Subject: Upcoming Courses in Somerset this year

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick shameless plug for some courses taking place at Brook End in Somerset this year:

This Summer two long-term Mentors of Gaia University International and now directors of Gaia Action Learning Academy Germany, Katharina Weber and Valerie Seitz will be travelling to the UK to run two unique courses including a weekend intensive on Life Designing & Integrative EcoSocial Management. The aim of all Gaia University courses is to make our work as designers, project organisers and simply as human beings more efficient and effective.

Life Designing,  Fri 8th – Sun 10th June 2012, £200 with concessionary places available

A weekend course to give time to the most important question of all – how shall I live my life?   The Life Designing workshop is an opportunity to gain the skills, knowledge and tools to implement your visions and goals. You will be supported to honour your life and learning to date and use effective design tools to consciously reflect on your experiences. By creating a space to observe where we have come from we can consciously create where we would like to go: to effectively design your life for abundance, learning and creativity.  For more info: http://www.wildheartpermaculture.co.uk/?page_id=1481

Integrative Project Management, Wed 13th - Saturday 16th June, £500 with concessionary places available

On this course we will be transferring the eco-social Permaculture way of thinking into project management. We will look at how our organisational processes and our actual project results can be designed to manifest our Permaculture Ethics. We will explore how we can ‘obtain a yield’ to make ourselves, our projects & our organisations more effective through design. This course is particularly relevant to people involved in the Transition Movement, campaigns & projects as well as for permaculture designers & green businesses. For more info: http://www.wildheartpermaculture.co.uk/?page_id=1494

I can't recommend these ladies enough, my design work & focus has developed tenfold since working with them. And its a good excuse to see my site - beautiful 4 acre smallholding outside Glastonbury. Plus home-grown food :)

Many thanks,

Nicole

The Protect the Wilderness campaign attended a court hearing on Monday 5th brought by Gloucestershire County Council. This morning, the Judge gave possession to the council. An eviction is very likely in the immediate days.

However Protect the Wilderness would like to confirm that the Reclaim the Fields Gathering happening this week will still be going ahead with a whole three days of workshops, activities and actions as previously advertised.

For anyone attending:

  • You will be fed, warm, comfortable & inspired!
  • You will be able to camp safely in the forest, please bring a tent & bedding if possible otherwise there is a large communal yurt provided with bedding & blankets available
  • There will be enough food for everyone
  • There will be a fire-pit & warm spaces to be

And finally, you will be free to choose your involvement with the eviction & any solidarity needed with the Wilderness Centre. There are safe spaces as well as opportunities to become involved in defending the space - it is completely your choice! This is a great chance to learn about your rights and see the results of our work here at the wilderness centre.

So please join Protect the Wilderness & Reclaim the Fields in celebrating our shared struggles for accessing land to grow food for our communities & to live land-based lives.

As a reminder, here is a taster of what will be happening the next few days:

  • Introductions to land rights, Reclaim the Fields UK & European constellations, Seed Sovereignty, WWOLF (woofing with teeth) and Reclaim the Field Trips
  • Workshops including composting gender, occupying land, protecting bee populations, food sovereignty and more.
  • Skillshares, guerrilla gardening, music & feasting!

For more information about the gathering please see:
http://www.reclaimthefields.org.uk/spring-gathering-2012/

Who to contact if needed: 07811 726 372

Directions: Bus/train to Gloucester then get the 24/24a to Mitcheldean (takes about 30 mins) get off when you see the church (near the hairdressers) and ask someone for directions or notice other RTFers. Otherwise call the number above & you will be collected.

Reclaim the Fields are delighted to invite you to volunteer at Chagfood and Steward Wood from 7-16 May.

A four-year-old Welsh cob cross Dartmoor pony is revolutionising farming. Samson is the heart of a project that keeps time-tested skills alive and proves that resilient low impact farming in the UK can be profitable. This is a taste of the the future of British farms amid peak oil: Chagfood. Chagfood has been featured on Radio 4 as a "radical farming model for the UK's future".

Steward Wood, four miles away, is a pioneering permaculture project which fought the planning system and won permission for their community to integrate conservation woodland management techniques with organic growing, traditional skills and crafts and low-impact sustainable living.

Event in Frome tonight! >>
====
Dear Alex

The next meeting will be at Wesley Church Hall on Thursday 3rd May at 7.00pm for
a shared meal and 8pm for the main meeting.

POWER FROM WATER

Anthony Battersby from Tellisford Mill is the visiting speaker for the next
meeting on 3rd May. He and his wife Rachel Feilden converted the old water-mill
at Tellisford into a small hydro electricity plant and began generating in 2007;
they now help other people do the same.
Anthony has a good overview of energy issues in the UK and the
advantages/disadvantages of different sorts of power generation. He will explain
how Frome and the surrounding area could be more resilient by developing more
hydro electricity plants on local rivers, and will describe some of the problems
they have encountered. Anthony is an experienced speaker regularly attending
meetings, ranging from the Women's Institute to retired Engineers. He is
chairman of Mendip Power Group and a director of River Energy Networks.

After the presentation there will be an update on the lottery bidding process.
Peter will give an overview and then the different groups can tell us the main
aims of their project ideas, and how they are getting on.

Agenda is roughly:
7pm - Food to share. Please put a little label on the food to say if its veggie
or vegan (or neither!)
8pm - Announcements
8.15pm- Anthony's talk on Hydro power
8.45pm - Questions
9pm - Lottery update and group feedback

Please bring a friend or invite anyone you think may be interested.

And a quick update on the request for new Directors for the Sustainable Frome
CIC - we have 3 tentative nominations - could these people confirm to Katy D by
email by 10th May at the latest plus ANY MORE NOMINATIONS from anyone else
please.

