I will help where I can ...as more historian than genealogist, and it is
something that I work with almost daily ( running a current political and
historical e-list :

The gaps in Scot family histories are common due to the troubles running
from mid 17th century until early 20th century. These ran from the
Covenanters (17th) through the Jacobites (18th) and then the Clearances (
18th and 19th) ( in a period spotted all along with just groups voluntarily
seeking land and opportunity): but those the three major elements creating
the Scot Diaspora and the dispersals and scattering that made so many of us
Americans :-)

Interested in your first name as just 'Ros' ... It is the earliest
appellation for the area now known as Wester and Easter Ross in NE Scotland
around Tain... not becoming a Clan name ( Ross ) until after 1374 ... and
then also a Surname after that. Ros and Ross are still common first names
and surnames in the area ... as well a those descended. It was originally
just a general Gaelic and old Norse term for a land mass between fjords ,
firths or rivers ... as the Easter/Wester Ross land mass is.

Clan Ross carried forward a clan tradition that was Anrias and Gilleandreas
prior to the Ross naming of the same group.

When doing family research please remember there is a difference between
Inverness and Inverness Shire. My Granny, Mother's mother, was a MacIntosh from
Inverness, originally from Avimore area. Also Ross Shire is next to Inverness
and many of the wee villages and towns are in fact in Ross and not
Inverness. For instance the Black Isle, is/was a part of Ross & Cromerty. Nairn
is in
another county, and all three are only 20 or so miles apart. Avimore,
Newtonmore, Kingussie etc., is about 2 hours up the Perth Road, and Inverness
also
includes Skye.

The library beside the New Bridge, (not all that new) will be of great help.
I would suggest if going over you get a ScotRail unlimited ticket so you can
bomb around all over via public transport. The Highland roads can fog in
rather quickly, the rain can cause a few problems, and there are few if any dual
carriageways. (Interstate/2 lane highways.) Remember everywhere is
Scotland, especially the Highlands is either up or down hill. Wear good and
comfortable shoes.

Jock Tamson was Rabbie (Robert) Burns' name for God. Whether someone has written
a series of books on the subject I don't know. As far as I know this is my
understanding of the origin of the phrase. We are all Jock Tamsons Bairns - We
are all god's children.

Hi,

I can't help Happy Feet 5 on John Hutton who married Helen Rind in
1731 and died in Leuchars in 1761, but he might like to know that
there is a farm called the Rhynd on the edge of Tentsmuir a couple of
miles NNE of Leuchars - possibly Helen's homeland.

I have a name in the 1891 census for North Queensferry, and I think it may be a

his wife Mary Chalmers is listed as being born in Gibralter, and has in brackets
British subject.
How can I find her maiden name and that of her parents?? I just need steering in

Hi Janet,

Good for you! Let's stir the list up a bit.

I have Gavins in Ayrshire moving slowly into Renfrewshire and
concentrating in Kilbarchan and Paisley as the weaving industry got
going there.

If any of the following interest you, I shall send you my relevant data.

A Hugh Gavin fathered Hugh Gavin, born 17 Jan 1709.

Hugh Gavin (b.1709) married Jean Bailly (born 15 Oct 1721 West
Kilbride, daughter of James Bailly and Jean Montgomery) 30 Nov 1739 in
Dalry. They had 8 children, all recorded "lawful children of Hugh
Gavin of Thornyside", Dalry:

Hugh b.1740.
John b.12 Sep 1742. Died as infant.
Janet b.1744.
John b.9 Nov 1746.
James b.19 Jan 1749.
Robert b.19 Sep 1750. Died as infant.
Jean b.28 Apr 1754.
Robert b.18 Mar 1760.

Robert Gavin b.1760, a shawl weaver, on 2 Dec 1780 in Kilbarchan,
married Margaret Davie from the parish of Kilbirnie. They had 4
children, all born in Kilbarchan. I could go on from there in good
detail, but no longer in Ayrshire.

Let me know if we have any "fit".

Betty,

Have you looked for their marriage and/or their deaths within
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ? It's a pay-per view site. Finding the wife
Mary CHALMERS' death, cross-checking with Robert's death, should help find
her m/s, although that will depend on if the informant knew her details.
Hopefully the informant will have been one of her children and that they _
did know. The death registries _ should _ contain the names of both Mary's
and Robert's parents, including their mothers' m/s.

All the best,
Toni ~ Ontario

Betty Dee is looking for details of Robert Chalmers wife recorded as
Mary, born in Gibraltar in Dunfermline in the 1891 census.

I had a look at marriages in Scotland at <http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
  > involving Robert Chalmers and Mary ?, 1971 to 1891 and found 6. The
brides and years and places of marriage were:

Mary Black: 1873 Glasgow City
Mary Annie E Gibbons: 1891 Alloa
Mary Jamieson: 1875 Beith
Mary Johnstone: 1888 Inverkeithing
Mary Scott: 1882 Dalkeith
Mary Smith: 1891 Kilsyth

All of them had Images available to view for the usual fee, but I
would bet on Mary Johnstone, married in Inverkeithing.

The National Archives at Kew has details of marriages in places like
Gibraltar but they cannot be accessed for the time being because they
are being Digitalised. I would guess Mary Chalmers was the daughter of
a serviceman.

Hello Betty
I think I may have found Mary Chalmers for you - I have had a look on the
Scotlands people site and found what i believe is Robert Chalmers marriage to a
Mary. Everything seems to match up with the info on the census reports ie. ages
and Roberts occupation and North Queensferry area. I had some unused credits on
the site so downloaded the marriage registration. would you like me to send it
to you direct to your email address?
If it is the right person it gives you her maiden name, and her parents names
including her mothers maiden name
   Regards
   Janet

Its a while since I have needed help, but once again I'm stuck!!
I have a name in the 1891 census for North Queensferry, and I think it may be a
relative. The name Robert Chalmers born in Dunfermline is listed as head, but
his wife Mary Chalmers is listed as being born in Gibralter, and has in brackets
British subject.
How can I find her maiden name and that of her parents?? I just need steering in
the right direction so any help is much appreciated, many thanks, Betty
