Archie,
Didn't pay enough money, so I have to find something
else because I am drowning in bills. It was fun, but
I have to do something to make a living. At least I
left in good standing and the door is open if they

It was fun, but you have to pay the bills. Looking down the road and
what the budget was going to be, there was no change in the next year
or two to improve, so I didn't have incentive to stay. It is sad to
be such an expert in interpretation, but earn less than the fries or
slurpie guy.

Probably won't be there for Sorghum fest. Grayhawk got another job

I have updated my Seminole War webpage, and it is now hosted by
Tallahassee Freenet. The advantages are that there are no annoying
pop-up ads and other stuff that you don't want to see. With the help
of some friends, I have made a few changes, but the content is the
same. (First time anyone else has helped me with it since I started
the webpage in 1996.)

Check it out and feel free to send me comments. Sorry for the funny
looking url, but that's what I get for free.

The Florida Frontiersmen http://www.floridafrontiersmen.com has just

They have said that the requirement does not apply to personal tents
only commercial tents.

Howdy All. Ft. Foster's Christmas garrison will be held on Sat Dec.
21st and Sun. Dec. 22nd; the weekend before Dade's Battle this year.
There will be tours during the day. On Sat. night the Friends of the
park come out for a night tour and have a pot-luck dinner. The
reenactors are planning to feed ourselves this year after the taters
(spectators) have departed.
This X-mas garrison began as a grand event several years ago, but its
gone downhill to the point that last year none of the reenactors that
came out dressed out. ENOUGH of THat! Too, there has been the problem
of the reenactors doing a program for the taters, while they eat, and
the reenactors get stuck with cookies and maccarroni. As I said, a
few of us are planning to prepare food just for the historical types,
just like during the average living history weekends at the fort.
There will be day tours at 1 PM sat., and 11 AM sun. besides the Sat.
night special tour and pot-luck for the park volunteers.

I want to share this email from Nancy Miller. She
said to tell everyone that the little red-haired lady
without any fingers who can type 65 wpm and play the
piano is overjoyed. She was so happy that she was in
tears. From last year when she was bringing us the
petition at Dade Battlefield, to this past week, her
dreams have come true beyond anyone's expectation.
Not only has she gotten more than she realized was
possible, but by the full endorsement by Governor
Bush. And any site found in the area will be
purchased by the government to add to the site. Not
only the 200 acres she mentions, but all the public
land connected with it. Not even Fort King went so
fast thought the system to save the site. She will be
at Dade Battlefield at the end of the month, and will
be happy to tell the full story. One Above has really
looked upon her with favor. I have seen 3 different
bald eagles this week, so I knew that this is a
special time.

Besides being the site of one of the major battles in
the 2nd Seminole War that involved Creeks and
Seminoles fighting against each other, the Wahoo Swamp
is an important part of Florida's environment. Over
3,000 endangered plants and animals have been
identified there, including plants that have not been
seen anywhere else in Florida since the 1870's. The
place is a wonder to behold. Minimal development is
planned, to preserve this important site for all of
us.
Sincerely,
Chris

Hi Chris, Great news!!!! WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!
WAHOO is being
brought by the State of
Florida's " Florida Forever Project" For full
Preservation!!!!! We will get
about 200 acres or so for the actual
Battlefield. We have also been
approved for our Federal Grant to start
full Archaeological assessment's
on the Site. Please give me a call so
I
can tell you more. I am wiped
out and just got home from Tallahassee. I
am going to take a nice breather
for the Holiday's. Talk with you soon.

A newsletter of Florida park volunteers named Ralph Van Blarcom as
Volunteer of the Year. Ralph is one of only two people who have
received this award for this year. Some of you probably know Ralph
from Fort Foster. The newsletter says:

Ralph Van Blarcom, Hillsborough River State Park, has taken a
leadership role in many park and CSO projects. In 2001, he volunteered
1,668 hours and has contributed over 5,000 hours in six years. During
that time, he has taken charge of improvements and expansion of the
living history programs presented at Fort Foster, the park's
reconstructed Seminole War Fort. Among the many projects he has
spearheaded are the Fort Foster Memorial, the first web site for Ft.
Foster, black powder training for the park's reenactors, direction of
numerous Eagle Scout projects, the Fort Foster Rendezvous and living
history programs for children. Ralph has been honored by numberous
park and community awards for his service to the park.

If anyone sees Ralph, be sure to congratulate him!

I wrote the following letter to Military Heritage magazine about their
recent article. I find Dade's battle full of a lot of ironies.

