I have a friend that said if I sub-contract out
all the work to build a pool myself, I could build a
pool in my yard for about half of what a pool company
would charge. Does anyone know how I can find the
different contractors to do this.
I am looking for healthier alternative to
chlorine, algaecide etc..
Everybody claims to have the
perfect product and I don't know what to choose.
Did
anybody try anything else than chemicals who could give
me feed back ?
Thanks
Please help me.

I have a deep purple
residue in my 24' round, vinyl lined, above ground
pool.

I use a Hayward DE filter, Pace 3" pucks, and all
water levels test ok in analysis.

It all started
2 years ago. This is the third season, and it's the
worst yet.

According to several "pool experts"
it's not an algea (I'm told there is no purple
algea).

It's a brilliant purple residue, that coats the entire
liner, sides included.

If you aggressively
vacuum and brush vigorously you can get most of it
off....... it kind of "dusts" away.

However some of
the more stubborn areas have been permanent
stained.

I've tried everything I can think of, I'm ready to
drain, replace the liner, refill, replace all plumbing
(I've got it "hardlined" with PVC pipe) and sterilize
my filter.

Can someone please tell me what
this stuff is, and save me all the
trouble.

Thanks,
Dave
dave_injersey@...
I've just finished installing a 24' round above
the ground pool, and it was hard work.I dug the hole
by hand,I live on a hilly terrain and there were
lots of boulders.I then built a 14ft by 6ft deck,I
used some plan I found on the net and changed it a
bit.I bought some Trex decking for the top,a bit
expensive but worth it.Trex is recycled plastic mixed with
wood chips and some silicone,it looks like cedar
wood,no slivers.I did all this over a period of 6
months.I could not get any help from the pool store. The
liner was the hardest part,I had to reinstall it three
times.I only had one inch of liner to fold over the edge
and the walls kept buckling,I had to keep raising the
cove to get it to seat right.Well anyway it is all
done.I'm still learning how to take care of it,so I'll be
around.
Have you considered using a salt-generator?? It turns salt into chlorine
automatically. Or perhaps you could try using an ozonator; however, you will
still require oxidizing (shock) and algicide.
GOOD LUCK!!!
I own a pool store and have to
hire out-of-town pool companies to install for me. I
don't have the time to do it, and all local
contractor's are about 4 to 5 times higher in price. A pool
dealer can install in three days. A home owner can do it
themselves in about 2 weeks. It works out to a BIG saving
for you. It's not brain-surgery, but it is
time-consuming. Almost ANY backhoe operator can dig the specs for
you.

I just rebuilt my pool & installed a main drain,
what do I have to do to winterize it, I know that I
obviously can't blow out the line and add anti-freeze like
the other lines. Any help on this would be welcome.
I heard a friend of mine say that his father use
copper sulphite in his pool, it is what the agriculture
industry has used for years in water sources. unfortunatly
you must possess and ag. permit to buy it.
Booster pump is needed if you plan on having an
Polaris pool cleaner. It was worth it for me. Also, if
you add a pool fountain to cool the water in the heat
of the summer, it's a must. I recommend the Polaris
simply because you can put it on for a few hours a day
and forget about it. Brush the steps daily and the
sides as needed. Keep the pH and Cl at good levels and
you'll be good to go. Hope this helps. I don't know
squat about Haward pool cleaners sorry.
I know its kind of late but most main drains are
ok during the winter without blowing them out. They
are easy to blow if you put a union at the pump. Two
ways you can do it...1) is to buy a blowout plug ( a
tapered rubber plug with a valve that resembles a bycicle
tube valve, and use a compressor to blow it out and
when you see the bubbles come from the drain, your all
set. 2)is to have a rubber plug ready and blow the
line out with a vaccume or blower and plug it fast. No
antifreeze is needed but you may pour a gallon in the line
b4 blowing it if it gives you peace of mind.
I beg to differ about the Polaris Pool Cleaner. I
find it to be crap as all it does is pick up the big
stuff and blows everything around the pool for the
other intakes to pick up. They also use more
electricity to operate and they break down all the time. The
tiniest partical for dirt in the polaris ports inside its
body will stop its operation not to mention the pump
is crap also. I personally recomend the Kreepy
Crawler. It runs off your existing system and swollows up
everything in its path. And thats not to mention that its
alot cheeper to purchase also and there is only one
moving part. Any homeowner can install it too.
Oh yes...I forgot to mention.....Polaris does
have a model that does not require a booster pup but I
dont recomend them. You must be able to restrict the
flow to one return and even then, they do not work to
well unless you have a 1.5 hp pump or better and you
must keep your filter working at its best. That means
clean!!!! Do not buy one unless you have an above ground
but even then.....a Kreepy crawler is best.
Hello all, new member.

