Hi, i was wondering whether there are any records available for travel between
ireland and scotland.

i'm trying to see whether i can find records of travel of my great great
grandparents John Egen b:abt 1877 scotland & Mary Ann Egen nee Sweeney born abt:
1880 Ireland and there 2 children John b:abt 1899 & Nellie b:abt 1902/1903 moved
from Ireland to Scotland around 1903 after Nellie's birth. They had another
child in 1903 Lanark Scotland, so this is how i determined there travel year.
John and Mary Ann were married in londonderry 1898, so it could be possible that
they were in Londonderry before they moved.

Thanks in advance

Very few indeed. The travel distance so very short, fisher
boats and ferries required no "paper work". Visas and
passports are a modern "inconvenience"

Chezza: Since at that time all of Ireland and Scotland were part of the U.K.
there would be no immigration type records. What I would be inclined to do is
check and see what shipping companies existed for that period of time and then
see if there are any existing passenger records (manifests): You might want to
check the Linen Hall Library in Belfast and see what if anything they have on
the subject as they have a great deal of maritime information. You also need to
look at two ports of embarkation Londonderry and Belfast
Finding ship records is tough, I personally have searched over 300 ships for my
settlers from Antrim, N.I. to America in 1735 and never found what I was looking
for. Some manifest merely said "passengers".

I had the same dilemma and was informed that no records were kept. Like you I
had to guestimate the arival time in Scotland from Ireland with childrens dates
and places of birth. Good luck.
If some one on the site knows any different, I would also be interested to know.

As far as I know there were no records for travel between two ports within the
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland as people would not have been
classed as emigrating to another country - they were just travelling within the
UK.

There was/is so much movement of goods and people, both legal and illegal
via wee fishing boats, ferries, sailing ships, etc. Even small yachts. On a
calm day you can row the ten miles or so,. Remember your "Irish" records
will be with other British records because while all the nations within the
U.K. have different names, they, at the time you mention, all had a single
parliament/administration in London. As did the whole of Ireland.
Hope this helps a wee bit.

annemurray56@...

A message for Jean Edwards researching the Keenan Family

Dear Jean

My name is Anne Murray (nee Lynch) and I came across your message on the
internet, I realise it is a few years old, but I have the information you need
regarding Roderick William Keenan 1872 to 1938 (died from a heart attack) - he
was my maternal grandfather. My mother Eileen Patricia Keenan - married William
Arthur Lynch in 1940 - was Roderick's 7th child. It is true that there is no
further information on him after the 1881 census as at the age of 14/15 years he
ran away to sea and became a merchant seaman. I do believe he returned to the
family home in Maryhill Glasgow a couple of years later for a visit but he did
eventually settle in Balmain Sydney Australia. Sydney was his base for all his
assignments as a merchant seaman. He met my grandmother - Anne Torpy - in
Sydney and they were married in 1907. Roderick was 11 years older than Nanna
Anne. They had 8 children, 2 males & 6 females:

1. Margaret Wilhelmina "Mina" 1907- 1984 - married William J P Vinson:
children William 1931-1951, Noel, Tony, Maureen, Annette & Patrick
2. Norah Evelyn 1909 - 1986 - married Jack Ford: children Peter, Maria &
Kathleen
3. James Michael 1911-1985
4. Roderick William 1915-1988? ?
5. Kathleen Mary 1916-1998 - married Stanley Gordon Smith: children Linda
6. Sheila 1917-1917 died aged 3 days
7. Eileen Patricia 1919-1977 (my mother) - married William Arthur Lynch
children: Dennis Michael, Terrance John 1948-1963 horse trackwork accident -
apprentice jockey, Anne Elizabeth (me)
8. Veronica Desma 1923-1934 died aged 10 years, car accident hit and run

My mother also told me that Roderick was a performer, singer/dancer, and
entertained his fellow crew members during their assignments. This musical
ability has been passed down, mum was a great singer, I love singing/ dancing
and only stopped my ballet classes a few years ago after 38 years of lessons
(ballet, tap, jazz - all amateur nothing professional) and my brother Dennis is
a great drummer. Other than the above information I don't know much else about
him, I have never seen a photo of him, no one seems to have one, I have always
been interested to see what he looked like. Mum said that there is Spanish in
the family - I don't know if it is the Keenan or Torpy side - but Mum had olive
skin, green eyes and jet black hair while all her other sisters and her mother
Anne all had blue eyes. The green eyes apparently is the Spanish "coming
through", during her lifetime mum was always being asked if she was Spanish or
Italian. I also have green eyes as does my elder son Brett Andrew and his
daughter Kya Paris. I also have another son Glenn James, my husband is Colin
William Murray.

