is then transported to the Mouth (Gokula) and fostered by the Tongue (Yasoda) as its source of sweetness. Krishna is the visualization of the Atma that the repetition of the Name grants, the vision was gained by Yasoda; you must foster that Krishna on your tongue. When He dances on it, the poison of the tongue will be ejected completely, without harming anyone as happened when as a child He danced on the hoods of the serpent Kaliya.

Purity of motive is the best guarantee that you will have Peace. An uneasy conscience is a tormenting compassion. Righteous action will have no bad effects, to disturb your sleep or health.:

If there is righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in character;
If there is beauty in character, there will be harmony in the home;
When there is harmony in the house, there will be order in the nation;
When there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the World.

So, be righteous; avoid all prejudices against others on the basis of caste, creed, color, mode of worship, status, or degree of affluence. Do not look down or up on any one; look upon all as Divine as you really are.

All faiths are inter-related and mutually indebted to each other for the principles they teach and the disciplines they recommend. The Vedic religion was the first in time. Buddhism, which appeared about 2500 years ago, was its son; Christianity, which was influenced much by the Orient, was its grandson. And Islam, which has the prophets of Christianity as its base, was the great grandson. All have love as the fundamental discipline of the mind, in order to chasten it and merge man with the Divine.

Vinayaka is called the child of two mothers Gowri and Ganga. You are the pet children of four mothers, each of you; Sathya, Dharma Shanthi and Prema. Do not ridicule them by your act. Honor them and be grateful to them. Do not claim 'Anyaya' (Injustice), 'Akrama' (Indiscipline), 'Asathya' (Falsehood), and 'Anachara' (Evil Behavior) as your mothers. Instead expand your heart, taking in all humanity into the circle of your kin, even the birds, beasts, worms, and insects, trees, and plants. The Vedic Prayer asks that the aspirants heart may be expanded 'Brhathe Koromi'-I make myself vast! The vastest is 'Brahmam'; from which comes the same root, 'brh': to enlarge.

Love must be manifested as service or seva. Seva must take the form of food for the hungry, solace for the forlorn, consolation of the sick and the suffering. Jesus was himself out in such seva. The heart full of compassion is the temple of God. Jesus pleaded at the sight of the poor. Jesus is worshipped but His teachings are neglected. Sai is being worshipped, but His teachings are neglected. Everywhere, pomp, pageantry, hollow exhibitionism and lectures, lectures, lectures! No activity, no Love, no seva. Heroes while lecturing are zeros while putting into practice. Develop compassion. Live in Love. Be Good, Do Good, and See Good. This is the way to God.

Om Sri Sai Ram

FILL THE WORLD WITH LOVE

Bhagawan’s inaugural address to the sixth World Conference of Sai Organisation on 18-11-1995

There is no worse disease Than Greed;

No enemy worse than Anger; nor is there any Misery worse than Poverty;

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa gave the answer, when he told a questioner that if he loved God with the same intensity with which he loved his wife and children he would be able to experience God.

What do I lose when someone criticise me? That is his opinion. It does not affect me.  Those who criticise Baba are suffering from a disease, like those who reject a sweet because they suffer from diabetes.

The development of equanimity is more important than the growth of centers.

The Tamilnadu President, T.G. Krishnamurthy said, that when Swami reincarnates as Prema Sai‚ he should be given the privilege of‚ serving Swami.

Youthhood should be dedicated to purposeful activities. Youth is not related to age. Bhishma, who was 112 years old, was the commander-in-chief of the Kaurava forces. It is will power that determines ones age.

When one reaches sixty, it is a Bharatiya custom to perform Shanthi Puja for the purpose of subduing the six internal enemies  (lust, pride etc.).