About a week ago my
mom moved to a new house. The house had a pool, that
had been unattended for 6 months. the pool was a
green goo when I strated on it. Since many shocks,
fighting the pump, and cleaning the filter about a million
times. I have the water clear, with mountains of dead
white algae at the bottom. My basic basic problem is
the following: the pump has suction but the out-flow
is weak. How might a get the pump running again? Any
suggestions are greatly appreciated.
bobby321us, I absoultly agree with you on the
Kreepy Crawler. I simply love mine, We accually leave it
in a good 60% of the season, Only taking it out for
swimmers. Now we doent even hand sweep it at the beginning
of the season, We just toss the Kreepy crawler in
and let it suck up. We have NEVER had a problem with
it, it was a great buy
Did you know that if you have an in-ground pool,
pond or well, you can use these bodies of water to
dramatically reduce your home air conditioning and heating
bills?
A new alternative energy company has come

Howdy, I am a new member. We bought a 1374 gallon
above ground pool, and are having trouble trying to
figure out the correct way to shock and treat it. Most
shock treatments are for 10,000 + gallon pools, and the
closest treatment to this size are for kiddie pools.( Our
pool is larger than a kiddie pool.) Any suggestion
would be most welcomed. Thanks!
I think you could get away buying liquid shock at a Walmart or a store like it
in one gallon jugs. Then just go with the instructions, a one gallon jug may
last you a while.
Hi All :

I have a 24 foot round above
ground pool. Since I live in the northeast part of the
country I dont get much use of my pool. I was hoping to
expand my usage by putting in these solar powered
heaters I have seen in magazines. Does anyone know if
they work ?? The ads claim to warm the water
temperature by 10 degrees faranheit. Anyone have any
experience with them ?? They cost between 250 and 350
dollars, but there is no extra cost for gas or electric or
anything like that. Also if anyone has had any experience
with these heaters, are any brands better than others
??
Thanks in advance, any help would be greatly appreciated
I don't have one, but I know several people who
have

a) the solar system that you lay out on
the lawn or in a sunny place.
b) the system that
(is more than $350, but not 100% sure of total cost)
where the panels are located on the roof.

Option (a) my friend says he only see's a 2-4 degree
difference. Now, for some... that is good. The other issue he
has is location. He does not get sun 100% of the day
in the spot he positions it.

My other friend
(option b) does see difference upwards of 8-10 degree's,
but like I said, I don't believe that system is
cheap. I, too, life in the NE, and have considered the
same thing. If you decide and install one, please come
back and let us know how you make out. I would be
interested.

Regards,
Dan
hi there i have a 18 round above ground pool, it
holds about 4400 gallons of water (something like that)
anyway, this is the second year. I didn't have any
trouble last year, but this year seems I am constantly
fighting the water..
I can never get it to really clear
up..i have tried granular chlorine, and those big
Caplet chlorines (in a floater)..i have tried algaside,
clarifiers and of course I keep check on my alkalinity and
plus/minus ph levels..when i use the stick tester it says
everything is in the right color areas, but yet the water is
hazzy and everytime my kids kick or stir up the water
it bubbles or foams...
do i need a defoamer?? do
i need yellow rid?? what do i need???
i am about
ready to scream...
missy di
me again,
we have had alot of rain lately,
should i be shocking my pool after every rain storm, or
once a day after several rain showers, or just still
once a week???

right now i am shocking once a
week and i don't know if i am shocking
enough???
also, i want that crisp sparkling water look
help me
please
missy di
Hi :

First off, Im not an expert but I
think I might have more experience than you so I hope I
can be of some help.

This is the formula to
figure your water amount. (you have much more than 4400
gallons) For a round pool it is Diameter x Diameter x
Average Depth x 7.5. Im going to assume your pool is the
standard 4 ft high.
18 (round) x 18 = 324 x 4 (ave
hight) = 1296 x 7.5 = 9720. 9720 gallons of water are in
your pool. If your pool is not 4 ft high than you must
figure on the difference.

As for the rain this
year, well you sound like I did last year, we (IN New
York) had a terrible summer of 2000. I didnt get my
pool in great shape until September and by then it was
too late. The guy at my local pool supply store told
me my "Calcium" level was too low. it was about 160
and I raised it to about 210. Calcium hardens the
water and allows the water to hold the chemicals
better. In other words the chlorine wont be "eaten up" as
quickly by the rain and sun. If your calcium is at the
low end of the scale you might want to try raising it
a bit. It is one of the more expensive chemicals
though. I think it cost me about 30 dollars to raise it
50ppm.
I have had a pool for 6 years now and have
learned that if you ask 100 people the same question you
get 100 different answers. Trial and error has been
the way to go for me. Once I reached my 3rd summer I
was pretty good at keeping my water in great
condition without overspending on chemicals.Go to your
local pool supply store and let them test your water,
maybe they can find something you have thought about.
Although I have never tried it (and I dont know if it is
available in your area) my brother absolutely SWEARS by a
chlorine called BACQUACIL. It is an expensive product but
its potency allows you to use much less of it. Im
sorry I have never had the "bubble or foam" problems so
I cant comment on that.
Have you backwashed
your filter ?? With the lots of rain did you take your
filter apart and hose off the cartridge / "fingers" ???
Have you changed the "earth" ?? That can have a major
effect as well. If you have a "sand" filter Im the wrong
guy to ask since I know nothing about
them.

Thats about all I can think of right now. Good Luck and
happy swimming. John
