Subject: Improving your listening skills. A comment.

Hi

Many students ask me how can I help them to improve their listening
skills.

They're a little disappointed that it is not something that can be
fixed in one lesson!

Improving listening skills takes time. Months and years in some cases.

Here are the fastest ways to do it.

1. Listen to English Language radio or watch English Language TV for
5 - 10 minutes a day.

Focus on it during those 5 to 10 minutes and don't be upset if you
can't understand every word. This comes with time.

If you can concentrate for more than 5-10 minutes a day, do it.
You'll improve faster. A lot of students can't do this though because
it is too stressful, so don't worry if you can't either.

Imagine you're on a noisy train talking to someone in your own
language but only catching a few words. You still understand the
meaning of what is being said, right? The same goes for English.
You'll pick up the rest of the vocabulary as you go.

It would be great if you could have the TV or radio on in the
background constantly so that your subconscious mind picks up some
English words too. But you don't have to listen to it and focus and
concentrate all day as even native English speakers would be sent mad
doing this!

2. Another way of increasing your listening skills is to read out
loud to an English speaker and have them correct your pronunciation.
By reading and hearing the sound of the words, and the flow of the
sentence, your brain can connect the two making it easier to listen
and understand.

You can find some references on the Speakoz site at:
http://www.speakoz.com/english-learning-sound.html
and
http://www.speakoz.com/english-directory/audio-video.html

Next time I'll talking about word stress.

Cheers

Hi,
For me, if I didn't enjoy my trip much I would say
"I went to London..."
On the other hand if I still feel the trip was so great then I would say "
I've been to London..."
Let's see other comments

Hi

If you haven't visited Andy's site at http://www.twinguide.com I'd
recommend it. Twinguide offers online English language courses for a
small fee. If you can't find a teacher in your area and want to speak
to someone online, this is a great way of doing it. You'll need a
microphone and speakers and the sound quality is pretty good.

Andy's given me the ability to run a few classes at Twinguide. So if
enough people are interested in having a gander or a Captain Cook at
a lesson about Aussie slang and idioms, I'd be in like Flynn,
eyeballs peeled, ear to the ground and nose to the grindstone, ready
to start a shindig!

And if you're already on Twinguide, please post your opinion to the
list.

Many people are a bit embarrassed to talk online with other people
listening in a classroom situation. For those people I'd recommend
the online video course at English College TV -
http://www.englishcollegetv.com It is for beginners but features
printable lessons, a multimedia black board and a video student and
teacher to speak and enunciate English for you. Lots of fun!

Hope this helps and hope everyone has a great New Year.

Cheers

James

I am looking for such a group formed by volunteers (ideally with
native english speakers as mentors) that would organize
regular/irregular meetings for members (who usually are non-native
English speakers) to exchange and improve their proficiency of spoken
English. On the other hand, the mentors would also have a chance to
learn Cantonese/Mandarin.

Any serious advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.
