Hi Families,
Good luck to the team this Saturday.  We usually put together a potluck of sorts for the team in the stands.  Would love your support.  I'll bring a cooler & paper goods/serving ware.

Let me know what you'd like to bring.  Use your imagination, suggestions can include:

bagels
energy bars
baked goods
gatorade
water
fruit
snacks
trail mix

Thanks and GO TL!  Cara

Parents and wrestlers,

Here are a few notes for tomorrow and for MCALs this Saturday:

1. If you will not be competing in MCALs please bring your singlet and headgear to practice tomorrow to turn them in for the season.
2. We will be doing the money bag tomorrow so anyone not at practice will be donating their pull to the team.
3. MCALs are this Saturday at Drake.  We will be leaving TL at 7:15 AM.  Weigh-ins are at 8, wrestling starts at 9:30.
4. I know that we are sick and beat up from this long season, but we have to rally up for MCALs for our goal of being undisputed MCAL Champions.  A little stuffy nose is never fun, but we have to wrestle through it.  Without everyone in the line up, we will have a hard time keeping the pennant and not having to share it.  If anyone has a skin issue you will need a last minute appointment and this form filled out: http://cifncs.org/sports/wrestling/files/Physician_release_for_wrestlers.pdf.  This was sent out earlier this season, but just in case you need it again, here it is.

Saturday should be fun!  Can't wait to see you all there.

Yours in wrestling,

Danny Dardon

Wrestlers,

One last comment and thought before I am out for the evening.  I echo Coach Kaveh's remarks that I am very to be a part of TL Wrestling.  I have received calls from Dr. Kakaleas to alumni of the last decade of how proud we are to be Trojans Wrestlers!  It's been a tough year, but we have proved to the league that we are champions because we deserve it not because we are entitled.  As league rep I have received comments on our prowess as a team and even moreso as a league.  Not to mention your coaching staff endures the hardship of being off campus coaches, and a young one at that, from Tommy and Ian to Kaveh and even Shane and Morgan.  We are unique in that we are all alumni and loyal to the Trojans.  We have come together as a family and community (as shown from supporters at MCALs from the last several years with athletes graduated) and have proven that we will not be defeated.  We have a legacy to upold next weekend that demostrates our champion attitude.  With 10 representatives from our home, our goals are to continue to prove our dominance as wrestlers, not dominance as MCAL affiliates.  May we show the North Coast Section our mindset of indefatigable character and uphold the spirit of the sport.

Keep your heads up, elbows in, and hands out,

Danny Dardon

Hello Terra Linda Wrestlers,

First off, I want to congratulate all of you on an excellent season.  We won the MCAL Championships with a very young team against tough competition.  I do not ever remember MCAL's sending 5 wrestlers to the state championships...  After that, we had two NCS finalists, each of whom wrestled competitively at State (excellent job Erik & Roman).

I have had many of you come and approach me about off season weight training.  I am excited about your enthusiasm and love that you are already thinking about how to improve for next year.  At this point, I honestly think it is best to allow your bodies another 1-2 weeks to rest and recover from a long season.  Shoulders & knees are fatigued, and some good rest will do you all great.

I will be in touch with you in the next few weeks, at which point I will set up a time where we can get together and talk about how best to train in the weight room during the off season this year.

Congratulations once again, and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Thanks,
Kaveh

TL Trojans,

It's now been a few weeks since our last teammates have completed there season and some of you are well into your spring sports.  I would like to take this oppurtunity to congratulate Erick and Roman for each going 2-2 at state and finishing in the top 24 in California!  That is something never done by a pair of TL wrestlers in the history of the school as far as I know.  Additionally hats off to Roman for unanimously being voted by the MCAL coaches the Ralph Cutler award for the league's best wrestler.

Please keep your eyes posted on your emails for information about off season workouts.  Most of you receive emails from Coach Feder and the Brawlers Club who will be starting soon.  If you want that information, please contact me.

Also, though emails have been sent out, I want to remind everyone of the banquet on 4/3.  I want to see EVERYONE there.  We can offer some scholarships if anyone cannot attend due to the cost, so that is not an excuse.  Please shoot me an email if this is the case. We had another successful year and EVERYONE should be there to celebrate.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Good Morning Terra Linda Wrestlers,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner; I know that many of you are excited to start an off-season weight training program.  I plan on having a chat with you at the banquet on April 3, and will be wanting everyone to get rolling after that.  In the meantime, here is a little bit to get you started.

