Tour the Starkweather Conservancy
with retired Parks Dept superintendent Si Widstrand
Saturday April 14 at 9 AM.

Meet in the parking lot at the Marsh View Bike Path (361 Blettner Blvd. - north of the Main Post Office).

This property was formerly known as the Blettner family property. It is between Hwy 30 and Milwaukee St,  north and east of the Voit property, northwest of Metro East Transfer Station.  It contains a mature oak island on what appears to be a gravel morainal structure surrounded by wetland, remnant sedge meadow, desiccated wetlands, channelized stormwater flow from approximately 750 upland acres, a new bike trail and bridge, springs and seeps, and several stormwater ponds with associated wetlands. It has been home to nesting sandhill crane for several years, red fox in adjacent upland slopes, and numerous other species.

It offers a wonderful opportunity for restoration and enhancement by volunteers...
welcoming your suggestions and contributions.

Subject: Montana High School Superintendent and Principal openings

Hi.  I found this email address while searching for places to get the word out about our openings for a high school Superinttendent and Principal.  I apologize in advance if this is something totally not of interest to you!

We are a small high school located in the Rocky Mountains of southwest Montana.  Finding experienced and inspiring leaders for these two positions is our first challenge.

Both positions are open because we are ending a period of having only one administrator in favor of returning to a two-administrator team.  Last year, we explored adding an assistant principal but the board worked through this year to find funding to establish a full principal position along with the superintendent.  Details are below.  Our options for salary are limited but we have tentatively identified around $65K plus benefits for the principal position and around $80K plus benefits for the superintendent position.  Not sure how competitive these will be nationally but they are competitive for our size school in Montana.  If we are as successful at the high school over the next years as we have been at the elementary, these will both be career-building opportunities.

If you know of anyone that would be a good candidate please let them know.  If you have any ideas for me on getting the word out, I would love to hear them.

Thank you for your help!

Sabrina Steketee, Trustee, Jefferson High School, Boulder, Montana

Montana High School Superintendent and Principal Openings

Jefferson High School, Boulder, Montana seeks Superintendent and Principal candidates.

JHS is a single high school district of about 215 students.  Current strategic planning has affirmed the board of trustee's commitment to provide the supports needed to place JHS at the forefront of secondary education in Montana and in the top 20% of high schools by any academic measure.  As part of that commitment, both superintendent and principal positions are open as we return to staffing two positions after several years of staffing a single administrator.

Positions require current Montana superintendent or principal licensure or eligibility for certification through the state internship program as well as secondary teacher certification in subjects  of need within the high school (currently counseling and art, also  math or reading program improvement development).  In order to staff two administrative positions, the district intends that each position will include 1/4 time teaching or other duties.  The district may consider part-time candidates in lieu of the 1/4 time duties.

Ideal candidates will be motivational instructional leaders adept at influencing teaching and learning by building strong instructional programs, supporting staff through solid training and structure, and by championing the strength and potential of all students and families.  Demonstrated leadership or high degree of participation in successfully implementing significant school-wide academic improvement is desired.

Four high-performing elementary school districts feed the high school district.  Administration in those districts have led the way in successfully implementing programs such as RTI, curriculum mapping, Quantum Learning and Understanding by Design and provide a network of support for bringing same or similar efforts to the high school.

JHS sits in a high Rocky Mountains valley near the Continental Divide in Boulder, Montana.  The Boulder river is described as one of the "best undiscovered trout streams" in Montana. An abundance of state and federal property provide access to fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, biking, snowmobiling and skiing.  The area is rural but is in close proximity to the state capitol and the larger cities in SW Montana.

Although no one becomes an educator for the money, and no one lives in Montana for the high wages, it is the district's intention to attract the best possible candidates and provide a competitive salary and benefits package to the greatest extent possible.  All candidates are encouraged to apply with salary and benefits to be determined.

For more information and an application packet for either position, please contact Sabrina Steketee via email at sabrina@....  Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.

