McIntyre & Moore Booksellers
presents
"poetry in stories and stories in poetry"
with
Anna M. Warrock and Ben Brooks

Wednesday, April 27, 7:30pm

(Somerville, MA) McIntyre & Moore Booksellers presents "poetry in stories and stories in poetry" with award-winning writers Anna M. Warrock and Ben Brooks on Wednesday, April 27, 7:30 pm at McIntyre & Moore Booksellers, 255 Elm St. in Davis Square, Somerville, near the Red Line. Free and open to all, with a reception following; wheelchair accessible. For information call McIntyre & Moore Booksellers (617) 629-4840 or log onto www.mcintyreandmoore.com.

For award-winning fiction writer Ben Brooks and poet Anna M. Warrock, both Somerville residents, the words shape a story's details with shared lyric intensity, but by the distinct paths of short story and poem. Audiences have the opportunity to travel both paths with Brooks and Warrock, who have read together in various venues.

Ben Brooks won a Nelson Algren Award in 2000 for his story "Reptiles Take Over the World," and Third Prize Story in the 1982 O. Henry Prize Stories anthology with "A Postal Creed." He has published a novel, The Icebox, and over seventy short stories in literary magazines, such as Sewanee Review, Chicago Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, Story Quarterly, Denver Quarterly, and several others. He has been awarded a number of grants, including a two-year fellowship from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Arizona Arts Commission, the Ingram Merrill Foundation, Ucross, Centrum, Blue Mountain Center, and elsewhere. Currently he teaches fiction writing and literature in the MFA program at Emerson College in Boston.

Anna M. Warrock’s books include the anthology Kiss Me Goodnight, Poems and Stories by Women Who Were Girls When Their Mothers Died, published in 2005 by Syren Books, and the chapbooks Horizon and Smoke and Stone. The poem “Remembering My Mother’s Face” is permanently installed in the Davis Square MBTA subway station. Her poetry has appeared in a number of literary magazines, including The Harvard Review, The Madison Review, Mind’s Eye, Wild Earth, and Phoebe. She has received three literature fellowships from the Somerville Arts Council and the Robert Penn Warren Award from The Cumberland Poetry Review, and her poetry has been set to music and performed by the Boston-based contemporary chamber music ensemble Row Twelve and by composer Wes York, and was part of a planetarium show at the Museum of Science.

I am a recently retired teacher living in Somerville. I am interested
in working part-time (up to 15 hours a week) as a jeweler's
apprentice. I have a little experience working with tools - have taken
3 adult-ed silversmith classes - but wish to become more proficient,
with help from someone more skilled. I would consider working without
pay in return for this experience. If you need help OR have any ideas
for me as to how to find a position, please respond.

Thanks,
Anita

Celebrate at WSAC April 29 before Somerville Open Studios

The Washington Street Art Center hosts an evening of music, poetry and
art to celebrate Somerville Open Studios on Friday, April 29, 7:00 to
10:00 pm, at the WSAC Gallery, 321 Washington St., Somerville.

The evening features the Minimalist Orchestra, at the intersection of dj
sampling and live performance with percussion and vocals; poet Anna M.
Warrock; and singer-songwriter Ari. The WSAC Gallery hosts a diverse
group show by over a dozen artists: imaginary landscape oil painting,
encaustic, hand-painted silks, found object sculpture, mosaic plants and
fish, poetry, jewelry, record crafts, photography, and layered,
nostalgic art. WSAC's artists' studios will also be open during SOS.
Free and ample parking.

The evening begins with a reading by award-winning poet Anna M. Warrock
at 7:30 pm. Warrock's recent work has been described as "an accomplished
collection that should be a handbook for how to write poetry . . . she
puts to words what we feel, what we fail to articulate, the thing that
wakes us up at 3 A.M. in a cold sweat."

The evening includes music by singer-songwriter Ari (www.acoustichic.com)
from 8:00 to 9:00 pm. Ari's music has been described by the Weekly Dig as
"the essence of inspiring, intelligent folk music."

The event concludes with the Minimalist Orchestra from 9:00 to 10:00 pm,
at the intersection of dj and live performance. Scooter Vineburgh plays
and samples Latin, trip-hop, tribal and reggae beats; Kerry Gunn drops
live chill-out vocals; and vis_ed projects evolving, synchronized
images. M.O. plays music to relax your mind, think positive, and travel
new audible lands. Their unique blend of electronic samplings and
ethereal live vocals meld seamlessly into the physical environment,
providing total sensory fulfillment.

WSAC will be open to the public during SOS with over 300 artists around
the city, April 30 and May 1, noon-6 pm; listed as site #84 on the
Somerville Open Studios map, and at www.somervilleopenstudios.org.

