Wärtsilä Corporation was awarded a turnkey contract for the supply of a 40 MWe power plant in Madagascar in September. The plant is due to be handed over to the customer, the Madagascar water and power company JIRAMA (Jiro sy Rano Malagasy), in August 2007. It will be located at Mandroseza in the capital of Antananarivo.

The new power plant will be equipped with four Wärtsilä 18V38 diesel generating sets, having a combined electrical output of 40 MWe. The engines will burn heavy fuel oil and will be employed for base-load operation.

The project, worth approximately MEUR 30, is being partly financed by a 51% grant from the Government of The Netherlands. The remainder will be provided through a ten-year commercial loan, collateral for which will be credit insurance granted by the credit institution of The Netherlands.

The Mandroseza power plant will allow JIRAMA to avoid load shedding on the interconnected grid of Antananarivo. This will both enhance the local economy and drastically reduce the utility’s production costs.

The Mandroseza power plant marks a major step towards strengthening electricity supply in Madagascar and extending its availability to more of the island’s population.

In addition to this order, Wärtsilä was awarded a contract in May this year to supply ten skid-mounted Wärtsilä 20 diesel generating sets with a combined output of 15 MW to a local investor, Enelec, for installation in three other towns.

Two particular challenges in the Mandroseza plant are the restricted area of the site and the difficulty in delivering equipment to the site. The new 40 MWe plant is being erected on the site of an old power plant, which is relatively small for the new plant.

The second major challenge came in planning the delivery of the new equipment to the site. The plant is some 300 km from a port, with a great difference in altitude and access up very steep, narrow roads with a large number of inadequate bridges. So the decision was taken to transport the engines using the largest heavy-lift aircraft in the world to the Antananarivo airport from where they can be readily transported by road to the site. They are the largest and heaviest Wärtsilä engines that have ever been transported by air, and will require seven flights.

Nous venons de vivre  la journée des rencontres interculturelles de
l’École Malgache le 07 octobre dernier.  La Semaine Québécoise des
Rencontres Interculturelles du Ministère de l'Immigration et des Communautés
Culturelles. en était à sa quatrième édition au Québec et l'École Malgache,
sous son patronage, en était à sa troisième.

Cette journée à multiples facettes a été un franc succès grâce à la présence
de tous les invités d'honneur: l’Ambassadeur de Madagascar, le Consul
de Madagascar au Québec, les représentants de la ville de Montréal, des
organismes et la vôtre.

Tous et  chacun ont mis la main à la pâte. Merci à ceux et celles qui ont
collaboré de près ou de loin; merci à ceux et à celles qui ont travaillé aux
ateliers dans la grande salle, qui ont pris part aux conférences; merci à
ceux et à celles qui étaient dans les coulisses, à l'accueil, aux photos, au

En février 2006, Enjeux présentait Mathieu et Philippe Razanakolona, deux Québécois d’origine malgache, qui rêvaient de venir en aide à Madagascar, le pays de leur père, en participant aux Jeux olympiques de Turin. Après leur aventure olympique, les frères Razanakolona se sont envolés vers Madagascar pour mener leur projet humanitaire. Selon-vous, ont-ils réussi à surmonter les nombreux obstacles qui se sont dressés devant eux? Journaliste : Alain Gravel. Réalisateur : Georges Amar.

Donc hier, à l'émission Enjeux sur Radio-Canada, ont été présenté, en 30 min
à peu près, les Razanakolona et leur projet Ski Madagascar, avec en plus, et
surtout, leur contribution pour Mada.

Voici les points que j'ai retenus. À part les moments du J.O. :

1- après un petit retour sur les origines et la vie du paternel dans les
ruelles de Tana, il est raconté que l'idée de "faire quelque chose pour
Mada" était née lors de la visite des deux frères dans l'île en 93, oU ils
ont vu la grosse différence ou contraste entre leur vie, ou plus
généralement celle des occidentaux, et celle des Malagasy;

2- il fût une séquence, moins d'une minute, oU l'on montre ce pays, "l'un
des plus pauvres de la terre", avec des enfants en haillons, dormant ou
quémandant dans les rues, et encore dans un champ d'ordures. Alors que,
avant ça, ils ont montré que de premier abord, la verdure et fertilité des
champs semblent pointer vers une certaine prospérité. Et que plus tard, ils
ont aussi montré la richesse criarde de, justement, un parent des Raz (c'est
celui-ci, un sénateur, qui a poussé le projet auprès des autorités);