For those interested in exploring novel ways of working with nature (e.g. for healing both environment and humanity), I will facilitate a short discussion (15-30 minutes) after Si finishes the walking tour. Examples of such ways are here, here, here, here, and attached.

I will go much deeper into such possibilities (beyond talk) on a sunrise to sunset Earth Day walk (Sun. April 22) from Olbrich to Picnic Point... inviting gifted earth healers, shamans, and energy workers to share and facilitate.

Photographer Tom Jones's Encountering Cultures series captures the Rendezvous, historical reenactments of the French fur trade in North America. This subculture has utilized and adopted the material culture of Native Americans, often posing and presenting themselves dressed as Indians. Through turning the camera lens back on these reenactors, Jones explores their romanticization of Native American life. The exhibition includes a group of related vintage photographs from Jones's personal collection (tomjoneshochunk.com).

Tom Jones

An assistant professor of photography at UW–Madison, Tom Jones’s work may be found in the National Museum of the American Indian and the Chazen Museum of Art. Jones’s Ho Chunk identity is central to his work as an artist. Keenly aware of photography’s role in shaping white culture’s perception of “Indian-ness,” he uses his own camera to offer a perspective from within the Ho Chunk community. His subjects include the lives of contemporary Ho Chunk, Indian imagery at tourist destinations in the Wisconsin Dells, and enthusiasts who strive to reenact Indian life during the 18th-century French fur trade era. Jones’s most recent work uses plastic toy Indians to create abstract images that address “ the tensions and multiplicity of identity referents currently at play in the context of our perceived “post-race” country.”

Consider that those tactics which have been used in the War on Drugs may fare no better in a War on Carbon.  Specifically, attempts to curtail supply will fail if we do not simultaneously curtail DEMAND.

Granted, a police state on the order of North Korea could curtail demand among an unconvinced population.  But who wants that?

If we hope to endure as a self-governing people, we must become willing to govern our own emissions.  Therefore our goal should be to gain a voting majority of citizens who WANT to emit less – even if that means “giving up” some material comforts and luxuries.  After all, if the project of Climate Change mitigation is as important as we say it is, why should we apologize for demanding inconvenience or sacrifice?  THIS IS NO TIME TO BE TIMID!

In short, we need a mass conversion.  Which means we need many thousands of evangelists, shoe leather on the ground, going door-to-door just like the Mormons.  “Wet work” as they say in the military, albeit in this case killing off desire for the unsustainable.

And who might those evangelist/warriors be?  If not us, who?

We want to reconfigure how we use our transportation system. Right now, the paradigm is to make it larger and more elaborate. But we should be making it more profitable to not drive. that is, we should have work for our people where they live. They can either want to live where the work is, then leave those remote places for the retired and those in service to them, or put work back into our communities where we live.

Subject: April 20 Meeting of the Sustainability Meets Entrepreneurship Speaker Series, featuring John Wittmann, VP Sales, RES Manufacturing

Mark your calendars for Friday, April 20th, for John Wittmann, VP of Sales at RES Manufacturing.

John will talk about the reshoring of manufacturing, and the opportunities presented by the cleantech sector.  Whether we are talking about manufacturing wind turbines, electric cars, solar panels or trains, these are all jobs that can be brought back to WI. RES Manufacturing is identifying opportunities for reshoring jobs that have been lost overseas in the past, and he will talk about the opportunities that they have identified.

Thank you to Toni Sikes for her excellent presentation on the being a venture capitalist and how her role grew out of her experience as an entrepreneur.  Attendees were treated to a unique opportunity to spend time with one of the more accomplished entrepreneurs and venture capitalists in the state.

These presentations represent the breadth of the CleanTech Community Forum presentations.  We have been meeting for three years, providing an opportunity for the public to receive an "inside" look at what is happening within some of the state's most creative entrepreneurial efforts.

