Has anyone bought helms off of him? I need reviews or thoughts before I commit
as he requires full payment up front apparently.

Some people have and were satisfied. However, I ordered a salade from him. His
first attempt was too small, he misread the measurements. The second was lost
in the mail. The third which I paid for again, was way too large, even estra
padding would not help. He would not return my money. You might be lucky.

Hi All, I too am new, having joined SCA in May of 2011. Up to this
point I have not attended any events, just local Barony gatherings, and
weekly archery practice. With the exception of footwear, which is being
problematic, my garb and equipment are ready, and I expect to start
going to events within a month. But that is not the reason for this
post.

One think I have noticed is: I have no idea where anyone else posting is
located. Since this board is essentially SCA wide, people could be from
anywhere. I have seen posts where people are looking for assistance.
They could be 1000 or more miles away, or just a few miles away in the
adjacent Barony/Shire. I was thinking it might be nice if, when
posting, people add to their signature block, thier Barony/Shire, and
perhaps where that might be (see mine below for example). That
could/would facilitate us in interact with others who may be nearby.

Great idea. :) My location's been in my signature for ages, but I'm glad to see
someone else pointing out how useful it would be.

I had major problems. Never delivered my helm, outright refused to refund my
money. I finally took a pair of spaulders and a really crappy great sword hilt
just so I got something for my money. Another shire member ordered a helm from
him, when he finally got it, many many months late, it was of such poor
workmanship that the Marshall's refused to allow it on the field. Again refused
to refund his money. I discourage anyone I hear mention his name.

Perhaps these files in the CLOTHING section of the Florilegium might
help. Your shoes can range everywhere from modern shoes that aren't
obtrusively non-period, to hand-sewn medieval replicas. It is really
up to you.

For some easier things:
shoes-msg (124K) 5/24/11 Medieval footwear and SCA imitations.

For info on more authentic shoes and period shoes, see:

merch-shoes-msg (32K) 5/18/11 Lists and reviews of period-style
shoe makers.

If you want some general help and directions on making your own shoes,

I just added this article to the NEWCOMERS section of the Florilegium
and I thought some of you here might find it useful.

Lots of useful info on SCA feasts, including utensils, decorating your

Thanks for the links Stefan.  My problem has not been finding footwear, it is
finding footwear that fits.  I have found plenty of shoes and boots that will
work, but shoe manufacturers seem to going with the "one width fits all" idea,
and make only standard width.  To find shoes wide enough, I have to go 2 or 3
sizes larger than I wear, so it is like having a canoe on my foot.  I did find
one boot from Minnetonka, that might work.  Had to go only 1 size up on that.
If that doesn't work, I may have to go custom made, or try making a pair of
turn shoes myself.  We do have a couple people in the barony who have done so,
so I can at least get some good instructions.

Greeting.

Several people mentioned I was being trashed here by a few customers that I had
major problems with -so I thought I would step forward and defend my honor.

I will not stand here and say that I do not make mistakes, or that I will go so
far out of my way to suffer great losses, but I do feel that I go far and above
what most armorers will do. Not everyone is satisfied, but 99% are.

As for these two: Jim Bubb's helmet was shipped with a tracking number and the
number showed it was delivered. I do insure an item if asked, but most people
are satisfied with a tracking number -at least till its lost then they want
their money back! I cannot respond to "his friends" problems since I don't know
who he is -however I defy anyone to prove to me one of my helmets is not legal
by SCA standards!

John/Jon was a bit more complicated. I made the helmet 3 times with different
measurements that he provided and yet it never fit. With 20 years of armouring
experience I would have to say that he was the one that couldn't figure out how
to take measurement. That, or he was expecting me to make the helmet fit like a
custom glove. Most armourer strive for a 3 - 4" spacing for padding and that is
my policy. The second and third helmet were slightly bigger then the first so
for one to be too small and the other to be way to big......? Whatever! It is
true though that I refused a refund because after 3 helmets (one supposedly
lost) and several months - I was out several hundred dollars and I feel that I
went far and above my part of the transaction and John/Jon obviously did not.

Both of these people are on my do not deal with list. I am not saying to ignore
them as it is wise to ask around -however there is such a thing as bad
customers.

For those who do not know; I make and sell low priced SCA legal armor and I
barely make any profit at all. I do this simply to help new fighters get out on
the field with good looking starter armor that won't break their bank account.
you can see my stuff here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/21215018@N07/

This will be my only response to these reviews. They told there side, I told
mine -I will let you decide...