The WSAC gallery is also open weekly on Saturdays (May 7, 14, 21 and
28), noon-4 pm, or call (617) 623-5315 for an appointment.

The Washington Street Art Center at 321 Washington Street is between
Union Square and Beacon Street: a five-minute walk from Union Square and
a ten-minute walk from Harvard Square (two blocks from Beacon Street).
Accessible on the #86 bus. Parking is free and ample.

For more information, call (617) 623-5315 or visit

"Terrain Vague" at Nave Gallery
Explores No-Man¹s Land of New Photography

From April 7 May 14, the Nave Gallery in Somerville presents "Terrain
Vague: New Photography in No-Man¹s Land." The opening reception is Thursday,
April 7, from 6-8. Gallery hours are Thurs 4-8 and Sat 1-5. For more
information, contact (617) 625-4823. The Nave Gallery is located at the
Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church, 155 Powder-house Blvd., Somerville.

"Terrain Vague" showcases the work of six Boston-area photographers who
blend different media with photography. Their processes occupy an obscure
territory, which often lends a rich ambiguity to the content as well.

- Gary Duehr creates collages of urban nightscapes through the use of
repeated scanning and printmaking techniques.
- Robert Goss photographs images from newspapers, books and magazines, then
adds further alterations including drawing, painting, and text.
- Kathy A. Halamka confronts the stability of family memories with heat,
water, abrasion, carbon toner transfers, and charcoal on birch plywood.
- Jeffrey Heyne blends distorted images of Barbie dolls with colored resin
in the shape of O-rings to explore cultural meanings.
- Gabrielle Keller incorporates street photography, diary jottings and art
history images in her digital collages.
- Jennifer Munson combines painting and photography to mark the remains of
her travel experiences.

residents working towards the creation of an arts and cultural center in

Hi everyone,

This Sunday from 3pm to 5pm is the opening reception for "The Dictionary Project", now at the gallery at Brickbottom, Somerville.
The show is an exhibit of artists' inspirations derived from pages of an old (1957) dictionary found in the trash by the show curator, Annie Silverman.  The pages were distributed to artists around the country and the world.  I know I am biased but really, this show is wonderful!!!  You will be amazed at the range of interpretations of each page.

If you cannot make the opening then the show runs from April 7 to May 1, 2005, 12pm to 6pm.  Artist evening is Friday May 6, 2005.

Hi,

I have a box of used velvet jewelry displays. A bunch of necks (not the
stand up kind), small square pedastals, some flat pieces and a ton of
earring stands (20-30). They are used, but in pretty good condition. New
they were probably worth several hundred dollars. I'm asking $50 for the
whole lot. If you are interested, they can be seen at my house (in
Somerville) or my studio (in Cambridge).

thanks,

If you care about anything that depends on state funding:

schools
transportation
arts
human services
public safety...

come and learn about the state budget crisis, and what we can do about it.
It would be great if you could print the attached leaflet and invite others.

State Representatives Patricia Jehlen,
Timothy Toomey & Carl Sciortino invite you to

Massachusetts State Budget:
The Crisis Continues

Tuesday, April 12
7:30-9:00pm
Visiting Nurse's Association (VNA)
259 Lowell Street

Speakers:

Noah Berger, Executive Director, Mass Budget and Policy Center
Harris Gruman, Executive Director, Neighbor to Neighbor Massachusetts

YOU can tell about how the budget crisis has affected people you know, and
talk about solutions.

A FEW EXAMPLES:
- Since 2003, Somerville's local aid has been cut by $10 million.
- From 2002-04, Massachusetts cut per pupil funding for public education
more than any other state.
- Public health funding is down 24%. As a result, half of all detox beds
have been closed.

Somerville-based performing arts group Akhra: the Dancing Grounds,
presents Hands: Rhythm Project, a multi-disciplinary performance piece
bringing together musicians from Japan and India and dancers from the
US and co-directed by composer Nandlal Nayak and choreographer Wendy
Jehlen.

Nandlal Nayak is a composer of Contemporary World Music, born and
raised in Jharkhand, India. He is a member of the Ghasi tribe and grew
up surrounded by the rich musical tradition of this people. Since
1996, he has been working and composing with musicians and dancers of
many traditions in the US, Europe, Japan and his native India. (Please
see full bio.)

Wendy Jehlen is a choreographer of Contemporary dance whose work is
rooted in her life-long training in Bharata Natyam, South Indian
classical dance, as well as in Capoeira, West African dance, Japanese
Butoh and Modern and Contemporary dance styles which she has studied in
the US, Italy and Japan. She also draws on her work with Deaf artists,
using American Sign Language poetry and the principles of that art form
in much of her choreography. Jehlen is a 2005 Artist Fellowship
recipient from the Somerville Arts Council.

