I have a question, does anyone know if there is a way to preserve an ultra sound picture.  I am not sure how to answer that question to our patron and thought someone out there might have had the same question before.

Dear Patricia,

I did a little research on-line and found three ways to save Ultra Sound Pictures, and then adjusted the suggestions:

1. Request a digital copy of the ultrasound from the doctor. The ultrasound can be saved onto a thumb drive, or firewire drive which can be uploaded onto your computer. Remember that firewire drives can fail over time, so remember to think of LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe).

2. Scan the hard-copy ultrasound image into your computer, or can print onto acid-free unbuffered paper for preservation.

3. Encapsulate the hard copy, this is better than laminating the hard copy since the ultra sound can be removed in necessary.

I hope this information helps.

Best Wishes and Congratulations to the Parents,

Lance

We are going to trying something a little different this year for the upcoming SRMA elections.  The Nominations Committee created an online ballot for voting (using the Survey Monkey tool).  Each member will receive an e-mail from me with a link to the online ballot.  If you have any trouble with the ballot, or if you would prefer to vote using traditional methods, please contact me.

Please look for the Survey Monkey ballot coming your way in the next few days.

Nancy,

I suggest one of two Zoom recorders: Zoom H2 or H2n. I've used the H2, and it's also used (on occasion) by the Maria Rogers Oral History Program at Boulder's Carnegie Library. The H2n is an updated recorder that has received good reviews through social media. Seems like the H2n has a simplified appearance and utility while upgrading some functionality -- all good! H2n is a bit more expensive, at $180, and you'd want to purchase the accessory pack, additional $40.

Here's a link to transom.org's H2 review: http://transom.org/?p=1999

Followed by two links that talk about H2n in comparison to the H2:

For what it's worth, I intend to purchase the H2n -- good quality and simple operation.

Cyns.

Nancy,

We have had very good luck with the Olympus VN-8100PC.  It is small, easy to use and can be purchased at any office supply store for around $50.00.  It records in MP3 format so no conversion is necessary.  It also comes with a small cable that you can plug into a usb port on your computer.  I know there are models out there that you can plug directly into your computer; however, the one we tried, we had to convert the audio recording into MP3 format and I was not happy about that.

The Olympus model is easy to operate: slide the on button on the side, press the red record button and you are ready to go.  It uses AAA batteries and can record 100s of hours.

I took it out in the field last year at a dig and captured oral histories while volunteers were digging the T-Rex and it was wonderful.  (Still have to watch out for wind noise in Wyoming ~).

It also comes with a neoprene case that is nice to set the recorder on during an interview if you have an overzealous subject who likes to emphasize his points using the table.

Hope this helps,

Teri

If I were buying a new digital audio recorder right now I would get the Tascam DR-100:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DR100mkII

I have a DR-1 that's a few years old and it's a great machine. Rugged and reliable and very simple to use. It has built in stereo mics as well as a 1/4 jack for other pro quality mics. These machines record in a variety of formats and sampling rates. For voice I do WAV files at 44.1 khz. I would recommend the WAVs for master files and MP3s for access copies. There are a number of free MP3 converters out there that are simple to use also. I use Switch.

I, too, strongly endorse the DR-100. I have had one for my personal use (field recording and mixing deck to recording use) for three years now. It's traveled all over the US and half of Europe. The ability to use either of the two sets of built-in microphones, external XL microphones, or Line-In makes it a very versatile tool. The remote is also extremely handy for settings where the recorder needs to be placed at a distance from the operator/interviewer.

In fact, because of my personal experience with the TASCAM DR-100, I bought one for our Lab, which has been used by a number of the Library faculty for doing interviews with great success.

Again, Tim's comments about recording to WAV format, then creating MP3 access files is spot on. Audacity is free software that does an excellent job of doing just that.

Best,

Dennis

Subject: Please participate -- Quick survey for WESTPAS Disaster Preparedness Workshops

Sent for Julie Page of WESTPAS.

The Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS) requests your assistance to identify potential changes to enhance its workshop offerings on developing disaster response and salvage plans.  A short survey has been developed which asks for input on different delivery models.

WESTPAS offers free (grant-funded) workshops on developing disaster response and salvage plans for collections in heritage institutions. The workshops are two days in length; the first day and the second day are separated by 4-6 weeks to provide time to prepare a very basic draft plan between workshop days.  Colorado has held these workshops several times at different locations throughout the state.  While attendees have found them quite helpful, it is getting more difficult for attendees to travel and make the time commitments required in the original delivery model.

WESTPAS is proposing to create an alternative workshop model. The first "day" of the workshop would be a short series of webinars, at the end of which participants would draft very basic disaster response plans. The second day would be an in-person event to review draft plans and to get experience handling wet materials to be salvaged, something quite hard to do in a webinar!

Prior to undertaking development, WESTPAS needs feedback on this proposed workshop model. If you or someone from your institution is interested in creating a disaster response plan for your institution, please take two minutes to respond to the questions at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/westpas ~ the survey will close on May 15, 2012. Thank you.

Hi all,

A question for you from soon to be smoky Boulder!

I have a student working on transcribing expedition notebooks circa
1890. I'm trying to find some guidelines or standards for doing such
work. Does anyone one have anything they can share with me? So far I've
found this from the LOC (regarding oral history transcriptions):
http://www.loc.gov/vets/transcribe.html and this from the Minnesota
Historical Society:
http://www.mnhs.org/about/departments/processing/transcribing_manuscripts.pdf

Thanks,

A patron has inquired looking for someone to authenticate a Teddy Roosevelt signature.  I'm not sure where to direct her -- since she's not asking for an appraisal, my normal easy out of the American Society of Appraisers website may not apply -- I just really don't have any idea where to send her, so any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

I would say the best evidence is the document the signature is attached to. If it's a land patent, I would be suspicious. These documents were routinely signed by somebody else in the president's name. If it's a letter, more likely. If it's a signature cut from a document, a monetary appraisal would be the only way to go.

There was a good exchange by book dealers on authentication:

Mark, you can also check to see if the "Open Archives Initiative" has any scanned original documents from this Chief Justice. You can search it at:

http://oaister.worldcat.org/

BTW, this service is now also hosted by OCLC.

You can contact autograph experts who handle manuscript material regularly.  Also, try looking in Worldcat/OCLC for an institution that might have material from the same justice - many times librarians are happy to send along jpgs of documents in their holdings for comparison (although be aware this is sometimes a chargeable fee, and often takes some time).  Other places - auction house past auctions that may have illustrated examples, dealer catalogues with the same, etc.  ABPC's manuscript listings can offer some quick clues about where similar documents might have sold in the last 20 years or so (if you aren't yet subscribed, it it worthwhile, as is Americana Exchange).

Good luck!  Sounds like fun.

Hello,

I have been offered some important materials, marketed as having been signed by the author. In this case, they are autographed letters signed by a former U.S. Supreme Court justice (1834). There is no documentation to establish provenance. In these circumstances, who do you work with to authenticate signatures? In your experience, is a certificate of authenticity from a reputable firm meaningful to collectors and does it result in a higher price for the seller? Because I am just now beginning to handle antiquarian materials, I haven't figured all of this out yet. Any feedback is appreciated.
