Hi Karen, My son thought the sandstorm was "pretty cool." It's his
first deployment, and it was his first sandstorm. I imagine they get
old after awhile! Susan

That was some great pictures than you for sharing. It also made me
think of my son's allergy. The last time I talked he said that the
medicine they give doesn't even work.

I am going to machine embroider a bunch of the pocket pieces.
What do I do with them when I'm finished. Can I put them in the same
box to send with the cool ties I am making?
Thanks Marlene

***Note from K@ren, Absolutely, that would be great. Just enclose them all in a
baggie or envelope with a note asking the receiver to lay them out in the common
area so that anyone interested in having one can take one. They may carry them
for themselves, they might mail it home for a loved one, I'm sure that they will
be inventive on how they are distributed and used.

How kind of you to remember our service people in this way.

For those embroiders out there---This is the easiest way I have found
to do these. I use the large Hoop-It-All hoop with an self adhesive
backing on the frame. On the adhesive I have a layer of felt.
Underneath I use a tearaway stabilizer. Embroider all but the outline
circle, then add a piece of cutaway stabilizer under the hoop and do
the circle. I do 10 pieces in this hoop at a time. The hardest part is
cuuting out the pieces. Hope this helps someone.

We will be having a Group Hug in North Hollywood on Saturday, August
20th. We will be making Hugs, maybe some Kisses, having lunch and
generally getting to know one another face to face.
Karen and Ray, our founders and mentors, will be there and I know you
would like a chance to meet them.
Please email me privately if you will be attending - we are trying to
do an initial head-count! Thanks!

Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself. I do belong to the hugs site
so
I know many of you are on both sites and have heard about me already.
I have a son that is in the Army in the stryker brigade and will be
deployed in August for the sandbox. I am having a very hard time with
it all but when I talk to him on the phone I am always bright and
cheery (then usually crying when I get off the phone).

I own my own embroidery shop and trying to keep very busy so I have
less time to think. Well, now that I found you guys I can keep extra
busy.

Looking foward to getting to know all of you.

Hi Sharon,

I too am a member of the hugs project. I don't think
too many people post here on the annex. It seems to
be a spill over from the main site where the patterns
are posted. Don't get too discouraged from no
response here. Just go to the main site.

Stryker brigade - is that out of Fort Lewis, WA? I
live in Everett and right now I send things to a
Chaplain from Fort Lewis. They are supposed to leave
November 1.

Ok, I'm not military. I am married to a former
Vietnam Marine. Two of my brothers were in the
military, one Army, one Air Force. My daughter's
long-term boyfriend is in the Air Force. [I call him
her long-term boyfriend because even though he says he
wants to get married he doesn't seem any closer to it
now than he was just after he joined almost two years
ago.] Time will tell.

I just wanted to "pop in" & welcome you to this part
of the "hugs" project, too, Sharon! I'm sorry my
intro. on the main site was a bit hurried, but the
"traffic" has definitely picked up there (which is a
Very good thing! :)), so I always seem to be playing
catch up these days.

I did notice Nancy's response here, though, and I
definitely noticed your mention of the Stryker
Brigade...XXX- EDITED FOR OPSEC-XXX. Like Nancy, I also live
pretty close to Ft. Lewis (My father retired out of
there, so that's how I ended up in WA), so if there's
anything we can do for your son and his unit before
they leave...and most definitely after they arrive
"over there"...please just let us know.

Also, if you'd like me to get some "hugs", etc. to him
in the next couple weeks, please just let me know. I
can't go on post (by myself) anymore (no longer have a
military ID card), but my parents still go pretty
"regularly" & they've made deployment related
"deliveries" for me before...Soooooo, please just let
me know.

All for now, but please take good care of yourself,
Sharon & know we're keeping you & yours very close in
our thoughts and prayers!

Hi Nancy, I also belong to the Hugs site.  I write to a young man who is in a Stryker unit (xxx-edited for opsec-xxx).  I don't know what the name of the base is.  (xxx-edited for opsec-xxx).  I don't know if this answers your question but from what I understand, there are not many Stryker Units.

Hi All!
While this group is very small, and hopefully, secure, the info
being posted here concerns me. Sharing this info with each other is
NOT a problem, but POSTING this kind of info to an Internet site
greatly increases the risk that undesirable persons will see the
info and use it against our troops.

If you discuss the same things in private emails to each other, the
risk of exposing troop movements is greatly reduced. However,
posting it to this site means that it is now on the archives for
anyone to see. While we do our best to insure that the members here
are NOT involved with terrorists, I know that the security forces in
England also did their best to insure their mass transit systems
were secure.

The info that scares me is: troop movements (e.g., coming home
August 1 or deploying September 1); specific unit names and
locations with their deployment or return dates; troop locations
(Camp Yada Yada Yada, etc). Our desire, first and foremost, as I
know it is with you, is to keep them safe.

My son is deployed. He has repeatedly warned me NOT to share this
kind of info with my "marine mom friends on the Internet - "Don't
post locations Mom". He knows we share info among each other, he
just specifically said his CO has asked them to keep their moms from
posting on the Internet.

To insure your message goes only to the person intended, check
the "To" address and be sure it shows the address of the person, not
the address of the group. I know these can sometimes "catch" you as
it happens to me too.

Thank you for your understanding,
Cheryl

Hi, Cheryl & All!

Just wanted to let you know that you most definitely
have my completely understanding And sincere apologies
for my most recent posting to the Annex. Since I
didn't see it "show up" after a little while, I kinda
figured it was "rejected"...which it probably should
have been. <sigh> Thanks very much, though...to
whoever cleaned it up "a bit" for me! :)

Take care,

Sharon (in WA--who will try better to keep from
posting the "willy nilly" from now on...& Thanks
again!)

Hi, Sandy...

If you're thinking of the freecycle website (?),
please check out: www.freecycle.org ...Then select
your "Region", "State" & "City" from the lists that
"drop down".

There's also "craigslist" (www.craigslist.com) &
"almost freecycle" (I've never looked at that one, but
Karen has the address and/or I guess if you type that
into a search engine, information about the page will
come up).

Although I usually post my "requests" and search
through the "offers" of both freecyle & craigslist, I
have Much better luck with freecycle! :)

Hope this helps...

This site is primarily for discussion of our hand made items. We make
warm hats, neckwarmers, flat bears and other items.

Hats for service members need to be black but dark brown, camel and
other desert colors will probably work too for some groups. Children's
hats can be any color. Our soldiers carry small soft items in their
pockets to pass along to the little ones of the Middle East. Sometimes
making a friend of a child can save an American life.

There is also room here to post some pictures of your projects. We
love seeing what everyone is making for our troops. Please share.
