Are you trying to improve on some weak signals? Recently I was able to test the
Watson WRP-1300 Preamplifier. In my test I saw an improvement on weak
analog/digital conventional signals and analog/digital trunking systems. You can
add this preamp to your current antenna set up and you will be up and running
within minutes. Along with the Watson WRP-1300 Preamp I would recommend
purchasing the optional ac adapter (or it can be powered by optional 9-volt

Arrest Puts Focus on Protesters' Texting
By COLIN MOYNIHAN
New York Times
Published: October 5, 2009
As demonstrations have evolved with the help of text messages and online social
networks, so too has the response of law enforcement.
On Thursday, F.B.I. agents descended on a house in Jackson Heights, Queens, and
spent 16 hours searching it. The most likely reason for the raid: a man who
lived there had helped coordinate communications among protesters at the Group
of 20 summit in Pittsburgh.
The man, Elliot Madison, 41, a social worker who has described himself as an
anarchist, had been arrested in Pittsburgh on Sept. 24 and charged with
hindering apprehension or prosecution, criminal use of a communication facility
and possession of instruments of crime. The Pennsylvania State Police said he
was found in a hotel room with computers and police scanners while using the
social-networking site Twitter to spread information about police movements. He
has denied wrongdoing.
American protesters first made widespread use of mass text messages in New York,
during the 2004 Republican National Convention, when hundreds of people used a
system called TXTmob to share information. Messages, sent as events unfolded,
allowed demonstrators and others to react quickly to word of arrests, police
mobilizations and roving rallies. Mass texting has since become a valued tool
among protesters, particularly at large-scale demonstrations.
And police and government officials appear to be increasingly aware of such
methods of communication. In 2008, for instance, the New York City Law
Department issued a subpoena seeking information from the graduate student who
created the code for TXTmob. Still, Mr. Madison, who was released on bail
shortly after his arrest, may be among the first to be charged criminally while
sending information electronically to protesters about the police.
A criminal complaint in Pennsylvania accuses him of "directing others,
specifically protesters of the G-20 summit, in order to avoid apprehension after
a lawful order to disperse."
"He and a friend were part of a communications network among people protesting
the G-20," Mr. Madison's lawyer, Martin Stolar, said on Saturday. "There's
absolutely nothing that he's done that should subject him to any criminal
liability."
A search warrant executed by the F.B.I. at Mr. Madison's house authorized agents
and officers looking for violations of federal rioting laws to seize computers
and phones, black masks and clothes and financial records and address books.
Among the items seized, according to a list prepared by the agents, were
electronic equipment, newspapers, books and gas masks. The items also included
what was described as a picture of Lenin.
Since the raid, no other charges have been filed against Mr. Madison. On Friday,
Mr. Stolar argued in Federal District Court in Brooklyn that the warrant was
vague and overly broad. Judge Dora L. Irizarry ordered the authorities to stop
examining the seized materials until Oct. 16, pending further orders.
Mr. Stolar said that the reason for the Jackson Heights raid would not be clear
until an affidavit used to secure the search warrant was unsealed. But he said
that commentary among agents indicated that it was related to Mr. Madison's
arrest in Pittsburgh, where he participated in the Tin Can Comms Collective, a
group of people who collected information and used Twitter to send mass text
messages describing protest-related events that they observed on the streets.
There were many such events during the two days of the summit. Demonstrators
marched through town on the opening day of the gathering, at times breaking
windows and fleeing. And on both nights, police officers fired projectiles and
hurled tear gas canisters at students milling near the University of Pittsburgh.
After Mr. Madison's arrest, other Tin Can participants continued to send
messages, now archived on Twitter's Web site. Many of those messages tracked
police movements. One read: "SWAT teams rolling down 5th Ave." Another read:
"Report received that police are `nabbing' anyone that looks like a protester /
Black Bloc. Stay alert watch your friends!"
But even as protesters were watching the police, it appeared that the police
were monitoring the protesters' communications.
Just after 1 p.m. on Sept. 24, a text message stated: "A comms facility was
raided, but we are still fully operational please continue to submit reports."
Nine hours later, a text read: "Scanner just said be advised we're being
monitored by anarchists through scanner."
On Sunday night Mr. Madison said that the search of his home was an effort to
"stifle dissent," and added that several groups in Pittsburgh, including the
summit organizers, had used Twitter accounts to describe events related to the
meetings.
"They arrested me for doing the same thing everybody else was doing, which was
perfectly legal," he said. "It was crucial for people to have the information we
were sending."

Walter, you are right unplug everything. I also purchased 10 foot

Yes but please remember to discharge the static from any cables that do run
in from outside before you reconnect them.
Seen that done many a time.
Also seem people jump rather wildly as the static discharges through them
too following a storm.
In my good old days at the BBC transmitter sites across the U.K.
we always used an egore switch to ground the lot to earth via a metal block
with the releavent connectors on
both poles shorted together and then to earth
that way nothing can build up in the transmission line nor the coax [centre
or braid]
a cheap and cheerful shack trick is to use a bulldog clip!