Dear Military Heritage,

Thank you for your article on Dade's Battle in the February 2003
issue. As someone who has researched the war extensively, I would
like to add a few more very interesting items about the battle.
One of the biggest ironies of the battle was that ten years earlier,
Captain Francis Dade took one company of soldiers and built the
military road that he would later be killed upon. If he seemed
unconcerned for the safety of his command, it was because that ten
years earlier he had opened the road during an Indian upraising with
only half the soldiers that he had in 1835.

There was one officer from Dade's command that survived. When Captain
Gardiner arrived with the command and joined Major Dade, Lt. Benjamin
Alvord was sent back to Fort Brooke. Alvord never mentioned much
about Dade's command. He was the last officer to see Major Dade
alive. Alvord participated in the last campaign of the war in 1842
with Col. William J. Worth in April 1842, so he had the distinction of
participating in the first and last campaigns of the war.

At the same time, General Duncan Clinch was gathering a large force at
Fort Drane for a campaign to drive the Seminoles out of the
Withlacoochee and down to Fort Brooke. The companies he removed from
Fort King left the same morning that Major Dade was killed.

During Clinch's battle on the Withlacoochee three days after the death
of Major Dade, none of the Army there knew the fate of Dade and his
command, but they were beginning to suspect the worst. A letter
written at Fort King by Lt. Joseph W. Harris mentioned the following:
"The troops from Tampa have not yet arrived and we feel exceedingly
anxious about them. It is said a soldier's knapsack was found on the
battle ground of the 31st; dropped by one of the enemy."

Besides Osceola's death at Fort Moultrie in SC, one of the other
Seminole leaders prominent during December 1835 also perished in the
process of removal. Ote Emathla, or Jumper, died and was buried at
Fort Pike near New Orleans. From being at Fort Mimms in 1813 to
Dade's defeat, few Indians like Jumper had ever seen so many dead
white men.

Sincerely,
Christopher Kimball

I just received this from Nancy Miller. This is just down the road
from Dade Battlefield, and looks like a worthwhile event. As most of
you know, Sumter County has a lot of history connected to the 2nd
Seminole War. Date is Saturday March 29th. Remember that this is a
festival and not a reenactment, which is why they have the fee. Nancy
has done a great job with the Historical Society in the county, as
well as saving the Wahoo Swamp and Battlefield recently.

Hi Chris, just a quick note to let you know that I am in charge
of coordinating the 150th Birthday Party for Sumter County. That's
right we turned 150 years old. The party will be held at the
fairgrounds near Bevilles corner on Hwy. 471 between Center Hill and
Webster, Florida.
I would like to offer you and anyone else who wishes to
participate in this party a chance to get the first line row where we
are setting up our Vendor Booth's. It is only $30.00 for the day and
you can sell anything you like. Tell stories, give demonstrations or
what ever you like. The fee's will pay for the price or the insurance
and the use of the Fairground's. Any profits will be split between
the Sumter historical Society and the Sumter Boy's and Girls Club. We
are doing this to promote the history of Sumter County and the State
of Florida and how we became a county. Hence, (the government took the
land from the indians.)
Chris if you know of any group of reactor's for either side of
the Seminole War's please pass this along to them. The sumter County
Historical Society will be using their funds that they receive to help
build a Cultural Center and Museum for the Kid's to learn from. So
please let everyone know. They can contact me for any information that
maybe needed and I can forward them onto the right person who may be
handling whatever they may need. The date of the Party is March 29th,
2003, and to be held from 10:00am to 5:00pm. All vendors and crafters
or whoever will be allowed in the day before to set up their area.
Please call me and let me know what you think. It would be a pleasure
to have you and some of the group to participate in teaching the kid's
of this state about our History.

                       Sincerely,
                       Nancy Miller

Christine Smalls is calling for an accurate count of those who wish
to participate in this event. It is scheduled to be held February 22-
23. If you can make it please respond via my email rodent70@...
so I can get her numbers. If you know anyone that is interested and
not on a member of this group please let them know.

There was a large contingent of militia at this battle and CW
reenactors may opt to come out and use their percussion cap rifled-
muskets. Appropriate wear should be trousers of any color other than
sky blue, a civilian shirt, civilian headgear and CW accouterments
although white leather is preferred but there was a great deal of
blackened leather used on campaign during this period. I encourage
all members of this site to try and recruit new people to this hobby
that is startoing to fade away unless we try and save this hobby
which is nearly forgotten to most Floridians, part time and full time
residents.

This event is held on the actual battlefield and the society there is
very accomadating. Food, hay, and firewood is provided all weekend.
Last year there was a auction and party, with a live band, at a local
establishment all proceeds went to save this battlefield. If you need
directions please email me and I will get that for you. This is a
great event and always a good time.

I am your most humble and obedient servant,
Matt Overton