My searches revealed Roderick's parents as Patrick Keenan 1851-1920, born in
Stonehouse Glasgow and Mary "Minnie" Henny or Henney born about 1854 in Glasgow
children: Roderick William 1872-1938, James 1877- , Patrick 1879-, Arthur
1882-, Nora 1886-, Frederick 1888- (your grandfather), Leslie 1890-. I did not
know about Thomas 1873 and his name did not come up in the 1881, 1891 or 1901
census I was able to access, maybe he died young?

Patrick Keenan 1851-1920 (house painter): Parents were James Keenan
(labourer) born abt 1826 in Ireland and Unity Keenan (maiden name unknown) born
abt 1828-1830 in Ireland and their children were: Patrick 1851-1920 (Roderick's
father), Mary Ann 1856-, James 1859- & Rose 1865- . I don't know their marriage
date or whether it happened in Ireland or Scotland. This is as far back as I
could go, it is difficult to get Irish records because of the 1922 fire in the
Dublin registry archive office and I always come to a dead end. My father's
family - the Lynches - and mum's mother - the Torpys - were all from Ireland and
I have the same problem.

I hope all this information helps, if you have managed to find out anything else
about the Keenans I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. As mum died over
30 years ago and all her siblings are all deceased now it is difficult to come
across information or stories. I prefer using email as I don't know how to use
facebook etc. and have cancelled my ancestry.com account as I had researched all
the family as far as I could go. This email has grown but I hope you find the
content interesting.

Best wishes
Anne Murray (nee Lynch)

William was my 4 great grandfather. I have been researching the Hood family and
have some information I would be willing to share with you.
The family had a genealogy done in the 1950s and I have a partial copy.
Unfortunately, it has some errors and assumptions that i am having to correct
but it is a starting place. Please let me know if you would like to exchange
information.

Hello

I am searching for a Peter Hawkins, born in Ayrshire in 1823.  This information
comes from transcripts of his children's births.  They were born in Bathurst,
NSW, between 1849 and 1864, so Peter came to Australia sometime between 1823 and
1849.  I can't find a birth for him on Scots-origins, and both Peter and Hawkins
were unusual names for an Ayrshire lad.  So his father may have been a
traveller, a merchant, or soldier perhaps.  I haven't been able to find any
immigration or death records either.  He's quite a mystery.  Peter was my
paternal great-great-grandfather.  I'd be very grateful for any clues.

Thanks

Richard

Dear Maureen and David,
I am interested in your discussions as I am descended from MAHOOD HOOD
MCHOOD MQUID and any variation on the spelling of the name that one
could imagine.
I have them originating from Dromore County Down Ireland, my line went
to Scotland during the Irish potato famine of the 1840 1850's and show
up on the census there.
A letter I have from an aunt says that we are connected to the poet
'HOOD'.
I think not - they were originally Nurserymen with plant nursery's and
then they became Labourer's or Ag. Labourers.
A third cousin says that when her line left Ireland, they got on the
boat as MAHOOD and when they reached Australia they became HOOD and
remained that way which is why she had trouble
finding their ancestors.
I am telling you this because I am wondering if they were originally
HOOD before they became MAHOOD MCHOOD etc., and thought a new country
would be ideal to return to their original name.
Kind regards
Brenda

My name is Nelson McClinton and my mother is a Campbell. I live in Ottawa,
Ontario, Canada.

This will sound fairly remote: in Ontario,Canada we have a Renfrew Ontario and
a village (Admaston) nearby that has and had many Campbell's. My Grandfather was
Bertie Eric Campbell (1880-1950) His father (my great-grandfather) began I
believe in Canada in a town called Restico (8 hours north of Ottawa, Ontario
where I live)- he was a one-man town post-master, etc. My grand-father owned
about 1,000 acres and has a road called "Campbell-line-Road named after the
family (road still exists and remains farmland)...my grandfather then moved to
Alberta Canada - where my mother (Bertie Jean Campbell) was born (1920). Most
of them left for British Columbia (where I was born (1949))I am a
musician/teacher and moved from Vancouver British Columbia to Ottawa Ontario
(Canada) in 1972 where I joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Concert Band
as a saxophone/flute musician.