3- il fût montré la chaleur de l'accueil des Malagasy et leur support à
Matthieu (et au projet), et aussi, l'esprit festif de la famille; il fût
aussi montré le support du public, tant à Turin qu'au Canada, du projet, et
aussi, quand les Raz font le tour de quelques écoles québecquois. L'un des
objectifs, celui de donner une belle visibilité à Mada, est bien atteint;

4- "l'idéal" des Raz a reçu très bonne impression auprès de Water Aid, un
organisme British, qui a alors contacté et travaillé avec les Canadiens,
l'ACDI, pour faire avancer ce projet d'eau potable pour Mada; et que malgré
tout, un peu plus du tiers du montant ciblé a pu être levé (~$130,000);

5- il fût montré que les journalistes et officiels de Mada ne sont pas très
chauds du projet, les premiers disant qu'une Fédération (de ski) ne saurait
être née que de par la base, mais que l'idée a fini par aboutir;

6- Et le clou de l'émission, si un peu avant, catché par les caméra de
Radio-Canada, Mamy Rakotoarivelo, président du Comité Olympique Malagasy a
promis de virer aux Raz l'argent qui a été confié au CO Malagasy par le
Comité International Olympique, argent devant être dédié à la préparation
des athlètes, à date, il n'en est rien !

Bangladeshi microcredit pioneer Muhammad Yunus win Nobel Peace Prize

OSLO, Norway (AP) - Bangladeshi microcredit pioneer Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for their work in advancing economic and social opportunities for the poor, particularly women.

The economist and the bank he founded will share the prize. They were cited for their efforts to help "create economic and social development from below" in their home country by using innovative economic programs such as microcredit lending.

Grameen Bank has been instrumental in helping millions of poor Bangladeshis, many of them women, improve their standard of living by letting them borrow small sums to start businesses.

Loans go toward buying items such as cows to start a dairy, chickens for an egg business, or mobile phones to start businesses where villagers who have no access to phones pay a small fee to make calls.

"Every single individual on earth has both the potential and the right to live a decent life. Across cultures and civilizations, Yunus and Grameen Bank have shown that even the poorest of the poor can work to bring about their own development," the Nobel Committee said in its citation.

Reached by the Nobel foundation, Yunus was excited about winning the prize.

"I'm absolutely delighted. I cannot believe that it has really happened," he said by telephone. "Everyone was telling me that I would get the prize but it came as a surprise. It is fantastic news for the people that have supported us."

Yunus has drawn praise for advancing microcredit, which has been credited with helping poor women to advance their lives and pull them out of poverty.

Microcredit is the extension of small loans, typically US$50 to US$100, to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans.

Ole Danbolt Mjoes, chairman of the committee, told The Associated Press that Yunus' efforts have had visible results.

"We are saying microcredit is an important contribution that cannot fix everything, but is a big help," Mjoes said, adding that Yunus is a "smart guy. He is creative. His head is in the right place."

Mjoes recounted that Yunus himself lent US$27, divided among 42 people, in 1976, to help them buy weaving stools.

"Then they got the weaving stools quickly, they started to weave quickly and they repaid him quickly," he said.

In its citation, the committee noted that "economic growth and political democracy can not achieve their full potential unless the female half of humanity participates on an equal footing with the male," the committee said.

Grameen Bank, which was founded by Yunus, provides credit to "the poorest of the poor" in rural Bangladesh, without any collateral, according to its website.

"At GB, credit is a cost effective weapon to fight poverty and it serves as a catalyst in the overall development of socio-economic conditions of the poor who have been kept outside the banking orbit on the ground that they are poor and hence not bankable," the committee said.

The bank claims to have 6.6 million borrowers, 97 per cent of whom are women, and provides services in more than 70,000 villages in Bangladesh.

Yunus and the bank will share in the US$1.4 million prize as well as a gold medal and diploma.

The announcement that Yunus and the bank had won was a surprise to many pundits and oddsmakers.

Late speculation on the prize had settled comfortably upon former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari for brokering an August 2005 peace deal with Indonesia's government and Aceh separatists.

Other contenders, at least in the public domain, included Chinese dissident Rebiya Kadeer who has fought for the rights of Uighur Muslims in China and Chechen lawyer Lydia Yusupova.

The five-member awards committee never says who is being considered only offering up the number of nominees it has received. This year, 191 nominations were received.

But the decision was in line with the committee's goal of encouraging ongoing processes or human rights efforts rather than rewarding completed ones like Aceh or Cambodia.

The peace prize was the sixth and last Nobel prize announced this year. The others, for physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and economics, were announced in Stockholm, Sweden.