Ok, I have come to find out the hard way, to just unplug everything when
not in use.
I have always been "careful", using "top-dollar" gear to stop a surge or
make a lightning strike "clamp" or go to ground.
I am sure many or some of you are also in Florida as I am, and know we ARE
the LIGHTNING CAPITAL, and we have storms come up especially from the Gulf
of Mexico and built to a great lightning producer in many time under 1 hour!
So we can leave on a nice day, 10% chance of rain and all heck can break
loose in literally minutes to an hour!
I just learned that all the add-ons in the world does not help in a DIRECT
LIGHTNIN STRIKE!
I had even wrapped my anodized aluminum mast (I made with the help of
Drake Dimitry here in Pensacola @ Heights Towers), with brown specialty duct
tape to match the paint on the house and the metal roof.
The lightning even "peeled" one side of the tape leaving the edges
charred, and came right on in taking out; a BCD996T, BCD396XT, 898XLT, 2
two-way radios (256 channels each), FT-8800R Yaesu, and some other
accessories, so basically $3,000.00 + of equipment I have spent years to
either buy or collect, ruined in a few milliseconds.
So, I do not trust the labels of products claiming to "make" lightning go
to ground and save your exspensive radio(s)!
UNPLUGGING IS THE ONLY WAY TO ENSURE SURVIVAL!
I have started rebuilding my "shack", so far I only have another BCD996T I
picked up for a decent $350 since the new 996XT's ar out (I hope to get one
of those soon, as I loved the 396XT, (besides, all of the nice newer uniden
digital scanners com with online free programming software and firmware
upgrades as well as the manuals, hey, even saves paper! I have a 16 channel
maxon VHF radio I got for $60 at a swap meet, and am using echolink right
now for a ham radio! Glad we have local repeater(s) on echolink W4VIY being
the local nearest me.
But I can pretty much say, it will take a good 2 years to replace
everything, and this time, I am going with the extra little bit on home
insurance to cover that, luckily my insurance agency has that option, I hear
many do not.
So, take care, and just unplug even if you just leave home a few hours, it
is no fun to come back to that burt phenol smell of fried PC boards and a
light blueish haze and find all you electronic "babies" or "toys" have bit
the bullet.

RadioShack Invites Consumers to Rediscover 'THE SHACK' Through New Brand
Creative Platform
--Integrated Media Campaign to Contemporize the Brand and Reinforce RadioShack's
Authority in Innovative Products, Leading Brands and Knowledgeable Associates
FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug 03, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/
-- RadioShack Corporation (NYSE: RSH) will unveil its new brand creative
platform, "THE SHACK," on August 6, supported by an integrated television, print
and digital media schedule, as well as a high-profile, three-day launch event
taking place in New York City and San Francisco. The new creative was developed
by Butler, Shine, Stern and Partners of Sausalito, CA, which was named the
Company's creative agency of record in April.
"Trust is a critical attribute of any successful retailer, and the reality is
that most people trust friends, not corporations. When a brand becomes a friend,
it often gets a nickname - take FedEx or Coke, for example. Our customers,
associates and even the investor community have long referred to RadioShack as
'THE SHACK,' so we decided to embrace that fact and share it with the world,"
said Lee Applbaum, RadioShack's Chief Marketing Officer. "This creative is not
about changing our name. Rather, we're contemporizing the way we want people to
think about our brand. THE SHACK speaks to consumers in a fresh, new voice and
distinctive creative look that reinforces RadioShack's authority in innovative
products, leading brands and knowledgeable, helpful associates."
"We have tremendous equity in consumers' minds around cables, parts and
batteries, but it's critically important that we help them to understand the
role that we play in keeping people connected in this highly mobile world,"
added Applbaum. "You will see a real focus on mobility and wireless products
from leading brands in our new advertising."
RadioShack announced last month the addition of T-Mobile to its lineup of
wireless carriers in 4,000 stores as part of its strategy to increase its
authority and share in mobility and connectivity.
"We've partnered with RadioShack to develop a creative platform that will cause
people to take another look at THE SHACK. Everything about the advertising - the
media, format, style, music and tone - will contribute to a new interpretation
of the brand," said Greg Stern, BSSP's Chief Executive Officer. "Everyone knows
RadioShack. Our job is to communicate what THE SHACK stands for today."
RadioShack also announced a partnership with seven-time Tour de France winner,
Lance Armstrong, both to sponsor his new American Pro-Tour cycling team and to
work with the Lance Armstrong Foundation and LIVESTRONG campaign in the global
fight against cancer.
"This is an exciting time at RadioShack," added Applbaum. "The announcement
about Lance and Team RadioShack generated a great deal of consumer excitement
and a reappraisal of our brand, which is exactly what THE SHACK is intended to
do. Having Lance on our team will no doubt accelerate our brand's evolution."
To bring the new creative strategy to life, RadioShack will host Netogether, a
three-day event taking place in New York City's Times Square and San Francisco's
Justin Herman Plaza on August 6, 7 and 8. The event will connect the cities with
two, massive, 17-foot laptop computers with webcams that allow live video and
audio exchanges. Netogether will feature live music, celebrity appearances and
unique contests to demonstrate how technology can keep people connected - even
3,000 miles apart. Consumers are invited to visit the event and chat with
friends or family via the laptops, or to join in the conversation online at
www.radioshack.com/theshack, where they can offer real-time comments on the live
video feeds.

