The Save Goa Camapign was initiated by the people residing in Goa, whether native or in-migrants over the years, hwo were aghast to see the indiscriminate cutting of hills and trees, filling of the riversides and destruction of sand dunes and beaches in the name of DEVELOPMENT in Goa. The campaign was formally launched at a public rally held on Monday 18 December, 2006 at the historic AZAD MAIDAN near the memorial of Tristao Braganca e Cunha who sttod for the people of Goa and their rights even during the erstwhile colonial rule. The newspapers on 19 December, a day remembered as the LIBERATION DAY from colonial rule, carried stories of the new liberation movement, started after a thorough study of the Regional Plan 2011, the maps, satellite imagery [thanks to Google Earth] and other documents on Goa. The turn-out of 7000 committed persons [conservative estimate] from all over Goa among the 10,000-odd persons seen at the Azad Maidan on 18 December,2006, for the very first meeting is indicative of the popular base of the Save Goa Movement [also known as Save Goa Abhiyan]
