I have started a table created in Microsoft Word to list one packet
from all my available sugar packet sets that are available for
exchange, but I am finding that it makes the file quite large for
sending via email, even using win zip it doesn't reduce the file size
by much so I wanted to ask if anyone knows a better way to catalogue
packets? also if anyone is interested in my list please let me know,
ideally I would like sets in return for my sets but I do have a
limited amount of UK Langdon sets 6/6, and UK Fair trade sticks 3/3,
and Mexican Dot sticks 5/5 which I am prepared to share out if anyone
doesn't have those in their collection, after all they are just
sitting here doing nothing so someone may as well enjoy them, if
anyone needs one of these particular three sets or all three sets
please contact me with your name and address details and I will post
them out, obviously the offer is only available until my supply has
run out.

I am no expert on this so if anyone knows better I hope they will say.
If you are creating the file with Word then the size will very much depend upon
how you
format it:
If you create a table with borders then it is going to get large and more or
less any way
you save it the file will still be large. An MS-Excel spreadsheet is usually
much more
efficient than an MS-Word table, but only useful if you and the people you are
sending to
have Excel.
If your file is not a table but has been formatted income columns, with bold
text etc then it
is usually more efficient to try to produce a PDF file. PDFs generally take
much less space
and more or less anyone can read them. However, I am not sure how easy this is
to do
from Word on Windows (I have a Mac).
If you really want the list small you have to abandon formatting and save it as
a plain text
(ASCII file). These use a lot less space but at the cost of style.
I presume on Windows you can do something like Save As and then have the option
to
save as a particular format, in which case choose plain text, ascii or something
similar.
I hope this helps,
David Phillips
Hello everybody, I have 2 TATE+LYLE Holyday Inn packets. Can somebody
tell me how much packets are in this series? I think these are minimum

There are two sets which UKSC has called
Holiday Inn (2) and Holiday Inn (1).
The packets in your photoalbumn are from set (2).
The difference is that they have the words "London & Liverpool" beneath "Tate +
Lyle".
I have some of these packets from Beryl Laishley's collection which I have added
to the
SUGARCAT database this morning. You should have been given the userid and
password
to access this when you joined UKSC.
Set (1) -
<http://www.uksucrologistsclub.org.uk/sugarcat-1/cat.php?pset=1980HI1w>
Set (2) -
<http://www.uksucrologistsclub.org.uk/sugarcat-1/cat.php?pset=1980HI2w>
As I understand it we do not know for certain how many packets there were in
each set but
as you will see there are at least 11 in set 2:
Birmingham
Bristol
Dover
Heathrow
Leicester
Liverpool
Marble Arch
Newcastle
Plymouth
Slough/Windsor
Swiss Cottage
Again I less sure about how many there are in this set but again it may be up to
11 and
they are the same as set 2. However, the Marble Arch packet comes in two
versions. One
has a cerise (red-pink) coloured sun whilst I am told the other has a white sun.
I have not
seen the white one and I don't know if it was a misprint or if the white was
original and
was replaced because the sun could not be seen.
Any other information on these packets would be welcome.
I hope this helps

Hi David, Many thanks for your quick answer. Congratulations with the
Sugarcat database. It's great work! It was nice to meet you at the
Dover sugarmeeting. Jan
Hi
Has anyone else noticed that the Sweet N Low, Pink Panther, Granulated
Sweetener set may have 10/10 different Pink Panther poses on the front
of the packets, but only seems to have 6 actual different sentences? as
some of these sentences are repeated on more than one or two different
packets, the only sentences I see from sets of 10 are:
1) IDEAL FOR HOT AND COLD DRINKS.
2)SPRINKLES ON CEREAL AND FRUIT.
3)HAVE YOU TRIED OUR TABLETS?.
4) GOOD FOR COOKING AND BAKING.
5) HAVE YOU TRIED OUR SUGAR FREE JELLIES?.
6)FOR RECIPES VISIT OUR WEBSITE.
I don't know if this was noted in the Club newsletter or not but I've
only just noticed it myself, if there are any other sentences it would
be interesting to know.

