Our Lady of the Angels Regional Spiritual Assistant
                                                          December, 2010

Dear Sisters and Brothers in St. Francis,

During this Season of Advent, as the Church begins her new year, I wish you blessings as you prepare for the Saviour’s birth. May your hearts be filled with the light, joy and desire of His coming.

The challenge during this Advent waiting time is that we are to become more Christ-like preparing ourselves like our Blessed Lady, Joseph and Francis did for the coming of the Christ child into our world. It may be a question of preparing ourselves, starting with the secular and working towards the spiritual. First of all, turn off the TV and turn off the radio. Allow some silence to enter into your homes and into your hearts. Let Advent be Advent and celebrate Christmas during Christmas. Simplify the way you celebrate Christmas and prepare it that way so that you do not have to spend hours and days in malls and department stores in the midst of the chaos and crowds, but prepare spiritually for Christmas. Imagine the amount of time you would spend in prayer if you did not watch TV and listen to the radio and go shopping as much.

The instruction of the Church is to make this a holy season of penance and preparation. It is to have a subdued attitude during this time, because if our Lord were to come into the world today with all its chaos, the same thing that happened two thousand years ago would happen again. We would miss Him. We would not be prepared and we wold not recognize Him.  But if we are taking time to pray, if we are frequenting the Sacraments, if we are trying to develop spiritual life and grow in virtue, then our hearts are to be focused on Christ — not on gifts, not on the lights on the house or front yard, not on party time. Our focus will be on Jesus, the real Light.  So as we begin the New Year keep your heart fixed on Him so that when he speaks you will hear Him. And you will be prepared in the most perfect way by a heart filled with love to receive the true coming of Jesus Christ at Christmas.

May the quiet peace and gentle love of the first Christmas be yours this holy Season with God’s endless blessings in the New Year.

                    Fraternally,

                     Friar Louis Geelan, O.F.M.

Questions for personal reflection and group discussion:

1.      In what ways can I celebrate and welcome God’s loving presence and gifts in my life?

2.      How does Advent draw me closer to the presence and light of the Lord?

May the real meaning of this holy season, the birth of God’s Son, bring joy to your Christmas and illuminate the coming year.

Paix et joie,

Our Lady of the Angels Regional Spiritual Assistant

February, 2011

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

The excitement of Christmas season has passed, and now the concern of year end bills, income tax, and work schedule is before us … this year’s commitments are marked are on our calendars. It has occurred to me just how many feasts or solemnities we just celebrated. Christmas time gives us an abundance of opportunities to reflect on all facets of our Franciscan life. We have only to raise our minds above the ‘happy holiday’ mind-set into the spiritual realm of things, and there is a richness to revel in.

There is the birth of Christ — the simple birth of a child reaching out to young and old, to rich and poor. God opened a whole new outlook and lifestyle, for us to clothe ourselves with. Through the birth of a child, God made us a new and special people. He raised us up to Himself. The feast of the Holy Innocents also played out a scenario for us that continues to happen over and over again. It is found worldwide, in the poverty of children, the victims of was, and the arrogant way we treat our unborn. Are we truly concerned or do we pay lip service only?

Mary, Mother of God, brings to mind the whole spectrum of motherhood. No life is complete without a sensitive, gentle, nurturing, guiding and calming hand of a mother. Do we really appreciate this? What more important event for us as Seculars, than the Epiphany and revelation of the Lord? God in His eminence and His humility opened His Kingdom to all people. By this one act of God, we are all enrolled in the scrolls of eternity. The baptism of the Lord marks the divinity of Jesus. The Son of the most-high- God did not need cleansing from original sin, but we do. By this one act of modelship and unity with us, the Son of God Himself brought us into His family. This is but a thumbnail sketch of what an awesome period of spiritual enrichment Christmas can be for all of us. Let us then, raise ourselves above the stress if “happy holidays”! It is a matter of raising ourselves above the concerns and stress of holiday bills and the burden of income tax! It is a time for our spirit to enjoy a while the Blessings of Christmas!

 Fraternally,

Friar Louis Geelan, O.F.M.

Questions for personal reflection and group discussion:

1. What are the means by which my Franciscan example can serve to evangelize my fraternity and community?

2. How do the readings at Sunday and daily Mass help me to discern what God     wants of me?

Here I am Lord, I have come to do your will.

