Subject: GRE General Test Change in Pattern
prepedge
Send Email Send Email

Hi

ETS will be making the following significant changes to the GRE General Test. The changes are likely to be implemented from September 2007.

The New Verbal Reasoning Section

  • Measure of ability to analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it, analyze relationships among component parts of sentences, and recognize relationships between words and concepts in context
  • Emphasis on skills related to graduate work, such as complex reasoning
  • Greater emphasis on higher cognitive skills and less dependence on vocabulary knowledge alone
More text-based materials, such as reading passages
A broader selection of reading passages
Expansion of computer-enabled tasks (e.g., highlighting a sentence in a passage that serves the function described in the question)
        Two 40-minute sections

The New Quantitative Reasoning Section

    * Measure of ability to reason quantitatively and solve problems in a quantitative setting,
    * Measure of basic mathematical skills and understanding of elementary mathematical concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, probability, and statistics
    * Quantitative reasoning skills that are closer to skills generally used in graduate school
o Proportion of questions involving real-life scenarios and data interpretation increased
o Proportion of Geometry questions decreased
          o On-screen four-function calculator with square root
    * Inclusion of question types other than multiple-choice, including computer-enabled tasks such as entering a numerical answer via a keyboard
    * Two 40-minute sections

New Verbal and Quantitative Score Scales

  • The GRE Board has approved new score scales for the Verbal and Quantitative sections. The GRE Program anticipates that the mean of the new score scale will be 150 and the expected score range will be 130 to 170, in 1-point increments. Final specification of the score scale will be determined based on data from the initial revised General Test administrations in the fall of 2007.
  • A concordance table will be available on the GRE Web site to assist score users in determining the relationship between old and new Verbal and Quantitative scores.
  • For Verbal and Quantitative scores earned prior to September 2007, approximate score equivalents on the new scale will be included on score reports to assist score users in comparing old and new scores.
  • The score scale for the Analytical Writing section will continue to be 0 to 6, in half-point increments.
Changes in Test Delivery

    * The GRE General Test will be administered on computer on approximately 30 test dates worldwide.
    * An expanded Internet-based testing network with about 3,500 test sites will be available worldwide.

If you have already started your preparation for GRE by going through word lists and improving your vocabulary, it will be a wise decision to take your GRE test in the existing pattern itself. So, brace yourself to complete the GRE before Sep 2007. Else, you may have to unlearn some of what you have already learnt and learn new things.

Best Wishes

hi,  actually verbal section is a bit difficult.... But u dont have to cramm the wordlist as every testtaker thinks. .. there r some basic words that u have to know.. Refer "BARRONS FOR GRE" that has high frequency wordlist and good stratergies
just be focus and dont panic... 4 months is still a lot of time..just follow the systematic plan

All the best and give ur best shot

Hi

As ETS is shifting to the new format, they have stopped registrations for
taking the GRE in old format in certain countries. India is one of the
locations where registrations to take the old format GRE has closed.

Here is the excerpt of message that you will get in the GRE website if you
try to register for the GRE Test

"Due to extremely high registration volumes in India during the period
from January 1, 2007 to July 31, 2007, test registration for the current
GRE General Test is now closed. We apologize for any disruption caused by
this action.

Test takers unable to register for the current GRE General Test will need
to register for the revised GRE General Test, which will be introduced in
September 2007. Registration for the revised General Test will begin in
July 2007. "

However, you can register for the test should you choose to travel to
some of these countries. Here is a list of some destinations that are close to
India.

1. Singapore
2. Nepal
3. Malaysia
4. Hong Kong

Best wishes

Subject: GRE New Pattern scrapped
prepedge
Send Email Send Email

Hi

ETS has announced that the new pattern of administering GRE Test that was scheduled to commence from September 2007 has been scrapped after a discussion with the GRE Board. The old pattern will continue.

Registrations will reopen in countries like India where they had been closed for a while.

Here is the gist of what ETS website says

"ETS has cancelled plans to launch the revised Graduate Record Examinations® (GRE®) General Test. The decision was made in consultation with the Executive Committee of the GRE Board.

While ETS and the Board remain committed to improving the test, on balance, GRE officials said they believe problems guaranteeing complete access to the new Internet-based test outweighed the benefits of immediately moving to the new format.

ETS originally planned to launch the revised GRE General Test worldwide in September. Instead, the company will continue to offer the test worldwide in its current computer-based, continuous testing format. Registrations in India, China and Japan, which had been closed, will be reopened in the near future to accommodate application deadlines. Likewise, registrations for the current GRE General Test will continue elsewhere."

You can read the full text of the press release at

Hi Manish

Most Business schools will require you to take the GMAT test and not the GRE test. Though, there might be a very few exceptions who will accept both GRE and GMAT Scores.

If your primary objective is doing an MBA, then you should focus on GMAT. Details of GMAT are given at http://www.4gmat.com and http://www.mba.com

Hey guys..

does anybody have any idea if, on the day of the GRE, we have to carry
some sort of special 'admission ticket'(which ETS will mail us), or is
just a print out of the confirmation email with the confirmation
number enough (in addition to passport etc. of course..)?

had this doubt because on the main ETS site, under registration,
they've said that an 'admission ticket will be mailed to you 3 weeks
after registering'....

any idea?

Hey Manish,

Regarding your query on the general / subject GRE, I have no idea, but I can suggest some good books for general GRE preparation.
For my preparation, I bought 2 books : the Princeton Review and the Barron's GRE book.  Each of them came along with a CD / DVD which brief you about the GRE (pattern, cracking techniques etc.)....

Both these books are pretty good and recommended.

Good luck...

I think its best if you consult the testing center to
see what they prefer. When I took my GRE, my testing
center already had my information on file. I brought
along the printout from the website just in case
though. One thing you really, really, really want to
do is make sure you have an ID with a photo and
signature (must match the name you registered with).
My testing center was strict on this...they even
turned two individuals away.

Hey Regina,

Thanks for the information.

I called Prometric (the GRE head office in India) and they told me the same thing.
So, I will be carrying the printout of my confirmation email along with my passport.  I think that should be enough.

thanks again

You're very welcome and good luck. It's not too bad
of a test.
