Arts Council reviews participation at Venice Biennale 2011

In the current financial climate, the Arts Council regrets that it is not in a position to commit the funds necessary to support the six-month representation at the 2011 Venice Biennale of Visual Art.  This difficult and disappointing decision has been reached in light of the reduction to the Arts Council 2010/11 budget of Ł1.1 million and the Chancellor's Budget Announcement of 22nd June. Arlo Guthrie was born with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other, in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York in 1947. He is the eldest son of America's most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Company and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington's Disease.

He grew up surrounded by dancers and musicians: Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred Hellerman and Lee Hays (The Weavers), Leadbelly, Cisco Houston, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, all of whom were significant influences on Arlo's musical career. Guthrie gave his first public performance in 1961 at age 13 and quickly became involved in the music that was shaping the world.

New Productions - Starring Sean Penn

We are delighted to announce that we will be providing the extras for the film, This Must be the Place, starring SEAN PENN.  Filming will be beginning later this month.

The film is directed by director Paolo Sorrentino (Il Divo). The story sees Penn play a wealthy, retired rock star - which shouldn't be too much of a stretch for the Oscar favourite. In the film, Penn's character becomes bored of his rock retirement and goes on a quest to find his father's executioner, an ex-Nazi war criminal who's hiding out in the Us, apparently having lied on the immigration form where it asks visitors to the country if they were ever a member of the Nazi party between 1939 and 1945.Sorrentino wrote the script, which will be his English-language debut, along with Umberto Contarello. The plan is to start shooting once Penn has completed his other upcoming projects: the Farrelly Brothers' The Three Stooges, Asger Leth's Cartel and Doug Liman's Valerie Plame drama Fair Game (taken from imdb.com).

Also, through our directory service we will be involved with another production Neverland. The production will be filming in September and October and they are also holding an open casting (see below for details).

Photoshoot this Saturday

Still some places are left for this Saturday's photoshoot in the Westbury Hotel.

If you prepay before middnight this Wednesday you will receive 2 extra head shots and €10 off. Plus you will receive a free make over from MakeUpFabalicious.com

Currently our members are involved with Fair City, Camelot, PRIMEVAL, Crimecall, This Must be the Place, Neverland, Primetime and various adverts and corporate DVD's.

To find out more information, check out our website by clicking here.

OPEN CASTING FOR NEVERLAND.

An Open Casting for extras for the production NEVERLAND is taking place on August 12th. It will be filmed in Dublin / Wicklow this September and October.

For more information see the Be On Telly section of MovieExtras.ie website.

The MovieExtras.ie directory service will be available to the production team as well.

Send Email Send Email

Plans are under way to find Northern Ireland's favourite family film! The search
is part of Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival's 20th
Anniversary celebrations that culminate in its annual 16 day festival from
11th-26th November.

From `A spoonful of sugar', to `There's no place like home' to `Infinity and
beyond', family films evoke excitement, nostalgia and childhood wonder in all
cinema-goers. Whether we cheer for good guys, bad guys, pirates, gangsters or
wizards, the gripping plots and classic soundtracks of these unforgettable films
have defined movie-making for a century and we all have a favourite!

Cinemagic has screened thousands of films over the last twenty years and the
classic family films are a guaranteed favourite. This year the Cinemagic
Festival wants to hear from you! Which family film should be crowned Northern
Ireland's favourite? What makes you a fan of `The Sound of Music' over `Willy
Wonka'? Are you mesmerized by the flying bicycles in `ET' or do you prefer the
non-stop adventure of `The Goonies'? Perhaps you can watch `The Wizard of Oz'
time and time again or maybe nothing beats the 3D world of Jessie, Buzz and
Woody!

Joan Burney Keatings, Cinemagic Chief Executive commented "The world of movies
is a vibrant and integral part of family life that bridges all generations young
and old. Everyone has a favourite family film and Cinemagic is extremely excited
about discovering what story from the silver screen really captures the
imagination of the public."