NCPD Releases Statement On Tucson Tragedy

The NCPD Council on Mental Illness has released a statement on the tragic January 8 shootings in Tucson, AZ. To read the full statement click here.  We encourage you to share this statement with your diocesan newspaper and other press contacts.  See more in the NCPD News and Notes section.

Sargent Shriver, Devout Catholic Activist dies at 95
special_olympics_logoAt the first White Mass to celebrate the gifts of people with disabilities in the Archdiocese of Washington this past November, Sargent Shriver and the Kennedy family, longtime members of the Archdiocese, were honored for their service and leadership in initiatives of support for people with disabilities. Shriver, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease in the latter years of his amazing life, attended daily Mass until his death on January 18, 2011.

It was my honor* to have a few private minutes with Mr. Shriver at the reception following that White Mass in November.  I wanted to speak with him to extend my appreciation for his leadership in the founding and operation of such prominent institutions as Special Olympics and the Peace Corps, and to tell him directly what an inspiration and challenging model of leadership he had been for me and so many other lay Catholics.  I treasure the memory of those tender moments that we shared together.

PeaceCorpsLogoMy mother died of Alzheimer’s, too, and something else I recall from that day and from other examples I read or heard about is the loving and very respectful way his family treated Sargent Shriver as he experienced the limitations consistent with advancing Alzheimers.  His daughter, Maria Shriver, wrote a book for her children and his other young grandchildren to explain the changes that were occurring in their grandfather.  What a truly pro-life message that family model communicates, that all life is precious and to be cherished.

We thank God for the life of Sargent Shriver and extend our prayers to his family in their loss.  May he and his wife, Eunice, rest in peace.

NCPD Autism Task Force Survey
The Autism Survey prepared by the NCPD Autism Task Force (ATF) closed for new input on January 31.  Thanks to the wonderful support you provided, we collected more data than we had thought possible.  Many diocesan directors forwarded the SurveyMonkey link to their parishes so we were able to collect high quality information from the diocesan, parish and parental perspectives.

ATF at WorkThe 476 responses came from 33 states.  Respondents included 67 diocesan staff, 245 parish staff, 55 catechists, 47 parents and 62 others.  The ATF is now working with the data and will share conclusions on the NCPD website when finished.  It will be part of the discussion at NCPD’s Roundtable at the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership Conference in May.  Diocesan reports are being constructed from data collected and will be sent to diocesan directors who requested them.

Please be patient as the ATF works to compile and process the work.
NCPD Co-Sponsors Annual Catholic Social Ministry Gathering
CSMG_LogoEach February, NCPD joins with eleven other national Catholic organizations and five departments of the United States Conference of Catholic bishops to cosponsor the annual Catholic Social Ministry Gathering (CSMG) in Washington, DC.   This meeting brings together social justice and prolife leaders from throughout the United States to learn about current domestic and international issues of human life and dignity, and justice and peace. It also provides an opportunity to bring our concerns to our elected officials on Capitol Hill.  The meeting this year is February 13-16.  For more information on CSMG click here.

Join us for NCPD’s pre-gathering meeting on Sunday, February 13 from  1:00 – 2:30 pm ET.

NCPD Statement on Tucson Tragedy

An article released by the Catholic News Service (CNS) quoted the Mental Illness Council statement in an article which began, “'The entire faith community is responsible, as individuals and collectively, for addressing the nation's mental health crisis that contributed to the tragedy in Tucson, Ariz.,' a Catholic organization said Jan. 26. The Council on Mental Illness of the National Catholic Partnership on Disability said an underfunded mental health system and the 'stigmatization, stereotyping and isolation from society' experienced by those who are mentally ill and their families were factors in the Jan. 8 shootings outside a Safeway grocery store in Tucson. Jared Lee Loughner, 22, is charged with killing six people and wounding 13, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., in the incident.”  To see their full article click below.

An article by Jerry Filteau in the National Catholic Reporter also focused on the Statement, noting that It urged people to educate themselves on the causes and treatment available for those with mental illness and advocate for better services for them.  The article quoted from the Statement  the following directive, “Welcome and value people with mental illness and their families into our parish life and help them overcome the isolation they often feel.”  Click here to read the full article.