Make sure that you warm up properly before every workout (at least 5-7 minutes), and do your stretching after.  I want to emphasize how important it is to stretch properly to keep proper movement patterns.  Many wrestlers dismiss stretching as unimportant, and their wrestling performance suffers for it, in addition to increasing the likelihood of injury.

I want you to do a core warmup as well before lifting, it will allow you to lift stronger and with better form.  Planks are great, and REALLY concentrate on holding proper form; don't just do the exercise to do the exercise, if you know what I mean.  An exercise with incorrect form can do as much harm as good to your body.  I will spend some more time working on core exercises with you, as it is an area where you can all improve tremendously.

For the next 2-4 weeks, try to lift three times per week, and each of those times should be a full body workout.  That will change as you progress, but is the proper way to start a heavy lifting routine.  I know that many of you are probably thinking about doing 'chest/tricep days', 'leg days', etc.  There is a time for that, but it is not the best way to get started.

For the next few weeks, we are also going to concentrate on hitting your big muscles, which are mainly your chest, back, shoulders, glutes, quads, & hamstrings.  We will move out to the extremities (arms, calves, etc) as you progress with your routine.  Good shoulder exercises are any type of shoulder press/upright rows, good chest exercises are any bench/incline/decline press/pushups, and good back exercises are pullups, flat, & bent over rows.  For your legs, leg presses, lunges & good mornings will be good to get you started.  I want you to be careful about doing heavy squats at this point; I will be going over proper form (which is obviously very important) before we go too far into that.  We can also get into more full-body lifts (cleans, deadlifts, etc.) later on in your routine.

An example of a good full body routine for now would be:

5-7 minute warm up
2 minutes of planks & 30-45 seconds of side planks
3-4 sets (each exercise) of leg press, lunges & good mornings
a hard set of abs (whatever you want; you should all know some good exercises)
3-4 sets (each exercise) of bench press, lat pulldowns, shoulder press

Each exercise should be done 12-10-8-6 reps (a smaller amount and little bit heavier with each progressive set), and if you are not struggling with the last rep of each set, then you should be bumping up the weights a bit.  You can finish the workout strong by doing a maximum set (each) of pull-ups, then push-ups, then 90 degree wall sit.  After that, a good stretch.

I want you all to be able to do 10 pullups by the time season starts.

That whole routine should take you an hour or so.  I want you to do the exercises in a circuit fashion, so that while working upper body, you do one exercise to the next.  I don't want you taking more than a 45 second-1 minute rest at any point in the workout.  You can also switch between dumbells and barbells each time you workout.  This will be good to get you started; we will be moving forward quite a bit from there.

I also want each of you to think about what your goals for the off-season are as far as weight lifting, as this will dictate how you train.  For example, a heavyweight who wants to get large will be lifting very differently from someone who is looking to lose a few pounds and tone up.  I also want each of you to be thinking realistically how often you will be able to lift each week.  I would like to see everyone lifting a minimum of twice a week (once a week just doesn't do much), and a person who will be lifting 4+ times a week will need to be put on a different program as well.  We can discuss these items on an individual basis at & after the banquet.  The above circuit, 2-3 times per week, will be good to get you all started either way.  Once again, please remember this is just to get started; we will be going into this a whole lot more in the near future.

Also, a few of you have asked me about supplementation.  I don't personally think supplements are at all necessary, and don't generally recommend them.  Protein powder is great, and multi-vitamins are great, and other than that, eat right, exercise hard, and you will get where you want to go.  As for protein powder, whey protein is great, and eating it with a multi-vitamin is good as that helps your body absorb it better.  Costco sells a good protein powder that is SUPER affordable ($25 or so for 6 lbs), and as good as anything else you would get.   Don't get caught up on paying tons of money for a brand name protein powder, as it really doesn't matter much.

Thanks, and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

-Kaveh

Coaches,

Kevin Stanley, former UC Davis assistant coach and NCAA All American wrestler at Indiana, will hold a two day clinic on July 7 & 8, at Novato High School, from 10:00am-3:00pm.  The clinic fee will be $60 if postmarked before June 15, and $75 after.

Kevin held a series of clinics for us last year. He's an excellent technician and very systematic in his instruction.  Dylan Morris continues to benefit from several of the techniques that Kevin taught him.

For this clinic, he'll focus primarily on the front headlock from neutral position, and from bottom position a knee slide/knee dip/changeover series.  One or two other areas of interest to participants may be covered as well if desired.  From neutral, Kevin has a very good pass-by.

