Hi. I have an ibm selectric model 72. I went to turn it on the other day and
the 'big wheels keep on turning,' as if the return key were stuck. Any idea
what I can do? Thanks, Bryan
Hello
I just bought a red Selectric II and found the following problems:
i- The element appears to be stick as I am unable to remove it --any
thoughts what I might do
ii- when I hit "return", the carrier does not go all the way back to
the left at once ....I have to keep hitting return and it goes in
fits and starts as if I had multiple tabs set ( which I made sure was
clear.)as it also advances to the next line each time too. Any ideas
what I might to do fix this?
Please email me privately as aquilter(at)hvc(dot)rr(dot)com and I
will be eternally grateful......

I have a Correcting Selectric III that I purchased off of e-bay, and
had it refurbished. The only problem is that it has several really
bad chips in the paint.
I would like to re-paint it, but not the current beige color. I
have seen pics of several Selectric III in a sort of dark red color,
which I'm really starting to like.
If anyone has pictures of Selectrics in this color would you be so
kind as to e-mail them to me, with a little luck I might be able to
match the color somehow.
Thanks,
Jim
Hello, I have liked Selectrics ever since they first hit the market in
a big way. Yes, I am old enough to remember that! The typewriter with
the little golf ball was quite fascinating, and I clearly remember the
first time I saw one, in a church secretary's office.
I have a really nice Selectric II in the dark blue color, which I like
quite a lot. I prefer the bold-colored models! Coral, blue, black ---
far more interesting than "corporate beige!" (How many different
colors were there, by the way? I have seen beige, white, black, coral,
blue and yellow. Were there others?)
Anyway, the main reason for joining this group and writing is to ask
if anyone knows a source for original Selectric dust covers? I'd
prefer the original charcoal-colored one but have also seen them in
"after-market" or "off-brand" transluscent white which, if that's all
that's available, would be okay too.
My model is the one with the longer carriage -- not super long, like
the Mimeograph model, but I think about 13" long. In other words, it's
not the one with the very short letter-sized carriage.
It is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic shape but lacks a dust
cover which I think is very important. One of the best innovations of
the III was the fold-down plastic cover. That was a brilliant idea!
Thanks very much--
I gentleman on E-Bay sells the plain black plastic dust cover for IBM Selectric
II and III, and have bought two from him for my Selectric III's. His E-Bay
store is Vinnie's Recondtioned IBM Typewriters

I recently purchased two GP Technology Elements from E-Bay for my
Selectric III and Model 95, I have not been able to test them on the
Selectric III, but when I tested them on the Model 95, they worked
just fine until I went the change them. When I went to remove them
they seemed stuck, I could not remove the element by lifting on the
black lever, I had to remove the ribbon and grab the element in the
middle to remove it
Is this a problem with the elements or the typewriter? My genuine
IBM don't have this problem just the GP elements. I can't test the
elements on the Selectric III a friend is using to type some legal
documents.
Thanks,
Jim
If anyone has a Selectric I, II, or III with the fabric ribbon
mechanism, you know how dirty the elements can become. Well I
discovered something that cleans them better than rubbing alcohol.
It's Wrights Silver Cream. I used this on a cheap toothbrush. It
took off all the ink and the elements looked like they were brand
new!
Does anyone here know of a source for a Correcting Selectric II
(vintage 1981) service manual?
I just got what I thought was a killer deal on a typewriter from an
eBay vendor, but it has some problems. Rather than return it and
complain, I have been offered a partial refund, if I can fix the
stuff, myself. First, the cord that moves the carriage is
disconnected (the end link is still there, it is just pulled from
its lug). I need some guidance on replacing that properly. Second,
the margin release key is stuck in a depressed position. Third, it
appears there is a wire or cable connected to the carriage that is
pinched within the body of the typewriter. I don't know its
function or where it SHOULD be, but it certainly does not look right!
If anyone is willing to copy a page or two from a manual (if I
cannot find one for sale), it would be GREATLY appreciated by a
fellow Selectric fan and new owner.

Whoops! that was supposed to be Selectric III (3, that is).