The Newsletter is posted on the SF notice board in the Garden Café and on the SF
stall at the Farmers Market every second Saturday of the month. Please share
this with your friends - signing up to SF newsletters is EASY on the front page
of our website.

*A presentation by the brilliant Mary Clear of Incredible Edible Todmorden who have planted veg all over their Yorkshire town from fire stations to hospitals. Watch a video of her on the BBC News here: http://youtu.be/daeflWMjABA

*Farm tours & practical workshops on Pollytunnel Growing at the Torganics Market Garden as well as how to care for your soil workshop.

*Access to Land 101 - get over an hour with our access to land experts in whatever area interests you most - starting allotments with Allan Cavill from the National Society of Allotment & Leisure Gardeners, accessing land from public landowners with Mary Clear, community supported agriculture schemes, community gardens and more with the Community Land Advisory Service. There is no such thing as a silly question!

*Skilling Up Somerset - interested in land and food related training? Fancy being part of a future training coop or growing mentor scheme in Somerset? Now is your chance to give your feedback, talk to others working in education and more looking at how we can re-learn the skills we need to grow food locally.

*Growing change - are you involved in community work in Somerset? Want to know the facts about food poverty locally and what we can do about it? Interested in therapeutic horticulture? Want to share best practice & ideas of how to overcome the challenges we're facing?

*How can we build a local food movement in Somerset - where next for the growing local food network? What can we do in our communities? What needs to happen now? Listen to ideas from across Somerset & beyond, including from successful groups in London & Bristol and have a chance to be part of the discussion.

Hello,

We have been slowly confirming sites within our network already but are posting out to see if there are other edible spaces that would like to be open to the public as part of the Incredible Edible Somerset Open Gardens?

Running on Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th August 2012 as part of National Allotments Week, the weekend is a chance to show off Somerset's edible spaces from Orchards to Allotments and raise awareness of the benefits of growing your own food.

What we are asking are for local projects to is to offer to open to the public during a time slot of your convenience over the weekend. Similar schemes across the UK have been very successful and it would be a wonderful opportunity to promote the community food network in Somerset.

We also have a small amount of funding available if you would like to be paid to run or host a workshop on your site. Sites will be advertised in our leaflet which will go out to the public at the beginning of July.  We are therefore asking for sites to register as soon as possible if they are interested.

Therefore if you have a community garden, allotment, smallholding or even edible balcony garden please use the form to register your interest here:

http://www.somersetcommunityfood.org.uk/index.php?page=incredible-edible-somerset-open-gardens

Many thanks,

Nicole

For anyone with an interest in outdoor sculpture, art & its relationship to food you will be in for a treat at the Incredible Edible Somerset Summer Conference! Taking place on Saturday 14th July in Paddington Farm the conference is also the only South West host for the 'Race into Time' art exhibition.

Supported by the Campaign for Real Farming, the intent of the exhibition is to raise awareness that we can grow our food healthily & that there are alternatives to the corporate food giants sponsoring the Olympic Games. Part of the thought-provoking tour is an intimate look at some of the allotmenteers who were evicted to make way for the games. It is not anti-olympics it simply raises questions about our relationships to food & land.

For further information about the exhibition visit http://www.olympicsart.com  otherwise feast your eyes on the outdoor sculptures & beautiful paintings at Paddington Farm on the 14th July.

For anyone who has booked a place at the Incredible Edible Somerset Summer Conference, taking place this Saturday 14th July:

We will now be starting the day at a different location in Glastonbury.
We have called a number of you today & hope this message has been received for those we do not have numbers for.

We have been working with the farm managers at Paddington Farm for the past fortnight keeping an eye on conditions following our recent challenging weather. As there has been no improvement & with torrential rain due for Friday & Saturday this has meant the marquee & other spaces we were intending on using are no longer the most practical or safe & we would like to put the comfort of attendees on the day first.

Therefore we will now be starting the day at St Dunstan's School  in Glastonbury, which will host our inspiring main speakers, skill-shares, discussions and lunch. Following lunch those wishing can join us at Paddington Farm to participate in our practical pollytunnel & soil care workshops as well as the farm tour.

We have had to re-design the timetable (please see below) to accommodate these changes, however no elements have been dropped. We hope with this new timetable more people will be able to enjoy the practical workshops (now repeated) & will be more able to participate in the interesting skill-shares in the morning.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause to individuals who were only able to attend for part of the day. We have noted your original workshop choices & have attempted to allocate places at each workshop as well as we can. Please note participation is by no means compulsory and you are of course welcome to mingle at the School, exploring the art on display & networking with other local people passionate about local food.

New location: St Dunstan's School, Wells Road, Glastonbury, BA6 9BY. The location is very close to the high street & nearest bus stop is on the Wells Road, a few steps away. There is also adequate parking at the School but of course we would encourage anyone to use public transport where possible.
For a map please see here: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=BA6+9BY&hl=en&hnear=Glastonbury+BA6+9BY,+United+Kingdom&gl=uk&t=m&z=16

Glastonbury get your Greenfingers ready!

The program has been published for this years Harvest Show in Glastonbury. Inside are details of all the classes in which you can enter your home grown vegetables, fruits and flowers, as well as home-made bread, cakes and preserves.

The Harvest Show is now in its sixth year at the Town Hall in Glastonbury. The day is a fantastic community event, bringing together young and old to celebrate nourishing, sustainable, local food. The Show will be taking place at the Town Hall on Saturday 15th September. Public entry is from 12.30pm, with competition entries received from 8:45am.

Children are invited to let their imaginations run wild and enter the coolest fruit and vegetable creature they can create. There will be the traditional councillors challenge as well as a 'Cafe Cook-Off' for local cafes in Glastonbury to submit their local and seasonal signature dish. All show entries will be measured on their edible uses, not supermarket perfection.