Here's a little more information about Kevin's impressive resume:
http://www.idsnews.com/news/story.aspx?id=15243&search=NCAA&section=search

Our target size for this clinic is about 20 kids, allowing a small scale, hands on clinic with personal attention.  In my experience, this type of small scale setting leads to better learning than large camps.  I've seen Kevin instructing at many clinics over the last three years, and he is very effective.

Please pass this information to any of your wrestlers that you think would be interested.

Alan Morris

Hi Wrestling Community -
See below for a high school level camp starting this Friday.  Please get in touch with Alan Morris if you're interested.

Also, there is a beginning camp the week of June 20 if you know of anyone thinking they might want to see what it's all about.  Please share the wrestling love.

http://www.marinlearn.com

Have a great summer!  Cara

The Faultline Wrestling Camp at Redwood H.S. starts this week.  We'll be meeting on Friday, Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday, from 10:00am-3:00pm each day.  We're very excited to have coach Clint Birch from Vacaville as our clinician; he's high energy, has some great techniques to show, and coached his own team to a state championship in 2007, and 10th place last year.

Please bring a signed copy of the attached registration form.  If you've already made arrangements for the camp fee, great.  If not, checks can be brought the first day.

Also, please bring a lunch, three extra workout shirts, a bottle of water, and a notepad and pen.

If you have any questions, please give me a call.

God Morning Terra Linda Wrestlers,

I hope you are all doing well!

Beginning tomorrow, I will be opening the wrestling room/weight room at Terra Linda HS from 10:00-Noon every Friday for a chance to get some lifting in and to hold an open mat so that we can get some time wrestling as well.

It will be loosely structured, so each of you can come when you want, and go at your own pace, but it will be good practice and also a chance for us to go over some lifting techniques that I know many of you have been curious about.  It should be fun, and I hope to see you all there!  I plan on spending the first hour on the mat, and 11-Noon in the weight room.

Thanks,

Kaveh

Coaches,

I hope your summers are going well. There are a lot of off season options this
year, including a local clinic next week this coming Thur and Friday.

Kevin Stanley, former UC Davis assistant coach and NCAA All American wrestler at
Indiana, will hold a two day clinic on July 7 & 8, at Novato High School , from
10:00am-3:00pm. The clinic fee is $65.

Kevin held a series of clinics for us last year. He's an excellent technician
and very systematic in his instruction.

For this clinic, he'll focus on the front headlock position, both offense and
defense. Kevin has some effective variations on this common position. From
bottom position he'll show a knee slide/knee dip/changeover series. One or two
other areas of interest to participants will be covered as well. From neutral,
Kevin has a very good pass-by and knee pull.

Here's a little more information about Kevin's impressive resume:

http://www.idsnews.com/news/story.aspx?id=15243&search=NCAA§ion=search

Our target size for this clinic is about 20 kids, allowing a small scale, hands
on clinic with personal attention. In my experience, this type of small scale
setting leads to better learning than large camps. I've seen Kevin instructing
at many clinics over the last three years, and he is very effective.

Thanks,

Alan Morris

Good Morning Terra Linda Wrestlers,

I hope you all have a happy 4th of July!

I wanted to let you know that I will not be at Terra Linda to have an open mat this Friday, July 8 as there is a clinic happening that day that Coach Danny sent some information regarding last week.  I STRONGLY encourage all of you to go.  These clinics are extremely useful, and will help you get to the next level in your wrestling careers.

Open mat will resume next week (July 15).

Once again, I hope you all enjoy your holiday.

Thanks,

Good Morning Terra Linda Wrestlers,

I hope this email finds you all well.

Last Friday I made the drive to TL High School to open the wrestling and weight rooms, and alas, not a single person showed up.

As much as I would love to keep coming to Terra Linda to open the wrestling room on Fridays, I am not interested in driving 30 miles to Terra Linda and taking time off work to open the mats when none of you show up.  I want to thank Dimitri, Kai, and James for showing up regularly, and letting me know when they wouldn't be able to make it.  I had hoped and expected to see a few more of you out there, but I guess you were not able to make time for it.

If you would like me to open the room tomorrow, please let me know that some of you will be coming and I will be happy to do so.  If I get 5 RSVP's, I will be there on Friday at 10:00 AM as usual.  Otherwise, as I mentioned, I do not want to make the drive down there just to turn around and come back to San Francisco.

Please let me know if any of you will be coming, and I will respond to confirm if I will be making it if I get enough replies.  Thanks, once again, to those of you who have kept me up-to-date with your planning and anticipated attendance.

Thanks,
Kaveh