I have a Hjalmr helm. It is his munitions grade 14 ga stainless steel bascinet,
I added a welded stainless aventail with brass verveils, it has served me very
well, and am very happy with the workmanship.
It is solid helmet, with the padding I put in, I have no worries about it
standing up to the abuse of SCA fighting, and dont have any fear of using it
down the road. It arrived as promised on time and at the price I was quoted.

Attached is a pic of me wearing the helm after padding, strapping, and adding
the aventail.

This will be my only response to these reviews. They told there side, I told
mine -I will let you decide...

Sorry to the list for the long post.
It's good to save old posts. So here goes, I'll stop short of calling you out as
a liar I'm hoping its just bad memory, but here are the original posts on the
helm;

Post 1)
WOW.....THIS SUCKS!!!

They say bad luck comes in 3's and they ain't kidding.

1) I was permanently laid off from work today. I have no money coming in to pay
for supplies to continue armoring. So after I finnish up with the last few
orders I have left -I am closing.

2) I discovered this afternoon that someone broke into my shed/shop and stole
most of my tool -including my industrial welder. Without the welder I cannot
finish up most of the helmets I have on order, and bargrills will now have to be
rivited on.

3) Recieved a letter this afternoon (right after I discovered the break
in/theft) from my landlord stating my lease will not be renewed as he is selling
the house. So now I won't have a place to live at the end of the year.

What this means is that I will be refunding the people on my list that I am
unable to help. Unfortunately I have no money as I just paid my rent/bills after
getting laid off. I am going to file for unemployment, but may not get enough to
live on, much less give refunds. All I can do is promise refunds as they come.
To help with this, I am going to be selling off anything not needed and put the
money towards refunds. Hopefully I can get enough to settle my AA debts. I
apologize to those effected and hope you understand the situation.

Those affected are as follow:

Jim Bubb –I finished the spaudlers but cannot finish the basinet (which was ¾
done). Refund forthcoming.
Dennis Heisey –Cannot make the kettlehelm. Refund forthcoming.
John Edgerton - Cannot remake the sallet. Refund forthcoming.

Rodney Woods –Can still make crusader helm, but will take a month or longer to
built it with rivets. Refund?
Ben Stone - Can still make crusader spagnhelm, but will take a month or longer
to built it with rivets. Refund?
Jamie Steeg - Can still make spagnhelm, but will take a month or longer to built
it with rivets. Refund?

No Name – I can make everything on your list, but the spagnhelm will take a
month to make with rivets.

All non-helmet orders will be finished and mailed out shortly. Following this
post will be multiple auction of personal items intended to refund the above
customers. My apologies to everyone involved.

FYI today's post...
Well its been another crappy week or two with nothing but bad luck. I'm still
trying to get out old orders while trying to keep a roof over my head -don't
know how long I can keep doing either. For now though:

HELMETS
1) Jamie Steeg: MS Spagnhelm shipped

2) Jim Bub: MS Bascinet totally screwed up. I spent 3 weeks trying to fix it,
but this welder will not weld it correctly. At this point the helmet is worth
around $4000 in labor alone and it now rests in the trash. I really cannot work
on it anylonger as my other customers are awaiting there helmets. I am just
going to have to give you a refund and my apologies...

3) Ben Stone: MS Closed Faced Spagn/Crusader Helm started today and and now 3/4
of the way finished.

4) James Betty/Miachael McCullough: Crusader helm should be fairly easy and
hopefully I can start on it monday -maybe sooner.

5) Dennis Heisey: MS Kettlehelm is still a go, but after bascinet fiasco above
-my hope is failing...

ARMOR (non-helmets)

1) Riley Owens: SS Sallet shipped
2) Timothy Miller: Fencing gear shipped
3) Stephen Sump: Rattan sword shipped
4) Hannibal Hulvey: Polar bear shield shipped
5) Kevin McLaughlin: 18g SS crusader cops and centerboss shipped
6) David Frister: Armoury book shipped

If I missed someone, please let me know -I'll be in the back of the shop hitting
myself in the head with my remaining hammers...

O.o

Actually been a good week and I got alot done.

1) Jim Bub: Spaudlers mailed
2) Ben Stone: Finished and ready for pickup -see you Sunday!
3) Michael McCullough(James Betty): MS Crusaderhelm finished -PM me!
4) Dennis Heisey: MS Kettlehelm is 3/4 finished -looking good!
5) George Ireson: MS Spagnhelm/3-piece cops
6) Timothy Davis: Payment recieved.
7) Matt Stockton: Payment recieved.

If I missed someone, please let me know.