Thank you, Kristen, for the NCPD newsletter.
I had no idea this existed. I'm blind and have Anxiety, PTSD and
Depression. I'm going to contact them on Monday.
One of the things that made me feel close to Francis is that he was blind
at the end of his life and still did all he could for the Lord.
E-mail with we, if you like and that includes any disabled SFO member.

REGIONAL SPIRITUAL ASSISTANT

Our Lady of the Angels Region

March, 2011

Dear Sisters and Brothers in St. Francis and Clare,

The Season of Lent is fast upon us as an invitation to enter into a deepening of our understanding and celebration of the Paschal mystery in our lives and hearts as it was for Francis and those who follow in his steps.

The purpose of each Lenten Season is twofold:

First, it is an opportunity for us to renew and relive our Baptism that is the celebration of First Conversion. It is good to reflect on the meaning of “a man or woman born through water and the Spirit” (Jn 3:5). In our human experience, water gives and sustains life; in our Faith journey, the Holy Spirit enlivens, strengthens, empowers and fills us with enthusiasm. With greater fervour, let us recommit ourselves to live our Baptismal Promises.

What is our response to these questions? “Do we reject Satan and all his works and all his empty Promises?”  Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth?” “Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?”  “Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?” “This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Secondly, Lent is an opportunity to celebrate Forgiveness and Reconciliation, which is the ongoing process of Second Conversion. We praise God for His faithfulness, love, mercy, and forgiveness. He is eternally true to us, despite sins and failings, always extending the invitation to grow.  We are asked that where there is dissention, friction or animosity amongst people that through the POWER OF CHRIST reconciliation can be realized. This demands much prayer, fasting, alms-giving  (the scriptural penitential forms Matt 6). It is through penitential forms such as these that we can recognize the Lord and His will for us.

Our life’s journey brings us through suffering, anxiety, and death to the glory and presence of the Risen Christ. We too must follow the same path if we are to live life to the fullest both in this world and in Heaven.

“Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, he who in his great mercy gave us new birth; a birth unto hope which draws its life from the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead; a birth to an imperishable inheritance, incapable of fading or defilement, which is kept in heaven for you … a birth to salvation which stands ready to be revealed in the last days.”    1 Peter 1, 3 ff.

    Fraternally,

        Friar Louis Geelan, O.F.M.

Questions for personal reflection and/or group discussion

1.      In what ways can I give witness to my Franciscan calling this Lent?

2.       What are the ways in which I can faithfully keep the “form of life” I have promised?

Paix et joie,

Our Lady of the Angels Regional
                                                Spiritual Assistant

Dear Sisters and Brothers,               May ~ June, 2011

The rejoicing and shining hope of this Easter and Pentecost season challenges all Christians and followers of Francis and Clare to share the Gospel message — to make known to people, cultures and nations God’s outpouring of mercy, presence and forgiveness. Through Baptism, God invites us to share the gift of our lives in service to others. To do so we must be aware of our daily encounters with the gifts of God’s infinite love and our humble service to Him and our brothers and sisters in the spirit of Francis.  May we be strengthened against evil that we may rejoice in God’s peace and trust in His eternal promise. Those who welcome and cherish the Word as guest of their hearts will have abiding joy. “Thank God for all the blessings he has bestowed on you so that you may be worthy to receive greater ones.”              St Louis 1X
“May you attain full knowledge of God’s will through perfect wisdom and   spiritual insight. Then you will lead a life worthy of the Lord and pleasing to Him in every way. You will multiply good works of every sort and grow in knowledge of God. By the might of His glory you will be endowed with the strength needed to stand fast, even to endure joyfully whatever may come.”
                                                                       Col. 1, 9b-11
Francis’ Office of the Passion speaks to us: “Holy Virgin Mary, there is no one like you among women. Daughter and handmaid of the Most High Supreme King and Father in heaven, mother of our Most Holy Lord Jesus Christ, spouse of the Holy Spirit pray for us.”
Fraternally,
Friar Louis Geelan, O.F.M.

Questions for personal reflection and group discussion:
1.      What have I honestly done for Christ during my Franciscan life’s journey? Can our Christian heritage be expressed in a variety of ways?
2.      How is the Holy Spirit inspiring me to serve the risen Christ now in this period of my life?

There are two things to do about the Gospel — believe it and behave it.
                 S. Wesley

If you only knew the challenges of your child grappling with many grown- up problems...
If you only knew the tears of your child when sense of rejection seems to