Please join us to hear John Wittmann on Friday, April 20th at noon.  We will meet in room 5120 of Grainger (975 University Ave in Madison).

Registration (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDVXNGhQdlhjU05hbU8tYlBDVFNVY2c6MQ) is requested so that I can make sure you get information about upcoming sessions.  The Friday session will conclude no later than 1:15.

John is the 6th and last speaker for the spring series.

I expect that we will again offer a speaker series over the summer at our usual time on Fridays at noon.  More information to follow.

We have been offering these community forums since spring of 2009. Additional information on the community forums is available here: http://ww.bus.wisc.edu/business-sustainability/classes/communityforum/

Dear Conservationists,

My name is Jacqui Sharpee and I am a current UW Madison student. For a semester project my group and I are working on having a canvas campaign to save Dane County's lakes. We would greatly appreciate if you, your organization, or your volunteers would be willing to assist us with our goal of making a difference in the community. Below you will find the invitation which lists all of the details. Please spread the word!

Thanks!

Volunteers needed for the 2012 Reclaim Our Lakes canvas campaign!

WHAT: In conjunction with Earth Day, Sustain Dane is hosting a Dane County canvas campaign that draws awareness to urban source lake runoff. We are looking for volunteers to distribute informational materials to private households.

WHY: To inform Dane County residents how their household contributes to lake pollution, and what small & easy steps they can take to reduce their negative impact.

WHEN & WHERE: Join a brief training session on Saturday, April 21st at 9 a.m. at 1170 Grainger to pick up the materials and secure a residential location to target. You will be performing the canvas at your own convenience from April 21-28.

Please join us for a very special screening of the film Green Fire at the Monona Public Library on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at 6:00 pm in the Media/Community Room.

Green Fire is the first feature length documentary film ever made about famed conservationist Aldo Leopold. Emmy-Award winning narrator Peter Coyote lends his talent as the voice of Aldo Leopold, and the film's on-screen guide is Curt Meine, Leopold's biographer. The film explores Aldo Leopold's life in the early part of the twentieth century and the many ways his land ethic idea continues to be applied all over the world today.

Enjoy fantastic free treats from Whole Foods, giveaways, a short discussion led by an Aldo Leopold Foundation Land Ethic Leader, and a few other surprises, in honor of Earth Week and one man's vision on how we use and interact with the land.

You can register online through the Monona Library. The film is 72 minutes long. The Monona Public Library is at 1000 Nichols Road.

Bring your teenagers with you! Lets spark the conservation conversation!

Earth Day is approaching!  Do your part to clean up Madison’s lakes.

Sustain Dane has been working with four University of Wisconsin students on a marketing and management project for a “team management” course. These students are excited about promoting lake cleanup—and have produced materials instructing residents on simple measures we each can take to help out. To get the word out, they also are organizing neighborhood canvases.

It is a great way to help reduce waste runoff.  If you can help these students get out the word, these efforts can have far-reaching effects—and also encourage these students to continue their interest in civic engagement.

WHEN & WHERE:  Join a brief training session on Saturday, April 21st at 9 a.m. in 1170 Grainger Hall to pick up the materials and secure a residential location to target.   You will be performing the canvas at your own convenience from April 21-28.

The annual Earth Day clean-up of Starkweather Creek will commence Sat. April 21 at 9AM...
meeting at Olbrich boat landing next to the Thai Pavilion.
Most clean-up will be done from canoes, some by land.

This has been a very eye-opening and fulfilling experience for me in past years...
experiencing an almost wilderness experience in an urban setting...
while removing urban trash.
Last year's report and photos here.

This watershed covers a surprisingly large portion of Madison's east side (map here)...
with a surprisingly large amount of green space (including many restored areas and trails).
Many opportunities exist for further restoration and enhancement (volunteers and city).

From a news release issued by RENEW Wisconsin.