How to vote: Film fans of all ages can submit the title of their favourite
family film to Cinemagic by emailing favouritefamilyfilm@...

Please include your name, age, county you live in and a short description of why
it is your favourite family film. The closing date for entries is 11th October
2010. The film that receives the most votes will be screened in Belfast in
November as part of Cinemagic's 20th Anniversary Film Festival.

The 20th Anniversary Coca-Cola Cinemagic International Film and Television
Festival for Young People will unveil a very special programme in September
(festival runs from 11th-26th November) featuring special premieres,
international feature films, documentaries, shorts, foreign language films and
education screenings. Throughout the festival Cinemagic will be offering young
people the opportunity to participate in film events including the Cinemagic
Young Filmmaker competition 2010, the Cinemagic Talent Lab masterclass series
and the education programme for schools. An international youth jury will be
selecting the year's best films and the festival will culminate with a gala
awards night at Belfast's historic City Hall on 26th November.

Cinemagic receives funding support from Northern Ireland Screen, UK Film
Council, Department for Social Development, and Belfast City Council.

Hey folks,

sorry its been a while since my last update, but with the death of my little sister in June, I've pretty much lost track of things and am trying now to get focused once again...

This also pushed back plans for our Orlando Freak Show entry horror production, but plans are in motion for something later in the year that should see us back on track in the film world. Watch this space for more information on that, casting calls and updates!

Yellow Fever Distribution -

The DVD label is still quite young, and so far with only 3 titles out there we have fairly had our eyes opened to this side of the business. With sales sitting at stupid numbers (for a few different reasons) its interesting to see that it costs more to have a film 'on the shelf' than it does to make it sometimes, and that illegal downloads are virtually unstoppable with people (even friends) happily admitting to doing it - with your movie! What they dont keep in mind is that we are an independent studio with no funding, and that their actions are quickly driving us to a close...

If anyone would be interested in purchasing titles from our label, please go to - http://yfpondvd.webs.com/apps/webstore/

2nd Annual YFIFF/YellowCon -

Kicking off on August 27th - 30th at the Stormont Hotel, this years festival is jam packed with events, films, games, and more! Launching on Friday night at 5pm, we start the evening with a charity zombie walk at Stormont - leading right up to the house on the hill - in a bid to raise funds for the Billy Caldwell Foundation and Make A Wish Foundation. Special tickets for the event - which include your donation - can be purchased from our webstore at http://yellowcon.webs.com/apps/webstore/ and come with a selection of goodies when bought, including free grub at the Dead Meat BBQ which follows right afterwards.

Back at the hotel follows a night filled with zombie treats, with 2 award winning US undead flicks and a number of RPG games courtesy of the Arkham Gaming Centre...

Looking for an artist to work with your group?  View our community artist database, which is regularly updated on our website.

Art Play Shop

In the current climate, it is nice to know that at Play Resource we are working hard to reduce the price of art and craft staples. Here is just a taster of what we have to offer:

  • Felt sheet A4 - WAS 40p each - NOW 30p each
  • Felt value packWAS £5.25 - NOW £4.50
  • Funky foam A4 sheet - WAS 50p each - NOW 40p each
  • Glitter glue - WAS £1.99 - NOW £1.25

Two of our most popular summer activities are face painting and jewellery making. Face painting is a staple at any summer scheme, outdoor event or festival and anyone can do it, regardless of experience. Stock up on supplies from our Face Painting Price List, and take inspiration from our attached Craft Sheet to get you up and running. Grimas face paints are a high quality water based make up that washes off easily. Best of all a large number of faces can be completed from just a basic set of colours that will stretch your budget. Have you thought about painting faces as a fundraising activity?

We have recently expanded our jewellery section to include new beads and attachments that are perfect for group activities. Our Jewellery Making Price List will give you a flavour of the wide range of products we stock in this section.

For all of your shopping needs just download the new Shop Price List for the full listing of all available in the Art and Play Shop. The format is designed to make planning and estimating costs much easier.