In this project, Nayak and Jehlen will be joined by
internationally-acclaimed musicians from Japan as well as members of
Jehlen’s Boston-based Contemporary dance company.

The performance will include folktales, poetry and other texts from
Japan, India and the West. These texts will be spoken, sung, signed
(in American Sign Language) and danced, juxtaposing ideas and images
from these three traditions.
Some of the texts include:
• an invocation song to Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed god of
beginnings, journeys and thresholds from the Chhau mask dance tradition
of West Bengal;
• a Japanese folktale about a young girl who becomes a dragon;
• a song in the Nagpuri language about the creation of the five
elements that make up the universe;
• and a piece on the creation of rhythm, juxtaposing the “butterfly
effect” from chaos theory and the story from South India of the
creation of dance and music by Lord Shiva in the form of Natraj.

Hands was commissioned by the Seattle International Children’s Festival
and received a creativity grant from the National Endowment for the
Arts. It was supported in its initial stages by grants from the Tokyo
American Center, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Japan-US
Friendship Commission and the International House of Japan. Additional
funding has come from the Somerville Arts Council and the Massachusetts
Cultural Council.

The Washington Street Art Center hosts an evening of music, poetry and
art to celebrate Somerville Open Studios on Friday, April 29, 7:00 to
10:00pm, at the WSAC Gallery, 321 Washington St., Somerville.

Warrock
at 7:30pm. Warrock's recent work has been described as "an accomplished
collection that should be a handbook for how to write poetry . . . she
puts to words what we feel, what we fail to articulate, the thing that
wakes us up at 3A.M. in a cold sweat."

The evening includes music by singer-songwriter Ari (www.acoustichic.com)
from 8:00 to 9:00pm. Ari's music has been described by the Weekly Dig as
"the essence of inspiring, intelligent folk music."

The event concludes with the Minimalist Orchestra from 9:00 to 10:00pm,
at the intersection of dj and live performance. Scooter Vineburgh plays
and samples Latin, trip-hop, tribal and reggae beats; Kerry Gunn drops
live chill-out vocals; and vis_ed projects evolving, synchronized
images. M.O. plays music to relax your mind, think positive, and travel
new audible lands. Their unique blend of electronic samplings and
ethereal live vocals meld seamlessly into the physical environment,
providing total sensory fulfillment.

WSAC will be open to the public during SOS with over 300 artists around
the city, April 30 and May 1, noon-6pm; listed as site #84 on the
Somerville Open Studios map, and at www.somervilleopenstudios.org.

The WSAC gallery is also open weekly on Saturdays (May 7, 14, 21 and
28), noon-4pm, or call (617) 623-5315 for an appointment.

The Washington Street Art Center at 321 Washington Street is between
Union Square and Beacon Street: a five-minute walk from Union Square and
a ten-minute walk from Harvard Square (two blocks from Beacon Street).
Accessible on the #86 bus. Parking is free and ample.

Hi,

I hope you can catch this show at the Lillian Immig Gallery at Emmanuel
College in Boston.

It runs April 6 - May 21, and the opening is Wed, April 20, 5-7:30, with a
gallery talk earlier that day at 3:30.

Immig Gallery is located at 400 The Fenway. Hours are Mon - Sat, 10-4. For
directions go to www.emmanuel.edu, or call 617-735-9992. The show is
presented in conjunction with Boston Cyberarts Festival,
www.bostoncyberarts.org.

Featuring work by David Davison, Gary Duehr, Theresa Monaco and Gustavo
Soto-Rusa, "Memory Streams" looks at how artists combine digital processes
with issues of memory.

Attached is an image from Gary Duehr's Terra Nova series: "Topeka, Kansas
#1," pigment on vinyl, 36" x 36", 2005. These photographs, derived from
publicly available satellite pictures on the Internet, demonstrate a kind of
extreme voyeurism. Tinted sepia, with pixels creating an impressionistic
feel, the images balance nostalgia against scientific survey.

P.S. I also hope you take a look at "The Dictionary Project" at Brickbottom
Gallery, in which I have a piece, "Precis," of repeatedly scanned dictionary
pages coated with encaustic. "The Dictionary Project" includes work by 50
artists who have worked on--and been inspired by--pages from a 1957 edition.

It runs April 7 - May 1, and hours are Thurs - Sat 12 -5. Brickbottom
Gallery is located at 1 Fitchburg Street in Somerville. For directions go to
www.brickbottomartists.com or call 617-776-3410.