Renewable Energy Touted for Value on Earth Day

The price consumers pay for energy fails to account for the value of environmental improvement, energy diversity, and economic development, said Don Wichert, RENEW Wisconsin’s executive director, at an Earth Day information event at Wisconsin’s Capitol.

“In the case of solar energy, for example, this energy source offers the value proposition of very low or no air emissions, uses the energy available at the site, and keeps the energy dollars circulating through the local economy,” said Wichert.

Wichert compared renewable power to the value people pay for when choosing various vehicle transportation modes. Each takes you from one spot to another, but some offer more value that people are willing to pay for.

“Fossil based energy, in contrast, produces five to ten times more lifecycle green house gases, is dug out from the earth thousands of miles away from Wisconsin, and the majority of the money paid for this energy leaves the state,” Wichert said.

A recent survey of undecided Wisconsin voters showed that nearly 90% supported solar, wind, and hydro power as their preferred energy sources, according to Wichert.  “With thousands of examples of small distributed renewable energy applications in Wisconsin, as well as 12 wind farms, it’s clear that renewable energy works and has huge potential for the Badger state.”

All of the Earth Day presentations for “Wisconsin Climate Change and Jobs Forum, Challenges and Solutions”uHHH can be seen on the Capitol Eye network at Capitol Eye Earth Day Forum.  His presentation is available at renewwisconsinblog.org.

Clean Sweep Household Hazardous Waste Site 2012 Summer Hours Start on Tuesday May 1st

A Time and Place to Protect our Environment

Madison WI, April 20, 2012 – Do you have a few boxes of old pesticides or paint thinners that have been sitting in your garage for a long time?  If your spring cleaning chores include getting rid of these items, bring them to Clean Sweep. The Clean Sweep Program for recycling household hazardous waste will start its 2012 summer hours on Tuesday, May 1st, 2012.

“Clean Sweep is a popular program that helps keep hazardous materials out of our environment and extends the life of our landfill,” said Dane County Executive Joe Parisi.  “And the county is looking forward to breaking ground this summer on a facility that will enable Clean Sweep to operate year round, making it even more convenient for citizens.”

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin added, “Clean Sweep provides a great opportunity to not only assist with spring cleaning but to keep hazardous material out of our landfills. As we celebrate Earth Day this weekend this reminder is even more timely.”

·         Summer hours of operation are on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

·         The site is located on 2302 Fish Hatchery Road in Madison, on the corner of Fish Hatchery and Badger Roads, behind the Dane County Highway Garage Building on the north end of the property.

    • Due to a redesign/reconstruction of Fish Hatchery Road, please use the Badger Road entrance.

·         The last day of the summer season will be Saturday, October 31st 2012.

·         Leaving materials at the site when it is closed is illegal and can lead to a $2000 fine.

The Clean Sweep Program provides an opportunity for residents of Dane County to safely dispose of household hazardous materials, free of charge. The Product Exchange offers high quality and usable products brought to Clean Sweep by members of the public and offered free of charge.

The Small Business Collection Program accepts materials from small businesses and local units of government. These materials are accepted by appointment only Tuesday through Saturday mornings throughout the year.  Prior arrangements need to be made before bringing materials to the site, and there is a per pound charge for materials brought to the site. Business owners are reminded that they need to allow enough time to request registration materials and to submit an inventory of the materials for recycling. Registration is available on our web site at www.danecountycleansweep.com or by calling Dave Radisewitz, the Clean Sweep Coordinator, at (608) 243-0347.

Clean Sweep will also accept agriculturally-generated wastes. A Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection grant underwrites the disposal costs so there is no cost to farmers, and agricultural businesses only pay half the normal business rate. All farmers and agricultural-related businesses from Dane County are invited to participate.  Agricultural Clean Sweep Program participation is by appointment only, Tuesday through Saturday mornings throughout the year.

For more information on Clean Sweep programs, please refer to our web site at www.danecountycleansweep.com, or call our information line at (608) 243-0368. Let us help you to keep Madison and Dane County´s environment clean and healthy.