Finally - reduce, reuse and recycle! We encourage all our members to bring their own bags with them, or make use of the cardboard boxes available in the warehouse! Play Resource cotton shopper bags are on sale in the shop for only 99p, and are a much nicer alternative to plastic. So do your bit for the environment whilst supporting your local charity at the same time!

EDANN! 14 - I saw you from behind 04/08/10
Full of Win
Whose Museum / Collapsing Opposites
 3th August - 22nd August

Whose Museum formed in 2008 when Canadian nerd-rock band, Collapsing Opposites, began collecting items from their audiences at shows. Since then the collection has continued to expand and transform with each new venue, meandering between material source and archive, as artists and curators have been invited to alter works into various exhibitions, paintings, animations, sculptures and installations. Following their most recent forays on tour, Collapsing Opposites will transform Exchange Gallery into a recording studio gone laboratory, where they will capture their new material while attempting to combine the items in the collection into one semi-cohesive entity. For the duration of the show visitors will be encouraged to add to the collection.

A Collapsing Opposites gig will follow the exhibition - location and date TBA.
Milk And Cookies After Dark
Doors 8.30pm, Friday August 13th, The Basement @ Clarendon Street

This months Milk and Cookies leaves the reassuring confines of Exchange Dublin, popping over the city to the Clarendon House basement (on Clarendon St, off Wicklow St).

DANCE! Milk & Cookie Stories are proud to announce our next event, well – our next event is something a bit special. This is Milk & Cookies – After Dark. It is Friday August 13th, in the Clarendon Basement on Clarendon Street. Doors are at 8.30pm. the show starts at 9.30pm, it’s €5 in, and we will go on until late. That’s LATE.
After 9 unbroken months of stories, milk & cookies – we felt everyone could do with letting their hair down a little. I mean, everyone’s so nice. So we decided to put together something a little different. Milk & Cookies – After Dark is a basement party, set over two stages with bands (soulful, funky, jazzy bands), comedians (good ones), poets, dancers, DJ’s and of course, lots of good old fashioned storytellers (because that’s just what we do). And weirder things too, but we’re a little loathe to spoil them at this point. Just trust us – you haven’t seen much like this before. So – write it down, get yourself dressed impressive and come get a little rowdy with everyone.
We’ll still have some slots for open mic storytelling available, so if you have a story, especially one that you maybe shouldn’t tell in polite company, we want to hear from you. Similarly though, if you have a strange little talent or performance piece you’re just dying to share with the world (think the wonderful Liana tearing a phonebook in half at M&C IX), be it contortionism, brainwashing, anything suitably impressive and more than a little unusual – we are absolutely dying to make friends and give you an audience to embarrass yourself in front of. If this sounds like your calling please drop us a line – leave us a comment below, or check out our Facebook page, our email address or Twitter. Hell, smoke signal if you like. We probably won’t be able to read it, but we’re not picky.
To the line-up!
The Jazzberries
Jon Dots
Miranda Al-Raad
Jewel Clarke
Roger Gregg
The Glen Coco Experience
Gareth Stack
Mr. Balloonatic
DJ Pipboy of Hooligan Disco

This will evolve and grow as we add more and more to the list – you can also find links to most of these amazing people’s webpages with a few exploratory clicks. Believe us when we say we have standards, and that these standards are high. If you haven’t heard of someone on this bill, it’s because you are about to, soon. Keep checking back for more updates.
And a couple of notes – the event is BYOB, so please be responsible. If beer is your poison, try and make it cans instead of bottles. We are not selling alcohol at this event, and although there is no age limit as such, please be advised that this event is for mature audiences only. Rest assured though, we’re still bringing the cookies.
Could use a party? We know you could.
Because Milk & Cookies ’s ♥’s you!
Exhibition: Maria De La Rosa Soriano
7PM, Thursday, 9th August

Maria de la Rosa Soriano is an artist from Granada Spain, whose practise in a variety of media examines dreamlike new dimensions of reality. Through her innovative use of color and materials, her ancestral yet alive work creates an undeniable invitation to touch, to apply all of the senses. Soriano's work offers a voyage, leaving the spectator to choose where the experience takes them. This exhibition consist of six pieces, using the agressive colors and powerful strokes characteristic of the artist, combining different elements, and recreates the artistic chaos resulting from the exploration of an unfamiliar city.

