Hi everyone,

Tonight, thursday, is gonna be my last night in your great town, and I return in
Montreal tomorrow.

I'm gonna be at the Reservoir Lounge tonight for some more swing outs. If ever
some people want to give me a "leaving jam" I would love it.

Thanks to the people I danced with, I had a great time with all of you guys and
my "english learning journey" would have been so boring without the swing dance.
Special thanks to the people who had the patience to speak with me, 'cause "I
didn't understand that" and "could you repeat it slower please?" were my
favorite phrases these last two months!

Hope to see you at the Rez,

Dominic

I'd like to thank everyone who helped to make the New Year's Eve Dance such
a joy.

Cheryl Henry for organizing the yummy and varied food buffet and the
delightful decor from the helium balloons to the tables and chairs.
Alex Pangman, Peter Hill on piano, Kevin on trumpet and the bassist for such
great music.
Alana Hock, Arthur Lulu, Mike Thibault, Ryan, Peter Renzland, Peter Komady,
for great DJing.
Alex Pangman, Alana Hock, Peter Komady, Peter Renzland, Jody Glazner, Oded,
Jazz FM, and others for spreading the word far and wide.
Arthur Lulu, Joanna, Lisa B, Robyn, John, Leon W for a great and fun and
unique dance performance and fashion show.
Joanna for the nifty nitwear clothing designs in the show.
Jody Glazner, Janice, Peter R, Laura D and others for helping with the
excellent and endless food buffet on the night.
Cheryl, Eric, Peter K, Mike T, Oded and others for helping with the set up.
Jody G, Oded, Gary and others for helping to distribute some of the
refreshments.
Laura Dauphine, Janice and Errin and others for doing the door.
The nice guy in charge of the first floor hall for allowing us all to go
down and use his bar, and he and his coat check person for letting us check
our coats at the first floor coat room.
All the people who came from near and far with a spirit of cheer that kept
the energy high and good until past 6am in the morning - our out of town
visitors came from Rochester, Ottawa, Montreal, Ann Arbor, London, Waterloo,
Cleveland and elsewhere.
Norman and everyone else who provided billeting for our out of town guests.
Leon Wu for organizing billeting.
Everyone who just added a helping hand in all kinds of ways from filling
water jugs to handing out party favours.

We are so lucky in Toronto to have a Lindy Hop community where people
generously support each other and where so many of us gererously pitch in to
make everything work and go well. Without that events like the New Year's
Eve Dance we just had could not be half as good as they are, and maybe could
not even happen at all.

Very best regards,

Simon

Hello Michael,

Just wanted to wish you (and all the dancers)(I really miss you guys) a
great 2003 and Happy New Year. Hope you all have a great year. I am not
hooked up to the lindy dancers chat line as of yet and was hoping you could
let the dancers know that I will be at RD's this Saturday. I am trying to
convince them to hire my new swing band (5 Guys and Moe) for a regular swing
night at RD's and know I would have more luck convincing them, if you guys
came down and danced. Keep in mind that this Saturday is my blues band, but
if you guys came down, I would swing as much as we could. 5 Guys and Moe,
is going to be most of the guys from the Monday night band at the Res. I
haven't found a gig for us yet but am still trying.

Hope you can come out Saturday and if not, hope to see you somewhere soon.
Best regards,

your pal,

Maureen Brown

Hi Hoppers,
Let not sleet or snow or ice keep us from our swingin' thang.
Let me wish you all a happy new year.
No birthdays yet reported.
This Sunday will be the last time for a while for Mr. Chris Gale who will be on
the road with Blue Rodeo.
The rest of the band will be Tyler, Wm. Sperandei, Al Cross and yours truly on
the bass. We are also
expecting a visit from the mellifluous Tory Cassis.
I am sorry to have had to raise the cover but it was our only move.
Bees Knees teach the free class at 7pm followed by the band.
See you all there,

It's only two weeks away! Come to Rochester for another great weekend of
workshops & dancing!
FLYER: http://www.ggw.org/~rsdn/RSDNworkshop2.html

JOEL & ALISON PLYS, formerly of Cleveland - now from San Diego - are known for
their lively & expert dance instruction! Their charisma, energy, and clear &
entertaining teaching style make for a fun, positive dance experience! We were
so impressed by Joel's dancing & teaching at Swingout New Hampshire this summer
- we knew we had to bring Joel & Alison's ENERGY - and the BALBOA - to Rochester
for the first time in our region.

