A list for all persons with an interest in the Antarctic & Subantarctic, but from a South African perspective. Its primary purposes are to serve as a medium for disseminating information to the South African community of Antarcticans & Islanders, and to help people from this community to keep in touch with one another.
Our aim is to be inclusive rather than exclusive. The list is intended for all who have an interest in and/or some experience of Antarctica and the Subantarctic. I.e. not only those who have been to SANAE, Marion & Gough, but also those who have been to other parts of Antarctica or other Subantarctic Islands, those who have supported/do support people going south, or simply all who have a passion for the isolated islands & frozen continent of the Southern Ocean. Therefore, please feel free to invite others who may be interested to join the list.
The name of the list
While “South” denotes the area of interest with respect to us here in South Africa, it is also an allusion to the book of that name by Ernest Shackleton. It therefore has connotations of adventure, lonely wild places, blizzards, the roaring forties, seals & penguins etc – reasons why many of us headed south in the first place! The suffix SA is just to indicate South Africa.