Bye Buy My Life Sale
Saturday 14th August, 3PM - 6PM
As some of you will already know, Anna, one of Exchange's dearest compatriots is moving away. Since she definitely won't be able to bring it all with her, she has decided to sell off lots of her clothes, books, magazines and a couple of extra strange things. She has excellent taste so you know it's all good!

There'll be lots of other stalls too selling cakes, clothes, DVDs, records and other wonderful things!...

So come, bag a bargain, say bye and buy (some part of) Anna's life. Or part of someone else's.
Demoscene Night: Chromosphere Agency
8PM – 10PM, Thursday August 5th

A presentation of demos, animations and compos created in movement called
'Demoscene'- environment of coders, programmers, crackers and music composers.

Those presentations will be specific for their aspect of seriously treated inquiry in the sense of technical and artistic excellence. The works presented will come from different platforms, format and styles, and will be selected from products created over the last decade.

The idea to use Exchange for this event derives from the non-commercial characteristic of this place and the specific atmosphere and technical background which allows to create nice (and handy sweet, like candy) evenings resembling presentations at Demoparties.
HELP This time we mean it
Exchange is looking for someone, some lovely dear sweet man or woman or transgendered person to help with our rota. Rota keeping involves setting up a schedule of volunteers to staff the space. It's a wonderful helpful thing to do, so step up :)

We also need lots of lovely facilitators for events - folks to help set up, manage and run the Exchange nights you love so much.

If you'd like to help out in either capacity, get in touch, puhlease.
BOOKINGS / PROMOTIONS

If you have an event you want to book, you can directly contact bookings@....

NORTHERN IRELAND SCREEN RETURNS Ł22 MILLION TO LOCAL ECONOMY IN 2009/10

Northern Ireland Screen's latest annual report for the year 2009-2010 is published at the same time as cameras start to roll in Belfast on HBO’s Game of Thrones, a television series which is said to be one of the largest ever to shoot in Europe. The report encapsulates the agency’s achievements, cultural highlights and educational successes of the past 12 months.

Bucking the recession, in the past year Northern Ireland Screen’s main production investment fund (financed by Invest NI and part funded by the European Regional Development Fund) returned Ł22 million to the local economy at a ratio of 5.5:1, on an investment of Ł3.9 million. Your Highness (pictured), a major feature film from Universal Pictures, which shot in the Paint Hall and various other locations around Northern Ireland brought in Ł11.78 million of this.

Northern Ireland Screen’s Education Department, Irish Language Broadcast Fund and the exhibition sector all performed strongly over the past year.

'Sparrow'AUGURIES: An Exhibition of Paintings by Kelly Dunagan, Filmbase Exhibition Space, 10 - 15 August
American artist Kelly Dunagan presents "Auguries", a series of mixed-media paintings of (mostly) dead birds. Dark humor and a sense of the macabre pervade the pieces, which employ the interplay of form and void to evoke ideas about life and death. In contrast to the dark subject matter, the colors of the paintings are bright and vibrant, and the style is eclectic, influenced by graphic design, classical painting, and graffiti art.  Kelly Dunagan has a B.A. in visual arts from Stanford University, where she received the Louis Sudler prize for creativity in the arts.  She is currently working as a marine biologist and will be attending Oxford University next year to pursue a Master of Science degree.  For more information, visit : kellydunagan.net

Arts Council Study reveals poor living and working conditions of artists
The average professional artist living in Northern Ireland earns just ÂŁ7,500 a year from their work as an artist, despite having a higher level of formal education than the wider labour force.

New research published by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Arts Council/An Chomhairle EalaĂon, reveals how many artists are now working on the island, the level of state support provided to artists in other countries, and the challenges they face as they pursue their chosen professions.