I have heard that my great-grandfather's first wife died after having several
children and then he remarried and had more children - some disagree. but I
have not researched any of this.

I am researching my family in Scotland. The Meiklejohns came from Bothwell,
Uddingston. I even have the exact address but can't seem to find anyone to see
if the old house still exists.

My favorite relative is Jessie/Janet Meikldjohn who, in 1874, gave birth to a
boy, George. He grew up with his grandfather and uncles. Jessie didn't put a
father on the birth certificate and when she later married, the boy didn't come
with her and her new husband.

I'm frustrated! Don't know where else to look for the father!

Gordon,

I've been looking through my various records I hold and I really haven't been
able to find anything of use for your friend.

From the Registry of BDMs (and I am assuming that your friend has this material
already but I am giving it here in case he hasn't got this stuff) it appears
Peter Hawkins married Susanna Jones at the Presbyterian Church in Bathurst in
1849. They then proceeded to have the following children: John (1849), George
(1853), Margery (1856), Rebecca (1858), Louisa (1859), possibly Alice (1859),
and Christina (1861). Richard will need to purchase the respective birth
certificates though to confirm if indeed these children are correct. And not
knowing where Richard is from he may also not know that Australian certificates
state place of birth of the parents which is useful to confirm if the stated
birthplace is the same for each child.

The only Peter Hawkins I could find dying between 1860 and 1900 is for one at
Cooma in southern NSW in 1874. Again you would need to purchase the certificate
for confirmation.

I also found a Peter Hawkins from Scotland who was a mariner and fitted the bill
until I realised that he was sailing backwards and forwards between Melbourne &
Sydney while the various children were being born in Bathurst - so I can't see
him being in two places at the same time. Although on second thoughts - he was
definitely travelling between Melbourne and Sydney between 31 Jul 1854 and 4 Apr
1855 which is between the births of George (1853) & Margery (1856). This time
period in Bathurst is also when the gold rushes were on in that district so
there is also a chance that Peter arrived in the colony as a crew member to make
his fortune like the thousands of others. And of course if it wasn't working out
he could have topped up his finances by going back to seafaring.

Other than that, there was a small newspaper item naming a Peter Hawkins (in
Bathurst) who was assaulted by another man and when the police intervened Peter
Hawkins had to show his certificate. I'm assuming here that the certificate is
for his freedom after serving a convict sentence. If this is indeed him then I
wasn't able to locate his convict record which suggests he had changed his name
to Peter Hawkins upon freedom so as to distance himself from convict status.

Hope some of the above of is of interest to Richard.

Jennie.

and I find him listed in the Martyrs List of 1689, there are two listings of
that name and both are a little vague. First I find he was shot in 1685 at
Carrick. I also see a vague entry that he might have been a prisoner at
Dunnottar Castle Prison and was shot escaping.

My quesion is this:where was his actual home ? Were prisoners transported to
another area after capture or what ?

children Margaret [13.6.1862] Ann [6.9.1864] and William [23.6.1868]. who were
all born in Ladhope. In the census of 1871 they do not show up anywhere. James

23yrs old thus born about 1832.

Hi,

With all the discussion of Bathfield, I thought I'd ask. I have been
unable to determine the origins of the name Bathrick. Has anyone come
across the name in their research? Is it Scottish?

Hi

I have looked at the Marriage entry for James Hosier and Emma Bathfield
who was the widow of James B Schaw. That entry shows her father was William
Henry Bathfield and her mother was named Elizabeth but no maiden name is
recorded on the entry.

The entry confirms that Emma was a widow and shows she married as Emma
Schaw. James Hosie was aged 51 and the Manager of Forth Iron Works and resided
in Dunfermline. Emma was aged 45 and resided at Headswood Cottage, Denny
where the marriage took place after Banns according to the Forms of the
Church of Scotland. The marriage took place on 29th July 1862 and was
registered
at Denny on 30th July 1862

The record for Emma's death shows she died 5 Caulton Terrace, Maryhill,
Glasgow and both of her parents were deceased. However, only her father's
surname is stated and only her mother's given name.