Man, this could be a major ordeal...
Ok, the cord problem first. If it's disconnected from the carrier,
then it's also unwound on the drum. Trust me on this. Getting it back
on is not gonna be easy. First thing, remove the plastic covers,
stand back, take a deep breath, and look at the drum. You'll also
notice that the return cord (on the rear) is likely off as well. If
its' not, then you're awful lucky. If it is, then you're like the
rest of us. The return and tab cords are tensioned against each other
by the tab cord pulley on the right frame. The entire carrier is
tensioned to the right by the large spring attached to the rear drum.
If you're really interested in reinstalling this cord, let me know
and I'll try to explain it the best I can. I've done it plenty of
times, and I'm here to tell you it's not easy.
Secondly, the margin release problem is likely a broken spring or
maybe the pitch control. More information is needed.
Thirdly, the wire or cable you've mentioned could be the velocity
cable. It is supposed to got into the carrier on ther left side. It
actually doesn't look like it's supposed to be there, but it is.
If the machine were operational I could offer some suggestions as to
troubleshooting techniques, but with the tab cord disconnected I'm at
a loss.
Good luck!

Thanks for the help and words of encouragement, Lennie! My assistant knew a
retired IBM repairman (victim of downsizing of non-digital departments) here
in the Reno area, and he put it all back together like it was nothing! He
pointed out several things he took care of, and a couple extras I had not
yet even noticed, and only charged me $50 + a couple tall cold ones. Such a
deal, eh?!
I'll keep an eye on the forum to help me keep this old warrior marching into
battle for a long time to come. The service manual would still be a very
welcomed item, if anyone knows of a source for such an item.
Thanks again!
Rick

Hi my name is Burt and I am network admin for a small community bank.
We have some "older" technology that I have no experience with but
they they like me to take a shot at fixing before calling a real
repairman. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with the
IBM Wheelwriter series. I am getting an error when I turn one on. Any
help of any kind, even if it is pointing me in another direction
would be GREATLY appreciated.
Burt
What error are you getting? Wheelwriters are fairly easy to
troubleshoot. The common problems are sensors being dirty, printwheel
being misaligned, and other such maladies. I can't recall ever having
major electronic problems with one.

Hello everyone!
I just purchased a Selectric Typewriter Adjustment and Parts Manual.
What I am looking for now is a manual that this manual calls out. I
need what is called a separate part number/price list manual which
contains reference numbers, part numberes part descriptions and
prices.I would be happy with just the part numbers and discriptions.
I'm not worried that the price list is out of date. I just want to
know what to call the gizmo I need to order.
Thanks,
Tim

Hello Everyone,
I was talking to a lady at Lexmark about parts for the typewiter and
she informed me that Lexmark is getting out of the IBM typwriter
business. She informed me that to get parts Electronic Business
Machine is the place to go for parts. She gave me their phone number
for parts it is 1-800-832-6522 and they can be found on the web at
ebmstore.com. I hope that this info is helpful to anyone repairing
their IBM Selectric typwriter.
Tim
I recently loaned my Selectric III to a friend who has not yet returned
it (some friend). I'm thinking about getting a replacement. I found
this one on e-bay and this is the only problem with it;
"The only problem is that the correction feature does not seem to work.
When the correction key is hit, the element back spaces, but does not
strike and the correction ribbon does not rise. I suspect this would
require a very minor repair to correct".
Is this a minor repair?
Thanks for you input!

Well, I was finally able to pay off the shop that repaired my Model D,
it was quit an expensive repair job, but worth every penny! It works as
though it was brand new! I have noticed a big difference in the sound
of the regular Model D and the Model D Executive; the Executive does not
seem to be as loud as the standard D when typing.
This will be the newest addition to my collection when it arrives:
HERMES 51 MEMORY TYPEWRITER WORD PROCESSOR.

interesting machine. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Would you be interested in purchasing a Canon Model

I have a saved PDF of a Selectric and Correcting Selectric III. I also have
a original Selectric 71 & 72 manual, that I could scan, but I don't know how
to make PDF files. I have Adobe Reader 6.0, and Adobe ImageReady 7.0 and
Adobe PhotoShop 7.0, but I don't know how to use them fully. I would be
willing to scan the manual.

That is the link to the web page where I downloaded the Selectric II
and Selectric III manuals. I'll post it in the links section of

Thetypewriterguy: I would greatly appreciate it if you could get me

I'm in the process of scanning my Selectric 71/72 Instruction Manual.
However, it will be one page at a time and in the .jpg format. Sorry but
that's the best I can do. After it is completely scanned I can burn it onto
cd if any is interested please contact me offline.