Annually there has been a "Scanner Listeners Forum" at the Peoria Superfest
(Hamfest). This year the forum and discussion will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday
September 19. The forum/meeting will be held in the Forums Building, one
building west of the Youth Building (the largest display building).
John Coker, N9FAM, will moderate the forum. Topics usually include new
scanners, statewide radio system updates (including Starcom21), changes in
public safety systems, trunking systems, military aircraft, sources of
frequencies, and other topics as raised by the attendees. Several experts are
usually in the audience, and can answer most questions that are typically
raised.
Norm Schrein of National Communications magazine will be selling Bearcat radios,
accessories, and subscriptions in his commercial booth in the Youth Building
both Saturday and Sunday. Other vendors will have scanners and accessories
also.
If there is enough advance interest, the Scanner Listener Forum will be held
again on Sunday, September 20, with the time and building location to be
announced that day. If you wish to have one on Sunday, please let

NASA speeds moon communication to near real-time
Wave amplifier enables lunar orbiter to transmit massive amounts of data at 100
Mb/second
Sharon Gaudin
August 20, 2009 (Computerworld) How often do you go to make a call on your cell
phone and you're stymied by a bad connection?
Consider trying to make that call from ... well, the moon.
NASA engineers did when they were setting up the communications system that
would send massive amounts of data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter across
238,000 miles back to Earth. Agency officials described the new system to
reporters yesterday.
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force
Station in Florida on June 18. A second satellite, the Lunar Crater Observation
and Sensing Satellite, lifted off at the same time.
NASA scientists are hoping the two satellites can provide them with new
information about the moon. NASA has been planning on putting humans back on the
moon by 2020 but those plans are in flux giving the current economic conditions
and the Obama administration's review of NASA's space missions.
NASA officials say that getting more information about moon will be key to any
return there.
The Reconnaissance Orbiter is expected to orbit about 31 miles above the surface
of the moon for the next year as part of an effort to map the moon's surface and
find a good landing site for future NASA manned missions there. The orbiter is
designed to compile high-resolution 3-D maps of the moon's surface and survey it
at many different spectral wavelengths.
According to NASA, the orbiter will amass more information about the moon's
surface and environment than any previous mission.
The issue has been how to get all of that data back to scientists on Earth where
it could do them some good.
To make that happen, NASA is depending on a 13-inch-long tube, called a
Traveling Wave Tube Amplifier, which was built by L-3 Communications Electron
Technologies. It's designed to enable the orbiter to send massive amounts of
images and data at an "unusually fast" rate to a receiver at a K-band antenna
network at White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico. It's the first high-data
rate K-band transmitter to fly on a NASA spacecraft, according to the space
agency.
Because of the amplifier, the orbiter should be able to transmit 461 gigabytes
of data per day, NASA noted, adding that it's more information than is generally
found in a four-story library. And it transmits the information at a rate of up
to 100 megabytes per second, compared to a typical high-speed Internet service
of about 1 to 3 megabytes per second.
"We're sending back more data than ever, and it's nearly real time," said
project manager Todd Peterson in an interview today.
According to NASA, the device is a vacuum with electrodes inside that are geared
to amplify microwave signals to high power. It's a good set up for sending large
amounts of data over a long distance because it provides more power and more
efficiency than the traditional transistor amplifier, NASA noted.
NASA has used Traveling Wave Tube Amplifiers in other missions - notably with
Kepler and Cassini - but they weren't as powerful. With the amplifier for the
lunar orbiter, engineers redesigned the circuitry and built it by hand.
As most know the Radio Shack PRO- 2004-5-6 Are very good scanners However the
EP Displays burns out They have been discontinued at R/S , I have replace the
one in My 2006 Before not a hard job .
Still available on E-Bay http://tinyurl.com/m5gf5s
Well mine went out again, and what I need to know before ordering another one
is there a way to Measure the Voltage going to the 2 Leads of the EL Display ,
I see a little xfmr So I assume it would be a High AC Voltage
I do not have the Schematic , and Hate to buy another display if something is
wrong with the ckt
Thanks