You never shipped the helm. You refused to refund my money. You finally gave
me a great sword hilt and a pair of clamshell gauntlets instead of a refund.
The gauntlet are in my scrap bin as they were unusable. Several of the nail
"rivets" fell out on thier own without ever being used. There were other
problems with them that two other armorers were unable to fix, so they were
scrapped. I stand by my statements. Some people may have had success with
Hjalmr work, but I haven't seen anything good.

Good gentles,

May I ask that everyone please step back from the heated discussion of
Hjalmr's armor?

There is no policy on this list prohibiting discussion of merchants,
with customers sharing good and bad experiences. Nor is there a policy
against merchants responding to criticism.

This particular thread has been allowed because of the above, but recent
posts are beginning to stray from discussion into accusation/rebuttal,
and that is off-topic for this list.

I am not mandating an abrupt end to the discussion, but do request that
the tone be softened, and if strong words need to be said, that those
words be taken off list.

I do not have a personal stake in one side or the other of the dispute.
My only concern here is that this list's purpose is to assist SCA
newcomers. Merchant discussions are intended to be in the context of
"I'm new and I'm looking for _____. Where is a good place to buy ____?"
This discussion has strayed from that purpose and has become about
interpersonal business disputes, and that is not in keeping with this
list's purpose.

Thank you for your understanding and your assistance in maintaining an
on-topic and useful discussion for newcomers.

Kind regards,

Justin

Apology accepted, M'Lady, and as I said you're the victim here and not
being blamed. :)

That being said, I will note that it's my standard policy to leave an
account on moderated-posting status for a few days even after the
password is changed, just to be on the safe side.

One small tip, to anyone discussing a spam link posted to the list like
this. Be careful not to quote the bad link in the reply to the list, for
that just propagates it further. :)

Having dealt with this particular mode of attack for almost two years
now, on a dozen or more lists that I maintain, I believe that there is a
special, very unpleasant, place on the deepest plane of the Abyss
reserved for the people who perpetrate these account compromises.

Kind regards,

It mostly depends on the rule for the event site. Most outdoor events are pet
friendly, but they usually aren't allowed in any buildings (service dogs are of
course exempt). Check the site rules. wet/dry, pets/no pets, etc. If it
doesn't explicitly say pets are allowed its a good idea to check with the
autocrat.

Hey there, not sure if I can share this here but considering I thought there
might be those interested in it due to the chain maille nature.

I am part of the Chainmaille group on facebook and one of our members and his
wife are in dire straights, losing everything. The members have gotten together
to donate items, mostly of a chain maille nature, I know a scale vest was
donated(size 36inch chest)the stipulation was hand crafted but considering it is
a chain maille group...

Anyways the link to the Auction page is below if anyone might be interested in
that, also we will still be accepting donations to run a second auction as soon
as this one ends if anyone is interested in that part of it you can email me at
athena.moonlightsedge@... for details.
Mostly I just wanted to get the word out.

Bidding started thismorning and goes thru the week until 5 est time on sunday...

Auction has started, come on out and bid on some amazing pieces, everything can
be shipped so it doesnt matter if your local or not.

There are some events the invite dogs. There are dog coursers in the SCA
after all.

As others have said, it all depends on site that is being used. Ask ahead
of time for the event.

As always the law of the land regarding service animals will allow
exceptions for service animals.

One of the best things about SCA events is that I get to pet lots of dogs!
Of course, I check with the owners first before approaching, but the point
is that there are a lot of animals at some events, none at others.

Once in a while, the environment of an event may actually bother a
particular animal, so do pay attention to the animals that you see, just in
case one of them has decided to go on guard duty and go after anyone coming
too close. It's rare, but the environment can be bothersome to pets that
have never been to such before. Mostly though, the dogs seem to love the
attention, and I know I love giving that attention to them!

As others have mentioned, it will depend upon the rules for that
particular site.

And even if they are allowed on site, they may not be allowed in to
the buildings. This is a particular problem if most of the event is
inside. It sometimes mean my wife and I will have to trade off turns
staying outside with the dogs. At one event it was rather hot and
with most events being inside, we ended up taking the dog back to the
motel and letting him stay there during the day.

I have a 16 lb fluff ball, American Eskimo. Definitely not a period
dog but he is a "service" dog in that he pulls a small wooden wagon
that I converted for him to pull. He helps us haul things to camp and
around for demos. He also sometimes pulls water bottles for the
waterbearers.

With a proper wagon, a dog can pull 3 times his wieght and they were
used in period for this.

Here is an updated version of the article (published in TI in 2004)
that I based by wagon conversion on:

I'm still looking for a good article on medieval dog armor or barding
for dogs.