In the most comprehensive study for a generation, the research report sheds new light on what it means to be an artist, writer, painter, musician or performer in modern day Ireland, north and south.

The Living and Working Conditions of Artists in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland shows that artists are a highly educated group, with over two-thirds having attained a university degree. They are also hard working, putting in more than 55 hours per week on average and frequently holding down extra jobs to support their creative endeavours.

In stark contrast to their academic achievements and evident commitment, however, the overwhelming majority of artists still earn well below the average income. Lack of provision for pensions also spells financial hardship ahead for the current generation of artists.

Commenting on the report CAF director Heather Floyd said. "The study comes at time when the arts on both sides of the border are facing an uncertain future and highlights the importance of support for artists at all stages of their career. It is imperative that effective support structures are developed in consultation with artists and artist groups to allow artists - the key to any vibrant arts sector - to be able to flourish."

Changes to the scheme have been introduced in this round of the programme affecting who can apply for the top band of funding.

Funding schemes available within the current SIAP programme are as follows:

NICVA publish bleak forecast for voluntary and community sectors spending cuts
Research commissioned by the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action, from Oxford Economics and Economic Research Institute of Northern Ireland reveals the likely impact of public spending cuts on Northern Ireland.

NICVA Chief Executive Seamus McAleavey said: “This is the most detailed external analysis yet of what is coming down the track and it makes for painful reading. The coming cuts represent the biggest challenge yet for our Executive and it is vital that the correct decisions are made. The choices made now will shape our economy and society for a generation”.

The report examines three potential scenarios for public expenditure cuts:

If made across the board cuts will amount to 8.4% over five years
Ring-fencing health will mean cuts of 15% across other departments
Ring-fencing health and education will mean 22% cuts on everything else.

CAF is currently carrying out a survey of community arts in the region which the sector will be able to use as a lobbying tool. This document will indicate the number of participants, organisations, employees and volunteers involved in community arts, as well it's impact on government priorities (health, education, social inclusion and economy) across all electoral areas. It will be the first document of its kind in the region and will be particularly important in the run up to the forthcoming comprehensive spend review. A strong report will help to make a case for the work and impact of the community arts sector and help to build a case against spending cuts.

Mr Robinson said: "We have all come a long way in the past decade and it is important that we now build on the good work that has already been achieved in shaping a better future for everyone.

"We want to build a society where everyone shares in and enjoys the benefits of peace and stability. The Programme for Cohesion, Sharing and Integration will address issues impacting on disaffected young people, tackle the conditions that perpetuate urban interfaces and rural segregation, as well as addressing those issues facing both established minority ethnic groups and new arrivals within our community.

"We look forward to hearing the views of people from right across our society and we would encourage everyone to take the opportunity to either attend a public meeting or to respond in writing. It is important that you have your say on how we can make our society a better place for everyone."

Hi there,

Here's a reminder for you about this year's Darklight movie making challenge Free Your Film...
Sony Ericsson are collaborating with Darklight to find 3 aspiring filmmakers. We’re offering a budget of €3000 to make your short film, which will then be premiered on the opening night of the Darklight Film Festival. The films will also be given additional exposure by Darklight and Sony Ericsson.

As many of you know, it’s not easy making a film, but help will be on hand. Darklight will provide invaluable support from their expert guest producer, Katie Holly from Blinder Films. Amongst other projects, she has produced The Savage Eye, 100 Mornings and Sensations.

Sony Ericsson will provide an HD video camera, which you'll get to keep. The HD video camera comes in the form of the new Sony Ericsson Vivaz, the world’s smallest HD video camera phone. It’s a great piece of technology that has many advantages over other HD cameras. And, when you see what it’s capable of, we think you’ll agree it’s the first filmmaker’s phone.

All that’s left to do is get your thinking caps on, then get those ideas to us before the competition deadline midnight 23rd August 2010.

For more information go to HTTP://www.darklight.ie/freeyourfilm. Become a fan on facebook. Keep track of all the chat on Twitter #freeyourfilm

Thanks for your time, and Best of Luck!