There are two sets - Red and Blue.
The "red" ones were in Issues 49/50 and do have different writing, I don't think
this was
mentioned in the newsletter but it was mentioned in passing in issue 51.
We called them "red" because the words "Granulated Sugar" are printed in red.
The "blue" ones were in Issue 51 and all have identical writing in the back.
They are "blue"
because the words "Granulated Sugar" on the front are in blue.
We also mentioned in Issue 51 about the way different over-printing makes it
look like
the PP has different expressions.
There is a PDF on the website for both sets and the combinations for the Red set
are as
follows:
Pink Panther (cheers) red - "for recipes visit our website"
Pink Panther (cuppa) red - "good for baking and cooking"
Pink Panther (dancing) red - "sprinkles on cereal and fruit"
Pink Panther (hat) red - "have you tried our tablets"
Pink Panther (jump) red - "ideal for hot and cold drinks"
Pink Panther (laid back) red - "good for cooking and baking"
Pink Panther (lie front) red - "for recipes visit our website"
Pink Panther (recline) red - "have you tried our sugar free jellies"
Pink Panther (sit) red - "have you tried our tablets"
Pink Panther (surf) red - "have you tried our sugar free jellies"
The descriptions "cheers", "cuppa" and so on are made up by me and I hope make
sense.
It would be interesting to know if any other combinations exist.

Hello collectors,
- About the Sweet'N Low2 series 6+1 I have the 7th packet (with
Granulated Sweetener in red on back) also with the email address
www.sweetnlow.co.uk, like on the other 6 packets. Exist also wit email
address www.dietaryfoods.co.uk. with *contains a sourse of
Phenylalanine.
- I have also a packet with *contains Phenylalanine on back, and
without email address.
- An other packet with New Blend on front and 2 different backsides.
I think all these packets without email addresses are older singles.
- At last also an USA Sweet'N Low2 packet.
You can see all these packets in my photo album.
Best greetings, Jan Torfs
Jan,
Thanks for posting these. I have now had the opportunity to look properly at
them.
If you are agreeable I would like to put these variations on the online
catalogue and
mention the first in the next newsletter. Would it be possible to e-mail me the
pictures
so that I can be sure I have them in as good a resolution as possible.
Many thanks,
David Phillips

I have added a PDF to the files section of the Yahoo Group showing my current
understanding of the SPLENDA packets.
This is a work in progress. I would be grateful to know of any corrections or
additions to the
information shown.
If anyone would like a better resolution version of this PDF I can e-mail one.

There hasn't been much traffic on this group for a while.
Mike Henley has identified a new set. Rather dull looking brown and whist flat
sugar sticks
from The Banger Factory in Victoria Plaza above Victoria station in London. He
doesn't know
how many there are but things there are at least 5. However, they have "Coffee &
Co" on them
and various slogans.
We will include them in the next issue of Sweet Thoughts but ideally would like
to confirm
the details. If any group members know any more and can make a trip to Victoria
(those
living outside the UK are excused) then please let me know.

On second thoughts, looking at Mike's writing, the name is probably "The Bagel
Factory"
which definitely exists in Victoria Place, not Plaza.

Today in Starbucks I found some Sweet N' Low sachets I have not seen before.
Instead of
the Pink Panther on the front they have cartoon drawings of musical instruments.
I found
9 variations but I suspect there is a tenth.
The all say "In tune with your taste".
The instruments / slogans on reverse are:
Sax - Have you tried our tablets?
Drum - Have you tried our tablets?
Trumpet (or bugle) - For recipes visit our website
Piano - For Recipes visit our website
Harp - Good for cooking and baking
Trombone - Good for cooking and baking
Guitar - Have you tried dour sugar free jellies?
Drum & Cymbal - Have you tried our sugar free jellies?
Cello - Ideal for hot and cold Drinks