BALBOA - a swing-era dance that originated in Southern California - is enjoying
a huge resurgence among Swing dancers. Done in closed position with easy smooth
footwork, Bal connects you with your partner and captures the lilt of the music,
whatever its speed. You can do it relaxed and just groove, or throw in all kinds
of variations & syncopations. Best of all it works great for really quick
tempos, allowing dancers at any level to calmly dance to blazingly fast music
with ease! Plus, during a dance, you can go back & forth between your regular
swing dancing & your Bal. It's truly a fun & rewarding dance - Join us this
weekend with Joel & Alison and learn Bal!

WORKSHOPS at Visual Studies Workshop, 31 Prince St (at University Ave)

Saturday Jan 18: Balboa Basics, Bal Basics Plus, Bal-Swing Variations,
Crossover Variations

Sunday Jan 19: Swing Dips 'n Tricks, Bal-Swing Throw-out Variations, Bal
Students' Choice!

EVENING EVENTS!

SATURDAY - "BLUES IN THE NIGHT!" Workshop 8:15-9:30 pm, DJ Dancing til 11:30
pm. Learn to dance to that slow, groovy blues music, Joel & Alison style!
We'll learn some cool moves and then enjoy dancing to DJ'd blues 'n swing for
the rest of the evening. at Visual Studies Workshop, 31 Prince St (at
University)

Swing Dance and Classes!
Lindy Hop & Blues Workshops with Toronto Instructor, Alana Hock

Lindy Hop, the grand daddy of all Swing dances, originated in the
Savoy Ballroom of Harlem in the 1920s and is back in Buffalo! Learn
how to dance to all tempos of music, including fast with exuberant
Charleston kicks, and slow and groovy to the Blues. Stay for the
evening dance to practice your new moves on the Dry Gulch's large
dance floor.

Saturday, January 25, 2003

12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.
Eat your veggies...Dance your basics!
Learn or review the important basics of Lindy Hop. If you know the
basics, it's a chance to re-visit and fine tune them. Requirements:
Be a sponge. No partner necessary for any of the workshops.

2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.
Where'd you get those fancy moves?
Add spice to your basics. Learn some variations. There will also
be some Charleston content. Requirements: Lots of energy.

3:30 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.
Blues dancing 101!
The music has all of a sudden gotten slower and doing a Swing Out
feels weird. What next? A chance to get a bit cozy and learn the
basics of Blues.

7:30 p.m.—11:00 p.m.
Swing Dance
DJ Jackie Jaros

All classes and dance at:
The Dry Gulch

Depew, NY 14043

That smile ... that style ... that sparkle & sincerity... So just
what is it that makes Alana Hock, one of Canada's best Lindy Hop
instructors? To begin, training with Sweden's worldwide-envied
performance troupe, The Rhythm Hot Shots, also Steven Mitchell &
Virginie, Paul Overton & Sharon Ashe, Bill Borgida and David Dalmo.
In addition, Alana recently taught in Syracuse with Frankie
Manning, the 88-year-young granddaddy of swing dance. Alana has over
four years of teaching experience and taught workshops in Ottawa,
Guelph, Kingston, Montreal and Vancouver and grown into one of
Toronto's most popular instructors. Alana's also taken it to the
stage with the Juno-wielding Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra, at
Toronto's Beaches Jazz Fest , the Kick Up Your Heels dance festival
and the CNE. Dance with Alana and she'll work you hard and drill
your basics while being there to encourage and support you. When
you're "on," she's the first to jump up in applause; when you make
mistakes, she's there to help you laugh, learn from them and hand you
a nice bowl of chicken soup (well, maybe not the last part, but the
warmth is definitely there). With Alana, you'll learn not just to
dance from your frame, but from your heart.

To register, send in your Name, Address, Phone Number, Email
Address. Specify if you are a Lead or a follow and which workshops
you would like to register for.

Cost is $15 for any one workshop, $24 for any two workshops or $30
for all three workshops. Admission to the dance is $7.00 (Please pay
at door for the dance).

Hiya folks,

I just wanted to tell everyone I am performing at the Gate 403 this Thurs Jan
9th. I'll be singing songs and the like accompanied by Roland Hunter on guitar.
The Gate 403 doesn't have much of a dance floor, let alone a good one; for that
matter I should also inform that there is no drummer on this gig. At any rate,
the aisles of this restaurant are generous, and you can count on me to play more
than a couple of swing tunes. If you've ever been curious as to what I do in my
spare time, well, this is it.

The Gate 403 (416 588 2930) is located at 403 Roncesvales Av, just south of
Dundas W Av, as well as just south of Dundas West TTC subway. It is directly
across the street from the Revue repertory cinema. We play from 8pm til
midnight. Oh yah--it's free (no cover, that is). See you there.