Hi!
I can offer korean sugar packets now.
I need airlines and macdonald sugar packets
and euro mint coin with folder and uncirculated
banknotes.
best regards
I have recently added a number of set packets courtesy of Pam Miller.
This means that in order to complete the UK sets list, as compiled by UKSC,
there are seven sets for which I do not have a packet. I can created these
using a graphics program since all of them are either brown, white or sweetener
versions of other sets I do have scans for.
However, if anyone reading this has one of these sets and can scan both sides of
one of the packets I would be very grateful. Please attach them and e-mail them
to me.
A PDF showing the packets is in the files section

Hi there, I am Diane and I used to collect sugar packets when my husband was
alive and we used to go up and down the country on motorways.
What I would like to know now is, can I get a packet of 1000 packets from a
retail store (like viking online the office supplies people).
I need a whole set of the numbers on the packets and I thought that this would
be an easy way of collecting them as now I haven't got a car and I don't know
now how to collect these packets.
What do you others think about this idea please?
Could I go to local shops to collect all the numbers do you think? Please give
me some ideas to think about.
Thank you very much for reading this.
Diane
Diane,
There are places where you can buy a large box of packets such as Viking or
Costco but the packets are always a bit boring. In other countries, most
notably France, it is possible to buy varied sets in supermarkets and new ones
are issued on a regular basis.
The numbers on packets are Printing Machine Lane Numbers. In my experience some
people collect all the different numbers for a packet but most do not.
I used to get most of my packets by visiting cafes and the like. However, it
can be hard work these days to find cafes with distinctive packets, there are
far fewer than there used to be.
Nowadays I get most of my packets through the UK Sucrologists Club. So, here
follows some advertising.
We send out a newsletter every quarter. This is a useful source of information
of where packets can be found. For example the last but one newsletter had
details of some new packets available from Martin Carwardine who have a few
branches dotted around the South West. I got mine from Salisbury. I thought
there were 10 white and 10 brown all with different sayings but now someone has
found a couple of others and we will be reporting on these in the next
newsletter. We also have a New Finds section where Mike Henley has been our
chief finder but now has stiff competition from Martin Gething.
The Club usually sends out packets with each mailing. Generally these are from
outside the UK.
You will also get a list of members which will enable you to write to others who
are interested and swap packets with them. There are some very keen swappers
out there although I have to confess that with my role of editing the newsletter
and website I am one of the worst for replying.
Once a year we have an exchange meeting. The next is in Swindon. You don't
have to be a member to attend. I felt apprehensive about attending at first
because I had very few packets and almost none to swap. In fact I didn't go to
the first couple after I joined the club because I thought people would be weird
and I just had so few to swap. When I volunteered to edit the website I though
I had better go. Nobody minds in the least if you have no swaps. (I am making
no observation on the weirdness.) People lay out their swaps on a table and
then people just walk about taking what interests them - it isn't actually
swapping. Some people are looking for particular subjects or countries. I am
trying to get as many different UK ones - more below. But I also made the
mistake of being interested in the French sets. I think I must have picked up a
couple of thousand French lump wrappers and I am still trying to sort them out.
A few people bring a display of some interesting packets or some albums to show
what they have acquired recently. Occasionally we get visitors from outside the
UK but compared to the meetings that take place in Italy, France, Germany and
the like our meetings are small fry.
Next we have Robin Williams our Sugar Packet Caretaker. Robin is delighted if
members write to him because he has a bedroom full of the club stocks. If you
have particular interests he will try to help and in the past he has just sent
out a bundle of packets for people to sort through and return. Robin will bring
a good selection of the club stock to the exchange meeting and is happy not to
take it back with him.
Finally members get access to the members only area of the website. I set up a
database of UK sugar packets. It has just passed the 6,000 packets mark but
that is probably only the tip of the iceberg. We list all the sets we know
about and there are various set lists which can be downloaded and printed, or
just viewed on screen. The last 10 or so newsletters can also be downloaded and
all the packets that have featured in the New Finds section (about 1,300) are
shown.
If you are interested I have my personal non-UK packets on my own website
<www.phiweb.net> including as many of the French packets as I have processed.
But, I have a lot more to work through.
I hope all this is of some help. Membership of the Club is £12 usually renewed
in April so now is the ideal time to join. You can pay online or download a
form. The exchange meeting is Saturday 9th October - again details are on the
main part of the website.
